With this installment, the ''Friday the 13th'' franchise took a few more crucial steps toward becoming the pop culture institution that we know today. Most famously: it's the installment where Jason ''finally'' dons his iconic hockey mask, using it to conceal his deformed face after losing the burlap sack that he used in the previous film. Less famously: it's the first installment that isn't primarily set at a Summer camp, with Jason venturing away from Camp Crystal Lake[[note]] The second movie was actually mostly set at [[SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute a different Summer camp near the abandoned site of Camp Crystal Lake]], but you get the idea...[[/note]] to menace the people of the surrounding towns. But while it ''did'' establish Jason's most famous look, a few touches of EarlyInstallmentWeirdness do remain in this film. Most notably: Jason wasn't portrayed as an implacable superhuman killing machine quite yet, instead displaying clear human vulnerabilities in a few moments. He even outright ''[[NotSoStoic yells in pain]]'' when one of his would-be victims manages to fight back in one scene.

For its initial theatrical release in 1982, the film was notably filmed in 3-D--a fact that Creator/ParamountPictures heavily played up in its advertising campaign. Hence why home video releases include multiple extended shots of objects flying at the camera, which can seem rather inexplicable when watching in 2-D.

Behind the scenes, filmmaker Steve Miner (who previously stepped up to direct ''Part 2'' to replace his mentor Sean Cunningham) returned to the director's chair--making him the only person to direct more than one ''Friday the 13th'' movie. While he wouldn't return to direct any further installments, he went on to have a respectably prolific career in both film and television, directing films like ''Film/ForeverYoung'' and ''Film/BigBully'' (Creator/RickMoranis' final film role before his retirement) in the following decade. He even directed ''Film/HalloweenH20TwentyYearsLater'' in 1998, also making him the only person to direct installments in more than one of the "Big Three" [[SlasherMovie slasher]] franchises (''Franchise/{{Halloween}}'', ''Franchise/FridayThe13th'', and ''Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet'').

Meanwhile, Frank Mancuso Jr. (son of high-ranking Paramount executive Frank Mancuso Sr.) stepped up his involvement with the series starting with this installment, taking over as producer after serving as an associate producer on the previous installment--leaving him as ''de facto'' franchise overseer for the remainder of his involvement. Writing duties were assumed by first-time screenwriter Carol Watson and Martin Kitrosser, the latter of whom previously served as a script supervisor on the first two installments.

''Part 3'' proved to be yet another box office success for the ''Friday the 13th'' series, further solidifying its status as a reliable low-cost moneymaker for Paramount. Naturally, [[Film/FridayThe13thTheFinalChapter yet another sequel]] followed two years later--but not wishing to push their luck, the studio announced that said sequel would be the last, and marketed it as the franchise's final installment. It didn't stick...

** It's all but stated that Jason (and is stated in the novelization) [[RapeAsDrama raped Chris]] in the past. Jason, would never show interest in rape or sexuality in the future, save [[SexSignalsDeath killing those who engage in it]] and a few [[AscendedMeme Ascended Memes]] about him hating it.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: After being spooked by a door slammed open by the wind, Chili turns away from it and ends up running to Jason, who impales her with a firepoker.
* ImplacableMan: Along with his trademark mask, this film is where Jason began to exhibit this quality: he not only shrugs off a violent snap-hanging that should have broken his neck, but immediately afterwards takes an axe to his head and continues moving forward to try and kill Chris for a good ten seconds before he 'dies'.

** Really, Jason looks his most villainous in this movie; none of the people he killed were anywhere near his home at Camp Crystal Lake, and in fact he deliberately wandered into ''their'' territory to just randomly kill everyone he meets.
