After a stint with the Royal National Theatre -- where she worked with John Gielgud, who, she says, [[http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/03/09/jenny-agutter-interview-call-the-midwife_n_1335137.html truly taught her the craft of acting]] -- she left for Los Angeles at 21 and remained there for over a decade, appearing in, among others, ''The Man in the Iron Mask'', ''The Eagle Has Landed'', ''An American Werewolf in London'', ''Logan's Run'', and ''Theatre/{{Equus}}'', the last of which won her a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.

She did continue to appear on television, radio, and the odd film, including playing stressed politician's wife Connie Spencer in ''And The Beat Goes On'' and Tessa Phillips in ''Series/{{Spooks}}''. In 2000, she made a dramatic and heartwarming return to ''The Railway Children'' in Creator/{{ITV}}'s telefilm of the novel, this time playing the mother opposite Jemima Rooper as a worthy successor to Agutter's iconic Bobbie.

A tremendous self-esteem boost in her 30s led to a far more candid Jenny Agutter; though always genuinely warm, sweet, and down-to-earth, these days she is willing to allow her grumps and flaws to show. Funny enough, with this came far more control over her career; she is far choosier now about her roles than she was early on, spends more time with her family, and in 1997 finally felt confident enough to return to the National Theatre after nearly a quarter-century as Mrs Darling in ''Peter Pan''.

Most recently she appeared as a shadowy member of the World Security Council in the 2012 box office smash ''Film/TheAvengers2012'', a role she reprised in 2014's ''[[Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier The Winter Soldier]]''. Meanwhile, she is also playing a lead role in ''Series/CallTheMidwife'', the BBC's biggest hit in ten years, as the devout, lively nun-in-charge Sister Julienne, head midwife of Nonnatus House; the drama has been a surprise ratings smash and will likely run for several more years.

* ContractualPurity: She became a sex symbol with the films ''Film/LogansRun'', ''Film/AnAmericanWerewolfInLondon'' and even earlier with ''Walkabout'' where she appeared nude at the age of sixteen. This prevented people from seeing her entirely as Bobbie Waterbury.
* FakeIrish: In the MadeForTVMovie ''A War of Children'' she plays Maureen, who is a Belfast native.
* ProductionPosse: She, David Schofield and John Woodvine had worked on ''Film/AnAmericanWerewolfInLondon'' together and all reunited to work on ''Burke & Hare''.
* ThoseTwoActors: With Michael York in ''Film/LogansRun'', ''September'' and ''The Riddle of the Sands''.

* CreatorBacklash: She disliked her costume in ''Film/LogansRun'', though she's proud of the finished film.
* TheDanza: Parodied. The girl she played in ''Walkabout'' doesn't have a name and is only credited as 'The Girl'. Jenny joked that she called her Jenny in her head.
* DawsonCasting: In ''Literature/TheRailwayChildren'' she was seventeen playing Bobbie at fifteen. However this was averted in the BBC version of the book, where she was the right age.

* IronyAsSheIsCast: She identifies as an atheist, making it ironic that she plays a nun in ''Series/CallTheMidwife''.
* OldShame: She regrets having done ''Film/ChildsPlay2'' (likely due to how her character was DemotedToExtra in the theatrical cut, while the deleted scenes that were later ReCut for TV she filmed fleshed out her character more long with her co-star Gerrit Graham's character), saying "It was much less than the script I read."

* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Cast in the film ''Walkabout'' when she was fifteen but funding delayed filming until she had turned sixteen. As she was now of age, she was allowed to be nude in the film.
* RealitySubtext: Her aunt was a midwife so she already had an idea of her role in ''Series/CallTheMidwife'' from her stories.
* RemakeCameo: She plays Mother in the 2000 adaptation of ''The Railway Children''.
* StarMakingRole: ''Literature/TheRailwayChildren'' of course!
* ThoseTwoActors: With Michael York in ''Film/LogansRun'', ''September'' and ''The Riddle In The Sands''.
* TrollingCreator: When she was announced for ''Film/TheAvengers2012'' she joked she was playing ComicBook/SpiderWoman.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The CatFight between Jessica and Hollie in ''Film/LogansRun'' was meant to be longer. But Jenny and Farrah Fawcett got so into it that the director was worried they'd end up fighting for real.
** They were going do to ''that'' scene in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' with a stunt double. Jenny however lobbied to do it herself, citing her ballet training.
* YouLookFamiliar: She starred in two episodes of ''Series/TheTwilightZone'' playing different characters - Morgan Le Fay in "The Last Defender of Camelot" and Jacinda Carlyle in "Voices In The Earth".
