* The Universal Calendar of the ''MobileSuitGundam'' franchise. The One Year War which causes the deaths of half the population of the Solar System is between the Earth Federation, a corrupt, incompetent, and racist government unable to properly defend the solar system vs the Principality of Zeon, who started the war by gassing a colony full of millions of people and dropping it on the Earth. Even after the One Year War was over, war constantly sprung up due to the weakness (and/or the [[ZetaGundam malice]]) of the Earth Federation, and {{Complete Monster}}s are incredibly common. You can seriously argue that the solar system would have been better off if both sides had wiped each other out.

* ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' is a serious case of this trope. Are you a {{Muggle|s}}? Enjoy getting DrivenToSuicide by a witch. Are you a witch? Enjoy being warped into a horrifying EldritchAbomination and getting killed by a magical girl. Are you a magical girl? Enjoy being cut off from all your friends and spending the rest of your life at a shitty job where the smallest misstep can spell swift death. And it doesn't even stop there -- [[spoiler:by accepting the contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl, you basically become a {{Lich}}, and if you ''don't'' die horribly at some point, you eventually turn into a Witch]]. And the universe itself? [[spoiler:Is undergoing entropy, such that it will eventually die if not fed a steady diet of emotional energy by the Kyubeys (though we still don't know whether that is even true or if Kyubey is just fucking with people's heads for its own amusement)]]. *** To top it all off, the Soul Reapers and entire government of Soul Society are for the most part [[JerkAss jerkasses]]. If you are fortunate enough to live in one of the better districts of Soul Society many of them bully non-Soul Reaper inhabitants. Otherwise you are on your own and probably going to live a short afterlife. Should you become a Soul Reaper and survive battles with the Hollows you are pretty much at the mercy of the captain of your division or anybody who is of higher rank than you. If you get a nice one all the good for you. If you get one of the meaner ones they can kill you on a whim and not get punished for it. Several of these captains either were or are sociopaths or psychopaths who could kill you just for fun. You cannot even count on the justice system to help. It cares little at what goes beyond the Court of Pure Souls. Anything that is ruled to disturb the peace of Soul Society will be twisted to violate one of its laws. Death being the preferred punishment with no chance to defend yourself or appeal. Any deviation from its strict rules is not tolerated. The only way out of this is if your punishment would create havoc due to having influential friends. Then you can do pretty much whatever you want, even murder in broad daylight. Don't count on the king to help you. No one has seen him in forever.
*** And to top it all off, how about actually being good enough to become a ''Captain'' in Soul Society? Well, I guess you'd better be pretty damn loyal to the "law of the world", whatever the hell that means. Because one wrong step - just ''one'' broken law - and Central 46 will punish you severely. **** It bears mentioning however that the above is pretty slanted. Granted, great evil exists in the world of {{Bleach}}, but calling it a Crapsack World is a massive stretch. A world is a Crapsack if that is the way it is presented. Much of the above is simply taking what we've seen, including the instances which are stated to be rare or even one-of-a-kind, and turning them into the norm. Suffice to say, in the world of {{Bleach}}, nothing and no-one is perfect. Neither good nor evil or power or weakness are absolute anywhere there.

** {{Gundam SEED}} starts off similar to UC calender series, where most of the conflict stems from political and ideological reasons, but soon goes off the deep end and degenerates into hell on earth, literally. The earth is going through an energy crisis due to nuclear power jammers that have been integrated by ZAFT, almost the entire world is controlled by one side or the other through draconian military regimes, much of Earth is in ruins due to the war, and both sides are equally willing to use WMDs on their enemies and ALLIES equally. In addition, the main source of scientific progress has come from a series of genetic experiments that spawned a worldwide terrorist ideology and the war itself and recently reached the utter abandonment of the value of life in order to pursue a goal that would give birth to [[spoiler:[[TheMessiah Kira Yamato]] and [[DarkMessiah Rau Le]][[OmnicidalManiac Creuset]]]].

** In fairness, although it starts out completely bleak, it doesn't ''stay'' that way, thanks to Kenshiro (and a few tough allies). In fact, the whole point of the story (Tetsuo Hara said something to this effect) was that even one selfless, brave, honorable hero could save the world. Pretty harsh place to live, no question, but solidly on the "idealisim" side of the scale.

* Any work of MohiroKitoh qualifies, most especially ''{{Bokurano}}'' (the manga at least), which takes place in a Multiverse Half Empty with, without giving anything away, about as hopeless a scenario as anyone can imagine. As well as effectiveness savaging modern day life, his work focuses on the individual effort of people to stay noble in the face of such circumstances.

** The setting of ''{{Gundam 00}}'' is a crapsack world as well, with the people living in poverty suffering endless warfare while the rich people relying on the giant solar panel system not giving a fuck about them. In both cases, we have the ByronicHero Celestial Being who are among the very few people truly willing to change the world for the better even though their methods are questionable at worst.

Fun for everyone!

*** Oh, should we mention that the Spirit King, the God of Soul Society, is a lazy bum who stays in another dimension, doing who-knows-what, and the only way to open it is making a key, which needs the souls of an ENTIRE CITY to be created. Oh, and according to the previously mentioned BigBad, he is most possibly an EldritchAbomination, [[EvenEvilHasStandards whom even [[spoiler: Aizen despises.]]]]
