[[caption-width-right:330:[[{{Playstation3}} Is]] [[{{Wii}} your]] [[{{Xbox360}} console]] as [[MoeAnthropomorphism moe]] as this?]]

ConsoleWars [[RecycledINSPACE AS A VIDEOGAME!]]

The game starts off with a battle between the three goddesses ({{XBox360}}, {{PlayStation3}}, and {{Wii}}) versus the fourth goddess -- Sega Neptune, the personification of the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Neptune#Sega_Neptune Sega Neptune that never came to be]]. Since this is a 3-on-1 battle, it naturally goes into a CurbStompBattle (coupled with a HopelessBossFight, as the player is playing as Neptune). Neptune then gets [[LaserGuidedAmnesia amnesia]] and gets turned into a preteen loli. One of the greater goddesses then sends her out on a mission to stop the monsters running around rampant ([[DigitalPiracyIsEvil read as stopping piracy]]) in the gaming world. To do that, she needs to find a book that holds the secrets of the world... and hopefully win the three other goddesses to her side for good.

Along the way, she gets to meet up with other various people who are [[MoeAnthropomorphism the moe personification of]] Gust, NipponIchi, Idea Factory, and Compile Heart. 5pb and Red Entertainment are also available as DLC characters.

Developed by Compile Heart and published by {{Sega}}, this game was released on August 19, 2010 in Japan, and in North America on February 15, 2011. And yes this was only released on the Playstation3, which is strange given the game's premise (and yes, it most certainly implies something...).

[[WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs We still wonder what brought Sega and Compile Heart to do this.]]

There is also a manga that details the events following the normal ending.

A sequel, HyperdimensionNeptuniaMk2, has been released in both Japan and North America. It has [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel a plethora of improvements over the original]], and even a cameo by Keiji Inafune. Yes, ''[[{{Capcom}} that]]'' [[MegamanLegends Keiji Inafune]].

And then another sequel is in place, Kami Jigen Game Neptune V (V stands for victory) has been [[http://www.siliconera.com/2012/04/09/next-neptunia-game-set-in-the-80s-coming-to-japan-this-summer/ announced]] and is slated for release in the summer of 2012 in Japan. It takes place in the 80s, [[AnachronismStew mostly anyway, as Vert and Leanbox are around and so is Noire despite no mention of a Lastation]].

For further background, [[LongList see the]] ConsoleWars, {{Playstation 3}}, {{Xbox 360}}, {{Wii}}, SegaGenesis,[[hottip:*:Saturn was made alongside Genesis]] OtherSegaSystems,[[hottip:*:includes background for Saturn]] {{SNES}}, {{Nintendo 64}}, PlayStation,[[hottip:*:for the console wars of those generations]] {{UsefulNotes/SNESCDROM}}, NintendoDS, and PlayStationPortable pages, in which the final two are for the sequel only.
----
!!Tropes common between both games:

