* BeneathTheMask: He wants his girls to follow and service him, sexually or otherwise, from loyalty based on love and trust, not from fear and desperation. This is because he does genuinely love them, dearly. As such, he ''always'' projects to them the image of a hopelessly naive NiceGuy who will forgive his enemies, given a chance. In reality, he's domineering, exceptionally possessive, sexually sadistic (as he's let slip on several occasions), and particularly vicious and brutal when provoked. Chisato believes his "darker" nature is the reason Brynhildr likes him so much, and actively seeks to draw it out so he can not only control, but draw out the sword's true power better.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Invokes this full force when protecting Mio.
* CasualKink: He's a natural at being the "S" in an S&M relationship. Whether by accident or by design, Maria was correct in making him the "Master" of the Master-Servant pact.
* CategoryTraitor: Except for Yuki, all other child survivors of Brynhildr's rampage (because they weren't present at the training grounds), have been thoroughly indoctrinated into believing Basara is a cold-blooded traitor, for stopping Brynhildr and saving their lives. Thus they insist on making him suffer for "the disgrace of being associated with him." This predominantly includes Takashi and Kurumi, Yuki's actual blood-related younger sister, until the latter pulls a HeelFaceTurn.

* DeclarationOfProtection: Basara's top priority is protecting his new family.

