I explained it on the discussion page. The trope belongs here due to not being extreme and sadistic enough to be classified as an evil trope.

** Tsundere Akane Tendo generally leans towards NeutralGood behavior, being respectful of authority figures until they prove unworthy of that respect and willing to bend rules if she absolutely must, but whether this gives her this alignment, or she is more ChaoticNeutral or a possible "average" of ChaoticGood is a BaseBreaker issue. On one hand, she is a generally pleasant, helpful, compassionate, naive, hard-working, idealistic, and very heroic person, admired by her peers for her general demeanor, who is willing to forgive extreme wrongdoings (for example, return unprovoked attempted murder with saving Shampoo's life, or similarly helps and is compassionate towards Taro after he holds her hostage) and she has regularly been willing to sacrifice herself for the safety of others, most frequently Ranma himself, such as putting her life at risk to find a cure for Ranma's ModeLock, or even consciously trading her own for his through magical items when he had been lethally poisoned. On the other hand, she can also be stubborn, self-centered and quite volatile. After Ranma and her big sister Nabiki each separately makie fun of or belittling her, Akane unthinkingly destroys the balcony, and Ranma saves Nabiki from the fall, whereas his fiancee sprains her ankle. Akane had been very afraid for Nabiki's safety, but still felt sore from feeling like an unwanted joke, and makes a careless insincere statement that 'he could take Nabiki instead if he liked her so much', which Nabiki uses as manipulation to transfer the engagement instead. The biggest contention is that she is easily set off when Ranma is either found in extremely compromising NotWhatItLooksLike scenarios, or he repeatedly stomps on her sense of self-worth and exertions by insensitively, arrogantly, or gloatingly insulting her most sensitive spots and manic efforts over and over. It is understandable that she gets upset about this, and she does seem to have some form of autistic awkwardness with figuring out or difficulty managing her feelings combined with a mood-disorder, as her volatile feelings are quite genuine and not so easy to dismiss as 'spiels' or tantrums, but the extremely violent reactions usually definitely seem excessive... although it is a comedy setting with superhumanly strong characters so it is exaggerated for comedic effect. Hence instead of a slap it's a fridge in the face or punching him towards the horizon, but she also has a tendency to unthinkingly lash out verbally when this happens, and then recurrently feels ashamed and apologises if she is shown to have been wrong. She also makes an extreme effort with her cooking, but as with various other things Akane gets so worked up about succeeding with everything, living up to high standards, and stop feeling worthless that she turns too tense to develop any skills or managing to focus on and understand the recipes , so it's usually very inedible. Ranma's consistent means of dealing with it is not exactly to "politely encourage her to relax, help her to learn to do better, and better luck next time", it's usually in the vein of calling it uneataable slop or toxic waste, and rudely running away. However, after some humiliating instruction from Ranma's mother Nodoka, the particular problem of not tasting her food and making it downright horrible is actually something Akane has worked off by the Ryugensawa forest arc. She is here very aware of her shortcomings, does taste her food, can make simple dishes such as curry, tofu, or tea, and is surprised and overjoyed if anyone likes it. She is still not a good cook but no longer a dangerous one. Regardless, some fans consider her an inverted JerkWithAHeartOfGold, meaning someone who is only faking all of her good intents and displays her true nature only when thoroughly upset. The BelligerentSexualTension in combination with his constant belittling insults also make her behave much worse towards her fiance, Ranma Saotome, than anyone else. For comparison, in the storyline covering Mousse's return to Japan, she forgives him in a matter of moments and offers to help him try and get Shampoo to fall in love with him -- despite the fact he just kidnapped her and threatened to give her a Jusenkyo duck curse a few minutes ago. Later that storyline, when Ranma dislikes the idea of throwing a fight to let Mousse seem strong enough for Shampoo (who Ranma considers as a murderous pest) to accept him, she reminds Ranma that he might get rid of of Shampoo's cat form following him around, which is extra bothersome given his intense ailurophobia, and he goes along with it until Mousse decides to to use killing combat. Whether Akane's argument qualifies as morally offensive or not is a YourMileageMayVary. Others simply don't like her emotional naivete, or think that she hasn't worked hard enough for her extreme skills (she actually has and does train hard, but no longer has any instructors or sparring-partners to do so efficiently).
