* Frameup: Asaji provides drugged wine to Lord Tsuzuki's guards, steals a spear, and - after Washizu murders him with it - returns the bloody weapon to the guard's hands. Washizu stabs the confused guard as he attempts to wake up, nominally for Revenge but mostly to disguise the bloodstains on his own hands.

* FreakOut: At the grand banquet, Noriyasu begins a noh performance, which opens with a monologue on the evils of ambition and treachery. Barely one sentence in, Washizu screams at the man to stop, casting a stifling pall over the dinner - and calling attention to the recent string of murders, especially the empty seats for Waki and his son, one of whom was murdered on his orders.

%% * HenpeckedHusband: Washizu, possibly even more than Theatre/Macbeth.

%% * HenpeckedHusband: Washizu, possibly even more than Theatre/Macbeth.Theatre/Macbeth. Asaji wheedles him constantly, reminding him of the prophecy and daring him to betray his allegiances before he can be betrayed in turn, then questioning his manhood for not seeking ultimate power. Washizu is clearly torn, but when Asaji steals a guard's weapon and demands he use it, he can't bring himself to rebuke her.

* MobileShrubbery: Soldiers camouflaging themselves as trees, straight from the source material.

* MobileShrubbery: Soldiers camouflaging themselves as trees, straight from the source material. It's to provide cover from arrows, which Washizu had boasted were their best defense.

Added DiffLines:

* RousingSpeech: Subverted in grand fashion. By the final scene, Washizu's morale is beyond shattered, terrified of traitors at every turn and heavily outnumbered, and his only comfort is an oddly specific prophecy from a mad ghost. He attempts to rally his men before battle, but the only things he can think to say are objectively true, but completely meaningless, observations on the situation, as well as admitting to his soldiers that he's destined for victory in battle. It's such a bad speech that his men have openly turned on him by the end.

* DrivenToSuicide: Averted, actually. The last scene with Asaji (Lady Macbeth) is the "out, damned spot" scene, and, unlike in the play, there is no exposition indicating that she has killed herself.
** Miki's wife, however...

herself. Miki's wife, however...

Added DiffLines:

* ForebodingFleeingFlock: The guards remark that a pack of rats have been seen fleeing the castle, at about the turning point where Washizu loses control.

* BloodyHallucinationsOfGuilt: Asaji freaks out over blood only she can see after she manipulates her husband into .
