* TastesLikeFeet: Kio's carrot stew. Klonoa notes that he thinks it tastes pretty strange the first time he eats it, to the point it gives him a general distaste for carrots later on. Huepow notes his stew is more like 'raw, dried out carrots with damp water' and calls it a disgrace. Then later, Tikosu comments on how the carrot stew tastes raw, soggy, and not being thick enough.

* TastesLikeFeet: When Klonoa tries Kio's carrot stew for the first time, he notes that it tastes pretty strange. The author plans for there to be a RunningGag regarding his cooking.

* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: In the first arc, Kio is constantly teasing Klonoa due to him worrying about Lolo a lot. Klonoa tries to deny it every time, claiming she's just a really good friend he cares for. Given it's been years since he last saw her and never knew what happened since, it's a valid point in almost everyone's eyes except for Kio. Eventually Klonoa avoids the discussion with him altogether. [[spoiler:But of course, after coming back to Lunatea, reuniting with Lolo and traveling through the land with her to stop the Prince of Sorrow, he realises that deep down he ''does'' have romantic feelings for her.]]

* TheCameo: Inbetween the first two arcs, Klonoa manages to end up in an underground cave system where he runs into a frightened Taizo Hori, claiming to also go by the name VideoGame/DigDug. The two try to make their way out of the cave.

*** Diglo [[labelnote:*]]who originally didn't have screentime in Dream Champ Tournament and who was a bodyguard for the Moon Ruins in Klonoa Heroes [[/labelnote]] is now a hotheaded gorilla nicknamed 'The Gorrila Thug', originating from Teswood Jungle, the deeper edge of Forlock. He was paid to try and retrieve the 'rare treasure' handed over to the winner.
*** Anemon [[labelnote:*]]who originally had no screentime or dialogue at all [[/labelnote]] is a royal-blooded, snooty and ill-mannered cat nicknamed 'The Princess of Ja'eel', originating from the Ja'eel desert. She's entered the tournament to try and win the treasure by herself and make her father, King Adivael, proud.
*** Zweegle [[labelnote:*]]who originally was an anaemic and kicked the bucket offscreen [[/labelnote]] is now a goblin creature who has unknown origins within Phantomile, nicknamed 'The Count'. [[spoiler: He's been bitten by a bat hundreds of years ago, and turned into what the people called 'a heretic vampire'. Soon after, he went crazy and burned down his home town, killing everyone in the village and feasting on their blood, including his own childhood friends and family. Since then he's been roaming the world for hundreds of years just searching for more blood to devour. Finally ending up in the tournament, claimed by Zweegle himself 'to have found paradise, full of the strongest fighters with the richest blood there ever could be']]
*** Gomeroth [[labelnote:*]]who originally was the second opponent Klonoa faced in Dream Champ Tournament [[/labelnote]] is nicknamed 'The Fishing Frog'. Despite not revealing his main motivation on joining the tournament and only claiming to have come all the way from the seas, he seems very dead-set on winning after being looked down upon by Klonoa and Huepow. Which quickly explains how he got so far up to this point.
*** Suiryu [[labelnote:*]]who originally was an undercover cop in Dream Champ Tournament and the third opponent Klonoa faced [[/labelnote]] is now an ancient dragon who's lived for hundreds of years in Jugpot, having hidden his true powers and living among the kingdom as a respectful and regular-classed Soldier, nicknamed 'The Water Dragon' in the tournament. The reason he's so set on making it to the final match is for the thrill of fighting a very strong opponent, but after being outbeat by Klonoa, he is satisfied. Only he knows something about Clawford's true identity, and reveals it to Klonoa after the battle.

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: While Klonoa is telling about his story to Lolo and Popka since he left Lunatea, all Popka eventually makes a comment about is how his clothes magically changed. [[labelnote:*]]Despite this not being the main point at all, Popka is still asking a pretty understandable question [[PlotHole as this was never explained in the main games either.]] [[/labelnote]]

* BloodierAndGorier: Most of the violence depicted here is more graphic compared to what the games would normally show, with characters shooting others in the head, certain attacks leaving behind bloodied holes in their victims.

* TimeSkip: Due to the first half being a follow-up to Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil, everyone has grown noticably older (especially in Phantomile) from the time that has passed since both stories. Klonoa, Huepow, Lolo and Lephise are all teens now. Even Karal is shown to have grown from a tiny fish to a larger one, while Leorina is almost a young adult.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: In the first half of the story, the Prince of Sorrow is described to be physically and mentally like a sweet and sensitive teenager... While he's technically three years old.

