* The Gerudo in ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' are a CultureChopSuey of Roma and Arabs (with some Latin and German spliced in). They're primarily Arabic inspired in archicture and culture, but they're individual appearances have more Romani inspirations. Primarily, they're introduced in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' as a tribe of thieves living nearby to the European-esque country of Hyrule. Decades later in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwordsAdventures'' they're no longer thieves and centuries later by ''Videogame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'' they have more of their Roma elements, become a little closer to the other friendly settlements...though they're less welcoming than they were in "Four Swords Adventures".

*** In
the FantasyCounterpartCulture setting's debut form, the module ''I6: Castle Ravenloft'', the proto-Vistani are simply called "gypsies", and are characterized as a clan of wagon-using human nomads who have been forcibly bound into the service of the Romani, vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. They hate Strahd, but they fear him too much to actively resist him, and so they serve him for unknown reasons. As a result, "gypsies" are one of the potentially hostile foes that players may have to fight as they explore the castle and its surroundings. There is also a mandatory sequence where the players visit the "gypsy camp" and get their fortune told by the "gypsy seer", Madame Eva, which is used to determine the randomly generated aspects of the adventure.
*** When the ''setting'' version of Ravenloft debuted in 2nd edition, the Vistani were given their now-iconic name and expanded upon as a mysterious race of mist-traveling, caravan-dwelling nomads who clearly know far more about the mysterious Demiplane of Dread than they share with others. They are described as having an in-universe
reputation as being not only thieves, kidnappers and willing agents of evil.evil, but also [[MysticRomani powerful wielders of dark sorcery]]. The reality is that, whilst there certainly are Vistani who live down to their negative reputation, they are mostly just isolationists who want nothing to do with other races, though they ''do'' have genuine magical powers, in the form of their signature Evil Eye, [[DimensionalTraveler being able to leave the Demiplane at will]], and [[YourMagicsNoGoodHere being able to use Divination without impediment]]. They even got their own {{sourcebook}}, ''Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani'', which fully fleshed out their FantasyCounterpartCulture, whilst a playable [[HumanSubspecies offshoot]] in the form of the Half-Vistani appeared in the final 2nd edition iteration of the setting.
*** It's noted that amongst the Vistani tribes, the Corvara live down to the Vistani's evil reputation the most; having no unique stand-out skills and being inferior to all of the other tribes in terms of their specialties, they have largely chosen to embrace theft, grift and peddling vices -- animal fighting matches, freakshows, and the sale of alcohol, drugs, and black market goods -- to provide their families with financial support.
*** The most iconic of the outright evil Vistani are the Radanavich clan, who were willing to kidnap a human boy to become the [[MindlinkMates "bride"]] of a vampire in exchange for payment. This led to their inadvertently inspiring Dr. Rudolph van Richten to take up the cause of the monster hunter when they stole his son Erasmus for this -- [[KarmicDeath and also led to their deaths at the doctor's hands]].
*** 3rd edition saw two different versions of the Vistani. The Creator/WizardsOfTheCoast-produced "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft", a reinvention of the original I6 module, brought the Vistani back to their original incarnation as bandits in service to Count Strahd, but dropped as much of the "gypsy" motif as it could, reimagining them as a newly-formed bandit clan made up of humans and [[{{hobbits}} halflings]] in league with a cursed seer. The 3rd edition continuation of the Ravenloft setting, done by [[Creator/WhiteWolf Sword & Sorcery Studios]], continued with the Vistani lore presented in "Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani".
*** 4th edition saw another reimagining of the Vistani, this time as a planes-traveling nomadic society rather than a singular ethnicity, and with no specific ties to Ravenloft. These Vistani were characterized as fully heroic individuals, and even playable without needing to take the now-forgotten Half-Vistani race. The most overtly "Gypsy" element to their lore was their retained focus on the Evil Eye, with the Vistani feats providing various ways of broadcasting magic through the user's eyes.
*** 5th edition first saw the Vistani return in the module "Curse of Count Strahd", an UpdatedReRelease of I6: Castle Ravenloft. Here, they were presented as a kind of blend of their 1st edition and 2nd edition elements, being largely retreads of their 1e incarnations, but maintaining the Vistani name and evil eye powers of their 2e selves. A social media backlash denouncing these Vistani as racist stereotypes saw first a sensitivity-based re-make of the module, and then led to a heavy redevelopment of the Vistani in the 5e campaign book for ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'': ''Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft''. This incarnation goes out of its way to present the negative stereotypes of the Vistani as unjustified and baseless, even reimagining the Radanaviches as human traffickers who pretended to be Vistani to use their fearsome reputation as cover. It also incorporates the idea of the Vistani being a multi-racial society linked by common customs rather than a singular racial ethnicity from 4th edition.
** The last ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'' [[UpdatedReRelease iteration]] of 2nd edition, "Domains of Dread", included a new Rogue-type class called the Gypsy, only accessible to humans, half-elves, and half-Vistani. Although considered a Rogue class[[note]]in 2e, the modern "Rogue" class was called the "Thief", and "Rogue" was a broad category of classes that included the Thief, the Bard, and the Gypsy[[/note]] the gypsy actually had no innate affinity for roguish skills unless the player was a multiclassed Gypsy/Thief. Instead, it was more of a [[SquishyWizard squishy]] [[MagicKnight gish]], having limited access to armor even for a Rogue, but gaining access to a small pool of 1st to 4th level Divination spells (and to all magic items that use Divination magic) and being master knife-fighters
** ''TabletopGame/{{Greyhawk}}'': The Rhennee are a nomadic human ethnicity implied to be ''actual'' Romani who were somehow stranded on Oerth and decided to just make the best of it. The biggest difference is that the Rhennee are a river-dwelling people who sail the lakes and streams of the Flanaess... though there ''are'' a Rhennee offshoot called the Attloi who still use the traditional caravans. [[FantasticRacism The two people look down on each other]], the Rhennee dismissing the Attloi for not joining them on the water and the Attloi dismissing the Rhennee for not truly preserving their ancestral ways. Rhennee are highly distrusted throughout the Flanaess and have a reputation as thieves, swindlers, liars and con-artists, leading to an abundance of negative stereotypes and active anti-Rhennee prejudice -- Rhennee riverboats are often confronted with petty cruelties such as being ordered to pay extra taxes, prohibited from using the trading areas, or being punished for lacking local fishing permits. Anti-Rhennee sentiment is especially prominent in the Duchy of Urnst. Of course... all the hostility ''might'' be [[NotHelpingYourCase largely because]] Rhennee social traditions dictate that [[MoralMyopia lying, cheating, stealing from and deceiving others is no crime if done to non-Rhennee]].



** The AD&D 2nd Edition supplement ''The Complete Bard's Handbook'' has the Gypsy-Bard kit, which can be used with bard characters. Gypsies are members of a clan, are considered to be thieves by non-Gypsies (because they will steal anything that's not on someone else's person), travel using horse-drawn carts and wagons, entertain non-Gypsies with song and dance, have a gift for dealing with animals, can be {{Fortune Teller}}s and sometimes call themselves a king or queen.