** Ranma Saotome is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold more often than not, shrugging off frequent abuse and manipulations as no big deal and capable of feeling genuinely sorry for an unrepentant attempted murderer (of himself, no less). Yet, when he feels sufficiently irked, he can be one of the most petty, childish, spiteful, manipulative, and even outright cruel members of the cast, with notable deeds including recurrently playing mind-games with Ryoga Hibiki (who, admittedly, is frequently trying to pound him to prove he's stronger and wants to woo Ranma's fiancee), using his (generally unwanted) paramours for ego-gratification, insulting Akane in clearly sensitive areas (although she does tease him to a lesser extent herself), or in one case using her feelings for him as a weapon to get rid of a power-suit that made her stronger than himself out of jealousy (although this was his limit, as he regretted his actions and was about to repent when interrupted), and trying to frighten off Ukyo Kuonji when she believed he intended to live up to a forgotten childhood vow. However, like certain other cast member he mostly comes as meaning well, but generally completely lacking the common sense to channel it outside of crisis situations, so he may fall under ChaoticGood depending on interpretation.

** Tsundere Akane Tendo Tendo generally leans towards NeutralGood behavior, being NeutralGood, although given her polarizing effect on the fandom it is a matter of some dispute. As a type-B (often Flanderization flanderized as type-A) tsundere she is typically polite and friendly towards people and respectful of authority figures until they prove unworthy of that respect and willing to bend rules if she absolutely must, but whether this gives her this alignment, or authority, unless she is more ChaoticNeutral or a possible "average" given reason to behave otherwise. Even there, she's often inclined to be forgiving of ChaoticGood is a BaseBreaker issue. Her fiancé Ranma, however, endlessly falls afoul of her BerserkButton, sometimes Jerkass intentionally and very heroic person, admired by sometimes not, and her peers for her harsh treatment of him can blur the line between the series' general demeanor, who is willing to forgive extreme wrongdoings (for example, return unprovoked attempted murder with saving Shampoo's life, or similarly helps and is compassionate towards Taro after he holds her hostage) and she has regularly been willing to sacrifice herself for use of ComedicSociopathy, the safety of others, most frequently Ranma himself, such as putting her life at risk to find a cure for Ranma's ModeLock, or even consciously trading her own for his through magical items when he had been lethally poisoned. ** Ukyo Kuonji is a generally pleasant, affable, self-reliant, and loyal girl-next-door (choice of clothes aside) who tries to be a friend to Ranma, and even gets on relatively well with Akane outside of competition. She has romantic fantasies about Ranma, and clings to whatever scraps of apparent kindness he throws her way, yet is capable of being very manipulative and underhanded, setting violent ambushes, or using threats of violence to get her way. She also has a tendency to whack any male she finds annoying or stupid with her giant steel spatula, no insults necessary, and together with Shampoo and Kodachi has beat up Ranma in various melee brawls. However, she does not appear to be as amoral and ruthless as the other two, as she can be compassionate, loyal, or charitable, such as allowing Konatsu to live with her despite being a naive bother (working for slave salary), is loyal about her friends in the restaurant business, allowed the Tendos to stay in her house after they briefly lost their own (Ranma came with them though, and they shortly returned the favour by caring for her when she got sick), or avoided killing Genma when first introduced despite that he turned her into an outcast, prefers to use non-violent plots half the time, and never actually states an intent to kill anybody, but when teamed up with Shampoo and Kodachi this line can turn very blurry, as regardless if she only intended to beat Nabiki, Hinako, or (during the wedding) Akane unconscious, the other two would go all the way if convenient. In the manga she also seems more cynical and than Akane, when being much more suspicious about Miss Hinako's intents towards Ranma in an exchange between them. In the anime she is kinder however, and more likely to fall into mild ChaoticGood. She also has a strong schism between being easily flustered and embarrassed (blushing embarrassment-beating ahoy!) if Ranma compliments her or seems romantically offensive, but almost downright lecherous as long as she takes the initiative ("Move your finger from that fotograph! I want to see his ****!" "Remember when we slept together as children? Hurry over to the bed! Eh-he-he-he" (Drooling) "Just relax and let your buddy Ucchan wash your back...", but whether that has any relevance is anyone's guess.

