* Synopsis: It was only when people actually saw John working as a physician that they began to understand: that it wasn’t just about bullets and IEDs and trauma care under fire. That “doctor” actually covered a pretty wide field. And that John was bloody good at covering ground. 5 times Dr. Watson treated others and 1 time he treated himself.

* Recommended by: Time Lord Victorious
* Status: Oneshot, complete
* Crossover with: ''Series/DoctorWho''
* Synopsis: In 2010, Sherlock had been working as a Consulting Detective for five years. The career of Sherlock Holmes didn't come about easily - between the drugs and the...peculiar events of 2005, it was a struggle. All he needed was a starter case, to make his name - something quick, simple. The disappearance of Rose Tyler, for instance.
* Notes: The episode revolves around Sherlock investigating Rose Tyler's disappearance from back in Series 1 of the ''Doctor Who'' revival, while also throwing in his drug troubles as a subplot. Sherlock is very much in-character, with his trials and tribulations adding to the overall story, and it also has a non-canon explanation of how Sherlock and Lestrade first met as a bonus.

** Seconded with all my heart. This is so far the best post-Reichenbach fic out there and fast becoming a fandom classic. The rest of author's works are very much worth a read as well; Immortal Beloved and its sequel (both can be found at the author's profile on AO3) are ''amazing''.

* ''Comments'': This. Yes. Just... this. This 100k+ novel traces John and Sherlock's unexpected romance over the course of two weeks that will change both their lives. It started on the kink meme, and is being reformatted, cleaned up, and posted on LJ and AO3. Read it. Just... read it. If you're a lifelong tennis fan or you don't know a thing about the sport - read it. The sex is blazing and the love story will melt your heart. Draws heavily from the 2004 film ''Wimbledon'', but a unique ''Sherlock'' spin is obvious. (Also, there's a sequel in progress called ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/374186 A Study in Doubles]]''.)

* ''Synopsis'': "Sebastian Moran is a rebel without a cause (literally - pro patria mori is a pile of shite). Jim Moriarty is an evil genius in need of a right hand (not literally - he’s already got one of those in the freezer). It's a relationship meant to be."
* ''Pairings'': Sebastian Moran/Jim Moriarty
* ''Comments'': This fic is incredible from beginning to end; it's definitely worth the time it will take to read it. It gets especially angsty towards the end(so if you don't like that kind of stuff then you might want to find something else) but the author's characterization of Moriarty and Sebastian is, in my opinion, on point. It's amazing, and in my opinion one of the best things the author has written.

* ''Synopsis'': John Watson was seven years and three months old when he first met His Raggedy Detective. He wasn’t expecting the bright red telephone box to crash land in his back garden in the middle of the night, but then, who ever expected such a silly thing to happen in the first place?
* ''Comments'': Some great Wholock from a great author. While this is very obviously The Eleventh Hour in disguise, Sherlock - whoops, I mean The Detective - and John do put their own spin on things. There are two other fics in this series, both of which strike out on their own paths and are the better for it. Either way, if you've got a bit of a Wholock craving, this should scratch that itch for a bit. (Do be warned, though, that there is some light Johnlock shipping in the third fic, and that no Doctor Who characters actually make an appearance. The Doctor is mentioned, but doesn't meet up with the Detective and John.)

* ''Synopsis'': ''"Did you feel it?" "Feel what?" "Me stabbing you with an extendible pencil in the neck."''
* ''Comments'': A fascinating spin on the old "kissing for a case" trope; the case is quite intelligent considering the word count (1 000-odd), and characterisation is very good - especially where Sherlock is concerned.

* ''Synopsis:'' "We’re looking for him.” John pointed up the stairs to the portrait hanging proudly against the wall. It was blackened and torn in places, but two faces, one of a pretty woman and one of a dark haired boy remained unmarred, staring blankly out into the night.
The boy’s eyebrows knitted together. “A royal?”
Lestrade huffed. “The lost duke, yes. Haven’t you heard of him?”

* Synopsis: An AU four part series covering the events of season two with a twist: John has had the knack for as long as he could remember. It wasn’t that he could become invisible, exactly. The laws of physics worked quite well in his vicinity, thank you very much. It was just that people tended … not to see him.
* Comments: Sticks very close to the events of season two while managing to weave in its own premise in interesting ways. Sweet and comfortable in its style but with a well-explored Sci-Fi element and some fun action. Gives John a lot more power, both in terms of story and in terms of the balance of Sherlock and John's friendship.

* Comments: My favorite writer for this fandom, this author has a talent for natural characterization. Many of her stories are slightly AU, and most of them are John-centric. The ones that are both tend to focus on how he reacts to canon situations given various alternate backgrounds (which seem to spawn AUs of themselves, particularly her Heritage series in which John is a descendant of an earl). Some humor, some drama, and a few character studies, with stories varying between a few thousand words for the early stories and oneshots and 20-30k for the later serieses. Not much in the way of romance. For a good idea of her writing style, start with "Study in Mycroft," "Study in Lestrade," "Study in Sherlock," "Study in John," four points of view on the first episode, "Brave," set between TRF and Season 3, and "That Would Work," one of the earlier stories in which John has an interesting background.
