Touma explains that that morning, Index attacked him for not stocking up on Yorkshire pudding for Christmas, making him have to climb out the balcony and over to Tsuchimikado's to escape her. He slipped and fell down one story onto a different balcony, the jacket catching onto a loose nail and tearing. Mikoto notes that only explains one rip, but not the other two; turns out the balcony Touma fell onto was that of a partially undressed woman that went at him with a knife, but he was just lucky enough that his jacket had fallen onto his head, concealing his identity and absorbing the knife blows. She got off two slashes before Touma could escape, so he had to wear a ruined jacket the entire last school day before winter break.
