to:

* AntiVillain: He has a very good reason for resenting all parties involved in the Hundred Day War. He fits all four types, really:
** Type I: He willingly carries out the destruction of Ravennue Village, but he holds back to minimize the damage. He could have slaughtered the entire population if he tried, but didn't.
** Type II: Life has ''not'' been easy for him. Even battle-hardened General Morgan says that Loewe has "stared into the pits of Gehenna with his own two eyes".
** Type III: Genuinely believes the Aureole is the only thing capable of saving mankind from continually hiding from reality and destroying themselves. Joshua convinces him otherwise.
** Type IV: The only really "evil" things he does are attack Ravennue Village and shoot down the Arseille. Once he runs out of reasons to support Ouroboros he pulls a [[HeelFaceTurn Heel-Face Turn]] immediately.

!Estelle Bright
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/est_8574.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkemiKanda (Japanese), Creator/StephanieSheh (game), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (anime) (English)

The cheerful heroine of Trails in the Sky. A newbie Bracer, and the daughter of the legendary adventurer Cassius Bright. Uses a quarterstaff in combat.
----
* ActionGirl: Almost the ''quintessential'' Action Girl. Estelle doesn't think twice about throwing herself into danger, especially if it's to help another. She ultimately manages to be far more of a badass than any of the male cast members. She's capable of fighting everything from wolves to giant lizards to army officers to ''robots the size of buildings''. None of this holds her back.
* AllLovingHero: Her bright personality and kind demeanor play a huge factor in Joshua and [[spoiler:Renne's]] redemption. There is a reason why her nickname in-universe is something akin to lightbringer.
* AllWomenLoveShoes: A unique twist in that because she's a {{tomboy}}, she's a big fan of athletic sneakers.
* BadassAdorable
* BattleCouple: With Joshua.
* BookDumb
* BugCatching: One of her hobbies as a little girl was collecting insects (especially [[BeetleManiac beetles]]) and she had a habit of forgetting that not everybody shared her passion. Joshua for example.
* ChewingTheScenery: Estelle has an... exuberant personality and lets everyone around her know it. She also tries to encourage Joshua to do the same. She even gets a special super-sized version of the normal font for when she's in scenery-chewing mode.
* CrushBlush: Rather susceptible to this whenever Joshua is brought up in a romantic context. It gets more frequent as the First Chapter goes on.
* DeadpanSnarker: especially regarding Olivier's antics.
* EnforcedMethodActing: [[spoiler:Plays out the part of the shocked girl perfectly because nobody bothered to tell her what was likely to happen when Weissmann encountered Joshua again in SC.]]
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: She inherited her father's staff fighting style which is based on this concept.
** In a specific sense, her ''Taikyokurin'' S-Craft on multiple levels. First, she spins fast enough to create a whirlwind around herself as she charges the enemy, then she spins around her victim at high speed, creating a whirling vortex of energy around the target as she [[SpamAttack repeatedly pummels it from all angles.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Although she doesn't have that much patience when dealing with children like [[BrattyHalfPint Luke and Clem]], she's otherwise pretty good with them, as shown when she cheers up up a boy whose testimony regarding Sky Bandits was ignored by the Royal Army. Comes up again in her reappearance in Zero where she can sometimes be found playing with the children at Crossbell Cathedral.
* GenkiGirl: ''Mother of God.'' Her Genki Power could light entire cities. It seems like ''nothing'' can put a dent in her can-do, optimistic attitude. [[spoiler:Even the revelation that Joshua is an agent of Ouroboros only tempers her resolve to help him.]]
* GirlishPigtails
* HairIntakes: Her hairstyle resembles cat ears.
* HopeBringer: One of Estelle's defining traits. She firmly believes that everyone working together can overcome any obstacle no matter how dark the situation appears, and she can make everyone else believe it too. This is why Joshua and Kevin both liken her to the sun. It's also why [[spoiler:she is immune to the corruption of the Ring of Judgment, not because she has no guilt for it to feed on but because she can take it and turn it into something positive]]. She gets to demonstrate this ability shortly afterwards when [[spoiler:the information Ein gave them on Renne turned out to be virtually useless but Estelle still spun it into a positive anyways.]]
** If Estelle is your main character in [[IntercontinuityCrossover Alternative Saga]] she plays this role during the climax, as the power of her hope (buoyed by everyone else) is what weakens Galsis enough for the party to defeat him.
* IdiotHair: She has a small cowlick that stands atop her head and she isn't very smart.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: [[spoiler:Discussed (and dismissed) as an explanation for why the eponymous Ring of Judgment had no effect on her. Estelle has guilt just like everyone and the ring could feed off that, it was her [[ThePollyanna ability to turn even her deepest sorrows into hope]] that protected her]]
* InformedFlaw: Her being a LethalChef. Only once do we see her cook (in FC) and Joshua and Cassius think it wasn't that bad. Optionally, we see her cook via the Recipe Book and the stuff is ''at least'' edible. Well, no one complains.
* JackOfAllStats: She's a perfectly balanced character, and since her orbment affinity is not restricted to certain element, she can be customized as the player sees fit.
* TheKirk: Oh yeah.
* LethalChef: To the surprise of few, the dismay of Joshua and Cassius, and the peril of the Bright family curtains. However, once you gain the Recipe Book she starts on her way to becoming a SupremeChef, instead. This actually gets mentioned in SC.
* NotBloodSiblings: She and her adopted brother Joshua are the OfficialCouple of the series.
* ObliviousToLove: For most of FC, she is completely oblivious to the fact that she's in love with Joshua, her attempts to rationalize it as a big sister instinct notwithstanding. Pretty much [[EveryoneCanSeeIt everyone they meet]] forces Estelle to confront her feelings by one method or another, until the epilogue when it finally clicks for her.
* {{Otaku}}: Of sneakers, of all things.
* [[OverrankedSoldier Overranked Bracer]]: She's a teenager who starts her career as a Junior Bracer in the prologue of FC. By the end of SC, which is maybe a year later, she's moved up to be one of the top fifty ''Senior'' Bracers on the continent. Top twenty if all sidequests are done perfectly. And despite this she is ''still'' OvershadowedByAwesome, as her dad is one of the top ''four''.
* PluckyGirl: Not so much in FC, but in SC, no matter how many horrors and tragedies she witnesses (and there are a ''[[DarkerAndEdgier lot]]''), she never loses hope.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Joshua.
* SimpleStaff: Wields a Bo staff. Despite her choice of weapon, Estelle is most definitely ''not'' the WhiteMagicianGirl of the party; she uses the weapon to pummel enemies into submission.
* StraightMan: Often ends up playing the straight man to the relative zaniness of the rest of the cast. Her "[[FlatWhat 'what' face]]" is a [[http://www.siliconera.com/postgallery/?p_gal=117934 rather]] [[http://www.siliconera.com/postgallery/?p_gal=118885 common]] sight in dialogue boxes.
--> '''Estelle''':Is that... a penguin? (An evil penguin?)
* SpamAttack: A favorite of Estelle; all of her S-Crafts involve this to some extent [[spoiler:until she learns Cassius' ''Houou Reppa'' in Zero at least.]] Her first two attacks involve a rapid series of attacks from a standing position while ''Taikyokurin'' involves attacks from multiple angles as well.
* StellarName: Literally and it fits her personality very well. Joshua calls her 'his sun' at one point and Kevin eventually starts calling her 'Sun Girl'. Her strongest weapon in The 3rd is even called Soleil.
* {{Tomboy}}: Pursues a tomboy appearance almost aggressively. She doesn't have a lot of time for or truck with feminine frippery. Kloe and Schera occasionally call her out on trying a little too hard on this.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:By her appearance in Zero, she has mastered one of Cassius' Crafts and his S-Craft ''Houou Reppa''. She may not have surpassed him yet but she's making a good effort]]. In addition to becoming physically more badass, her talents in investigation have improved as well, overcoming her initial BookDumb nature.
* UnusualEuphemism: Holy Stregas!
** To elaborate, Stregas is her favorite ''sports shoe brand''.
* WeaponTwirling: She ''really'' loves to spin her staff.
** SpinAttack: One of her Crafts involve spinning around and damaging the enemies in the area.
** SpinToDeflectStuff: How she deflects the bullets fired by [[spoiler:Mayor Dalmore]] in Chapter 2.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Her outfit from SC onward.