* AbsurdlyHighLevelCap: There's a total of four [[DownloadableContent DLC]] updates that bump up the level cap in 200 and 300 level increments. Eventually, the level cap can be upped to 999!
* ArbitraryHeadcountLimit: Only three can fight at a time, with three others that can be rotated.
** This is increased to 4 in the sequel
* ApeShallNeverKillApe: During the events on Leanbox where the trio agrees to help the Parliment with the Basilicom, IF specifically states the party will not get involved in missions attacking other humans.
* BadassAdorable: Every playable character.
* BishoujoSeries: ''Every single'' important character is a woman and the guys at best ''get a portrait'' with a silhouette. And Mk-II is no exception except for the three male characters that are the villains.
** Lampshaded in one mission where Compa says they can recognize the boy/girl they're going to save because he/she is simply an NPC silhouette.
* BlandNameProduct: The "Dunglemaps" and "AMAZOO.NEP" sites.
* BreakMeter: It only last about ten seconds in the first game, making animation skipping a must to get the most out of it. It lasts much longer in the second game.
* BreastExpansion: Applies in one way or another to all of the goddesses when they powerup, but is most noticeable with Neptune and Blanc, the latter because her breasts grow up one letter in cup size, and the former because she goes from flat-chested to generous E-cup breasts by virtue of her true body being much older-looking than her avatar.
* BribingYourWayToVictory: For a small fee of real money, one can pay to get a few stat augmentations for various characters.
* BossDissonance: Comes in both varieties. Some of the dungeons have random {{Mooks}} be so powerful. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you're going for [[RankInflation S Ranks]]), the bosses are so easy that it's an insult. This trope is especially prevalent in dungeons where you're supposed to find the boss of the dungeon and kill it. Othertimes the random {{Mooks}} are exceptionally weak while the boss is [[ThatOneBoss just ridiculously overpowered]]. [[ItGotWorse Worse yet are easy dungeons that end with a]] SequentialBoss fight; you've been [[ScratchDamage whittled down]] just enough to put you out of reach of your [[ScrappyMechanic Item Skills]] but still low enough for one phase of the boss to [[CoupDeGrace finish the job instantly.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Every goddess is this. Strangely, no one complains about it.
* CallingYourAttacks: You can also name them! Can't add new spaces, though...
** Nisa is especially prone to this. She even does this for her regular attacks and lampshades it in her introductory cutscene when she did it as a warning to avoid hitting someone.
* CharacterBlog: All three goddesses have one. They're mostly just SeinfeldianConversation material, such as Black Heart going slightly cat-crazy and White Heart discussing how tangerines "kick ass".
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Each girl wears clothes that match the company she represents.
* CoolShip: In the opening sequence, we see a jet plane while Neptune is being shown. Fans would assume that since this is an RPG, this is what people are gonna be using as a mode of transportation even though you don't travel on the world map. [[spoiler:However, later on in the game, Neptune as Purple Heart gets a second LimitBreak [[InSovietRussiaTropeMocksYou where SHE transforms into that jet]] and fires off a WaveMotionGun. Sadly, [[RammingAlwaysWorks no ramming attack]] even though the design really screams that the ship rams at opponents.]]
* CosmeticAward: Seems to be mocking the trophy and the achievements systems since doing ''something'' will already get you a trophy right off the bat. Start a New Game? You already got your first trophy! Finished the tutorial stage? You get a trophy!
** Indeed, except for a few trophies one must actively pursue, the majority of them are earned just playing the game without any extraneous effort.
** Taken UpToEleven in the sequel where before you even have your first fight against Judge The Hard / CFW Judge, you already get ''three'' trophies.
* CutAndPasteEnvironments: One of the letdowns of the game is that you see backgrounds from ''RecordOfAgarestWar'', ''VideoGame/TrinityUniverse'', and ''ArTonelico''. You also see monsters that were seen in ''VideoGame/CrossEdge'' and ''VideoGame/TrinityUniverse''.
* DateCrepe: In one of the bonus art designed by the company, Noire and Neptune do this, as well as Blanc and Vert.
* DeathAsComedy:
-->'''Jade''': I'm a member of the Guild. I live on Leanbox, but I don't follow Lady Green Heart...
-->'''Neptune''': ...Why're you telling me now? What's up with this?
-->'''Jade''': [[TooDumbToLive I... I'm into girls... like... Lady White Heart.]]
-->*grack*
-->'''IF''': ...And that's that. You finished him off.
-->'''Neptune''': Oops. Well, that was for ruining the moment.
