* BeautifulDreamer: Played for disturbing effect; on day two of her friendship, Ingrid takes dozens of pictures of her Instagram idol while she's sleeping next to her for no reason but to satisfy her idolatrous love.

Added DiffLines:

* BinocularShot: Keeping in the grand tradition of stalkers, Ingrid wields binoculars to watch a pretty woman from afar without her knowledge, as her ancestors in creep did long ago.

Added DiffLines:

* OrphanOrdeal: Dan was so traumatized by the death of his parents that he started dressing up like Batman and calling himself 'Bruce,' developing into his adulthood obsession with the superhero.

Added DiffLines:

* ActingUnnatural: Ingrid's first attempt to meet her (most recent) online idol in person requires her to nonchalantly open a magazine and start a conversation about it. She knocks over three magazines while trying to grab one and spends a good fifteen-seconds fumbling over the floor trying to put everything back up evenly before walking directly up to her idol, flipping through the magazine without reading at all, and trying to abort the mission by walking out. The magazine she's holding sets off the store's alarms

Added DiffLines:

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: Nicky, who sees right through Ingrid and undermines her relationship with Taylor, is introduced by mocking a Chinese man with caricatures about his eyes. Taylor's husband mutters about racism as he goes to get another drink.

Added DiffLines:

* ImStandingRightHere: A well-dressed woman in the grocery store notices Ingrid and loudly tells the person she's calling that she sees the pathetic stalker who was thrown into an insane asylum. Its unclear if she actually knew that Ingrid could hear her, although the scratches all along her car should giver her a hint.

Added DiffLines:

* YourMakeUpIsRunning: Ingrid's mascara is all over her face when she busts into a wedding and pepper sprays the bride, letting us know that her state is sad while also making her look about a quarter as crazy as she actually is.

* BeneathTheMask: Taylor at first blush is a very hip, popular girl who keeps up with all the trends and is very popular on Instagram, but below the immediate surface is cultured and has a dream to open a bed and breakfast. She doesn't actually read the books she posts about on Instagram (in fact, the name she had for her bed and breakfast came from a book that she claimed was her favorite book, but it was actually her ''husband's'' favorite book, she had never read it). Taylor is also shown to be in deep denial about what a terrible person her brother Nicky is and that her husband is an alcoholic who resents her. * ForgotToPayTheBill: All of the character's spend money quite lavishly without thought, so it was inevitable that one of them would run out of money and get their electricity cut off. What makes this especially is significant is that without power, one can't charge their phone, which can change the plot dramatically in a film about Instagram.
* GrossUpCloseUp: The first time we see Ingrid its just her eyes; her sick, flinching eyes as she desperately looks through the Instragram feed of a girl she's stalking, ignoring the dirty and yellow reality around her to immerse herself in the life of someone she doesn't even know.
* InsistentAppellation: Nicky always calls Ingrid "Olga"."Olga" for no other reason than to be a douche.

* MissingMom: Ingrid's mother died offscreen of a heart attack a few months before the plot kicks off.movie started. Ingrid describes her mother as her best friend and gradually admits that she doesn't know how to cope without her, which explains a lot of her obsessive behavior.
* MistakenForProstitute: If a beautiful young woman waltzed into town and pays thousands of dollars of rent just in cash, you might guess she's an escort too. Unfortunately for Dan, Ingrid got the money from her mother's inheritance.
* NewMediaAreEvil: Ingrid, a depressed and obsessive person, can continue to ignore her psychological problems by using Instagram to learn everything about a woman she admires and employ that information to slowly sneak into every facet of her life. It helps that the Instragram model who Ingrid stalks seems to be less honest than she should be because of her use of social media, in contrast with her techno-illiterate husband.
* NobodyPoops: AvertedTrope; to show a character's dire financial situation, the movie has a post-shit scene where ripped book pages are used in the face of an exhausted supply of toilet paper and money.

* PlotAllergy: Ingrid steals an Instagram model's dog as part of a scheme to become friends with her, but her plan is good enough that no real conflict can come of it. Thankfully, her landlord, Dan, has allergies and hears the dog to provide the scene with some tension and to give reason for the two to further develop their relationship.

He's quite bothered whenever he hears anyone else is making money of their art and doesn't realize for quite a while that he may be projecting his frustrations on them.

It is not Karma Houdini for Nicky as he was abducted, held at gunpoint and in the end hit on the head and left unconscious. It is just that Dan suffers more harshly but Nicky has a pretty unpleasant experience as well.