!Joshua Bright[[spoiler:/Astray]]
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jos_4741.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MitsukiSaiga (Japanese), Creator/JohnnyYongBosch (game), Creator/BlakeShepard (anime) (English)

Estelle's adopted brother and partner in adventure. Uses twin blades.
----
* BattleCouple: With Estelle.
* {{Bishonen}}: To the point where, when dressed as a girl, he gets referred to as "beautiful."
* [[spoiler:BrainwashedAndCrazy: Weissmann's manipulation of Joshua, first turning an empty shell of a boy into a heartless assassin, then turning him into TheMole]].
* ChickMagnet: To Estelle's never-ending despair.
* DeadpanSnarker: Sometimes, and he still manages to be very sweet about it too.
* DeathGlare: ''It's one of his crafts.''
* DisguisedInDrag: [[spoiler: In order to infiltrate restricted areas of the castle, he dresses up as a maid.]]
* DoppelgangerAttack: His final S-Craft, Phantom Raid.
* DualWielding: He does this despite not really knowing ''why'' he's so good at it.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Poor Joshua often gets accused of this by fans (and occasionally in-character). At the very least, he's a ''very'' [[{{Bishounen}} effete dude]]. That his Japanese VA is a woman doesn't help matters much. [[spoiler:This ''visually'' fades a fair bit in SC and beyond, when he embraces his past and his abilities to various degrees.]]
** This is so bad that he gets crossdressed twice in FC, and both times, he makes the girls in attendance jealous with "his" looks.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Joshua's eyes look rather like this when using his S-Crafts in FC, oddly enough. [[spoiler:It's your first flagrant hint that something is ''wrong'' with the boy.]] SC plays around with this - [[spoiler:In the game's first half, this becomes the ''default'' state of his eyes as he's embraced his "inner nature" as a a ruthless assassin; however, once Estelle quite literally "hugs the emo" out of him, they go away and never return.]]
* FlashStep: A whole ''bunch'' of his Crafts and S-Crafts hinge on his ability to do this; it gives him some of the most devastating abilities in the game(s).
* FriendToAllChildren: A straighter example than Estelle.
* TheHeart: At the start of the story, he's very much this, a gentle young man who wants to see and encourage the best in people. [[spoiler:This makes the reveal about his past all the more crushing, especially to him.]]
* HeroicWillpower: [[spoiler:It [[SubvertedTrope may not have helped him resist Weissmann's mind control]] but it ''was'' enough that when the Ring of Judgment tried to force him to face his sins, he was able to resist falling under its spell long enough to let go of the thing.]]
* [[spoiler:ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: Why Joshua leaves at the end of FC, coupled with the fear that he could be as big a danger to Estelle as Ouroboros.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: He's pretty fuzzy on the details of his life before he came to live with the Brights... and he's not too fond of talking about the details he DOES remember. [[spoiler:This turns out to be a combination of MoreThanMindControl and TraumaInducedAmnesia, as he desperately wanted to forget the horrors of Hamel... which was ruthlessly exploited by Weissman.]]
* [[spoiler:MarkOfTheBeast: Remember Joshua's tattoo? Remember how it only appeared after Weissmann restored his memories? Yeah, that's not actually a tattoo...]]
* NotBloodSiblings: He is in love with his adopted sister Estelle.
* RedBaron: [[spoiler: The Black Fang.]]
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Estelle.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: In SC [[spoiler:and during his days as Black Fang.]]
* TeachHimAnger: [[spoiler:Weissmann effectively did this when Joshua was still a child, turning him into a cold-blooded killing machine and the perfect spy.]]
* [[spoiler:TomatoInTheMirror: Joshua remembered being part of Ouroboros (to an extent) but he didn't remember all the details of his past and he certainly didn't know he was being used as TheMole until Weissman restored his memory. Joshua didn't take it well.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Twice. First [[spoiler:when Weissmann restores his sealed memories, Joshua finds all his old skill retuning to him, with the result that he is faster and stronger than before.]] Second [[spoiler:like Estelle he takes a level between The 3rd and his appearance in Zero, having mastered one of Cassius' Crafts in the interim and forming one hell of a problem-solving team with Estelle.]]
* [[spoiler:TheMole: Weissmann sent Joshua after Cassius knowing he would fail, all to set him up as an unwitting spy.]]
* [[spoiler:UsedToBeASweetKid: Not seen much in the series but ''heavily'' emphasized in the audio dramas and the first chapter of Loewe Monogatari, where we see what he was like before the Hamel Tragedy.]]
* [[spoiler:WhatHaveIBecome: A bit more like "What Have I Always Been", but the trope certainly applies at the end of FC. SC is, basically, about dealing with this.]]

