* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Morals and actions mean nothing to Izuru, only whether or not they result in unpredictability. * AfterTheEnd: When Chiaki wakes up, the world's already ended, making the task of recovering even harder on her since nothing is familiar anymore.

* BrutalHonesty: Izuru speaks in a very straightforward and blunt manner.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Miaya is odd even for an Ultimate, as she only talks through her rabbit avatar Usami, but she’s also very competent at her job and is a kind and reasonable woman.

* TheChessmaster: Izuru, and how. * HeroicSelfDeprecation: Chiaki’s self-esteem is pretty much destroyed by the events of ''Side:Despair'' Episode 10; once she remembers the full details of what happened, she rips herself apart for having [[LeeroyJenkins such poor wisdom]]. Even after she gets through her depression, she tends to put herself down and doubt her own judgment.

* LackOfEmpathy: Izuru is incredibly callous to anyone not named Chiaki. It’s most explicit when watching the Killing Game — while she’s horrified and saddened by what Class 78 goes through, he remarks on it being boring several times and only wants to be entertained.

* LonelyRichKid: Chiaki’s backstory. Her parents showered her with money and video games in lieu of actual affection, and she had no friends before entering Hope’s Peak — the other kids mistook her shyness for being stuck-up and thought she was weird for loving video games so much.

* RidiculousFutureInflation: Not as extreme as some examples, but Chiaki is shocked to find that prices for basic groceries have doubled as a side-effect of The Tragedy.

* SecretlySelfish: While Chiaki is a genuinely sweet person, she’s also starved for attention and greedy for friendship, to the point she’d rather Class 77 and Chisa continue terrorizing the world than get caught by the Future Foundation.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Her ordeal in the maze left Chiaki with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experiencing nightmares of her torture, being triggered by reminders (such as elevators), and subconsciously associating [[spoiler:Kanon]] with Junko because of her makeup.

''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/8222090/chapters/18843971 Extra Life]]'' by TheApocryphalOne is a ''Franchise/DanganRonpa'' fanfic, set with the goal of [[FixFic saving Chiaki from her execution]] in ''DanganRonpa3''--but rather than going full-on [=AU=], it keeps in line with canon, [[AnotherSideAnotherStory with Chiaki being an off-screen witness to those events]].

The fic begins immediately after the SmashToBlack in ''Side:Despair Episode'' 10. Izuru, moved by emotion, decides to resuscitate Chiaki and hide her from Junko. From there, it chronicles her recovery, CharacterDevelopment, and reaction to the events around her, such as TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.

It can also be found on fanfiction.net [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12178638/1/Extra-Life here]].