* PostVictoryCollapse: Barely able to knock down Zweegle with everything he got, Klonoa stopped Zweegle from progressing further in the tournament and make more victims. Klonoa then victoriously yells, and shortly after, collapses to the ground from blood loss while he musters to himself ''"At least... I saved the tournament..."''

*** Zweegle [[labelnote:*]]who originally was an anemic and kicked the bucket offscreen [[/labelnote]] is now a psychopathic goblin who has unknown origins within Phantomile, nicknamed 'The Count'. ** Kio, a Breezegale "cabbit" who's revealed to be one of the Phantomilian prisoners Klonoa saved in ''Door to Phantomile''. Here, he accompanies Klonoa during his return to Phantomile, and later hosts his own radio station.
** Tikosu, revealed to be one of Forlock Forest's unnamed guards from ''Door to Phantomile'', and who later opens a traveling food tent.

** Most characters from Dream Champ Tournament are reimagined to be contestants of the Annual Champ Tournament that Klonoa faces.

* IJustWantToBeNormal: After having a nightmare regarding his separation from Lolo, Klonoa tearfully admits that he tried to convince himself that he lives off better like this, but cannot hold it in anymore. He doesn't want to be a dream traveler, if it means if it always means leaving behind those he cares for, unsure of whether or not they're suffering from his absence. His determination to defeat the ultimate nightmare in the hopes of being able to change his fate is eventually what helps him master his KiManipulation abilities.

The first half or so sees Klonoa returning to Phantomile 7 years after the events of ''Door to Phantomile'', and 3 years after the events of ''Lunatea's Veil''. With the help of a "cabbit" named Kio, he sets out to find out why he's been called back after all this time - eventually working towards defeating the ultimate nightmare and freeing himself of his title as the dream traveler.

The other half picks up 15 years later, following Klonoa Jr and Lolo Jr as the former sets out to become a true hero alongside Guntz and Pango, and the latter sets out to become a full priestess. This part of the story adapts the [[NoExportForYou Japan-exclusive]] UsefulNotes/GameBoyAdvance game ''VideoGame/KlonoaHeroesDensetsuNoStarMedal''.

* AbandonShip: Klonoa Jr, Guntz, and Pango do this when their rocket is targeted by the Lunar Base's defense system. Since said rocket doesn't have any escape pods or spacesuits, this means the trio has to ''leap out into the vacuum of space unprotected''. [[BatmanCanBreatheInSpace They survive.]]
* AbusiveParents: Pistoro, when he takes Guntz in after the latter's father died.
* AdaptationalBadass: Balue is revealed to have been a great fighter many years back, and can still bulk up for a good fight when the time comes for it. He's also a more competent trainer to Klonoa and his son than his ''Klonoa Heroes'' counterpart was to Klonoa.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Guntz's {{Jerkass}} tendencies are [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] here compared to his portrayal in ''Klonoa Heroes'', as is Klonoa Jr's short-tempered nature compared to ''Heroes'' Klonoa - probably so the reader can sympathize with them more easily.
* AdaptationalVillainy: {{Downplayed|Trope}} in Butz's case, as he was forced by the BrainwashedAndCrazy Prince of Sorrow to hunt down and kill Klonoa. Otherwise everyone from the Shinigami Gang would've been killed right on the spot if he didn't comply, including himself... and even his own two year old son, Guntz.
* AdaptedOut: Several elements from the ''Klonoa Heroes'' game are left out of this fanfiction, and plot points revolving around them are handled in different ways:
** Lolo Jr has none of the clumsiness that her mother had, and thus has no reason to fall into the Sky Temple's waterway and be fished out by Joka. So, the latter instead ''sets the Sky Temple on fire'' and kidnaps Lolo Jr during the chaos.
** Because this fanfiction connects the stories of the main ''Klonoa'' universe and the ''Klonoa Heroes'' universe, any mention of Nahatomb being a former hero is nonexistent. As a result:
*** Instead of Garlen using Lolo's prayers to concentrate the world's nightmares to awaken said "hero" and claim his Star Medal, he instead plans on using Lolo Jr as a sacrifice to awaken the original Nahatomb from ''Door to Phantomile''... the one that just wanted to destroy the world.
*** Klonoa's poison-induced NightmareSequence, where he can't figure out why he wanted to be a hero in the first place, is replaced with an AfterlifeAntechamber where Klonoa Jr has a short talk with Grandpa.
*** The Radiant Flower is no longer used to cure Boris' sleeping sickness or wake up a comatose Lolo. Instead, the flower protects Lolo Jr after she was sacrificed to Nahatomb, and the sleeping sickness is cured by Pango shutting off a machine on the Lunar Base which produced the nightmare mist.