!Scherazard Harvey
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sch_498.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YukoShioyama (Japanese), Creator/MichelleRuff (game), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (anime) (English)

An experienced Bracer and an older sister figure to Estelle and Joshua.
----
* TheAlcoholic: Schera loves her drinking, and practically forces others at whip-point to join in.
* BareYourMidriff and ShowSomeLeg: Her outfits.
* [[BigDamnHeroes Big Damn Heroine]]: During the rescue mission in the final chapter of FC.
* BraidsOfAction: Her long braid [[spoiler:which she cuts after the events of SC.]]
* BlowYouAway and ShockAndAwe: Her orbment affinity.
* CircusBrat: She grew up in the Harvey Troupe which she took her name from [[spoiler:after first growing up on the streets.]]
* CoolBigSis
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:The reason she [[DrowningMySorrows drinks so heavily.]] She grew up homeless in a slum and never knew her parents. She was taken in by a traveling circus and learned everything she knows from its members, particularly her CoolBigSis figure. Then her new life fell apart when the manager died, her big sister figure deserted her with barely a word and she had nowhere to go.]]
* [[DarkSkinnedBlonde Dark-skinned]] [[WhiteHairedPrettyGirl Silver-haired pretty-girl]]
* DeathDealer: One of her S-Crafts, Judgement Card.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Scherazard has no qualms about using her looks to manipulate people. Her VictoryPose even plays on this.
* {{Dominatrix}}: She definitely has shades of this. One of her Crafts is called "Sadist Whip", which she precedes with "Someone's been naughty." Olivier comments that some masochist somewhere is dying to meet her, to which she offers to let him meet her whip.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She ''really'' likes her booze. [[spoiler:And not just because she likes drinking, either.]]
* [[spoiler:IDidWhatIHadToDo: Survived in the slums by any means necessary. Her backstory doesn't get as dark as some characters but she does mention eating garbage to survive]]
* ImportantHaircut: Adopts a short style after the events of SC. When asked about it, she simply says that a lot of things have happened recently.
* NonSpecificallyForeign: Scherazard's country of origin is unknown to the player, though not to her.
* [[spoiler:ParentalAbandonment: She was an unwanted child dumped in a slum.]]
* RazorWind: Used in her Sylphen Whip skill.
* {{Roma}}: Schera embodies some of the usual stereotypes, including being a [[TarotMotifs Tarot-reading]] FortuneTeller on the side and at one point in her life she was a nomad. One of her weapons in The 3rd is Zigeuner, German for, well, Gypsy and a non-exclusive bit of armor she can equip is called Gypsy Queen. She's not actually one in the sense of belonging to a distinct ethnic group (her appearance being entirely independent of her skills, personality and wandering past) but she does tick off a lot of the usual elements nonetheless.
** HotGypsyWoman: Naturally. Dark skin, [[ShowSomeLeg very]] [[BareYourMidriff revealing]] [[FootFocus outfit]] relative to most of the cast, generally exotic-looking clothes and no problems exploiting her looks to manipulate people...
* RedBaron: The Silver Streak.
* SpamAttack: Sadist Whip
* [[spoiler:StrangerInAStrangeLand: Becomes one of these when the Harvey Circus disintigrates. She winds up in Liberl for a lack of anywhere else to go since she at least sort of knew some people there]]
* StreetUrchin: [[spoiler: Before she became part of the Harvey troupe, she was an orphan living alone on the streets.]]
* TarotMotifs: She reads them and occasionally does readings for the characters or herself. Unsurprisingly these tend to be [[{{Foreshadowing}} significant.]] [[spoiler:As with most of her skills, she learned it from Lucciola]]
* WhipItGood: Schera can sometimes be very enthusiastic about that whip...

Estelle's father, [[spoiler:and a former member of the Liberl Army]]
----
* TheAce
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He is this to Estelle, to the point of becoming a RunningGag.
* AssassinOutclassin: [[spoiler:Ouroboros sent an assassin to kill him. Cassius handily beat the assassin ''and his backup'', then [[RefugeInAudacity adopted the assassin.]] Granted, this was all part of [[BatmanGambit Weissmann's plan]] but it says something that nobody has since tried to have Cassius assassinated even though he's only become a more tempting target since then.]]
* BroughtDownToBadass: He was a MasterSwordsman before switching to a Bo Staff, requiring him to learn a whole new martial arts style. He's still one of the best fighters on the continent.
* TheChessmaster - Even though he means well, he can get very manipulative at times.
* [[spoiler:ColonelBadass: Retired Colonel, anyway. At the end of FC he rejoins the Army]].
** [[spoiler:FourStarBadass: Upon rejoining the Army, he is promptly promoted to ''Chief of Staff''.]]
* DeusExitMachina: [[spoiler:Ouroboros caused an international incident for the sole purpose of removing Cassius from Liberl because [[MemeticBadass just like everyone else in universe]] they believed that if he was present he could have singlehandedly thwarted their plans. In SC he does this to himself, as part of an elaborate BatmanGambit to trick Weissmann (knowing he would fixate on him) and allow everyone else to take him out]]
* [[spoiler:FailureKnight: How he sees himself. After his plan turned the tide of the Hundred Days War, Erebonian forces launched a last spiteful attack on Rolent in which Lena was killed. Cassius has never forgiven himself for not being able to protect her.]]
* FantasticFightingStyle: He invented his own, ''[[EverythingsBetterWithSpinning Mu ni shite Rasen]]'', incorporating elements of the style he used to use when he carried a sword. As a Hachiyou Ittou practitioner Cassius specialized in the currently unnumbered form ''Rasen''[[note]]Spiral[[/note]].
* GeniusBruiser: He combines an almost unparalleled level of martial skill with a borderline-precognitive grasp of tactics.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: An entire story was ''created'' for him to be the hero of in order to keep him from becoming a SpannerInTheWorks to [[spoiler:Weissmann's plans.]]
** ZeroNoKiseki gives us another example of this. [[spoiler:He was one of the leaders in the operation to supress the D∴G Cult]] a fact [[{{Foreshadowing}} alluded to in the very first game.]]
* HyperAwareness: It's implied that Cassius is so powerful in a fight because he doesn't miss ''anything''.
* LivingLegend: Virtually everyone on the continent knows who he is and gushes constantly about him (much to Estelle's annoyance).
* MasterSwordsman: He holds the title Grand Chevalier/Divine Blade (''Kensei'' aka Master Swordsman in Japanese) and is said to have been the finest swordsman in Liberl until he put aside his sword and took up the [[SimpleStaff staff.]] Only four other people on the continent possess this title.
* MemeticBadass - InUniverse. During the tournament at Grancel, Anelace comments that if he and [[MightyGlacier Zane]] were to team up they would probably be disqualified for ''cheating''. As events will show, this is not exaggeration. [[spoiler:The BigBad of FC believed that him staying in the Army would have been a deterrent to foreign invasion equivalent to ''militarizing the entire country'']].
** Weaponized in SC [[spoiler:knowing that Weissmann would be paying close attention to everything he did, he basically acted as a massive decoy so everyone else could maneuver and ultimately catch Weissmann, while making sure behind the scenes that everything got pulled off properly]]
* MyGreatestFailure: Cassius's failure to [[spoiler: [[TheLostLenore save his wife, Lena,]] during the hundred days war]] completely reshaped his philosophy on life, right down to the weapon he used, and led him to take up the path of the bracer.
* NotSoDifferent: Estelle is more like her father than she's willing to admit at first.
* RedBaron: The Divine Blade, though later games imply that this title is not held by him alone, but is granted by everyone who has mastered one of the forms of the Hachiyou Ittou style (Not that there are many of those).
* SimpleStaff: After putting away his sword, he took up the staff. This in no way makes him less badass than he was previously. [[spoiler:He didn't get to be one of only four S-Ranked Bracers on the continent for nothing and he's able to use some of his old Hachiyou Ittou techniques despite the change in weapon]]
* StoryBreakerPower: He's viewed as having this in-universe to the point that large chunks of the plot of the first two games revolve around [[spoiler:the villains keeping him either too busy or ''in another country'' so he can't interfere with their plans, a fact which he exploits in SC.]]
** He's also physically powerful enough to [[spoiler:demolish [[HumongousMecha Reverie]] in a matter of seconds with no apparent effort, this being the boss that your party fought twice and couldn't beat.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity
* TheStrategist: Colonel Cassius Bright was the brains behind the operation that saved Liberl from defeat in the Hundred Days War, though characters who don't put him on a pedestal are quick to acknowledge that it was the work of many people together that made it possible [[spoiler:a fact that Estelle uses in her KirkSummation to Colonel Richard at the end of FC.]]
** WordOfGod states that Cassius' problem-solving and tactical abilities far outstrip that of some of the franchises other memetic badassses, so while he's not quite as good at fighting ([[RetiredBadass anymore]]), he's 'stronger' in an overall sense.

