''Matron'' focuses on a gang of thieves, led by Sid Carter (James) and including his cohorts Ernie Bragg (Bresslaw) and Freddy (Bill Maynard) trying to steal contraceptive pills from the Finisham Maternity Hospital run by the {{Hypochondriac}} Sir Bernard Cutting (Williams). The thieves manage to smuggle in Sid's reluctant son Cyril (Cope) disguised as "Cyrille", a student nurse who shares a room with (and begins to catch feelings for) Nurse Susan Ball (Windsor), who warns Cyrille to look out for [[AllMenArePerverts the horny Dr. Prodd]] (Scott), who prowls after nurses. Naturally Cyrille is planned to be his newest conquest.

Matron and Sister (Jacki Piper) try to keep the patients happy despite all the shenanigans amongst the staff, but have trouble with expecting couple Mr. and Mrs. Tidey (Connor and Sims), who have been waiting for three weeks for the baby to be born. Mrs. Tidey is treating her stay as a holiday and won't stop binge-eating, while her railway worker husband is left forever racing between his trains and the waiting room.

It stars Creator/SidJames, Creator/KennethWilliams, Creator/CharlesHawtrey, Creator/JoanSims, Creator/HattieJacques, Creator/BernardBresslaw, Kenneth Cope, Creator/TerryScott (in his last film in the series), Creator/BarbaraWindsor, and Creator/KennethConnor. Being the fourth ''Film/CarryOn'' that's set in a hospital, it's amazing that none of the critics claimed it was another sequel to ''Film/CarryOnDoctor'', but that might've been because Creator/JimDale wasn't in it.

Instead, the film focuses on a gang of thieves, led by Sid Carter (James) and including his cohorts Ernie Bragg (Bresslaw) and Freddy (Bill Maynard) trying to steal medicine from the Finisham Maternity Hospital run by the {{Hypochondriac}} Sir Bernard Cutting (Williams), the no-nonsense Matron (Jacques), [[AllMenArePerverts the horny Dr. Prodd]] (Scott) and the clueless Dr. Francis Goode (Hawtrey). The thieves manage to smuggle in Sid's son Cyril (Cope) to pose as an student nurse who shares a room with Nurse Susan Ball (Windsor).

There's also expecting couple Mr. and Mrs. Tidey (Connor and Sims), who have been waiting for almost a month for the baby to be born. This has caused the wife to binge-eat.

* MaternityCrisis: Jane Darling the film star has to give birth to triplets on the way to Finisham Maternity Hospital. This wouldn't be a problem, aside from the fact that Dr. Prodd had accidentally been ShotInTheAss with a hypodermic and sedated, leaving Student Nurse Cyrille (not even a real nurse, but a gangster in disguise) to deliver her triplets. Luckily, the birth is a success and makes the front page.

Unfortunately, having it off is slang for sex, which angers Sir Bernard even more.

** Creator/SidJames is appropriately cast as the criminal Sid Carter as James had appeared as crooks many times on the big screen in the 40's and 50's. The set-up is particularly similar to the 1959 film ''Too Many Crooks'', which James had appeared in.