** The adult Klonoa would always tell his son stories about a "dream traveler" who saved many worlds in his lifetime... eventually giving up the position to be with the ones he loves. It's not until Klonoa Jr encounters Joka at the Sky Temple when he learns that the dream traveler from these stories is Klonoa himself.
* AndThisIsFor: After Janga poisons Klonoa Jr, Guntz yells out a few of these as he shoots the former in retaliation.

* AstralFinale: The last stretch of both arcs take place outside of the heroes' home world (an uninhabited planet for the Tenebrae Hue fight, and the moon for the last fights against Janga, Joka, Garlen, and Nahatomb).
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: Applies to presumably everyone who has to venture out into the stars, including Klonoa and his son. Though the latter meets several astronauts on the moon who ''do'' have to wear spacesuits. Plus, Guntz initially panics over the thought of being exposed to the vacuum of space during the AbandonShip sequence above... before he realizes this trope applies to him as well.
* BloodierAndGorier: Most of the violence depicted here is more graphic compared to what the games would normally show, with characters shooting others in the head, certain attacks leaving behind bloodied holes in their victims... hell, even [[CatsAreMean Janga]] now ''stabs his victims' bodies through'' with his [[PoisonousPerson poison claws]], instead of just scratching them.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: Even though Klonoa can easily beat Balue in a fight by the time he's returned from Lunatea, he still asks the latter for help improving his technique in the hopes of being more prepared for Tenebrae Hue's invasion.
* TheCameo: Inbetween the first two arcs, Klonoa manages to end up in an underground cave system where he runs into a frightened Taizo Hori, claiming to also go by the name VideoGame/DigDug. The two make their way out of the cave. Later on he ends up with Lolo in Dream Land from the VideoGame/{{Kirby}} series, where he meets the young Adeleine from ''VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards'' and the titular pink ball, as they start having a chat... with Klonoa acknowledging how Kirby seems really strong, hoping he could meet them sometime after everything is over.
** During Klonoa Jr's journey, he runs into Adeleine and later on starts to get into a relationship with her. He also briefly fights alongside Susumu Hori[[note]]who was the focus of a side quest in ''Klonoa Heroes''[[/note]] from ''VideoGame/MrDriller''. Lolo Jr eventually starts dating the latter.
** VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog also appears in a flashback, as an opponent Klonoa has faced previously.

* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: During the ''Klonoa Heroes'' arc when compared to the UsefulNotes/GameBoyAdvance game:
** In the game, [[MonsterClown Joka]] is killed by the heroes at Volk City. [[spoiler:Here, his presence at Volk [[ActuallyADoombot turned out to be just a second clone]], and he's finally KilledOffForReal at the Lunar Base.]]
** While Garlen was absorbed by Nahatomb in the game, [[spoiler:he's killed by the heroes here for ordering the hit on Guntz's father, and for [[DirtyOldMan perving out on Lolo Jr.]]]]
** Speaking of Nahatomb, the game had him killed by the heroes and everyone who was trapped in nightmares, as they sent all of their positive dreams to overwhelm him. [[spoiler:Because the nightmare element was AdaptedOut, he instead dies by losing a BeamOWar to Klonoa Jr.]]
* DirtyOldMan:
** Balue, upon seeing the 15-year-old Lolo, develops an attraction to her, with Lolo abruptly shrieking and slapping Balue unconscious out of defense. This continues into her adulthood. Despite the fact that the two never really interact together, he continues to ask Klonoa and his son for pictures of her in underwear, swimwear, etc.
** Garlen seems to exhibit this when trying to convince Lolo Jr to cooperate with him, as he says it's been lonely at the Lunar Base without his men... even going so far as to ''lick her face''. The heroes, who were watching on a surveillance monitor, are appropriately [[{{Squick}} squicked out]].
* DivineIntervention: After beating Tenebrae Hue on an unstable planet, Klonoa and Lolo are almost killed by the planet's explosion... but are saved at the last second by ''the Goddess Claire herself.''
* EarthShatteringKaBoom: One of Tenebrae Hue's attacks causes a drawn-out version of this during his fight with Klonoa and co.
** During Klonoa and Kirby's fight, the energy they exude causes them to ''blow up the latter's home planet''. It reforms after some time, though.