----
* {{BFS}}
* ButtMonkey: He is teased a lot for his relationship with Tita. In case of [[OverprotectiveDad Tita's]] [[MyBelovedSmother parents]], it can get more than just teasing.
* CastFromHitPoints: Wild Rage and its enhanced form sacrifice a percentage of Agate's HP (based on the maximum, not the current) in return for CP.
* [[spoiler:CynicismCatalyst: He lost his sister during the 100 days war. This led to strong resentment towards the army.]]
* DeathFromAbove: His final S-Craft, Dragon Dive.
* [[spoiler:DrillSergeantNasty: When he trains the Ravens to become Bracers]]
* FieryRedhead: He's quite HotBlooded.
* KnightInSourArmor: Less so to Tita, but to everyone else, he starts out pretty grouchy. [[spoiler:His reasons for this aren't so far out there, either.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* {{Lolicon}}: To Tita. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt The rest of party agrees.]]
** [[spoiler:ReplacementGoldfish: He sees his dead little sister in her even though Tita may harbor deeper feelings. In one of the Drama [=CDs=], he actually starts thinking about how he should treat her.]]
* RedBaron: Heavy Blade Agate.
* SpamAttack: His first S-Craft Beatdown [[note]]Dynast Gale in Japanese[[/note]]
** Also, Agate's play style boils down to abusing [[CastFromHitPoints Wild Rage]] and spamming Crafts like there's no tomorrow.
* [[spoiler:SurvivorGuilt: He survived the Hundred Days War. His little sister didn't.]]
* SwordBeam: Draguna Edge and his second S-Craft Final Break.
* TheyCallHimSword: His nickname among Bracers is the Heavy Blade, which is what he calls his [[{{BFS}} large sword]].
* [[spoiler:TragicKeepsake: His stone pendant was made by his little sister as a birthday present, shortly before her death during the Hundred Day War]]

A calm and reliable Bracer from the Republic of Calvard. An expert in martial arts.
----
* TheBigGuy: Shares this role with Agate.
* ChivalrousPervert
* GeniusBruiser: He did not gain the A rank in the Bracer's Guild with just brawns.
* GentleGiant: While he still loves things like martial arts tournaments, he's disarmingly friendly and sincere to everyone else. It isn't even an act, either - he's just a nice guy!
* KamehameHadoken: His Aura Blast S-Craft, which is his strongest move in the first game. It gets outclassed later on.
* KiAttacks: His S-Craft Aura Blast. In cutscenes we sometimes see him using smaller-scale versions of it though he doesn't have any lesser Crafts with the effect in gameplay.
* MightyGlacier: It's right there in his nickname. He has exceptional STR but he's pretty slow. Distend makes him even better and in later games it buffs his STR by a whopping 60%, making him hit harder than almost anyone. Combine it and Clock Up EX and he can temporarly become a LightningBruiser.
* PlayingDrunk: Via breath control he fakes the appearance of being very drunk in order to distract [[spoiler:Kanone and allay her suspicions when she comes across Estelle and Joshua in Grancel Castle and wonders where they've been.]] Joshua sees through it and afterwards compliments Zane on his technique.
* TheNotSecret: Estelle and Joshua try to keep their real motivations for wanting to get to Grancel Castle hidden because they don't want to burden Zane with their problems. As it turns out, they needn't have bothered because he knew about them before he even met them in Zeiss and figured out their real objective beforehand. In fact, his real reason for being in Liberl is that Cassius asked him to help his kids out, using the tournament as a handy excuse. Learning this solves one quandary, though Estelle is still irked that her 'delinquent dad' is five steps ahead of her ''again''.
* RedBaron: Zane the Immovable.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: In Japan, his first name is Zin.

!Kurt Nardin

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

* BadBadActing: He disguises himself as a Jaeger for a surprise training drill, but he's so over-the-top about it and he still uses his signature crafts, making the disguise fairly obvious. Despite that, he's never found out until after the drill is over because [[IdiotHero Estelle and Anelace]] are the only ones taking the drill.
* {{Badass}}: He's one of only twenty or so A-Rank Bracers and the only one permanently stationed in Liberl.
* BadassCrew: 'Team Kurt', especially in SC.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Weissmann brainwashes him to remove his memory of the incident where he obtained the Gospel and later to lure Estelle and company into a trap]]
* BladeOnAStick: His long spear ''[[NamedWeapons Fuujin Raijin]]''.
* BoltOfDivineRetribution: The ultimate effect of his S-Craft ''Raijin Shourai'' is to invoke this.
* GuestStarPartyMember: He's playable only once in the series, in a hidden quest in SC [[spoiler:where he helps liberate Jenis from Ouroboros' control]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: In SC
* InterfaceSpoiler: In the English translation only. Kurt is one of the few NPCs in FC to have voice acting, even when two of his fellow bracers did not; this is an early tipoff that he's going to be PromotedToPlayable in the sequel.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Lost his memory of the mission involving [[spoiler:the Black Orbment]].
* TheLeader: He leads an unofficial team of four Bracers, first in the Grancel Tournament and later in SC.
* MagicByAnyOtherName: His Methodism techniques (which give rise to his Bracer nickname) are the result of a great deal of study and some of them produce effects very similar to Orbal Arts.
* [[SwordPlant Spear Plant]] His S-Craft has him perform one of these before calling lightning down on the spear.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Green Hair]]