This on top of having an AmbiguouslyAutistic lack of common sense and hard time processing or controlling emotional reactions, and manic-depressive mood disorder to start with. Falling down into a sewer, trying to save and get out his backpack and fend off an overwhelmingly larger alligator, then train hard by the fire until he sleeps alone on the ground is a common day for him. Regardless if some, far more entitled people are comfortable with the idea or not, this really does make his good intents far more laudable. Most people would have turned into serial-killers for a tenth of the crap Ryoga has gone through. On the other he is driven almost entirely by his emotions rather than logic, which among other things made him go along with when Akane decided to take him as a pet, since even that was better than being lonely all the time and allowed him to stay close to and protect his unrequited crush (though not in a lustful manner). He is also an honorable rival and will gracefully admit defeat in a formal battle (while insisting he'll win next time). Ryoga is largely a creature of whim, but is usually harmless, and quite emotionally retarded. A popular fandom myth is that he blames all of his troubles on Ranma, but at least in the manga this is inaccurate, as he lets go of his grudge for the curse rather quickly, to replace it with rivalry in battle-prowess (it gives both of them something to do) and for Akane's heart. By the Shishi Hokodan arc he states himself that he is annoyed with Ranma for these reasons and consistently making fun of him, and he has saved Ranma's life more times than the reverse, or Akane for that matter. This despite that Ranma really did something far far worse to him than the traumatising Nekoken-training Genma put Ranma through, which frequently is lambasted by the same fans who consider anything horrible that happens to Ryoga as a sadistic joke or treat Ranma's far more petty regular grievances as worthy RighteousAnger, even though the author has stated outright that Ryoga is far worse off. However, Ryoga has had some darker moments. Some fans think that Ryoga wanted to kill Ranma in the first chapters, and stopped shortly after he fell for Akane, but he never explicitly does so, simply yell out a "prepare to die!" that he never acts upon, and the rivalry gradually turns far less heated. Ryoga's worst moment occurred when he had accidentally hit Ranma with a LovePotion, which turned his rival into an AxCrazy Yandere who obsessively tried to force herself/himself on him, and kill him and any other love-interests if he didn't accept the advances. Ryoga turns desperate and confused, and isn't a creative thinker, so the only thing he comes up with as a solution is to kill Ranma, although thankfully he is far too noble to actually go through with murdering someone who doesn't resist, but after Ranma then makes him furious by kissing him and starts jumping around Ryoga begins to chase him/her, and later saves Akane from Ranma by beating him/her in a fight, and to his humiliation is then mistaken as a "sick pervert" by both Ranma and far more importantly, Akane. Immediately following this Ryoga is apparently feeling sore enough to behave very contrary to earlier and later similar situations, when he claims to wish to help Ranma find a cure for her curse lock, but then strikes her unconscious and takes the curse-locking ladle for Mousse and himself, mistakenly thinking that using hot water will cure him. However, Ryoga shortly makes up for it by saving Ranma's life and then enters a closing chasm to get Ranma the true cure. One moment that ideally sums up Ryoga happens during the Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion story: Ryoga pulls a BigDamnHeroes moment by showing up to take out the trio of Mousse, Tatewaki Kuno and Principal Kuno, claiming "IWasJustPassingThrough" and that it's wrong to pick on the weak as he does so. After confirming Ranma truly is as weak as the rumors say, he turns very sad for Ranma's sake and losing his WorthyOpponent, and comically punts him into ATwinkleInTheSky LEO. Of course some fans simply dislike Ryoga on principle because he's miserable, emotionally retarded, perpetually confused, and lacks common sense, since it's just too much to take in, alternately rationalising that it's all only a self-imposed attitude problem, never mind that Ryoga has no idea how to solve it and needs external guidance for that type of development, or in some cases even agitatedly state how much they want anyone like him to be even further tortured, raped, burchered, abused and murdered, with the parents committing suicide for the shame.

