Conference, Ash and his friends set their sights on the Hoenn League. But his journey through Hoenn is one that promises a foray of new challenges, a new series of friends and rivals to be met, and a powerful evil ready to rise…

* GoodIsNotNice: Latios. His overprotectiveness of Latias can grate on her, and lengths he goes to punish group's enemies can frighten Ash. This is best shown when he permanently incapacitates the poachers that sold Larvitar's mother. [[spoiler: He also kills Rico after he gloats about selling Larvitar's mother.]]

* MoralityChain: Ash is this to Latios. While Latios isn't violent, he is merciless toward his opponents, and Ash usually has to stop him from killing the criminals they battle. A good example is when he has beaten the Team Magma grunts and their pokemon, he still wants to unleash Dragonbreath on his already beaten opponents... only for Pikachu to remind him about how Ash would feel about him hurting people when their already helpless.

* GoodIsNotNice: Latios plays with this trope. While he isn't a total jerk, he can very aloof and paranoid toward humans, which can grate on Latias. His emotions can lead him to do frightening things. Such as his MindRape of the poachers that took Larvitar's mother, nearly maiming(or worse) the Team Magma agents and their Mightyena, because he called him ''an unimportant legendary'', and his [[spoiler: murder of Rico for gloating about selling Larvitar's mother.]] Also [[spoiler: when Team Rocket begged Ash to rescue their Pokemon, Latios was happy to let them suffer... until he found out it was Rico that stole them.]] It is usually Ash and Latias who have to bring him under control.

* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: [[spoiler: Brock tells this to Team Rocket to convince them to quit, citing the fact that their past experiences with them prove that their not total monsters. By Chapter 13, it is clear he succeeded.]]

* EvilPlan:[[spoiler: Team Rockets Project Incarceration: Giovanni intends to capture much of the world's Legendary Pokemon with Prison Balls, which not only bends a Pokemon to the trainer's absolute will, but destroys any remnant of their original personality and accentuates their awesome power. With five Legendary's Team Rocket could rule the world.]]

* ReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler: After Ash and company rescue stop Rico and rescue Team Rocket's pokemon, but not before he sold his mom to Team Magma, Bianca harshly criticizes them for stealing and for refering to Ash as "twerp". After Arbok, Ekans, and Meowth are returned to Jessie and James, Brock gives his own. Though more composed and organized,it really digs into them, and becomes a plea for them to change by making them realize several things: That they feel the pain of losing Pokemon, and have been doing that to Ash for years, that they simply ''can't'' beat Ash at anything, and if they start going back to trying to steal Pikachu from Ash, it means they are truly irredeemable. The result? Jessie and James resign from Team Rocket.]]

* EntitledBastard:[[spoiler: Jessie and James end up begging Ash to rescue their Pokemon from. Initially everyone (except Ash and Latias) outright refuse. But when they learn it was Rico they proceed to give chase. It is subverted later when after Ash returns their Pokemon, Jessie and James-with some words from Brock- decide they can't keep trying to steal Pikachu and quit Team Rocket.]]

** Latios has no pity for poachers who would separate a mother from her child for money [[spoiler: [[AssholeVictim Rico]] paid the ultimate price for this.]]

* TheWorfEffect: Barring [[SpotlightStealingSquad Latios and Charizard]], Ash's other Pokémon actually fare somewhat poorly during the matches against Gary and Harrison (in the former match, only Pikachu takes out a single Pokémon, Umbreon - while Charizard beats three and Latios defeats two). Narrative-wise, this is evidenly done to give Latios a chance to shine and prove he's nearly a GameBreaker for the unprepared. YMMV on whether this is a good thing or not.

** [[spoiler: Latios' murder of Rico, while possibly deserving of a fate, causes trouble for Ash. The Officer Jenny ends up having to investigate Ash since as Latios' trainer, he is responsible for what Latios' does...[[SubvertedTrope Of course, Skailyn as her Froslass minion alter Officer Jenny's memory]] to prevent Latios and Ash from getting in trouble.]]

And if Skailyn's anger was any indication, was responsible for a lot more evil in the ancient past.]]

* MysteriousProtector:[[Skailyn, a Shiny Rayquaza and friend of Latios and Latias, secretly aids the team in their rescue of Larvitar's mother from Rico, has one of her minions erase the memory of Officer jenny so Latios isn't charged with Rico's murder, and sets up a protective sphere(that they are unaware of) to shield them from the evil spirit that tried to kill them over a century ago.]]