You know, the same style [[GodModeSue Cassius]] used and [[MasterSwordsman Arios]] uses. When she gets serious, much ass is kicked.
* [[spoiler:BrainwashedAndCrazy: During SC, she is briefly mind-controlled by Weissmann. ]]
* BladeSpam: Eight-Leaf Blitz

* GenkiGirl: If there is anyone in the trilogy who can even hope to compete with Estelle, it's her.
* GuestStarPartyMember: In SC, she becomes one but in the 3rd, she becomes a permanent party member.
* InterfaceSpoiler: In the English translation only. Like Kurt, Aneleace has voice acting even though her companions don't. Sure enough, she's PromotedToPlayable in the sequels.
* LightningBruiser: Normally she's closer to the JackOfAllStats but when given her exclusive sword in The 3rd [[DiscOneNuke which boosts all her stats tremendously]] she becomes this. Winning its upgrade sends her through the roof.
* SweetTooth: She likes ice cream, enough that it's even part of her profile picture on The 3rd's website.
* SwordBeam: Her ''Kenfuusen'' Craft and ''Kouhazan'' S-Craft, which creates overlapping ''explosive'' sword beams at higher levels.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She has a great deal more respect for Cassius than his own daughter does, in part because of the whole S-Rank Bracer thing and in part because [[spoiler:he also studied the sword under her grandfather.]] She seizes the opportunity to meet with him when it arises.

----
* MarriedToTheJob: More-so than any other mayor in the game and to the point where even random townsfolk are worried she's working herself to exhaustion. She is also not above scolding Maybelle for skipping out on church service or otherwise indulging her workaholic tendencies, much to Maybelle's consternation. * {{Bokukko}}: Estelle even calls her this in lieu of her name in the original Japanese.
* ButtMonkey: Poor Josette. She's the HopelessSuitor who has trouble acknowledging that she never stood a chance or that even without Estelle, there's still someone else closer to Joshua than she is. Then there's her [[ImpoverishedPatrician whole backstory]] which she hasn't dealt with all that well.
* DontYouDarePityMe
* EleventhHourRanger: In SC. She becomes a full party member in The 3rd.
* FallenPrincess: Her family was once counted among the Erebonian aristocracy before their fortunes were lost in a bad business deal. Josette didn't take it well. In a bit of FridgeBrilliance overlaping a bit with TearJerker, this explains why she was so easily able to fool everyone in Rolent. Pretending to be a student at the prestigious school was as close as she's ever been to the girl she once was.
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Her relationship with Joshua. It takes her longer to accept than it did Kloe.

* ImpoverishedPatrician: The Capuas used to be minor Erebonian nobility until they fell so deeply in dept that their creditors seized their ancestral lands - at which point the Emperor stripped them of their noble status.
* MasterOfNone: Statistically one of the worst characters in The 3rd across the board, even underperforming when compared to the DumpStat of some highly-specialized characters. Her one real point of value is her extremely useful Remote Ability which increases the Sepith and item drop percentages... and that rewards you for ''not'' having her in your party.
* NiceHat: She sports a visor in The 3rd and blushes when Joshua tells her it looks good on her.

A student at the prestigious Jenis Royal Academy. Kind, determined and quite skilled with a rapier.
----
* ActualPacifist: She ''abhors'' violence, especially against other human beings. She even first joins the party as a noncombatant who you can't control; she'll heal you fairly regularly, but that's it.
** ReluctantWarrior: Unfortunately for her, the darkening tone of the story in the last act of FC and throughout SC doesn't allow for much in the way of dedicated pacifism, and she's forced to take up arms.
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler: Part of the plot in FC was to remove her from the political playing field by marrying her off to Prince Olivert Reise Arnor of Erebonia. Said arrangement fell apart when the coup did, and Kloe didn't find out about it until Olivier told her the first time they end up meeting as members of their respective royal houses rather than as traveling companions.]]
* [[spoiler:BadassPrincess: Once she accepts ''being'' a princess.]]
* BerserkButton: Insulting Mercia Orphanage and especially the children is a really bad idea. This kind girl will verbally tear you a new one and [[BewareTheNiceOnes Aidios help you]] if you ''threaten'' them in any way. Clem being put in danger is what caused Kloe to drop her ActualPacifist stance in the first place [[spoiler:and she's willing to risk blowing her cover to ensure that the Orphanage stays safe and the guilty party is brought to justice.]] She also once blew up at her best friend because of an offhand comment about the orphans.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kloe is a very kind girl who would rather solve problems with words than with violence whenever possible. However, for the love of all that is holy do ''not'' threaten the kids at Mercia Orphanage in any way. [[spoiler:She can and will mobilize the Royal Guards to tear you a new one.]] Also, she's the best fencer at Jenis and her talent is entirely applicable to actual combat.
* BoyishShortHair: Has the shortest hair of any female character aside from Julia, which is kind of funny since she's the [[TomboyAndGirlyGirl girly girl]] side of the equation to the ''agressively'' tomboyish and long-haired Estelle. [[spoiler:It's partly done because she can get away with it at Jenis as part of her disguise, which she couldn't do back in Grancel. When Colonel Richard stuffs her into a dress, she gets a hairpiece to make her look more like a 'proper' princess. She ultimately keeps the short hair after finally accepting her position in SC.]]
* TheChick: The nearest thing the party has to one.
* CombatMedic: Her three Water-aligned Slots and first S-Craft mean that she's naturally great at healing and recovery but her huge EP pool and high ATS mean that she's also capable of dishing out extreme magical hurt, especially in later games when you get more Slots and advanced Quartz so she can access really powerful Arts despite her Slot restrictions.
* CoolSword[=/=][[spoiler:RoyalRapier]]
* [[spoiler:EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses]]: [[spoiler:She actually ''tries'' to subvert this, as she doesn't want anyone to know that she's the heir to the entire Kingdom of Liberl, and doesn't even want the responsibility ''anyway''. She much prefers hanging out with Estelle and co. and doing what she considers real, demonstrable good.]]
* HeavenlyBlue: Toyed with a bit. She has blue hair and wears blue, was the Blue Knight in the school play and one of her strongest weapons is called the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Celeste Blue.]] She also calls on divine power in her final S-Craft [[spoiler:and is descended from [[MeaningfulName Celeste D. * HolyHandGrenade: Sanctus Nova calls on Eidos to smite enemies with holy light. It became considerably more powerful between SC and The 3rd when it went from being STR-based (where Kloe is weak) to ATS-based (where she excels), making it one of the most powerful attacks in the game.
* HopelessSuitor: In SC, she reveals [[spoiler: to Estelle that she was attracted to Joshua. However, she seemed to quickly realise that his heart already belonged to Estelle and didn't try to press matters.]]
* IdenticalAncestor: When telling a computer on the Liber Ark that she's [[spoiler:Celeste D. Auslese]], the computer declares that she's a 73% match and accepts her, despite the fact that the ancestor who's name she borrowed lived twelve centuries (forty to fifty generations) ago.
* LadyOfWar: She's the [[TheChick chick]] yet still the finest fencer in Jenis Royal Academy.
* Leitmotif: 'Royal Capital of Grancel' might as well be hers, since her image song Always On My Mind is an arrangement of it and it's associated with both Jenis and Grancel, the two locations that Kloe is strongly associated with.
* NobleBirdOfPrey: Her falcon Zieg can fly at twice the speed of an airship, which is very useful for delivering messages.
* PimpedOutDress: [[spoiler:Wears one on certain formal occasions in her role as Crown Princess]]
* [[spoiler:PoliticallyActivePrincess: What she becomes late in SC when she finally accepts her role as Crown Princess. She represents Liberl at home and abroad and tries to solve problems diplomatically but she's not afraid to fight for her country or her beliefs when needed.]]

