The first story in the series, A New Chance at Life, was started in Feb. 16th 2010 and completed on May 26th 2011. The story starts at the end of [[Anime/PokemonHeroes Movie #5]], where [[OlympusMons Latios']] HeroicSacrifice is averted, so now the dragon is very much alive. Out of gratitude and a desire for adventure, Latios and his sister Latias decide to join Ash on his adventure. The story covers the remainder of Ash's journey's through the Johto Region (based on the author's [[WildMassGuessing belief regarding the location of Altomare]]), up until the conclusion of the Silver Conference and its immediate aftermath. It ends with a SequelHook leading up to our heroes' adventures in the Hoenn Region.

* GenreSavvy: During Team Magma's raid on the Oldale Town ruins, one of the grunts worries about the possibility of a trainer in the Pokémon Centre above the ranks of most rookies - who might even have a Legendary Pokémon in his possession. Unsurprisingly, he cries ProperlyParanoid when his totally-unlikely guess turns out to be true, and is much quicker to recognise their imminent defeat in a fight of "quality versus quantity".

** BigBadEnsemble: Maxie and Archie in "A New Chance For Adventure" (if the preview is to be believed).
** BiggerBad: Giovanni, who in contrast to canon has an active sub-plot; one which will play a role during the sequel.

* MysteriousProtector:[[spoiler: Skailyn, a Shiny Rayquaza and friend of Latios and Latias, secretly aids the team in their rescue of Larvitar's mother from Rico, has one of her minions erase the memory of Officer jenny so Latios isn't charged with Rico's murder, and sets up a protective sphere(that they are unaware of) to shield them from the evil spirit that tried to kill them over a century ago.]]

* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: At the end of ''Hunting the Hunter'', Ash and Officer Jenny are able to rescue Team Rocket's Pokemon, but arrive too late to save Larvitar's mother]].

* XanatosGambit: Giovanni engages in one. He allows Jessie, James, and Meowth to pursue Ash, and report where he is. If they capture Pikachu and the Eon Twins for him, he wins. If they don't, he can still figure out where Ash is if he wishes to take him down, or simply stay ahead of him and keep him out of his plans. [[spoiler: He never accounted for them to quit though.]]

** This is already become evident in the sequel, with the appearance of Team Magma, the return of the evil entity that was apparently responsible for [[spoiler: the death of Latios and Latias' dad through a deadly soul curse]], and [[spoiler: Latios ''crushing one of the villains to death in cold blood'' after gloating about selling Larvitar's mother to Team Magma.]]

* FamedInStory: After competing in the Silver Conference with Latios, Ash gains a lot of fame, fans ([[FanBoy especially Max]]), and the recognition he never got in canon, with various figures knowing him from Johto, or from the fact that he has Latios.

* AttentionDeficitCreatorDisorder: After posting the first three chapters of ANCFA monthly, the story wasn't updated for over four months. This is because the author diverted his attention to his other stories - one a ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8068957/1/Stopping_The_Storm massive oneshot]]'' which grew beyond the predicted word count. With S.T.S. completed, he ''finally'' posted the new chapter.

* TheDreaded: Amazingly, '''ASH''' gets this treatment, since he is now known after Johto as the "kid with the Latios." It is especially shown when Giovanni is given assignments to two of his agents, who also have a bone to pick. He is basically ordering them to infiltrate Team Aqua and Magma, but he also warns them to stay away from Ash unless they know they can win. To put that in perspective, Giovanni is more afraid of dealing with a kid ''not thirteen years of age'' then with infiltrating another criminal enterprise.

* EntitledBastard: Jessie and James end up begging Ash to rescue their Pokemon from. Initially everyone except [[AllLovingHero Ash]] and [[GenkiGirl Latias]] outright refused. But when they learn it was Rico they proceed to give chase, since he was the one who purchased Larvitar's mother. [[spoiler: It is defied later when after Ash returns their Pokemon, Brock lectures them on the fact that the kid who they've been chasing and trying to rob for years just saved their Pokemon, and it would be disgusting to ever try and rob him again. They end up resigning from Team Rocket.]]

* AdaptationalVillainy: Giovanni, and by extension the Team Rocket higher-ups receive this treatment. For the most part he stays in the shadows while the bumbling Team Rocket trio tries to rob people. Here, his experiments against Pokemon are given more prominence, like the creation of slave Pokemon, who are totally devoid of empathy and are raised to blindly follow their trainer. [[spoiler: And let's not forgot Project Incarceration.]]

* TimeAbyss: Many of the older Legendaries have been around for millions of years. [[spoiler: A century in a Soul Dew doesn't really bother Father Latios as much as missing out on raising his children.]] The infant Lugia encountered in the Whirl Islands is alone older than human history.