* DesignItYourselfEquipment: You can edit your character's outfits and the goddesses' processor units for some stat adjustments.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: You may have goddesses on your side, but several party members are just regular humans and only two of them have any serious combat experience. The game's backstory reveals that humans beating up an evil goddess has happened at least once before and the road to Celestia was sealed off to keep bad humans from attempting it.
* [[DigitalPiracyIsEvil Digital Piracy Is EVIL!]]: Well, if your BigBad is the personification of piracy (known as [[TakeThat Arfoire]]), then this trope definitely applies.
** The DLC 5pb recruitment story takes this to {{Anvilicious}} levels.
* DontTryThisAtHome: Said by Gust in a scene where she mixes a bunch of different energy drinks together.
* DownloadableContent: You can bump up the level cap, give the characters new clothes, add four playable characters and add new sidequests.
* DubNameChange: Magiquone and Nippon Ichi, who are now named Arfoire and Nisa, respectively. Magiquone is a play on Magicon, the name of a flash cart sold in Japan, whereas in America, the most popular flash cart is the R4 (so they changed the name of the boss so people would get the anti-piracy overtones). NISA is an acronym for Nippon Ichi's American branch.
** Neptune's nickname for IF goes from Ai(I)-chan to Iffy.
** In the sequel, the villains that are named [Blank] the Hard are renamed as CFW [Blank]. In this case, CFW stands for [[FunWithAcronyms Criminal of the Free World]].
* DuelBoss: Neptune vs. Arfoire later in the game.
** When you are trying to rally a goddess under your banner, they will join you only if you beat them in a one-on-one. Green Heart, despite her passiveness during her arc, packs a bloody punch and can kill you in two shots.
* {{Emoticon}}: Histoire seems to really like using this in her fairy mode.
* EndGamePlus
* ExponentialPotential: You get so many attack choices that you will lose track of around ''one-fourth'' of them.
* {{Fanservice}}: The first CG you get? A {{Lolicon}} fanservice featuring Compa wrapping bandages around Neptune's ''body''. It goes on from there.
** [[FridgeLogic It's a console wars video game. THE WHOLE THING is Fanservice.]]
* GainaxBounce: Happens with some of the [=CGs=] as we get a slight "boing" when the female character has a nice rack.
** Even when the character doesn't have much of a rack, this happens. [[ACupAngst IF even gets some of the "boing"]] after she falls from running into Neptune.
* GenreSavvy: What does Neptune say when she discovers Jade dying?
-->'''Neptune''': Oh, yep. Death flag triggered. I kinda guessed he was one of those gonna-die-[=NPCs=] when I met him. Is he okay?
-->'''IF''': [[MoodDissonance H-How can you act like that when someone is dying?]] Compa, can't you do something?
-->'''Compa''': [[FunnyMoments I wish I could, but I can't do anything about a triggered flag or a bad ending route he chose...]]
* TheGlomp: Neptune does this to Noire in one scene. She does it to Compa many times, too.
* GondorCallsForAid: Neptune wants the other goddesses to help, but they don't want to. She has to beat the crap out of them again to make them help.
* GratuitousEnglish: The initial names and descriptions for the trophies in the Japanese version had started out in English, but none of them seemed to have been proofread, so you get garbage like "deAtearmine" coming up. For reference, here's the trophy list for the [[http://www.ps3trophies.org/game/hyperdimension-neptune/trophies/ Japanese version]], and the list for the [[http://www.justpushstart.com/2011/01/25/hyperdimension-neptunia-trophy-list-complete-w-hidden-trophies/ English version]]. Now, the English version's trophy list has superseded the Japanese one; anyone playing either version will see the English version's proper trophy list rather than the Japanese version's garbage one.
* GratuitousGerman: Quite a bit, actually, mostly with Blanc whose attacks have garbled names such as "Todlichschlag" (if they were going for "deadly strike", it would have to be "tödlicher Schlag"), but other characters also get in on it, like Neptune's and Nepgear's CombinationAttack in the sequel, "Violet Schwestern" ("violet sisters" or "purple sisters" would be "Violette Schwestern").
* TheGodsMustBeLazy: The goddesses spend more time on their personal affairs and bonking heads than actually running their lands. Vert averts this later in the game by going out and actively fighting monsters.
* GodsNeedPrayerBadly: Goddesses gain power with belief. [[spoiler:Arfoire uses this to gain power again by spreading false overlord rumors and harvesting their fear.]]
** This is actually a gameplay mechanic in the form of shares. More shares translates to more faith and power in a goddess. A certain amount is needed in order to recruit the goddess of each land.
* GuideDangIt: It's an Idea Factory game, which means an incredibly obscure undocumented system must be used to reach the GoldenEnding.