* DidYouThinkICantFeel: Basara doesn't show much reaction when his former comrades mock and insult him for taking sides with the demon lord's daughter and make no attempt to hide their animosity towards him for causing the death of many of their other friends. [[TheResenter Takashi]], in particular, assumes that Basara even forgot what happened and is the most hostile towards him for that reason. Mio is fully aware that all the insults thrown at him does in fact hurt Basara, and makes sure that the heroes know it.
* DirtyKid: Although he refuses to confirm or deny Yuki's claim that he loved to feel up her butt whenever she embraced him, he does internally admit that he liked to do perverted things with her when they were both 10 years old, if not younger.
* DistractedByTheSexy: When Shella suggests making a pact with Zest, Basara has a hard time tearing his eyes away from Zest's body. In his defense, she's very attractive, very naked, and in a very suggestive, submissive position.
* TheExile: Both himself and his father were excommunicated from their home village.
* ExoticExtendedMarriage: If he ever sets up shop in the Demon world, he'd certainly qualify. By the end of volume 7, he's in a de-facto marriage with Mio, Yuki, and Zest. * EveryScarHasAStory: His thoughts reveal that all the scars he's covered with came about as a direct result of the Brynhildr incident, and "the village" made them a permanent MarkOfShame as part of his exile.
* FlirtyStepsiblings: With Mio, and definitely with Maria.
* FragileSpeedster: His greatest strength in combat is his raw speed that makes him hard to hit, but if someone or something does hit him, he goes down, hard.
* GambitRoulette: Turns out the tournament arc was one. [[spoiler:By defeating Leohart in the tournament while simultaneously undermining the Demon Council through publicly exposing their sins, and weakening them with the death of Belphegor, the most vocal and insistent on stealing Mio, he eliminated the vast majority of the forces looking to steal Mio away for themselves.]] Unusual for this case in that Basara knows precisely how big a gamble it is and everything that could go wrong, but goes through with it because he doesn't have any other options.
* GoodIsNotSoft: If his loved ones are threatened, he will be as brutal and heartless as he needs to be to remove the threat, permanently. This is something Zolgia discovers to his horror, first hand, but far, far too late to save him.
* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Invoked. Even though he can't go all the way to full-blown intercourse because the women he loves can't risk losing their VirginPower for fear of their lives, pact or no, he doesn't just engage in sexual acts with them, he makes love to all of them, to the point where he can make an orgy heartwarming, and it clearly shows.
* GuileHero: He's clearly not a typical Shonen hero. Chisato acknowledges that he has an exceptionally keen strategic and tactical mind in volume 4 when it was only sheer luck that prevented Basara's plan from exposing Ornis, and herself.
* HarmfulToMinors: When he was at the age of 10, a man with more hatred and FantasticRacism than sense grabbed the cursed sword Brynhildr out of its sacred holding ground while the Hero Clan's heavy hitters were away, planning to genocide the Demon Race. The sword took him over and tried to make him genocide the Hero Clan instead, starting with the children. Of the children, only Basara and Yuki survived because of Basara's power having awakened. When the elders arrived after it was all over, they had no choice but to exile Basara.
* HasTwoMommies: [[spoiler:Both Jin and Chisato have made mentions that Basara has two mothers and neither of them being stepmothers.]]
* HeroesPreferRedheads: While it is true that he doesn't play favorites, and actively strives to give all his girls the same level of affection, the anime clearly paints him as favoring Mio.
* HeroicNeutral: Basara doesn't ''want'' to fight, period. He'd be much happier living with his "sisters," ie, his UnwantedHarem in peace, all as reasonable facsimiles of ordinary high-school students. He fights and kills the antagonists only because they keep coming after him, those he cares about, or both, and refuse to stop trying, no matter how clear it is that he has no interest in them, until they go and attack him first.
* HiddenDepths: Maria notes that despite his nice demeanor, he has a hidden calling as a "sadistic brute". Best seen when he has to subjugate his servants or when his resistance crumbles away.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Basara suffers from this in episode 4. Fortunately for him it's OnlyAFleshWound, and recovers from it.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: No one shed a tear when he murdered Belphegor.
* LargeAndInCharge: Aside from his father, Jin, (and not taking into account Zest's horns) he's the tallest character in the Tōjō household, and he's clearly the one in charge of the harem, thanks to the nature of the pacts and his own inherent leadership ability.
* MissingMom: His mother passed away a long time ago. Actually, he has two.
* NewTransferStudent: He transfers to Mio's school in order to stay closer to her and protect her against demons trying to kill her.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: When Basara defeats the man who steals the Brynhildr with his Banishing Shift, he inadvertently kills several of his own kind. He is driven off the Hero Village for his trouble, with his clan calling him a traitor.
* PapaWolf: Harm his younger sister or any one of his harem and you're as good as dead.
* PowerLimiter: He has '''three''', and with good reason. Breaking the first could easily make him become TheBerserker. The second results in a HeroicRROD, and the last makes him a PersonOfMassDestruction with little control over his power, the equivalent of a living FantasticNuke.
* PowerOfTrust: On the advice of Maria, Lars, and Shella, this is how he uses the Master-servant pact to optimize the fighting strength of himself and his BattleHarem. The more mutual trust that exists, the stronger everyone gets.
* RetGone: The true danger of his "Banishing Shift" ability. Anything that falls victim to this technique is treated by the universe as if it never existed. Only people's memories of the target remain. For good or ill, this power does not affect actions or consequences that occurred prior to its use.
* TheScapegoat: The Hero Clan holds Basara responsible for causing the massacre of his clan.
* SecretlyWealthy: He treats Yahiro to a very expensive meal and calls that "pocket change" from his own savings.
* SexualExtortion: Averted, surprisingly enough. Pact or no pact, the girls have to drag him kicking and screaming into being lewd with them, [[AboveTheInfluence at least at first.]]
* ShutUpHannibal: In volume 7, Basara gives one to [[spoiler:Belphegor before killing him with his Banishing Shift]].
* SignatureMove: Banishing Shift.
* SomeoneToRememberHimBy: More like "someone to remember her by." Chisato's primary desire to protect Basara comes from the fact that he's living proof that her sister existed. She later decides to protect him for his own sake.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Basara unveils the Demon Council's intentions to cause destruction in the Demon Realm as soon as he rescues Mio from Nebra during the latter's assault on the realm.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: Basara was unable to remember using Banishing Shift to stop Seito. He was told about it afterwards while lying in a hospital bed recovering from the Bryhnildr incident. Even in the present day, he's not sure if he actually killed anyone at that time, aside from Seito himself, or if he merely destroyed the corpses Seito himself piled up.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: His special ability Banishing Shift awakens when the cursed sword, Brynhildr, is being swung around, killing all his classmates. This is the only thing that allowed him and Yuki to live through the incident.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His use of Banishing Shift ability to protect the Hero Clan from the man who stole Brynhildr results in the Basara's exile from his home village.
* WillfullyWeak: Jin reveals that his three power limiters are self-imposed, due to the guilt over the Brynhildr incident.

** Basara does this to Maria to get her off of him while he's in bed during episode 5. He even admits it was a low blow move. However, he justifies it by stating her being naked inside his shirt and not getting off after he asked her to to be even lower. ** Basara is forced to do this against Kurumi in episode 7's duel with the heroes. He tries not to hurt her too much at least.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Basara can't return to the Hero Village due to the Brynhildr incident.
* YouKillItYouBoughtIt: Brynhildr chooses Basara as its master because Basara killed the host that it was possessing. Basara's had the cursed sword bound to him ever since.