* [[spoiler:RoyalBlood: Played with. This is because the person who founded the royal line was also the person who sealed Aureole away 1200 years ago. The Ark's computers recognize her as a descendant of Celeste and assume she's authorized to be there.]]
* [[spoiler: RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething]]
* ShipTease: Quite a few moments with Joshua thorough FC and SC. The Third, however, drops a massive one with [[spoiler:Lechter]]. How big? One of them even eats half of screentime in a door dedicated for [[spoiler:'''''OLIVIER AND MUELLER''''']]. And there's more in [[VideoGame/ZeroNoKiseki Ao no Kiseki]]!
* ShipSinking: For all the ShipTease she has with Joshua, she fully recognizes that he and Estelle are in love and gracefully steps aside, after a heart to heart talk.
* SpotOfTea: While it isn't her default solution to problems, whenever it's available she'll suggest sitting down for a nice cup while everyone talks things over. She also does this for pleasure, inviting Julia to join her on her day off.
* SupremeChef: Seems to be a good baker, if the children in the orphanage is to be believed.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Plays the ''extreme'' girly-girl to Estelle's equally-extreme tomboy.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: The extreme slant toward water in her orbment means she will inevitably have extremely powerful healing spells ''and'' she has one of the deepest EP pools of the entire cast, her first S-Craft is a healing/revive thing instead of a damage ability, natch, she is a [[ActualPacifist real pacifist]] at first before fate [[ReluctantWarrior forces her to fight]], and she crushes on Joshua like, well, [[IncrediblyLamePun a schoolgirl]].
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]

!Jill Liedner

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The President of the Student Council at Jenis and Kloe's best friend and roommate.
----

* EvilGenius: Self-described.
* {{Meganekko}}: Overlaps with ScaryShinyGlasses on occasion.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:She knows Kloe is a princess]]
* StudentCouncilPresident: She's the president, having inherited the position from slack-happy Lechter. She takes it seriously but isn't above [[ItAmusedMe having some fun with her authority]] either.
* YaoiFangirl: She displays an unhealthy fixation on seeing Joshua in his princess dress whenever she gets the chance.

!Lechter Arundel

->'''Introduced in:''' The 3rd

The President of the Student Council during Kloe's first year at Jenis. For tropes relating to him, see [[spoiler:[[Characters/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteel The Iron Breed]]]]

[[folder:Factory City of Zeiss]]

!Tita Russell
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tit_4843.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiromiKonno (Japanese), Creator/HilaryHaag (anime) (English)

A cheerful and optimistic mechanic from the town of Zeiss. Uses a variety of guns. Her grandfather is a famous scientist.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Her father is a nice and reasonable guy. Her mother on the other hand...
* ChildProdigy
* TheCutie: Just ask [[ImTakingHerHomeWithMe Estelle and Anelace]].
* GadgeteerGenius: She knows Orbal technology like the back of her hand and can jury-rig a solution to just about any problem on short notice. Her first major on-screen project at ZCF involves the construction of [[MiniMecha the Orbal Gear]].
* GatlingGood: Her Cannon Impulse S-Craft. [[spoiler:It becomes the ''only'' attack she can use without a Field Disruptor equipped during Chapter 8 of SC since it's non-Orbal and she rocks the gun out during the [[StormingTheCastle Jenis Acadamy rescue mission.]] Taken UpToEleven with the Orbal Gear, which carries two heavy machine guns.]]
* GlassCannon: Tita's regular attacks can hit multiple enemies and she hits ''hard'', becoming even more powerful in later games when you get great Quartz to add all sorts of nasty extra effects to those attacks. Unfortunately, she's [[JustifiedTrope only twelve]] and can't take hits very well.
* TheGlomp: Tita frequently delivers these, usually to Estelle. She's ''twelve'' remember. She's also on the recieving side on occasion, usually from Estelle or Anelace.
* GoThroughMe: Tita's biggest CrowningMomentOfAwesome. She puts herself between [[spoiler:Loewe and a wounded Agate and declares that the only way Loewe will hurt Agate is over her dead body. Doubles as a CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming, ItMakesSenseInContext]]
* TheGogglesDoNothing
* HyperspaceArsenal: It's the only explanation for how such a little girl can carry around a [[{{BFG}} cannon]], a [[GatlingGood gatling gun]] and a portable computer, any one of which is is at least the size of her own torso. Taken UpToEleven in [[IntercontinuityCrossover Alternative Saga]] when she adds a [[KillItWithFire flamethrower]] to her arsenal as well.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: Tita inspires this reaction frequently.
* KillItWithFire: In Alternative Saga, Tita gets a flamethrower to suppliment her already considerable arsenal.
* KillSat: Her second S-Craft Satellite Beam. [[MST3KMantra Don't ask how it got there.]]
* TheLoad: Tita actively works to avert this and is determined to pull (more than) her weight. [[spoiler:Played straight and justified in Chapter 8 of SC when all Orbal devices stop working... and Tita's arsenal is almost entirely Orbal-powered. Fortunately, there's a way around this, unfortunately other characters can make better use of that accessory]]
%%* MightyGlacier: Tita becomes this [[spoiler:when using her Orbal Gear or when equipped with the exclusive Jormungandr armor.]]
%%* [[spoiler:MiniMecha: The Orbal Gear]]
* MissFixit: Do you need something repaired? Something where the rest of the party might not even know what it is? Whether it's thousand-year-old technology from a long-lost golden age or the newest orbal circuitry, Tita's your girl.
* MoreDakka: Her preferred method of fighting. Her weapons ''start'' at the "shoulder-braced portable mortar" level and only get ''bigger'' from there courtesy of her S-Crafts.
* MyBelovedSmother: Erika does ''not'' approve of that lout Agate hanging around her precious little girl.
%%* NiceHat
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents work abroad and haven't been home for several years. She understands the reasons why but she's still lonely about being separated for long stretches at a time.
** Agate would probably prefer those stretches [[MyBelovedSmother to be]] [[MamaBear even longer...]]
* PrecociousCrush: On [[spoiler:[[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Agate]]]] no less.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Not raised precisely but her parents have been away from home for quite some time when FC starts.
* RuleOfCool: More than any other character in the trilogy, Tita runs on this. She has a HyperspaceArsenal [[spoiler:including a MiniMecha and a KillSat despite there being no evidence of a space program in her universe.]]
* SmallGirlBigGun: Her basic weapon is about [[{{BFG}} the size of her torso]] and the [[GatlingGood gatling gun]] she whips out for her Cannon Impulse S-Craft is bigger than she is.
* TechnoBabble: Oh god, give her an ''inch''...
* TenderTears: Tita cries more than the rest of the cast combined. She's also the youngest in the cast [[spoiler:except for Renne, who's... different]] and going through all kinds of crazy things so it's pretty understandable.
* WrenchWench: Embodies this trope in everything from her skills to her job to the clothes she wears.