----
!!Tropes in ''Extra Life'' include:
* AfterActionHealingDrama: The opening scene of the fic. Izuru [[SherlockScan deduces the severity of Chiaki’s injuries in seconds]] and rushes to pull her back from the brink of death. It takes him several hours before he’s satisfied she isn’t in immediate peril, and only then does he stop to contemplate just why he wanted to save her.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Amped up from canon when even Izuru notes he isn’t sure whether he’s entirely human anymore.
* {{Archenemy}}: Despite his initial allegiance with her, Izuru holds Junko in high distate. While he initially tolerates her for the chance to feel something beyond boredom, her framing him, trying to kill Chiaki, and then failing to impress him with despair all steadily erodes that tolerance...and then she seals his loathing by interfering with the [[VisualNovel/DanganRonpa second killing game]], since it makes hope winning a ForegoneConclusion, not something earned. * TheAtoner: Chiaki [[spoiler:joins the Future Foundation]] hoping to help make things right, after her part in contributing to the world’s destruction.
* BeneathNotice: [[spoiler:Eventually, Chiaki expresses a desire to join the Future Foundation to atone. The problem? She’s assumed dead, and revealing herself to have been saved by a Remnant of Despair would likely get her arrested, not to mention [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Chisa]] is still there. So Izuru creates a fake identity and she enters as not the Ultimate Gamer, but an intern.]]
* BerserkButton: Junko is Izuru’s, for [[TranquilFury as close to berserk]] as [[TheStoic he]] gets. The first time Chiaki hears the slightest bit of anger from him is when she asks if he’s still working for her.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Morals and actions mean nothing to Izuru, only whether or not they result in unpredictability. He sees no problem with Byakuya tampering with Chihiro’s corpse because it was an attempt to make things interesting, but gets incensed when Junko frames Makoto because it makes the outcome of the killing game a ForegoneConclusion. He’s baffled by anything he sees as illogical, is confused by the emotions Chiaki stirs in him, and sees no reason to unnecessarily hurt nor help people. His alien mentality is a source of friction for them, but she eventually decides that even if she can’t understand his ways of thinking, she still cares about and accepts him.
* BreakTheCutie: '''Chiaki.''' The author states the price for her survival was a boatload of emotional trauma, and it shows. From being left unable to even walk for months, to learning the truth of what happened to Hajime and her friends, to dealing with her guilt and self-loathing for her role in the world’s end, to [[spoiler:finding a SecondLove and then losing him too]], she has no shortage of misery.
* TheBusCameBack: Kanon, whose fate was left ambiguous after the events of ''VideoGame/AbsoluteDespairGirls'', makes a return later in the fic. The other Captives are also mentioned as being rescued, but do not actually appear.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:Izuru departs to begin enacting the events of ''VisualNovel/SuperDanganRonpa2'' at the end of Chapter 18.]]
* CallBack: Chiaki’s [[spoiler:final farewell to Izuru]] in Chapter 18 is written deliberately to parallel [[spoiler:her farewell to Hajime in Episode 3]].
* TheCameo: [[VisualNovel/DanganRonpaZero Ryouko Otonashi and Yasuke Matsuda]] make a brief one at the end of Chapter 2.
* CannotSpitItOut: Her narration reveals Chiaki was in love with Hajime, but too afraid of rejection to tell him; she later wonders whether anything would have changed if she had. [[spoiler:In Chapter 18 she resolves not to repeat the mistake with Izuru.]]
* TheChessmaster: Izuru, and how. He anonymously funds the Future Foundation so they can keep working on the Neo World Program and put up a good fight against Ultimate Despair; [[spoiler:enacts a MemoryGambit with Chiaki in case his plan goes wrong]]; and eventually plays the Remnants and the Future Foundation like fiddles to get himself and Class 77 into the Neo World Program.
* ChekhovsSkill: Being an avid player of many video games has given Chiaki some useful skills. She deciphers Sayaka’s dying message because the Unown alphabet in ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' is strongly related to English, and has excellent sharpshooting skills from shooters.
* CoveredInScars: The traps in the maze have left Chiaki’s arms and legs criss-crossed with scars.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Though the fic is primarily about Chiaki, Izuru gets several chapters from his perspective and has his own character arc about coming to terms with emotions.
* DidDoTheResearch: The medical procedure in the first chapter was researched extensively and is greatly detailed to show it. Similarly, the therapy Chiaki goes through [[spoiler:and later learns]] sticks to real methods, and her PTSD was also researched to be accurate and respectful.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Junko’s genuine feelings Yasuke are brought up. Instead of humanizing her, though, it [[KickTheMoralityPet exacerbates how awful she is]].
