Rewatching the film recently made me notice that Eric is pretty immediately into Ariel not long after running into, even as he doesn't know she saved him. The way he looks at her dreamily in the dinner scene is very clear on some level he was hit by this trope.
Added DiffLines:
* LoveAtFirstSight: Played with, as said first sight was marred by him being barely conscious and with the sun in his eyes, but Eric immediately feels like him and Ariel have met based only on how she looks very familiar to him. His first reaction is actually him correctly guessing she saved him, but her current muteness makes him doubt it. He still finds himself smitten with her right from the beginning and it doesn't take long for him find himself fully falling in love with her.