!Professor Albert Russell
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rus_7870.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

Tita's grandfather and a renowned scientist, he is one of the fathers of the Orbal Revolution.
----
* GadgeteerGenius
* MadScientist: In a way. He's still a good guy, though.
* MrFixit: The only character to outstrip Tita in this role.
* TechnoBabble: He is Tita's grandfather, after all. Though he is a bit better at reining it in.

!Professor Erika Russell

-> '''Introduced in:''' The Third

Tita's mother and Professor Russell's daughter.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She isn't a bad person, but she can be quite rude and bitchy when she's in a bad mood. Despite that and her age of 33 she looks positively cute.
* CallingTheOldManOut: With an old man [[WellDoneSonGuy like that]] it's no surprise that they just can't get along.
* FanGirl: Of Lieutenant Julia Schwarz, machines and [[CutenessProximity everything that's cute]].
* GadgeteerGenius: Like father, like daughter.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: She really isn't happy about the [[PrecociousCrush close relationship]] between Agate and her daughter.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Her husband is about two heads taller than her.
* MamaBear

[[folder:Erebonian Empire]]

!Olivier Lenheim[[spoiler:/Olivert Reise Arnor]]
[[quoteright:231:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oli_2766.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (Japanese), Creator/TravisWillingham (game), Creator/DavidMatranga (anime) (English)

A wandering bard from the Empire. Uses a gun, but his deadliest weapon is probably his mouth, which gets him into more trouble than anyone else in the party.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: Had events at the end of FC gone differently, he'd have ended up married to [[spoiler:Kloe]] for reasons of politics. Whether or not they'll end up together on their own initiative has yet to be revealed.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: A lot of his over the top antics are designed to make people underestimate him or to deflect attention or suspicion. [[spoiler:This leads people to sometimes forget that he's an Imperial Prince and can call upon a substantial fraction of the resources of the most powerful military in western Zemuria at will.]] He's also extremely capable in a fight.
* {{Bishounen}}: And he goddamn ''knows'' it, too.
* BiTheWay: In his own words, he pursues what's beautiful, be it male or female. Poor Joshua.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Twice in Sen II, showing up to extract Rean and Alfin from the Pantagruel in the Intermission and showing up with Toval to distract Bleublanc and Duvalie in Final Chapter]]
* BishieSparkle: Part of his victory pose, actually.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's an ''extremely'' competent mage and gunner despite his antics; in fact, he's probably one of the most powerful characters in the game, and even leaving his antics aside, you'll probably want him in the party anyway. [[spoiler:His competence is a hint [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking to his true nature]].]]
* EasilyForgiven: PlayedForLaughs regarding his antic of stealing a high-valued wine in Bose.
* [[spoiler:EvilCostumeSwitch: Played with. In his 'Imperial Prince' uniform worn when accompanying the Fourth Armored Division to Liberl's border he wears black with a distinctly military design in contrast to his usual white civilian outfit. Of course, he's actually trying to accomplish the same thing Kloe is, he just can't let certain people in Erebonia realize it]]
* TheGadfly: Seems to have some elements of this, as he appears to love watching other characters squirm, with Estelle, Joshua, and Agate being his favourite targets. How much of it is Olivier's true personality and how much is just an act is open to interpretation.
* HandsomeLech: Acts this way to nearly every woman ([[BiTheWay and some men]]) he meets. [[spoiler:It's partly just an act and a coping mechanism... but only partly.]]
* [[spoiler:HeroicBastard: His father is Emperor Eugent, his mother was a commoner. As a result, he has the style of Prince but isn't eligible to inherit the throne, despite being the Emperor's firstborn. He is however one of the most heroic characters in the series, clearly wants what's best for Erebonia and has nothing but love for his legitimate siblings, who love him right back]]
* HiddenDepths: There is much more to Olivier than initially meets the eye, and he arguably has the most hidden from view than any other character in the party.
* [[spoiler:InternalReformist: As an Imperial Prince, he pretty much ''is'' the system and he would like to reform it ''without'' the bloodshed that seems inevitable. This is one reason why he and [[WellIntentionedExtremist Osborne]] are arch-enemies]]
** [[spoiler:Class VII is his pet project, an attempt to create even more internal reformists who can bridge the gap between Erebonia's classes]]
* LargeHam: It's one of his defining traits.
** HamToHamCombat: With Bleublanc and in [[IntercontinuityCrossover Alternative Saga]], [[MirrorMatch with himself]], gloriously.
* [[spoiler:IJustWantToBeNormal]]: [[spoiler:It's not so much that he minds being royalty ([[HandsomeLech it can get him a lot of girls]], after all), but he absolutely despises the excesses of the Empire and really wants to either leave it all behind, or by the end of SC, change it.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: He has his moments of it, playing entire scenes like a fiddle.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Or his country does, at any rate. He makes it pretty clear from the beginning that he's saddened by the violent expansionism of his homeland. [[spoiler:This is actually a major driving force in his will to overthrow Chancellor Osborne and steer the Empire towards more peaceful and just policies]].
* NoodleIncident: [[spoiler:He once snuck into a Jaeger group for some purpose, without even bothering with a disguise to blend in. All we know is that it worked and it gave [[BeleagueredAssistant Mueller]] a heart attack.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity
* OddFriendship: With Mueller.
* PluckyComicRelief
* PurpleProse: He loves to speak in this way. [[spoiler:Except when he's wearing his "official" face as Olivert Riese Arnor, where the shift in tone is almost ''jarring''.]]
* SayItWithHearts: On occasion.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:He vanishes following the end of Sen II's Final Chapter and three months later, his whereabouts are still a mystery.]]