* TheBerserker: When she takes over, she will inflict this fate on whoever wields her.
* GoodColorsEvilColors: She glows purple as "evil" and green as "good."
* GoodIsNotNice: She's perfectly content to follow Basara's lead whenever she can, and Basara is clearly a good person. When she's offended, and lashes out, she's a raging berserker who attacks without mercy or restraint and doesn't give a flip about collateral damage.
* HeroicSacrifice: According to Chisato, she became a sword, losing her body and soul, in order to seal away the evil spirit she was sealed away with.
* OnlyTheChosenMayWield: If Brynhildr doesn't choose you to be her master, and you lay hands on her anyway, the consequences are never pretty.
* PowerGlows: She glows every time she manifests her power, and she's very powerful indeed.
* RoarBeforeBeating: Whenever she's in control of a host, she makes that host roar with rage while committing violence.
* SentientPhlebotinum: Brynhildr has a mind of her own, she chooses to serve Basara.
* SharingABody: As is revealed in volume 7, Brynhildr's consciousness hides inside Basara's mind, watching, and if he's ever rendered unconscious while he's in mortal peril, she takes over.
* TaintedVeins: When controlling Basara, she makes his veins glow green, bordering on TronLines.
* TheVoiceless: She has no speaking lines, at all. The manga has a possessed Seito growl something along the lines of "damn 'hero' clan," but it's not clear if those are his words, hers, or those of the "evil spirits" she had contained at the time.
* WasOnceAMan: Chisato strongly implies that Brynhildr used to be one of the "gods" in the series, and is a close relative of Basara's.

* ActionGirl: Although she isn't as good due to only having learned about her powers within the last few months, compared to the years of training Kurumi, Maria, and Yuki had, or Zest being literally engineered for magical combat.
* AdaptationalBadass: In ''Burst'', [[spoiler: Chaos]] gets sucked into her UnrealisticBlackHole as opposed to being killed by Basara's Banishing Shift.
* AggressiveSubmissive: Acts very much "tsun" under normal circumstances, but becomes pretty submissive when her contract activates.

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: She professes her love for Basara in volume 7 [[spoiler:and it brings him out of his berserker state.]]

While she admits that this was a problem before Basara started massaging them, she is insistent that his "subjugation sessions" make it ''worse.''
* FauxActionGirl: Due to a serious lack of experience or the skill to control her power properly, she needs to be rescued the vast majority of the time. When she ''does'' manage to hold her own, she does so with aplomb, however.
* FieryRedhead: She has red hair and appropriately enough, she has a hot temper.

* HiddenBackupPrince: Mio learns she's the daughter of the demon king after he's killed off, and a hostile demon faction is intent on finding and killing her. He had her hidden away to live the life of a normal human up to that point. Once Basara also learns of this, he reconsiders having kicked them out of his house after they tried to brainwash him into leaving.
* {{Hypocrite}}: At least at first. She physically attacks Basara at any time he does something she considers perverted, backing it up with death-threats, but thinks nothing of barging in on him, waking him up by straddling him, underclothed, on his bed, and refuses to apologize for lashing out at him when she sees various forms of "little sister" porn in his room, even after Maria reveals that she planted it there. She slowly outgrows it, somewhat, starting with beating up Maria when the succubus "accidentally" makes her the "servant" of the contract.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: When her power runs amok, threatening to create an UnrealisticBlackHole, she begs Basara to kill her first.
* ItsAllMyFault: When Basara is struck down in front of her by one of Lars' minions coming out of her shadow, she runs off in the middle of the night so she wouldn't endanger him anymore. While this is a truly idiotic move, it's understandable due to the {{Trigger}} nature of the scene.
* LittleSisterHeroine: She's Basara's younger stepsister and a lot of tension and awkward situations between her and Basara.
* MaleGaze: Mio is often seen from low angles to show off her shapely body.
* MyFistForgivesYou: How does she respond to the fact that Zest had a major hand in putting her through hell at Zolgia's hands? One blast of ElectricTorture, no diferent than what she normally uses on Basara when she thinks he steps out of line, and she considers the matter settled. This is ''before'' Zolgia shows up and quite spectacularly demonstrates that Zest was only obeying him for fear of her life.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In episode 2, Basara tells Mio not to let anyone know they're living together as that would make things awkward if anyone at school found out. She then accidentally reveals this after getting upset at Yuki hugging him when he transfers in.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her foster parents died shortly before the beginning of the series. Her biological father is also dead.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: She single-handedly [[spoiler:annihilated a full-powered "Heroic Spirit" that has the power to easily level a city, by ''overpowering'' it.]]

