** I think it's a combination of TheyChangedItNowItSucks and questionable writing. People are used to the idea of Samus being a stoic badass, so it's going to hard to convince most people to accept CharacterDevelopment after Samus has been pretty much the same for several years. By my count, the only two bits of media to try and change that perception of Samus were the manga and Other M. I can't say anything about Other M as I haven't played it, but the manga was a narm-filled mess that rarely let Samus do anything genuinely awesome. Plus, Other M is basically building one what the manga delivered, for better or worse. So you have a fanbase that is naturally averse to the idea of Samus changing, and the major attempts to do so have been poorly executed. (For the record, while I hate the manga with a passion, I agree Samus needs fleshing out and can respect Nintendo's attempts to do so.) At this point, I think the best thing to do would be for Nintendo to find a happy medium between the two portrayals by highlighting Samus' credentials as an IronWoobie.

I mean, let's look at her canon backstory, as established in Super Smash Brothers Melee, Metroid Prime, Fusion, Zero Mission, and Brawl shall we? When she was four Ridley and the pirates killed her parents In FRONT OF HER. She was adopted by the Chozo and raised by their Brain-in-a-jar, Which went crazy and joined the pirates and killed the Chozo, leaving Samus an orphan (again). [[ChildSoldiers She joined the military while a teenager]], and met the first person she thought could understand her, a man that needed a daughter the way she needed a parent (at least one that wasn't dead/ a giant brain trying to kill her) and tried to help her get used to her place in society.She, of course, blew him off and set off on her own for a career in bounty hunting, leaving her friend behind.She blew up Mother Brain and Ridley and over several years,Spending time with the marines and navy instead of the army to avoid Adam, getting corupted by phazon, having to be the only survivor of a suicide mission and killing her fellow hunters, she realized that Ridley would keep coming back to life while her parents would be dead forever.Her next mission involved killing all the metroids, until she found an egg and realized [[HeWhoFightsMonsters she had become Ridley]] and, unable to kill the metroid, she brought it to a space colony which, as she was leaving, was attacked with many good men killed just to get the metroid and start the breeding program again.She blew up Ridley again,and the Baby Metroid sacrificed itself to save her, allowing her to kill Mother Brain and leaving her alone,again. Other M, to me, is almost a Deconstruction of the metroid series, showing in the cutscenes and narration how bad Samus' life sucks, (Seriously she's at ButtMonkey levels now)But showing in the gameplay that despite that, she'll still kick Ridley's ass and fight to bring peace to the Galaxy, that despite the HumiliationConga in her personal life, or perhaps because of it,she'll still be in the thick of it, trying to fight for peace.That's the way I see it anyway, sorry for the WallOfText.

Other M, to me, is almost a [[Deconstruction]] of the metroid series, showing in the cutscenes and narration how bad Samus' life sucks, (Seriously she's at ButtMonkey levels now)

** Maybe because she didn't have all those upgrades? She couldn't even use the Plasma Beam, Gravity Suit, Space Jump and Power Bombs until a certain point in Zero Mission and she starts that game with: the Short Beam (that is to say, a Power beam that can travel a couple meters before fizzeling out of existance,) and the Power suit.Now, admittedly, Hunters, Prime 2, Prime 3, and Fusion show missiles to be pretty common tech, (the Super missiles seem to be mostly Chozo until the Federation finally works them out in Fusion, the Ice Missiles were the product of either a corrupted Rundas or late Federation science, the Diffusion Missiles only showed once, and while Fusion did have the Feds finally delivering Bombs and Power Bombs, It's kind of useless without the Morph Ball,No?) but standard missiles hardly makes a difference against most situations.( That and I don't get why you think she was ever standard infantry in the first place, she says she was "Federation Army" but such an organization would be subdivided with many specialties. Adam's unit, for example, seems very much like a "Special Forces" unit with it's small size, and distinct skillsets and personalities.)

** "The best timeline anyone's come up with"? Metroid is unique in Nintendo's stable as having an ''entirely clear'' timeline. There's really nothing ambiguous about it. It flows pretty clearly: Metroid->MetroidPrime series->Metroid II->Super Metroid->Metroid Fusion.

*** Yeah, that was definitely the point. The atmosphere is GREAT, too. I felt like I was playing a videogame version of TheThing during that section.

*** Actually, a mold virus could never effect a jellyfish. Viruses are incredibly specific to the target. You could put some ebola contaminated blood into a fish tank, and exactly nothing would happen to the fish. This is actually quite useful: for certain highly resistant strains of necrotic bacteria, e.g. MRSA one of the only effective curse is to dump heavily virus-laden water over the spot. The catch? The viruses in that water infect, kill, and destroy bacteria. Thing is, between the different Kingdoms of Life(Animal, Plant, Fungi, etc.) There are such massive differences in biological vulnerabilities that any virus that hurts one kingdom would have a very hard time doing another. Of course, bacteria and their viruses are the Most Triumphant Example of this principle, as bacteria evolve in twenty years as high-complexity live evolves in a million years, AND they can copy and paste abilities from other species of bacteria, humans, or really anything with DNA, really. Imagine you ate a pheasant and grew feathers. Bacteria do that. Easily. All the time.

**** As stated several lines earlier, Samus' suit is modular. It can presumably make use of 'most any technology it comes across.

*** In which case, why could Samus use them?

** The Ice Missiles were unique to Rundas, not really Federation tech.

* According to the best timeline anyone's come up with, Fusion is chronologically the last game in the series. This means that Prime 3 must have taken place at least a year or two beforehand. What happened to the design for the Ice Missiles in that time which prevented them from digging them up immediately when the Federation realised Samus couldn't use the Ice Beam?

* Why in the world did they place Samus in a regular infantry unit during her stint in the military? Even in her suit's most rudimentary form she can kill with two shots from the power beam what takes a GF trooper a whole magazine. With all her upgrades, she has, off the top of my head: a sustained running speed that would get her a speeding ticket on any road in the United States, more armor than some nuclear hardened bunkers, more missiles than a B-2 has bombs, not just the ability to fly but also to kill nearly anything she touches instantly while doing so, and an infinite ammo beam weapon capable of melting animals the size of elephants in seconds. She's closer to a main battle tank in terms of capabilities, if a main battle tank could fly. And they put her in...an infantry unit. Not even special forces, where she'd be far too visually distinct for covert ops but at least would have a chance of needing even a fraction of her abilities. This is a person that can take on an entire fortified planet and win, and they stick her in with the grunts. Pearls before swine.
