The movie clearly takes place in the 2010s. Kassi has a smartphone. Tyler's family is just poor.

* AmbiguousTimePeriod: It's not clear whether the story takes place in the modern day of the film's release in 2018 or in the recent past. Tyler has only an old-fashioned flip-phone, and the family has only one family lap top located in the den. Don's obsession with [[spoiler:porno magazines is also fairly outdated]]. These might indicate a PeriodPiece in the recent past, but could also be explained by economic, cultural and practical reasons.

** Midway through the film, Don tells Tyler that Tyler may think of picking something up and whacking his father over the head, but he'd never do it. In the end, [[spoiler:Tyler does not shoot his father, having not even put bullets into the gun, but Kassi ''does'' hit Don over the head with a lamp]].
