Like Casey Wilson's time on the show in the late 2000s, Michaela Watkins' time on Saturday Night Live was woefully brief and, at times, lost in the shuffle of political satire and Kristen Wiig dominating the show as the kooky, middle-aged female cast member.

Watkins studied acting at Boston University then moved to Portland, where she performed in regional theater as well as with improv group Toad City Productions. In 2000 she moved to Los Angeles and performed with Circle X Theatre and 2100 Square Feet. Before becoming an SNL cast member, Watkins had small roles on Charmed, Without a Trace, Medium, Grey’s Anatomy, Malcolm in the Middle, and Californication, as well as a recurring role on The New Adventures of Old Christine (which starred another former Saturday Night Live cast member: Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Watkins was then hired (along with Abby Elliott) for SNL in 2008 (their first episode being the post-2008 election episode hosted by Paul Rudd with musical guest Beyoncé and a cameo by Justin Timberlake). Despite having a semi-popular recurring character (Angie Tempura, a snarky celebrity blogger) and five pitch-perfect celebrity impressions (Hoda Kotb, Arianna Huffington, Barbara Walters, Joan Rivers, and, coincidentally, Julia Louis-DreyfusWatkins also has an Ann Coulter impression, but that was cut after dress rehearsal from the Rosario Dawson episode), Watkins only lasted 15 episodeswhich, according to this list of shortest-lived cast members, puts her above Dan Aykroyd's brother, Peter, for appearing the most during her short time on the show and was let go (along with Casey Wilson) at the end of season 34 (2008-2009 season).
