Then she opens her eyes and is facing towards him, the sadness is noticeable. Shortly after is their kiss, once again done with the eyes closed and happy and fading as soon as the eyes open and she tells him that she recognizes her feelings for Gambit. She most likely went for the kiss as a last ditch effort to try to see if her feelings were any stronger than the dance had already indicated. She was most likely picturing Gambit when her eyes were closed and also desperately trying to convince herself that touch was needed.

** Adding to this it parallels when the group goes to the club in the first episode and she and Gambit look down at the crowd and she expresses her sadness at all of them touching and wishing she could do so while Gambit tells her how anyone would be lucky to touch her. Come this episode in a scene with reasonably similar lighting and finally being able to touch and dance with someone, Rogue realizes that she doesn't want that and what she wanted was the guy she couldn't touch who was with her that night.