** Ryoga Hibiki is a solid, but sympathetic, example of this trope, struggling between a general attitude of being self-centered and a genuine desire to be noble. He can be pretending to be Akane's pet so he can get close to her (though not in a lustful manner) one moment, and then being an honorable rival and admitting defeat in battle gracefully (while insisting he'll win next time) the next. Driven more by emotions than logic, Ryoga is very much a creature of whim, but is usually harmless, as he is, quite frankly, rather childish. However, his desires can drive him down some dark paths -- in one infamous story, having accidentally hit Ranma with a LovePotion and discovering that, yes, Ranma truly is in love with him now, he coldbloodly steals away with "her" into the deep woods, digs a grave and gets ready to crush her skull so he can both be rid of Ranma forever, all the while eagerly imagining how Akane will happily fly into his arms after hearing Ranma is dead and buried. Thankfully, he is far too inherently noble to successfully go through with any of his nastiest deeds (in the aforementioned event, Ryoga finds he just cannot bring himself to kill even Ranma when she is channeling IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy so much that she will just let him do it), and he does have moments of genuine sacrifice, generosity and nobility that counter his acts of betrayal, selfishness and self-righteousness. He is also an honorable rival and admitting defeat in battle will gracefully admit defeat in a formal battle (while insisting he'll win next time) the next. Driven more by emotions than logic, time). Ryoga is very much largely a creature of whim, but is usually harmless, and quite emotionally retarded. A popular fandom myth is that he blames all of his troubles on Ranma, but at least in the manga this is inaccurate, as he is, quite frankly, lets go of his grudge for the curse rather childish. quickly, to replace it with rivalry in battle-prowess (it gives both of them something to do) and for Akane's heart. However, his desires can drive him down Ryoga has had some dark paths -- darker moments. Some fans think that Ryoga wanted to kill Ranma in one infamous story, having the first chapters, and stopped shortly after he fell for Akane, but he never explicitly does so, simply yell out a "prepare to die!" that he never acts upon, and the rivalry gradually turns far less heated. Ryoga's worst moment occurred when he had accidentally hit Ranma with a LovePotion LovePotion, which turned his rival into an AxCrazy Yandere who obsessively tried to force herself/himself on him, and discovering that, yes, Ranma truly is in love kill him and any other love-interests if he didn't accept the advances. Ryoga turns desperate and confused, and isn't a creative thinker, so the only thing he comes up with him now, he coldbloodly steals away with "her" into the deep woods, digs as a grave and gets ready solution is to crush her skull so he can both be rid of Ranma forever, all the while eagerly imagining how Akane will happily fly into his arms after hearing Ranma is dead and buried. Thankfully, kill Ranma, although thankfully he is far too inherently noble to successfully actually go through with any of his nastiest deeds (in the aforementioned event, murdering someone who doesn't resist, but after Ranma then makes him furious by kissing him and starts jumping around Ryoga finds he just cannot bring himself begins to kill even chase him/her, and later saves Akane from Ranma by beating him/her in a fight, and to his humiliation is then mistaken as a "sick pervert" by both Ranma and far more importantly, Akane. Immediately following this Ryoga is apparently feeling sore enough to behave very contrary to earlier and later similar situations, when she is channeling IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy so much he claims to wish to help Ranma find a cure for her curse lock, but then strikes her unconscious and takes the curse-locking ladle for Mousse and himself, mistakenly thinking that she using hot water will just let him do it), cure him. However, Ryoga shortly makes up for it by saving Ranma's life and he does have moments of genuine sacrifice, generosity and nobility that counter his acts of betrayal, selfishness and self-righteousness. then enters a closing chasm to get Ranma the true cure. After confirming Ranma truly is as weak as the rumors say, he declares he can't stand to see Ranma like this, would rather see him dead, turns very sad for Ranma's sake and losing his WorthyOpponent, and comically punts him into ATwinkleInTheSky LEO rather than continue looking at him.LEO]].

