* HollywoodVoodoo: A constant of all the films as this is the foundation for the story's mythology of how Chucky gets his soul in a doll in the first place, but this first film emphasizes it harder than any of the sequels. We are shown the apartments of both Chucky's mentor and Chucky himself as Charles Lee Ray (both are stocked to the gills with HollywoodVoodoo iconography), Chucky's chant is notably longer and more pronounced than in the later films, and [[WhatCouldHaveBeen there was even going to be an artifact originally that enabled Chucky to conduct his soul transfer]]. This "Heart of Damballa" was cut from all known releases, but [[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/chuckychildsplay/images/6/6b/Simonsen.jpg a few stills]] [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/evil/images/2/27/Heart_of_Damballa.jpg exist]].

* ElectrifiedBathtub: This was originally going to be the babysitter's death, but the special effects to make it happen would have been too expensive. The idea stuck around, though, and was eventually used in ''Bride Of Chucky''.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The first film is considerably darker than the sequels (number 2 and 3 would get a lot lighter, where as "Bride" and "Seed" were straight-up HorrorComedies. Curiously, the most recent two (Curse and Cult of Chucky) have got darker again and more in line with the first film in turns of tone).

* DeletedScene: Various, to the point where the original cut of the film ran 3 hours long. Unfortunately the scenes have never been released and have only surfaced through promotional photos and script details. Many rumors have swirled around through the years as to what happened to them including the scenes being accidentally destroyed, Tom Holland owning the original film dailies/workprint with them intact. The only scene that has managed to surface so far is a slightly alternate scene of Charles Lee Ray’s voodoo chant at the beginning of the film.

* DisappearedDad: Andy's father is absent with very little clues to his fate, though it is mentioned at one point that his wife Karen is a widow. As Karen works a crappy retail job, the giant apartment she and Andy live in was almost certainly his, though we never learn the whys or hows (the apartment's contents offer a few clues, though).

** This is the only film with the rule where Chucky must be [[AttackItsWeakPoint shot in the heart]] to kill him. In all the other films in the franchise, he just [[RasputinianDeath got subject to massive amounts of damage and disfigurement before he finally perished]].
** There is an AttemptedRape midway through (when Karen goes to talk to the guy who sold the Chucky doll), which seems rather out of place in the franchise compared to the other movies.

* ArtisticLicenseReligion: The films make references (including in the words to the possession spell) to "Damballa". While he is a real Loa (basically a god) in the Voodoo religion, he isn't some GodOfEvil like the movies imply, but rather the main creator god. Indeed some historians belief he may even be loosely inspired by ''Moses''.
