The first book, ''Paola Santiago and the River of Tears'', was published August 4 2020, and the sequel, ''Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares'' is coming out summer 2021.

The basic premise is that all the elements of Mexican folklare, such as chupacabras and La Llorona, are all real and breed in the Rift, another dimension which connects to our own. The titular Paola "Pao" Santiago doesn't believe in Mexican folklore, considering herself a practical scientist, until her friend Emma is kidnapped and a mysterious, snarky girl pops into her dreams. Following vague instructions given by her other friend, Dante's, grandma, Pao and Dante find their way into a dangerous new world where chupacabras and La Llorona are very, very real and very, very much want to kill them. Along the way, Pao and Dante land at a camp for lost children that Pao's former bully runs, discover the secret about why Emma was kidnapped, and accept all the hidden emotions growing in them, like the budding romantic feelings they have for each other and Pao's resentment of her superstitious mother.

Paola "Pao" Santiago is a young Mexican-American girl living in Silver Springs, Arizona. Her mother is very superstitious, believing that ghosts like La Llorona haunt the Gila, which Silver Springs is located near to, but Pao hates that, feeling embarrassed that her mother believes such unscientific things.

Pao used to have horrible nightmares of La Llorona, but as she grows up, she throws herself into science, becoming fascinated with algae and astronomy, to try and replace the baseless fears with knowledge. At school, she has only two friends, Emma and Dante, although they've always been enough for her. One day, when she arranges for them to meet up at the Gila (unbeknownst to her mother), she arrives to find only Dante -- Emma's gone missing.

The strange dreams Pao used to have begin coming back, with a darker twist, and a new person appearing who warns her that Emma might die if she
doesn't believe in Mexican folklore, considering herself a practical scientist, until her friend Emma is kidnapped act quick enough. Dante's grandmother seems to know more than it seems, and a mysterious, snarky girl pops into her dreams. Following vague instructions given by her other friend, Dante's, grandma, she gives Pao and Dante find objects to help them in their way into a dangerous new world where chupacabras quest to save Emma and La Llorona urges them to leave before it's too late.

The superstitions Pao's derided her whole life
are very, very real real, and very, very much they want to kill them. Along the way, Pao and Dante land at a camp for lost children that Pao's former bully runs, discover the secret about why Emma was kidnapped, and accept all the hidden emotions growing in them, like the budding romantic her. To make matters worse, she's begun to develop feelings they have for each other Dante even as their relationship grows more strained -- oh, and Pao's resentment of her superstitious mother.also, that girl who drowned in the river? She's alive.

To save Emma, Pao will have to find the truth behind everything she thought was a lie.

* MissingWhiteWomanSyndrome: Discussed. Pao notes that Marisa, the girl who drowned the year before the story begins, was mostly remembered for being blonde and pretty, and she brings it up again when the police officer talks degradingly about Emma, wondering if he would still say that if he knew what Emma looked like (pale, with sandy blonde hair).
