** ''VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet'' is a mostly-lighthearted adventure (even by the series' standards). That all changes when you and your friends travel down to Area Zero and learn [[spoiler: Professor Sada/Turo is a MadScientist who's so obsessed with Pokémon from the distant past/future that they would risk letting them run rampant and destroy to present day's ecosystem. Then you learn that the professor is actually dead, killed as a consequence of their own obsession, and that you've been speaking with an AI duplicate they created, who's forced by the original professor's program to defend the time machine bringing the Paradox Pokémon in, even to the point of sending out a hostile version of the box legendary against children who are unable to send out their own Pokémon.]]

** Shadow the Hedgehog's introduction into franchise took the series down a much darker and grimmer path. ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' had a larger share of dark moments than any of the previous games but ultimately contained an upbeat tone. ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' (Shadow's debut) is certifiably a point at which the series started experimenting with much heavier themes and Shadow was certainly a catalyst in the series' move in that direction (which continued all the way up to ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed'').

*** Also from ''Sonic Adventure 2'', Dr. Gerald Robotnik is of the few villains in the franchise with no comedic traits whatsoever due to his tragic fate. Gerald was a highly respected scientist who wanted to help people through science. After his granddaughter Maria's death at GUN's hands and all blame for the ARK slaughter being pinned entirely on him, he quickly started becoming evil and ended up a wannabe OmnicidalManiac, as his FinalSpeech shows. While his mind was still intact he knew he would become a monster who could and would enact a plan to destroy the Earth if his descent into madness was not stopped.

* ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'' is as full of them as it is of lighthearted soundtracks and rainbows:
** ''VideoGame/KirbysAdventure'' has Nightmare, the first truly sinister villain, who intends to cause everyone pain, to the point that King Dedede, even after sealing him away, kept the inhabitants of Dream Land from dreaming to protect them from him, which was mistaken by Kirby for an evil plan.
** Zero. He does not appear in ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand2'' but is presumably the one who sent Dark Matter to [[DemonicPossession possess King Dedede]] and [[TheNightThatNeverEnds bring darkness to Dream Land]]. After a similar plot in ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand3'', he appears for the first time, and is perhaps one of the series' most frightening villains due to the blood when you fight him (including ''cutting himself and shooting his blood at you'', and ''ripping out his own eye''). And he returns as 02 in his final appearance in ''VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards'' (or else a different version of him takes his place), once again having Dark Matters possess Dedede and others and, though the blood is toned down, still menacing and sinister before he finally [[KilledOffForReal dies for good]].
** ''VideoGame/KirbyAndTheAmazingMirror'' has Dark Meta Knight, an evil counterpart to Meta Knight who defeats him and replaces him (though Meta Knight survives). And then you get his master, Dark Mind, who is a sinister conquerer of the mirror world who corrupted the Dimension Mirror with darkness and strongly resembles [[Franchise/TheLordOfTheRings Sauron]].
** To a lesser extent, Dark Nebula in ''VideoGame/KirbySqueakSquad''. His personality and ambitions are not fleshed out very much and he doesn't look nearly as menacing as Dark Mind, but [[spoiler: he does possess Daroach, and both King Dedede and Meta Knight really wanted him to not be released (even with the powerful Kirby around to fight him, who ends up easily destroying him nonetheless), to the point of Meta Knight fighting Kirby to try to prevent this.]] And he is also mentioned to be the ''ruler of the underworld''.
** ''VideoGame/KirbyMassAttack'' has the ''deathly evil'' Necrodeus, who not only is terrifying in looks to the point that Necrodeus' apperance is more fitting to a DarkFantasy instead of the SugarBowl of Kirby universe, but nearly kills Franchise/{{Kirby}} at the beginning of the game by [[CurbStompBattle splitting him into ten defenseless smaller Kirbies before proceeding to actually murder nine out of the ten while one of them escaped by literally following his heart]]. And that's only the beginning; every time Kirby leaves one of the islands, however many Kirbies are revived are captured by his mooks until only one of them is left (until Skullord's defeat, of course). You can have this guy to thank for sealing this game in CerebusSyndrome, as this adventure seems like a trip through Hell itself for the smaller, weaker ten Kirbies.
** ''VideoGame/KirbyTripleDeluxe'' has Queen Sectonia. She is a vain, cruel tyrant who has made the people of Floralia suffer for a long time, prompting them to call Kirby for help. Her henchman, Taranza, [[spoiler: controls King Dedede like a puppet]], and after assuming her OneWingedAngel form, Sectonia plans to suck the life force of everyone in Dream Land ''for all eternity''. It gets even worse when you realize she was originally a benevolent ruler before being permanently corrupted by the Dimension Mirror, either through an equally permanent corruption on the mirror by Dark Mind before his death, or the absolute hatred and vengeance of the very much alive Dark Meta Knight.
** ''VideoGame/KirbyAndTheRainbowCurse'' has [[spoiler: Dark Crafter]], who [[spoiler: possesses Claycia]] and [[TakenForGranite turns everyone on Pop Star into clay]], which is either effectively death to them until released (which he intended to last forever), or [[AndIMustScream has them fully conscious while petrified]], thus effectively (though temporarily, thanks to Kirby's heroics) wiping out an entire planet simply to gain power for himself. Even Kirby is affected by this and had Elline not come along when she did, Kirby would not have been able to save everyone else.
** ''VideoGame/KirbyPlanetRobobot'' has Star Dream, President Haltmann's master computer who [[spoiler: betrays and absorbs him (even [[CessationOfExistence deletes his soul]] in the non-canon True Arena)]]. Arguably one of the two most evil and dangerous villains in the series, Star Dream wishes to kill all organic life out of hate for it. It is also implied Star Dream influenced Haltmann to become a corrupt and greedy president and forget his goal of reviving his supposedly dead daughter.
** Finally, ''VideoGame/KirbyStarAllies'' has two: First, Hyness is perhaps the most insane and frightening villain in the series (possible exception of Zero and Necrodeus), a cult leader who sucks life from his three generals during the fight with him, and [[spoiler: sacrifices them and himself]] to release the god he worships, Void Termina, who is the other of the two most evil villains in the series; Void Termina destroys worlds [[ForTheEvulz for no reason]], with his ultimate goal being the destruction of all worlds, and is, like Necrodeus, evil incarnate (to the point that Friendship Hearts hurt him instead of turning him or having no effect on him). He may be the origin of Dark Matter and everything that controlled it such as Zero, Dark Mind, Dark Nebula, and the Master Crown, and the dark counterpart of Kirby (though he is still defeated by Kirby relatively easily). For the second phase of the battle you have to fight his heart.

** ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'' has [[MonsterClown Dimentio]]. He starts off as exhibiting some humorous personality quirks, much like his fellow minions of Count Bleck.

* ''VideoGame/KirbyMassAttack'' has the ''deathly evil'' Necrodeus, who not only is terrifying in looks to the point that Necrodeus' apperance is more fitting to a DarkFantasy instead of the SugarBowl of Kirby universe, but nearly kills Franchise/{{Kirby}} at the beginning of the game by [[CurbStompBattle splitting him into ten defenseless smaller Kirbies before proceeding to actually murder nine out of the ten while one of them escaped by literally following his heart]].

And he returns as 02 in his final appearance in ''VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards'' (or else a different version of him takes his place), once again having Dark Matters possess Dedede and others and, though the blood is toned down, still menacing and sinister before he finally dies for good.
His personality and ambitions are not fleshed out very much and he doesn't look nearly as menacing as Dark Mind, but he does possess Daroach, and both King Dedede and Meta Knight really wanted him to not be released (even with the powerful Kirby around to fight him, who ends up easily destroying him nonetheless), to the point of Meta Knight fighting Kirby to try to prevent this. And he is also mentioned to be the ''ruler of the underworld''.

Her henchman, Taranza, controls King Dedede like a puppet, and after assuming her OneWingedAngel form, Sectonia plans to suck the life force of everyone in Dream Land ''for all eternity''. * ''VideoGame/MemoriaFreese'': Things were already serious in the ''LightNovel/DateALive'' crossover campaign ''Ais Catastrophe'' [[spoiler: before the false Kaguya Yamai appeared after she turned Ais into an Inverse Spirit but it was only later revealed that she was behind everything that happened so far. Not only does she beat out [[Characters/DateALiveKurumiTokisaki Kurumi]] as the most "evil" Spirit, the humor level drops at the very moment she reveals herself. From there on, the story is dark and horrifying with psychological torment and creepy scenarios. And by a far extension, she's also one of the most vile foes Bell and Shido faced, making her name]] in both worlds of ''Date A Live'' and ''LightNovel/IsItWrongToTryToPickUpGirlsInADungeon''.

** ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheOrigamiKing'' actually has ''two'' Knights.
*** While the previous two games had Bowser possessed by strange artifacts with no known motives, [[BigBad King Olly]] is a no-nonsense villain whose sole presence darkens the scene with his motives of [[spoiler:creating and using the 1,000 Paper Crane technique to make a wish to kill all Toads in existence]] being so utterly and horrendously vile that it gives even ''Bowser'', a Koopa who takes immeasurable pride in being a villain, [[EvenEvilHasStandards some pause]]. He also takes matters into his own hands by [[spoiler:throwing a boulder to trap Olivia in which results in Bobby’s HeroicSacrifice]].
*** [[MasterSwordsman Scissors]] is dead serious in their mission to protect the streamer, and any whose on the sharp side of their blade will be cut to pieces. This is reflected in-game as attacking the blade will ''one-shot'' you. [[DiedStandingUp They also don't say anything when beaten]].

** The true BigBad of ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor'' is the [[EvilSorceress Shadow Queen]]. She's played dead serious with ''no'' comedic elements, which contrasts heavily to many other Mario villains. The moment she is free from her prison, the first things she does is cover the world in darkness and possess Peach's body, forcing the party to fight her. The moment she assumes her true form and exhausts the party is the game's DarkestHour and if not for the Crystal Stars, powered by the wishes of people around the world, being able to debuff the Shadow Queen's invincibility and Peach briefly fighting for control of her body to give the party her remaining power, Mario and his friends would've been killed.

** In ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory'', the [[EdritchAbomination Dark Star]] is treated without any source of humor compared to [[IntentionalEngrishIsFunny Fawful]] and [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Midbus]]. This thing desires nothing short of complete annihilation and its horrifying nature gets worse when showing its sapience as Dark Bowser.