* Ranma 1/2 has characters that swing all over the CharacterAlignment scale, with only a few who can truly be said to fit into a definitive alignment (Kasumi Tendo, Nabiki Tendo, Cologne, Happosai) -- and even they are open to different readings. Especially between the two versions (the anime treats the other members of Ranma's UnwantedHarem much more sympathetically than the original manga does), most of the main crew can switch between NeutralEvil or ChaoticEvil malice, ChaoticGood benevolence and sympathy, and just self-centeredness, which means that ChaoticNeutral (and NeutralEvil, for characters more frequently used as villains) is more of the 'average' alignment then anything else.
On one hand, she is a generally pleasant, helpful, compassionate, naive, hard-working, idealistic, and very heroic person, admired by her peers for her general demeanor, who is willing to forgive extreme wrongdoings (for example, return unprovoked attempted murder with saving Shampoo's life, or similarly helps and is compassionatetowards Taro after he holds her hostage) and she has regularly been willing to sacrifice herself for the safety of others, most frequently Ranma himself, such as putting her life at risk to find a cure for Ranma's ModeLock, or even consciously trading her own for his through magical items when he had been lethally poisoned. The BelliggerentSexualTension in combination with his constant belittling insults also make her behave much worse towards her fiance, Ranma Saotome, than anyone else. For comparison, in the storyline covering Mousse's return to Japan, she forgives him in a matter of moments and offers to help him try and get Shampoo to fall in love with him -- despite the fact he just kidnapped her and threatened to give her a Jusenkyo duck curse a few minutes ago. Later that storyline, when Ranma dislikes the idea of throwing a fight to let Mousse seem strong enough for Shampoo (who Ranma considers as a ruthless pest) to accept him, she reminds Ranma that he might get rid of of Shampoo's cat form following him around, which is extra bothersome given his intense ailurophobia, and he goes along with it until Mousse decides to to use killing combat. Whether Akane's argument qualifies as morally offensive or not is a YourMileageMayVary. Others simply don't like her emotional naivete.

Whether Akane's argument qualifies as morally offensive or not is a YourMileageMayVaryYourMileageMayVary. Others simply don't like her emotional naivete.

She has romantic fantasies about Ranma, and clings to whatever scraps of apparent kindness he throws her way, yet is capable of being very manipulative and underhanded, setting violent ambushes, or using threats of violence to get her way. She also has a tendency to whack any male she finds annoying or stupid with her giant steel spatula, no insults necessary. However necessary, and together with Shampoo and Kodachi has beat up Ranma in various melee brawls. However, she does not appear to be as amoral and ruthless as Shampoo and Kodachi, the other two, as she can be compassionate, loyal, or charitable, such as allowing Konatsu to live with her despite being a naive bother (working for slave salary), is loyal about her friends in the restaurant business, allowed the Tendos to stay in her house after they briefly lost their own (Ranma came with them though, and they shortly returned the favour by caring for her when she got sick), or avoided killing Genma when first introduced despite that he turned her into an outcast, prefers to use non-violent plots half the time, and never actually states an intent to kill anybody, but when teamed up with Shampoo and Kodachi this line can turn very blurry, as regardless if she only intended to beat Nabiki, Hinako, or (during the wedding) Akane unconscious, the other two would go all the way if convenient. In the manga she also seems more cynical and than Akane, when being much more suspicious about Miss Hinako's intents towards Ranma in an exchange between them. In the anime she is kinder however, and more likely to fall into mild ChaoticGood. She also has a strong schism between being easily flustered and embarrassed (ema (blushing embarrassment-beating ahoy!) if Ranma compliments her or seemsseems romantically offensive, but almost downright lecherous as long as she takes the initiative ("Move your finger from that fotograph! I want to see his ****!" "Remember when we slept together as children? Hurry over to the bed! Eh-he-he-he" (Drooling) "Just relax and let your buddy Ucchan wash your back...", but whether that has any relevance is anyone's guess.

** Tsundere Akane Tendo generally leans towards NeutralGood behavior, being respectful of authority figures until they prove unworthy of that respect and willing to bend rules if she absolutely must, but whether this gives her this alignment, or she is more ChaoticNeutra or a possible average of ChaoticGood is a BaseBreaker issue. The BelliggerentSexualTensionin combination with his constant belittling insults also make her behave much worse towards her fiance, Ranma Saotome, than anyone else.
