In real life (on Earth), you can find life in a wide variety of environments: the mountains, the desert, the jungle, the ocean, and so forth. In fiction, this is not the case. Often times, when characters travel to different planets, you'll frequently only see them in one environment. The entire planet is desert or jungle or mountains with exactly one ecosystem. Behind the scenes, this is often done for cost-saving measures. Even if it's a city on another planet, you'll only hear about the one that the main characters are landing on, despite the fact that any race that is out attempting to conquer the stars would realistically have more than one important city. [[FridgeLogic In short, the entire planet is homogeneous, even when, in theory, it should not be case.]] Not to mention, the environment will always be suitable enough that the characters don't ever need space suits.

Examples:
* Take your pick from either Series/PowerRangersInSpace or Series/PowerRangersLostGalaxy
* Star Wars
** Film/ANewHope has a couple, Tattooine is entirely a desert planet, and Yavin-4's moon seems to be nothing but jungle.
** Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack : Hoth appears to compose entirely of snow, and Dagobah is a full jungle planet.
** Film/ReturnOfTheJedi acknowledges this trope with "the forest moon of Endor".
* Shuggazoom from WesternAnimation/SuperRobotMonkeyTeamHyperforceGo qualifies. It has a single city on its North Pole, and it's surrounded by dangerous jungle.
Aversions:
* While Doctor Who does hold a few examples and aversions, its main aversion comes in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS1E5TheKeysOfMarinus The Keys of Marinus]]. (It actually inspired the page's creation.) It takes the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan into many different environments. Marinus is shown to be quite diverse for an alien planet. It boasts SEVERAL cities (even having different legal systems to boot), jungles, icy wastelands, acid oceans, glass beaches, and more. It's fully developed alien planet. Keep in mind this was back in ''1964''
* Earth, itself.
