* AmbiguouslyEvil: She's deliberately tried to stop Colter from interacting with Russel, perpetuating the belief that Russel was the reason for Ashton's death, and is suggested to be keeping secrets from him, something Dory is quick to call out when she sees Colter for the first time in years and reveals she ''has'' been talking to Russel. Russel himself claims Mary turned him into TheScapegoat for Ashton's death, having kicked him out shortly after their dad died, and Russel's attempts at calling Colter was so he could set the record straight and tell him he thinks that ''Mary'' was responsible for Ashton's death.

* ReallyMovesAround: Colter lives in a trailer that he drives around cross country in, and tends to only stay in town for as long as there is a job there, always being quick to pack up and leave once the job is done. This is meant to highlight his own issues with forming attachments, as while plenty of the people he helps invite him to stay or keep in contact, Colter is content keeping everyone at arms length and doesn't like forming attachments, with any romantic relationships he makes being [[NotStayingForBreakfast casual flings]]. Rennie and Bob try calling him out on this in "Chicago", inviting him to go out with them to celebrate, but he's almost antsy to get back on the road, something Dory points out later in "Beyond the Campus Walls" as being what he always does: close himself off from others even when they try to reach out.

* TheScapegoat: {{Invoked|Trope}} when he and Colter finally talk. Russell makes clear to Colter he ''didn't'' kill their dad, he just found him already dead with Colter standing over him. Russell said there was another person in the woods that night, and thinks they were responsible, stating that said person was someone he saw their ''mother'' talking with, insinuating ''she'' had their dad killed and put the blame on Russell, helped by Russell stating she all but kicked him out after their dad died.

Even if he goes the extra mile to personally perform the rescue, when he could easily leave also has a habit of skirting the law instead of leaving it to the authorities.authorities, only really working with them if it's to his benefit in finding someone. * AntiHero: Colter's job is locating and rescuing people, but does it for the reward money offered. Even if he goes the extra mile to personally perform the rescue, when he could easily leave it to the authorities.
* ConsummateProfessional: Colter takes pride in providing a fair service in exchange for the reward on offer. He'll go to great lengths and put himself in physical danger while refusing any up-front fees and not charging expenses. In exchange, he expects to be paid the full, promised amount promptly.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: We are introduced to Colter with him helping a heavily injured women lost out in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. He's polite, treats her injuries, jokes around with her, quickly realizes she has hypothermia from being out in the cold weather, and keeps her calm once she realizes her leg has been badly broken. This informs us that this is a pretty decent guy who knows a lot about finding people and surviving. Then once he gets her to safety, he politely asks her husband for the reward money that was promised.
* NiceGuy: Despite technically doing this for the money Colter really is a kind and caring individual who truly does care about helping his clients. He will insist on being paid but he will also put his life on the line to making sure their loved one is brought home safe and sound.
* PunchClockHero: Subverted in that, while Colter is getting paid by the reward money, he does also really care about finding the missing person and bringing them home safely. However, once the job is done, he'll insist that his employer(s) immediately honor their financial agreement in full.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: Downplayed, Colter is a good survivalist and tracker who picks up good on details, including in people, but he still requires assistance in areas such as getting access to footage and online records of people to give him a more decent direction on where to look.
