If you put Amber and friends in the roles stern guardians and Ruby and Jade as Sofia'a girlfriends, the plot would be virtually unchanged. The ending also shows all of them having a bit too much fun hanging around with each other.

* Amber seems somewhat hurt when Hildegard hugs Sofia in "The Princess Stays In The Picture", as she "never hugs me like that."

* In "The Flying Crown", after James sprains his wrist with Hugo taking his place, James wasn't even jealous and seemed okay with Sofia giving Hugo a second chance [[spoiler:(or trying to)]]. After Hugo and Sofia won the Flying Crown, Hugo asked James if he wanted to hold the Crown.
* "Lord of the Rink" shows how loyal James has become to Hugo. When Hugo's friends catch him ice-dancing, James is the most loyal to him, telling the others that Sofia went through the same experience and urging them to be okay with Hugo doing the same. When Hugo's father King Garrick tries going after his son, who left hockey practice to perform in the ice-dancing recital, James asks the rest of the hockey team if they want to see Hugo ice-dancing, and they all go after him. When Sofia asks her to help make sure that only she and her mother spend time, Lucinda asks her not to reveal to her mother that she's secretly a good witch who's friends with her. Replace "good witch" with "in a relationship" and "friend" with "girlfriend", and everything stays virtually the same.

Their subplot in "The Leafsong Festival" has Robin picked for an audition over Mia, and the latter is jealous when the former is bragging about it. If this were written as a story about a strained romantic relationship, very little would have to change. They even have a heartfelt moment at the end.

Despite Hugo's behavior in "Just One of the Princes", James stood up for him after learning of his secret passion for ice-dancing and urged the other boys to be okay with it. *** "The Princess Prodigy" is definitely heavy on this. This episode has Baron Von Rocha purposefully stroking Vivian's ego so that he can get the musical magic from her mandolin. Sofia is the one who shows the most concern for Vivian's behavior, essentially acting like a lover trying to get her partner to act normally. When Vivian drives everyone away, they're both shown to be visibly crushed, and this kickstarts Vivian's realization that she's going too far. Just like at the beginning of the episode, the ending has them partnering up again during the band performance, and looking quite happy with each other.
** Sofia/Lucinda: Sofia was the first person who gave Lucinda a chance. Naturally, she'd be grateful to her.
*** In "The Little Witch", after Sofia starts unlocking Lucinda's good side, they're inseparable. They give each other a loving look near the end.

This episode has Lucinda celebrating her Cauldronation, and asking Sofia to make sure her witch friends, Indigo and Lily, don't fight with each other. The latter two fight with each other to see who's the better friend to join her by her side, and Lucinda eventually settles on Sofia. Replace "friend" with "girlfriend", and it's virtually the same. Heck, Indigo and Lily do get a bit too close to her, and Sofia essentially acts like a worried lover for Lucinda.

*** "Sidekick Clio" is the epitome of this. Hildegard goes away for a few days, with Sofia encouraging Clio to try out for the school play, but she says no. Why? Because it's not what Hildegard wants. When she gets back, her anger at Clio has a ting of jealousy at being snubbed and cheated on. Their tender moment at the end is like two lovers making up.
