* InMemoriam: The film is an accidental epitaph in a meta-sense, since the real Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was shuttered during production.

* GirlsWithMoustaches: Keala Settle plays The Bearded Woman, and despite the full beard, she's still manages to be BigBeautifulWoman (with a fantastic singing voice).

* ActorAllusion: This isn't the first time Jackman has played a [[Film/ThePrestige showman]] known for wowing people with things they'd never seen before.

* AdaptationDistillation: Combined with AgeLift, the movie appears to be concerned with showing Barnum creating his and Bailey's famed circus, but Barnum himself didn't get into the circus business proper until he was sixty years old. As well, Barnum's partnership with the [[AlliterativeAppeal shy Swedish soprano]] Jenny Lind has at least some prominence, even though said partnership was much earlier in his life while he was making a name for himself as a proprietor of "oddities" and hoaxes.

* DefrostingIceQueen: Zendaya's character looks to be this when she asks Efron what his act is. When told he doesn't have one, she's skeptical. Other scenes show them much closer, in particular one where Efron looks beat up and in a hospital bed after an as-yet unknown event.

* FairForItsDay: Barnum lived during the 19th century, when women were still expected to be silent and you were shit out of luck if you weren't a [[WhiteAngloSaxonProtestant WASP]], so to advertise and feature people of different skin colors, nationalities, and backgrounds was anathema to the general public of the time, even though today it's commonplace and even expected.
