* GreatOffscreenWar: Exactly what happened in this AU is unknown, but it ties into the barely fleshed lore surrounding the Regis; namely, how humans sealed them away because they feared them. Somehow, this leads into how the Ancestor, the CoveredInScars Gardevoir who founded Astra's village, fled humans after being betrayed by one that she loved, taking all members of her species with her, and warded the village with Psychic defenses that only Dark-type Pokémon could penetrate. And it seems that since then, the Ralts line has otherwise disappeared from Hoenn.

* SuddenlyBilingual: The night before Astra leaves, she touches the Ancestor's stone of power (implied to be Gardevoirite) and sees a flash of her memories meeting the human she would love for the first time. The next day, she is inexplicably capable of reading human words.

* EntertaininglyWrong: Twice at the end of Chapter 18. First crosses with DramaticIrony, wherein Astra and May dismiss Team Aqua as a potential threat. The second is invoked, as they launch into crazy conspiracy theories about the important papers that the Devon worker was carrying.

** Near the end of Chapter 24, the trio is watching a show that appears to be a version of ''Manga/OnePiece'' with an [[VideoGame/{{Splatoon}} Inkling]] as a prominent character. May also mentions that her favorite variation is one that involves [[Fanfic/ThisBites a guy with a talking snail]].

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In this story, May is very foul mouthed and aggressive on the surface, but insists on sharing a hotel room with Astra upon learning she was planning to sleep outside rather than getting a hotel room despite having only just met her.

* ShoutOut: When Astra, Brendan, and May get sushi in Chapter 15 and Brendan orders Corphish, May's response is thus:

* CoverBlowingSuperpower: Astra's PsychicPowers, including telekinesis and telepathy, are potentially this. She pretends to give her Pokémon orders through violin playing while secretly using telepathy.

* SecretSecretKeeper: Professor Birch doesn't know that Astra is really a Pokémon, but he does realize after she leaves that she only speaks through {{Telepathy}}. It's also heavily implied that Steven Stone also sees through it immediately.

The plot is an AU of Pokemon Emerald, where the Ralts that would be captured by [[FriendlyRivalry Wally]] dodges the Pokeball and flees instead. She then finds the discarded Pokeball and eventually decides to disguise herself and become a pokemon trainer, receiving the name 'Astra' as she does so.

* CurbStompBattle: Astra's first battle against May in Petalburg: with no grasp of the disadvantage that Grass has against Fire, May's Torchic beats Astra's Treecko with just two attacks.

* SecretSecretKeeper: Professor Birch doesn't know that Astra is really a Pokémon, but he does realize after she leaves that she only speaks through {{Telepathy}}.

* HatesBeingAlone: Due to her father forcing their family to move around a lot May has subtly shown some issues with being separated from her current friends. An example being her getting visibly agitated when Brendan stays behind at Petalburg instead of traveling with her and Astra.

* NiceGuy: Brendan is the first human that Astra becomes friends with and is one of the most friendliest and supportive members of the cast.
* NoNeedForNames: All of the inhabitants of the Pokémon village think this, due to the fact that they can simply identify each other with their Psychic Powers.

* PokemonSpeak: As Astra is a Ralts, she can only vocalize combinations of syllables in the word 'Ralts'. Luckily her telepathy lets her bypass this.

* AdaptationalRelationshipChange: Norman seems to care far more about battling than about his family: he didn't stop moving between regions every other year when he married or when he had a daughter, and when he finally retired from traveling, he moved one last time, to Hoenn, and while his family settled in Littleroot Town, he basically lives in the Petalburg Gym he took over. Thus, May is not fond of him.

* DefeatMeansFriendship: An unusually aggressive and strong Nincanda unexpectedly showed submission and an eagerness to join Astra's party after she defeated him in Chapter 22.

* FishOutOfWater: Astra's village's knowledge of humans comes largely from stories and occasional spy work. Astra didn't even know about timekeeping or money before she left, but she picks things up quickly.
* ForWantOfANail: The actual "nail" hasn't been identified yet, although it has been hinted at.

* MasterOfIllusion: Astra uses illusions to hide her non-human features. She also makes herself appear shorter to hide the sudden growth spurt from her evolution.
