It struck me as a take on TheAsylum, a major Hollywood studio known for making blatant rip-offs of blockbusters and which the executives are well aware and are even ''delighted'' to be doing what they're doing! But that may not even be the case. If we had seen more of their side, we may have had a more definite answer to Tom's motivations.
