He genuinely never intended to hurt Esperanza even while capturing his nemesis her husband, when she is shot accidently in the ensuring fight by one of his soldiers while trying to protect Diego, Rafael gives a BigNo and kills the soldier on the spot. After Esperanza's death he keeps a massive painting of her in his estate. Montero also did come to love and Esperanza and Diego's daughter Elena as his own, despite it him only taking her initally to [[KickTheDog spite]] de la Vega and [[ReplacementGoldfish make up for the loss of Esperanza in his life]]. While he certainly wasn't above holding a gun to Elena in order to make Diego drop his sword during their duel in the climax, Rafael still states it was a bluff and would never actually hurt her.