** The game fails to mention that Neptune dying in battle has a hidden penalty and that if she dies too many times it can permanently lock you out of events -- [[spoiler: including the events to reach said ending]]!
* HaveYouSeenMyGod: Planeptune's Basilicom is understandably upset when Purple Heart doesn't show up when the goddesses start arriving. [[spoiler:And in the GoldenEnding, all four goddesses call it quits and leave Historie to create a new goddess to rule in their place.]]
* {{Hotblooded}}: Blanc/White Heart and Nisa as shown in the trailer.
* ImmortalImmaturity: All of the goddesses tend to act this way.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: The worst offender has to be Compa who uses a ''syringe'' that shoots bullets! This is even [[{{LampshadeHanging}} Lampshaded]] by IF at one point in the game.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast: No guys except as unnamed, silhouetted [=NPCs=].
** The sequel adds three HumongousMecha male characters. They're villains, and not exactly humanoid. [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman How close to being humanoid they are seems to be in direct proportion to]] [[AntiVillain how sympathetic you could be to them and what they personify.]]
* InformedEquipment: Averted. Aside from the rings and bracelets that serve as armor, every equipment change to your characters will show up. Heck, two of the equipment slots are dedicated just for outfits and accessories to customize them.
* InSeriesNickname: Compa, and later Vert, call Neptune as Nepu-Nepu (or Nep-Nep).
** Vert later calls IF Ai-chan (or Iffy), which flusters IF to no end.
** Thunder Tits for Green Heart, as coined by White Heart.
** Ganache is called "Solicitor" by IF or "Mr." Solicitor by Compa.
* InstrumentOfMurder: 5pb uses a guitar as her weapon. If she uses a special attack, she will play it. But in normal hits, she will smack the target with it.
* {{Jerkass}}: Ganache and '''HOW!'''
* {{Kiai}}: Neptune: [[SuperRobotWarsAlpha CHESTO! (Chest buster!)]]
* LampshadeHanging: It's an RPG that knows it's a video game and pokes fun at video games. There's a lot of this.
* LazyBackup: If your three frontline characters die, it's a game over with no explanation whatsoever when you have ''eight'' (ten if you include 5pb and RED) characters in your party. The sequel also has this problem except you have ''fifteen characters'' to choose from and yet when the four on the frontlines die, it's a game over.
* LimitBreak: Neptune's "Neptune Break" as well as Nisa's "[[ZettaiHeroProject ZHP Legend!!]]"
* LostForever: Any monster that only appears in a single scenario dungeon, if they are not killed before said dungeon is completed.
* MeaningfulName: The alternate personalities of the names of the goddesses are the names of colors [[EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench in French]].
* MenstrualMenace: IF assumes Arfoire is doing this the first time they fight.
* MoodWhiplash: Jade's final moments are filled with this.
-->'''Neptune''': What's up? A favor? Ask me anything! Oh, but no touching. Got it? No touching!
-->'''Jade''': Don't treat me like a pervert when I'm about to die.
* MoeAnthropomorphism: The point of the game. Let's just start with the {{PlayStation 3}}, {{Xbox 360}}, {{Wii}} and the (unreleased) Sega Neptune.
* MultipleEndings
* NamesTheSame: This Black Heart is definitely not [[GhostRider the son]] [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2 of Mephisto]] nor a boss from ''BattleGaregga''.
* NeverTrustATrailer: The game advertises that you get to play as the goddesses in the middle part (or at the very least, early-middle part) of the game. [[spoiler:You only get to play with them in the final dungeon and possibly post-game.]]
* NewGamePlus
* NobodyPoops: Averted in one instance where Nep-Nep nearly misses out on Nisa's introduction by spending most of the preceding battle on the toilet.
** Averted in another cutscene where Neppermint admits to being a little too excited about a visitor.
** Face a foe who's a significant number of levels above you and Nep-Nep might start the fight by requesting [[BringMyBrownPants a change of underwear]].
* NoFourthWall: It's a ConsoleWars game; it's to be expected that they'll smash the fourth wall.
* ObviouslyEvil: Arfoire, [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by Ganache.
* OneTimeDungeon: All dungeons that are part of a story scenario.
* OnlyOneName: None of the characters in the game have a last name.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Histoire.
* OurGodsAreGreater: Uhh, duh...
* PaletteSwap: Many of the monsters use this.
* PartyInMyPocket: Well, obviously! Then again, you can switch out the on-screen avatar, which is actually important because different characters have different functions on the map screen. Neptune pulls out a hammer to smash obstacles, Compa rings a bell to attract monsters, and IF uses her search mode to uncover invisible chests.
