There is no interview with Darren Aronofsky that supports this. Only one with Natalie Portman.

** Did I watch a different movie? I don't recall her saying anything about thinking the cake will make her fat. She says her stomach is in knots--ie, she's too nauseous from excitement to eat. Yeah, it could be an excuse, but it could also be legitimate. And is she shown making herself sick into a toilet, or is she shown stress vomiting, given the context in which she does it? Also--she is absolutely working out much more than usual. She is shown working on her part at the theater long after everyone else has given up and gone home, and even a little in her own private studio. It's possible she's got an eating disorder, but it's also possible she's losing weight because she's a nervous wreck and she's obsessed with getting this part right to the point of neglecting her diet.

** Ballet is an incredibly intense sport that burns hundreds of calories, and dancers have to eat a lot to avoid becoming dangerously underweight. So the fact that Nina thinks she has to avoid the cake because she thinks it'll immediately make her out of shape is a sure sign of an unhealthy relationship with food. Eating a big cake once will bloat you for a little bit through water weight, but once it's digested and the calories burned off there's no harm done. If she's eating a big cake every night and not exercising, then that's a different story.

** Her mother makes her a cake and she says she can't eat any of it. She's afraid that eating cake once will make hr fat. That's definitely signs of an eating disorder.

** Or perhaps they ''were'' there but Nina just imagined herself being alone in the dressing room.

** You can interpret the stabbing of Beth as Nina's inner struggle against the thoughts that she can't do this. Beth represents her own self doubts that she will fail, while Lily represents her fear of being replaced or upstaged. Everyone has that voice in their head that tells them they're going to fail, and because Beth was who Nina was replacing as prima ballerina, Nina imagined her as an opponent that she had to fight. While the scene of Nina stabbing Beth was horrifying, it's actually more empowering than you think - as Nina is fighting back against her self-doubts. Just like where we're lead to believe she killed Lily - she really just confronted her fears of being replaced. Nina stabbing Beth is a crucial point in her CharacterDevelopment - accepting that she ''can'' do this role and will not let herself fail. The act of stabbing her is admitting to herself that she can do it - and if the scene hadn't been there, then Nina probably would have just let Lily do the role on the opening night because she didn't believe she could do it herself.

** Also, the costume lady taking her measurements mentions that she's lost weight. Nina is already (dangerously) rail thin and she's probably not working out that much more than usual.

*** [[spoiler: This is possibly a case of artistic license on Aronofsky's part. While it's well known that adrenalin and shock can be enough to, say, get a fatally wounded runner to the finish line of a race, that runner would be moving pretty clumsily. Nina might have had the raw strength to make it to the stage and keep trying, but coordination is a completely different thing from strength, and a dancer in shock would likely not be able to retain her balance for even a single spin.]]

** The ending is actually pretty clear on what happened. [[spoiler:Nina stabbed herself and imagined the whole thing with stabbing/fighting Lily and turning into a swan. She also imaged the sex scene and the fact that Lily was after her. Nina died at the end of the ballet, that much was very obvious.]] I don't understand why everyone is so confused about the ending, it really was not that hard to get.

* The [[GainaxEnding Ending]]. I don't really care whether [[BolivianArmyEnding Nina died or not]] but I'm particularly disturbed by which scene are real and which are not.

You Imagined It is being cut per TRS.

*** This film was not meant to be a documentary on the business of running a ballet company. It was a [[AcceptableBreaksFromReality dramatic tale]] of a woman losing her mind. And you're worried about whether the film was realistic?