* GoldenSuperMode: [[spoiler: Both Klonoa and his son can enter this when enraged enough. The former even fought VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog to see what the latter's own SuperMode was like.]]
* GravitySucks: After beating Nahatomb in Lunatea's orbit, Klonoa Jr passes out from exhaustion, and Guntz has to stop him from falling... towards the ''moon's'' surface.
** This also occurs after Klonoa knocks out Sonic the Hedgehog in Mobius' orbit, with the former stopping the latter from falling.

* ImposedHandicapTraining: To help strengthen himself, Klonoa Jr's clothes, aside from his scarf, are weighted down so much that Guntz can barely pick up ''just his shirt''.
* ItsPersonal: If you ever go through with kidnapping Lolo Jr, expect her brother to hunt you down to the ends of the universe to get her back.
** Joka still holds a grudge against Klonoa for humiliating him in front of Ghadius... so much so that when they confront each other at Jugpot, Joka demands that with the huge group of friends he gathered, only Klonoa will fight him. [[spoiler:He still beats Joka.]]
*** This grudge seems to extend to Klonoa's family as well, as while Joka says any priestess will work as a sacrifice for Nahatomb, he specifically targets Lolo Jr, as [[UncannyFamilyResemblance her appearance reminds him of the now-adult Lolo, Klonoa's love interest-turned-wife]].
*** During their encounter at the Sky Temple, Klonoa Jr takes advantage of this grudge to provoke Joka into fighting him instead of escaping, and wring some useful information out of the MonsterClown.
* ItsPersonalWithTheDragon: Klonoa's grudge against Joka for [[YouKilledMyFather killing his grandfather]] is more pronounced here than it was in ''Door to Phantomile''. [[spoiler:So much so that when he kills Joka once again, he scream-cries in relief that his grandfather has finally been avenged properly.]]
* KiManipulation: Known as "Fighting Spirit" here, one's ability to use it is awoken by a strong will to fight for something. While Klonoa, Balue, and Sorrow were able to awaken this ability on their own, the High Priestess trains them - along with Huepow, Kio, Clawford, and Popka - to master and enhance it.
* LiteralDisarming: During his fight with Janga, Klonoa Jr manages to break the claws off the former's left hand. Unfortunately, he's then stabbed by the claws on Janga's ''right'' hand...

** Klonoa Jr and Lolo Jr usually just call themselves Klonoa and Lolo, respectively, in casual conversation. Same goes with their close friends.

** Klonoa and Lolo's children, Klonoa Jr and Lolo Jr; based on Klonoa and Lolo from ''Klonoa Heroes''.
** Clawford, a soldier from Jugpot who comes from a long line of fighters, [[spoiler:and whose death at the hands of Tenebrae Hue helps awaken Klonoa's GoldenSuperMode]].
** Harlequeen, a female MonsterClown who seems to be from the same species as Joka.

* PleaseDontLeaveMe: A 10-year-old Guntz tearfully says this verbatim to his father, who was about to die from Janga's poison. The present-day Guntz does the same to Klonoa Jr as the latter falls unconscious from the same poison.

* ShedArmorGainSpeed: A variant, as Klonoa Jr removes his weighted shirt, hat, and gloves, throwing them to Pango so he can more quickly climb the pillar leading to the Sky Temple. As a result, Pango has to climb with the extra weight by himself.

* TournamentArc: The Dream Arena chapters, referred to as the Annual Champ Tournament in the story. Also, Klonoa Jr has a dream during his first night with Guntz that seems to resemble the events of ''Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament''.
* TimeSkip: Due to the first half being a follow-up to Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil, everyone has grown noticably older (especially in Phantomile) from the time that has passed since both stories. Klonoa, Huepow, Lolo and Lephise are all teens now. Even Karal is shown to have grown from a tiny fish to a larger one, while Leorina is almost a young adult. * UncannyFamilyResemblance: Klonoa Jr and Lolo Jr seem to almost exactly resemble their parents as they appeared in ''Lunatea's Veil'', with a few changes to their attire. Several other characters even mistake Klonoa Jr for his father, and it's [[EnforcedTrope enforced]] in Lolo Jr's case, as while Joka could've kidnapped any priestess, he specifically chose her due to her resemblance to the now-adult Lolo.
* WeCanRebuildHim: A variation of this. [[spoiler:After the BrainwashedAndCrazy Prince of Sorrow almost kills Leorina, her dying body's taken back to Volk City by Tat and she manages to keep her alive with with artificial implants. Later on, Leorina herself installs cybernetic enhancements into her body (including a switchable machine gun arm) due to the easy possibility of it.]]