* PowerFloats: Whenever Neptune, Blanc, Vert, and Noire transform to their respective goddess forms, they always float in the air.
* RainbowPimpGear: Generally averted with the outfits and accessories you normally get for the characters, but you make some truly outrageous processor combinations for the goddesses.
* RankInflation: Most of the dungeons have timers on them. The faster you finish the dungeon via beating the boss, finding the secret treasure, or getting lucky with item drops from random encounters, the better your rank will be. This always often leads to a BraggingRightsReward when you beat the record times of other players.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: All of the goddesses.
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: Nisa spends one series of events chasing down a pair of bandit brothers. When she saves them from a monster, the duo realize it's not such a CrapsackWorld out there, pull a HeelFaceTurn and decide to help others for a change.
* RuleThirtyFour: For an Idea Factory game, this is perhaps the most popular choice as ''VideoGame/CrossEdge'' and ''RecordOfAgarestWar'', despite being much more ecchi, had little to no RuleThirtyFour. For example, there are official NSFW dakimakura covers of Noire. That's all we need to say.
* SavingTheWorld: Both figuratively and literally (figuratively being Histoire who is the "Tomb of the World" and literally being "kill Magiquone/Arfoire and all of piracy").
* ScriptedBattle: The first "battle" in the game is Purple Heart vs. the three other [=CPUs=].
* SelfDeprecation: The weakest and least versatile characters in the game are IF and Compa. They don't even get any sort of LimitBreak, something even the DLC characters were given.
** Averted in the sequel where they get some new [[LimitBreak Limit Breaks]] ''and'' a CombinationAttack with each other.
* SkinshipGrope: It's implied Neptune does this to Compa during one of the events when she invites her for some BathtubBonding, but nothing is shown except IF describing it.
* TheSyndicate: The Guild. Divided into two groups; Moderatists, who are criminal only in that they [[CategoryTraitor don't worship the goddess of their world]] but are otherwise completely normal people, and [[WellIntentionedExtremist Extremists]] who are willing to resort to violence over pretty much anything.
* TakeThat: Unsurprisingly, there are a few zingers in here, but it's mostly gentle poking instead of straight-up insulting and no company really gets it worse than the others.
* [[ThankingTheViewer Thanking The Player:]] In the [[GoldenEnding Golden Ending,]] the main trio directly thanks you for getting them through the game.
* TransformationSequence: The four goddesses every time you have them transform in the middle of a battle. Fortunately, you can always skip it by pressing L2.
* TransformingMecha: [[spoiler:Later in the game, ''Neptune'' transforms into the jet plane seen in the [[SpoilerOpening opening credits]] as one of her [[LimitBreak Limit Breaks]].]]
* TwentyBearAsses: Many of the quests involve this.
* VideoGamePerversityPotential: The first game allows players to use pictures stored in their PlayStation3 units for "R/W disc" special attacks -- even pornographic ones. The second game allows Nepgear's CPU outfit to be customized via the Costume Canvas system, and "nude mods" have been made. [[http://nisamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=6154&start=0 Have fun.]]
* VisualNovel: With some [[{{Ecchi}} H-game]] references.
* VitriolicBestBuds: The four Hearts, even more so in the sequel.
** IF's relation to Neptune and Compa.
* WoodenKatanasAreEvenBetter: You can equip a wooden katana for Neptune which is pretty strong during the early game.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Let's see, we've got: purple, green, light blue, black, white, brown, pink, and blue. And this is just from the main cast.

* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Each girl wears clothes that match the company she represents.

* DeathAsComedy:

-->*grack*
* EndGamePlus
* {{Jerkass}}: Ganache and '''HOW!'''
* MultipleEndings
* NewGamePlus
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Histoire.
* OurGodsAreGreater: Uhh, duh...
* VisualNovel: With some [[{{Ecchi}} H-game]] references.

* BadassAdorable: Every playable character.
* BishoujoSeries: ''Every single'' important character is a woman and the guys at best ''get a portrait'' with a silhouette. And Mk-II is no exception except for the three male characters that are the villains.

* {{Jerkass}}: Ganache and '''HOW!'''
* MultipleEndings
* NewGamePlus
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Histoire.
* OurGodsAreGreater: Uhh, duh...
* VisualNovel: With some [[{{Ecchi}} H-game]] references.
