* BaseBreaker: LOLBAT is in the lead although a lot of Kurtz twists and addons have the same element. Skull's diminuitive, ambitious cousin, and Scratch Fury and many others all have their detractors.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Scott's Dad is probably the darkest horse to become as popular as he has with the fanbase, but Scott does try not to overuse him.

* MemeticMutation - '''[[http://www.pvponline.com/my-parents-are-dead Batman's parents are DEEEEEAAAAD!]]'''

* TheScrappy - Skull's cousin Schecky.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot - Several of Kurtz' recent (well, last-couple-of-years kind of recent) plots build up an impressive and possibly even grandiose story arc, only to fizzle out on a short anticlimax. Take for example Robbie's brewing company, Brent's deal with the devil, or the developer that tried to bribe them into giving a good review of his game, all plots which could have been fantastic if not for the fact that Kurtz apparently chickened out right when he got to the hook.

*** Also, the old WoW guilds (Panda Attack for PVP, I forget for Penny Arcade) were pretty much an online, massively-multiplayer extension of the real-life relationship between the two. [[CtrlAltDel B^Uckley]] tried to get in on it with his own guild, but when Kurtz, Krahulik, and Holkins would have none of it, he ended things on a predictable note (ie massive hostility for all).

* YouShouldKnowThisAlready: Kurtz ''loves'' to do parody strips that spoil parts of adaptations. After all, it's not like anyone could want to see {{Watchmen}} without having read the comic book first anyway, right?
** The comic is over 20 years old. Is that too long to wait to do a parody?
*** He was doing the arc ''because'' of the movie that was about to come out, one whose ''potential viewers'' might not have read the comic book, and therefore ''might not know the ending''. This seems to be a concept not only Kurtz, but [[ItWasHisSled many of the comic book's fans seemed to have a problem with around the time the movie came out]]. Basically it's assumed that if you have any interest in the franchise at all, [[FanMyopia you]] ''[[FanMyopia had]]'' [[FanMyopia to have read the comic book already]].

* CerebusSyndrome - The strip toys with this to some extent. It never goes full-over into drama, but for most of its run now it's alternated between GagPerDay format, {{dramedy}}, and [[RuleOfDrama downright serious drama]]. Some people felt the strip fell full into CerebusSyndrome during the Brent/Jade wedding arc, which happened to overlap with a surprisingly serious turn for Skull, Cole's marriage falling apart, and a story about Robbie and Jase falling out. YourMileageMayVary, of course, as CerebusSyndrome [[TropesAreNotBad is not universally bad]] and the strip quickly went back to comedic arcs after a few months, just as it always had done before.

* GirlOnGirlIsHot - Brent initially thinks Miranda is there to fulfil fulfill his fantasy of watching Jade get it on with another girl.girl.
* HollywoodNerd: To a certain extent, Brent is this. He pretends he's not a nerd, but his interests are very nerd-oriented. Furthermore, as in this trope, he's good-looking and socially adept (in other words, "normal"). The twist is that Brent is the ''only'' HollywoodNerd in the main cast (except maybe Max Powers and Jade), since Francis and Cole are closer to popular perceptions of nerdom.

Added DiffLines:

** Brent, actually is an aversion, and while he admits to "interests that coincide with nerdity" he denies being an actual nerd, which Francis (a straight example of this trope) calls him out on it.
*** To be more specific, he's an avowed Apple geek who will buy ''any'' product they make, a D&D player, a gamer, he plays ''WorldOfWarcraft'' with his wife (who's in many ways geekier than him), quotes movies constantly, has declared JossWhedon his master, almost dropped out of college because he was hooked on Sega games, and consistently gets into arguments about genre fiction or gaming with Francis and Cole. [[BlatantLies But he's not a nerd. Definitely not a nerd.]]

** Kurtz himself is a polarizing figure within the webcomics community -- though one of the most successful out there, he seems to have few friends in the community outside his {{Nakama}} (which includes Kris Straub, Gabe, Tycho, and Frank Cho).
*** This is because he has something of a SmallNameBigEgo reputation; he's aware of it, and occasionally pokes fun of it, but evidently hasn't realized that he got this reputation as a result of actual things he was doing.

** Prior to his Great American Journey sanding off the obnoxious edges of his personality, he was routinely treated as one even though he didn't really deserve it.