* FixFic: The entire fic was written to save Chiaki from her execution. It also in fills vague canon details or wraps up dangling plot threads, offers some {{Worldbuilding}} about the time of the Tragedy, explains the Neo World Program's construction, gives screentime to underused characters like Miaya, and resolves what happens to the Towa City captives.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: Chiaki falls for Izuru during her year of being nursed back to health by him.
* ForegoneConclusion:
** Since it sticks with canon, some things are inevitable, namely that Izuru is going to leave to enact the events of [[VisualNovel/SuperDanganRonpa2 the second game]] no matter what Chiaki says or does.
** Miaya is [[spoiler:going to be dead]] by the time of ''Anime/DanganRonpa3''.
** InUniverse, Izuru considers the outcome of the first killing game to have been this the moment Junko tried to frame Makoto for Mukuro’s murder. Once she’d broken her own rules, it was only a matter of time before the students found out and used that to force her into the open.
* GambitPileup: Junko and Izuru are both manipulating each other for the Neo World Program plan; Junko uses Izuru to get her AI in so she can [[BrainUploading upload her personality]] in the event of her death, while he goes along with it to test whether hope can beat despair. For that purpose, he anonymously backs the Future Foundation so they don't get destroyed before the program is finished, plans to exploit Makoto's kindness to get himself and Class 77 placed in the program, and makes the time to [[spoiler:toss a MemoryGambit in there just in case the worst scenario comes to pass]].
* TheHeart: Miaya always takes the time to listen to ''all'' her employee’s concerns.
* HeroicBSOD: Remembering her role in her beloved classmates’ brainwashing horrifies Chiaki and makes her fall into a depression. It’s so severe she even [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness breaks one of her consoles]].
* IWillWaitForYou: Again, [[spoiler:Chiaki is willing to wait a long period for the man she loves]]. It’s slightly easier on her this time, as [[spoiler:he actually tells her he’s leaving beforehand, and she has her work with the Future Foundation to keep her occupied]].
* InnerMonologue: Used for insight. Both Chiaki and Izuru are prone to inwardly musing on what happens around them and on each other, [[TheStoic Izuru moreso]]. In fact, the first chapter has no dialogue at all, but is entirely Izuru analyzing why he saved Chiaki.
* IsThisWhatAngerFeelsLike: When he encounters Junko for the first time after saving Chiaki, Izuru needs a few moments to recognize what he's feeling as pure fury.
* KickTheMoralityPet: Discussed. Junko claims that hurting and killing those you love brings the greatest despair and thus the greatest pleasure. Izuru is less than convinced, partially because consistently doing it seems like it’d get boring and partially because he just doesn’t enjoy despair.
* LackOfEmpathy: Izuru is incredibly callous to anyone not named Chiaki. It’s most explicit when watching the Killing Game—while she’s horrified and saddened by what Class 78 goes through, he remarks on it being boring several times and only wants to be entertained.
* TheLadysFavor: Chiaki's hairpin turns out to be this. Izuru returns it to her when she wakes up, only for her to give it back to him [[spoiler:when he leaves for Towa City and later semi-permanently]] as a promise he'll come back.
* LonelyRichKid: Chiaki’s backstory. Her parents showered her with money and video games in lieu of actual affection, and she had no friends before entering Hope’s Peak—the other kids mistook her shyness for being stuck-up and thought she was weird for loving video games so much.
* LoveConfession: [[spoiler:After learning he’s going to leave for an unknown period of time, Chiaki decides not to repeat her mistake with Hajime and gives one of these to Izuru in Chapter 18. He returns it, to her absolute joy.]]
* MemoryGambit: [[spoiler:Izuru predicts one of the potential outcomes of entering the Neo World Program being his possession by Junko's AI. Knowing that she would have access to his memories and would kill Chiaki, he plans to have all knowledge of saving her and their time together temporarily suppressed in case that worst scenario comes to pass. Before doing so, he gives Chiaki a TriggerPhrase to use to restore them if it doesn't.]]
* MoralityPet: For all his BlueAndOrangeMorality, Izuru holds genuine affection for Chiaki and actively takes steps to protect her from any negative ramifications that may come of ''VisualNovel/SuperDanganRonpa2''. It even exceeds his desire for unpredictability, as while he finds her HeroicBSOD interesting, he values her comfort and happiness more.
* MuggingTheMonster: Chapter 8 briefly shifts to the perspective of a mugger, aiming to rob his newest targets. Unfortunately for him, one of his targets is [[TheAce Izuru Kamukura]], and the other is [[MoralityPet Chiaki Nanami]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Retrospectively. Once she remembers leading her classmates into a trap, Chiaki is so anguished she falls into a depression.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: In her own words, Chiaki is “weirdly touchy”. Izuru isn’t particularly bothered by it, but [[spoiler:Kanon]] finds it uncomfortable when Chiaki sits too close.
