Although Vaan has a hard time speaking to him at first, Reks gets to reunite with Basch and Penelo, learning about all of the things Vaan has accomplished. Ashe introduces herself to Reks and takes responsibility for the brothers' circumstances, thanking him for his service, and Reks is honored by it. When Reks and Vaan finally have their talk, Gabranth appears and explains who he is, and despite everything Reks shows him no hostility. Reks learns about Vaan's aspirations to become a sky pirate and asks for a ride on the airship, and Vaan complies -- leading Setzer and the others to bemoan the theft of the airship and muse that Reks may have more in common with his brother than anyone thought, now that he has no responsibilities to protect him by joining the army. Rather than chasing after them, Basch tells the others to let them enjoy this bonding moment together. All of this together serves to characterize Reks more than he got in ''XII,'' fleshing him out more.