* ScrewDestiny: After entering the demon realm and stopping Nebra from causing chaos there, she decides not to succeed her father and continue to live her life as a human, rendering Ramsus's plans for extracting his niece's powers pointless.
* SheWhoFightsMonsters: Since the death of her foster parents, just about every human she came across tried to take advantage of her. It all started with the estate lawyer handling her foster parents' inheritance trying to cheat her out of it, and every human who came to her aid from that point on having truly unhealthy ulterior motives. She came to the conclusion Jin was just more of the same after rescuing her from a gang of delinquents. She and Maria thought brainwashing Jin and Basara out of their home was a good idea, as a direct result. She has a bit of a HeelRealization after Basara kicks them out, but then, fortunately, Basara proves her wrong, by saving her life and promising to protect her without asking for anything in return.
* ShutUpHannibal: She gives one to Takashi after hearing him insult Basara for the umpteenth time.
* StrangledByTheRedString: Invoked and lampshaded. While her affection to Basara does have some merit on its own, it would take much longer, if it occurs at all, without the rather heavy-handed enforced loyalty being delivered by the Master-servant pact. The rest of the harem have various motives and histories that bring about affection to Basara in a more natural manner.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: According to Ortega, she's the spitting image of her mother, Ashe.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: For the series, she was perfectly willing to give up her power, that she never asked for, maybe even her life, if need be, in order to bring peace to the human and demon worlds, [[RelativeButton until Nebra deliberately blasted Basara with a "heroic spirit" right in front of her.]] At that point, she gave up on the idea, permanently, and swore bloody vengeance.
* TookALevelInBadass: At the start of the story, she needs to be rescued from even one lowly mook. By the conclusion of volume 7, she's curbstomping Kaiju.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: After seeing Basara struck down in front of her, twice, her magic power goes completely out of control, vaporizing the mook responsible for the second time, and nearly vaporizing the town.

* TooDumbToLive: It's not very wise to blow up the demon realm and taunt Basara that soon.

Not only does he actually ''agree'' with Wilbert's agenda to bring peace and prosperity to the entire Demon World, and its citizenry, without exception, but he honestly wants to make his marriage to Liala public, using the authority he gains as Demon Lord to allow her to walk the streets openly without fear of discrimination. He just happens to not be particularly choosy about the methods he uses to pursue these goals. Granted, the Demon Council doesn't really give him much choice.

* BewareTheSillyOnes: She's goofy, and quite childish, but she obliterates the entire council faster than they can blink.

* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: He doesn't give a damn about consent. Not only does Lars point out that he has a long history of violating women under a succubus attribute pact that belong to other masters, so he could sit back and enjoy the curse activate to its maximum over the resulting guilt and trauma, but near the end of Volume 3, he reaches out to rip Mio's clothes off, intending to rape her. [[AnArmAndALeg Of course,]] [[ColdBloodedTorture he doesn't]] [[KarmicDeath get away with it.]]

* PowersDoTheFighting: He relied almost entirely on the "heroic spirits" to do battle during the attack on Wildart city. When Basara got close enough to attack him directly, he didn't stand a chance.

* TooDumbToLive: It's not very wise to blow up the entire realm and taunt Basara that soon.

* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Through the use of numerous disposable pawns, scapegoats, and hefty doses of PlausibleDeniability, not to mention coasting on his war accomplishments during the Great War 15 in-universe years ago, the general public looks upon him like a saint, at least until his death fully exposed his, and the Demon Counci's evil deeds, at which point his good reputation was dead and buried without funeral or tombstone.

* DirtyCoward: When [[spoiler:Basara destroys Chaos]], he decides to destroy the whole town to ensure the council's victory. Unfortunately for them, [[spoiler:he gets a KarmicDeath at the hands of Liala]].

* KarmicDeath: He is killed [[spoiler:by the sister of the very same demon lord they tried to have killed, and whom he'd abused]].

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Using Chaos to attack Leohart, Basara, and Mio, letting the "Heroic Spirits" that were summoned by him run rampant in the demon realm, and then trying to blow up the city to hide the council's embarrassment gave Basara a much needed major boost in his legitimacy as the rightful owner of the power Mio inherited from Wilbert, not to mention Mio herself, and directed the vast majority of the resentment of both the Demon Lord and Moderate factions right where it belongs, on the council faction, and all the subordinates therein.

* PowersDoTheFighting: Subverted. While he is quite strong and agile, he relies almost entirely on Byakko's special abilities to fight.

* SpannerInTheWorks: He is the one who [[spoiler:killed Belphegor to expose the Demon Council's evil deeds during his battle with Leohart]].

* WeUsedToBeFriends: How he views Basara when they meet again five years after the Brynhildr incident.

* TheNeedsOfTheMany: Ramsus rationalizes that he plans to extract Mio's for the sake of the demon realm's peace despite her being an ally to Basara. After seeing Mio take to the front lines and risk herself for the people, he reconsiders.

* BlondeGuysAreEvil: Well, maybe not evil, but certainly highly antagonistic. He goes out of his way to cause trouble wherever he goes.