* NoSocialSkills: Conversation with Izuru tends to be stilted and awkward since he doesn't always talk back, he sometimes walks away or otherwise ends it abruptly, he’s [[BrutalHonesty very blunt]], and he stares a lot. Justified since he was kept hidden away from society and thus never developed those skills.
* NotSoDifferent: Izuru’s similarities to Junko are underlined frequently, as both are geniuses with [[BlueAndOrangeMorality skewed moral compasses]] seeking an escape from their boredom. He himself notes and loathes it.
* NotSoStoic: In the first chapter, Izuru is far more frazzled than anywhere else in the fic, both from being caught off-guard by the sudden swell of emotions and from having a very narrow window to save Chiaki's life.
* OfficialCouple: As of [[spoiler:Chapter 18]], Chiaki and Izuru. Though [[StarCrossedLovers circumstances]] make things complicated.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Chiaki mentions to have been peripherally aware of Class 78 in some way, mostly via proxy to their relationships with her other classmates (ie listening to Fuyuhiko complain about Yasuhiro's debt, hearing Akane and Nekomaru talk about sparring with Sakura, some being fans of Sayaka's idol group).
* OneeSama: Everyone in the seventh division adores Miaya, who is a bit more [[BunnyEarsLawyer silly]] than this trope normally entails but is also soft-spoken, reserved, polite, and affectionate.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Izuru first realizes something is seriously wrong with Chiaki when he sees the shattered pieces of her Game Girl Advance on the floor.
* ParentalNeglect: Chiaki’s parents were too busy to provide emotional support; they substituted games for affection, their ‘celebration’ for her birthday was telling her to do whatever she wanted, and they apparently never noticed when their own daughter would sleep at public cafes instead of coming home.
* PerspectiveFlip: We get to see the events of [[VisualNovel/DanganRonpa the school killing life]] from Chiaki’s perspective, as one of the viewers.
* PrecisionFStrike: Junko interfering with the Second Killing Game infuriates Izuru so much, he outright calls her a bitch the next time his POV rolls around.
* RealityEnsues: You cannot get up and move on with your life after eight months in a coma. When Chiaki first wakes up, she can barely move because her muscles have atrophied and literally needs Izuru to do everything for her. It takes her a year of physical therapy to regain her mobility, not to mention months of mental therapy for her PTSD.
* ShipperOnDeck: While watching the [[VisualNovel/DanganRonpa events of the first game]], Chiaki off-handedly mentions thinking Makoto and Kyoko are good for each other.
* ShoutOut: A LOT of video games get name-dropped, too many to reference. It’s a given that most of the narration comes from the Ultimate Gamer, who uses them as points of reference for things she lacks experience in.
* SleptThroughTheApocalypse: Chiaki is in a coma throughout the fall of Hope’s Peak and the first few months of the Tragedy.
* StarCrossedLovers: Poor Chiaki gets in this again, this time with Izuru. They do love each other, but [[BrokenAce Izuru has]] [[BlueAndOrangeMorality too many issues]] for a relationship to work.
* StepfordSmiler: Despite [[BreakTheCutie everything she's gone through]], Chiaki refuses to give up hope or her ideals and keeps forging ahead, even though she has a lot of baggage.
* TheStoic: As per usual, Izuru barely shows emotion, and when he does it’s in minuscule amounts.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: While his ‘sugar’ side is still pretty chilly, Izuru is noticeably softer and more emotional around Chiaki. With everyone else he has a severe LackOfEmpathy.
* ThemeNaming: The fic and all its chapters take their names from video game terminology.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Chiaki’s reaction to learning the [[EvilFeelsGood reasons]] behind Junko’s villainy.
* TookALevelInBadass: Chiaki resolves to never be as helpless as she was in ''Side:Despair'' 10 again, and starts learning to protect herself [[spoiler:when she joins the Future Foundation]].
* TraumaButton: The sight of elevators trigger Chiaki back to the events of ''Side:Despair'' 10. Neither she nor Izuru are aware of it when they watch the Killing Game, so when she sees Class 78 enter the elevator for the first trial, she has a complete meltdown.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: For her first few POV chapters, Chiaki has amnesia about the events that put her in a coma. She [[HeroicBSOD does not take it well]] when she remembers.
* TriggerPhrase: [[spoiler:“Up up down down left right left right B A”.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Chiaki holds this for her friends and Chisa, to the extent she won’t even think of exposing the latter.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Emotions in general give Izuru some confusion, but especially his feelings for Chiaki. He can explain physical attraction away with logic, but not genuine care.
* WhenHeSmiles: Hajime apparently had a beautiful smile when he actually gave one. [[spoiler:Izuru does too, though it’s tiny.]]