!Mueller Vander
[[quoteright:180:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mullervander_6808.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
----
* BeleagueredAssistant and BeleagueredChildhoodFriend: Courtesy of Olivier. Mueller is usually the one holding the bag for his nonsense.
* {{BFS}}: It's still pretty realistic in size compared to Agate's sword, though.
* BladeSpam: Blade Dancer, which combines this with [[SpinAttack spinning around the enemy]] at high speed.
* TheComicallySerious
* DeadpanSnarker: Considering who his friend is, this comes as unsurprising.
--> '''Mueller:''' But I'm guessing you'd rather hug than talk.
* EleventhHourRanger: In SC, he can be recruited during the final dungeon. He becomes a permanent member of the party in The 3rd.
* FantasticFightingStyle: His family's Vander Style is one of the two most prominent fighting techniques taught in Erebonia.
* KubrickStare: One of his expressions.
* MajorlyAwesome
* LightningBruiser: In the 3rd, he has the highest SPD and the second highest DEF, STR, and HP.
* MilitaryBrat: The Vander family has a legacy of service to Erebonia. His uncle Sechs commands one of the Empire's armored divisions.
* OddFriendship: With Olivier.
* SirSwearsALot: Fairly mild compared to most examples, as he only tends to speak roughly when addressing Olivier (which is somewhat justified).
-->'''Mueller:''' I'm here because I've had to follow your stupid ass all over goddamned creation.
--> or
-->'''Mueller:''' ''(after having to look for Olivier all over the place while the latter was participating in the tournament)'' You son of a bitch...
* StabTheSky: His S-Craft ''Haja Kenshou''
* SwordPlant: Part of his VictoryPose.
* TallDarkAndHandsome
* TractorBeam: Ragna Bind draws the targets towards him while inflicting Paralysis.

[[folder:Liberl Royal Family]]

!Queen Alicia von Auslese II

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The elderly ruler of Liberl, widely beloved by all her subjects and noted for her pacifistic approach to international affairs.
----
* TheHighQueen
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Immensely so. In SC, in particular, she helps the party multiple times, supports their efforts wherever possible, [[spoiler:and even pardons Joshua's crimes]].

!Duke Dunan von Auslese

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The nephew of Queen Alicia, and one of two potential heirs to the throne (the other being the Queen's granddaughter, Klaudia). Unlike his aunt and niece, Dunan is an easily manipulated, self-important layabout. He spends most of his time drinking, eating donuts, and reading comics.
----
* BadBoss: Is a (literal) royal nightmare to his butler, Phillip.
* BreakTheHaughty: Happens several times over the course of the games.
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from RoyalBrat to a responsible member of the royal family in SC.
* TheHedonist: Gets up late, spends every night getting drunk, and every afternoon eating donuts and reading comics.
* HeelRealization: Goes through one halfway through SC. He's much better behaved afterwards.
* IdleRich: They don't get much idler or richer.
* ItsAllAboutMe: And how.
* PluckyComicRelief
* RichBitch: Dunan is eminently hateable, from his very first appearance onwards.
* RoyalBrat: Adult version?

!Phillip Runall

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The long-suffering butler of Duke Dunan. His duties generally involve running errands for the Duke, cleaning up after him, apologizing to everyone Dunan crosses paths with, and trying to correct his charge's poor behaviour (with such comments immediately and irritably brushed aside by Dunan). [[spoiler: He is actually a retired Captain of the Royal Guard and, accordingly, a master swordsman.]]
----
* BattleButler: [[spoiler: Doesn't look the part, but it's true.]]
* ChildhoodFriend: To Hilda.
* TheJeeves: Ticks all the requirements. He's well-dressed, polite, and generally much smarter and savvier than Dunan.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Has this opinion about Dunan, especially considering he was the Duke's primary caregiver. He often sees Dunan's failings as his own and, even though he doesn't agree with the Duke's actions, will typically stand by his side as they play out (and take the punishment when it inevitably all goes sideways).
* OldRetainer: Given that he had a hand in raising Dunan, his service to the crown goes back a long, long way.
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler: Phillip is a former Captain of the Royal Guard]]

!Hilda

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The head-maid of the Grancel Royal Castle. She oversees the upkeep of Grancel Castle, ensuring that all servants of the crown live up to her exacting standards. She has served the royal family for decades and is one of the Queen's most trusted servants.
----
* ApronMatron: Hilda doesn't care if you're a member of the most feared division in the army - you mind your manners while she's around or she WILL tear a strip off you.
* ChildhoodFriend: To Phillip. It's even implied they may have been romantically involved at one point.
* OldRetainer: Has served the Castle for decades.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Queen Alicia.

* DeadpanSnarker
* GoingForTheBigScoop: Particularly in SC, where he puts himself in harms way in order to record the deeds of your party [[spoiler:onboard the Liber Ark.]] He and Dorothy win a '[[BlandNameProduct Hulitzer]]' for their coverage of the events of SC (after being nominated for and failing to recieve one for their coverage of the events of FC).
* IntrepidReporter: You'll encounter him everywhere in Liberl, always on the lookout for the next big scoop. [[spoiler:He even joins the cast on the Arseille to chronicle the investigation of Liber Ark firsthand]]

!Dorothy Hyatt

* CameraFiend
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}
* {{Dojikko}}: She has a bad habit of breaking things, to the point that when Nial sees her get off an airship in Kevin's company he immediately worries about what priceless work of Church art Dorothy must have destroyed that he'll have to pay for.
* GeniusDitz: A complete airhead, but very skilled with the camera.

* GeometricMagic: Her S-Craft Trinity Kreis has her carve a glowing triangle into the ground with her sword [[StuffBlowingUp which then explodes.]] The upgrade Pentawa Kreis turns it into a pentacle.
* GroupieBrigade: She's the target of one, composed of seemingly every female under the age of 60 or so in the entire Kingdom of Liberl. They come very close to storming Grancel Castle at one point.
** Ao reveals that her fanclub extends to Crossbell as well. Elie and the Seeker sisters are fans.
* GuestStarPartyMember: She's originally playable for one boss fight in SC, though later releases also added a method of recruiting her [[EleventhHourRanger for the final dungeon]]. She becomes a full-time party member in The 3rd.
* MagicKnight: She's a very balanced character who fights with a rapier but has above average casting ability, uses GeometricMagic in her S-Craft and can create a SingleUseShield.
* RoyalRapier: Fights with one and is the person who taught Kloe how to fence. [[spoiler:She also briefly studied under [[MasterSwordsman Cassius]]]]
* TheRival: To Captain Amalthea, apparently. It's unknown if she cares, though.

!General Morgan

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
----
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking
* BadassGrandpa: General Morgan is a grandfather and he is ''very'' badass. He's won the annual martial arts tournament at Grancel for years running as the series begins. After circumstances force him to take a year off, other characters quietly encourage him to give the young 'uns a chance, while still recognizing that if he fought, he'd probably win again.
* BladeOnAStick / AnAxeToGrind: His weapon is an antique halberd with an oversized blade.
* [[spoiler:HostageSituation: Held in Haken Gate following the start of the coup, with his granddaughter taken hostage by the Special Ops Division to prevent him from taking action.]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: This is pretty much his reaction when the Army has to work with Bracers. He eventually gets better.

!Major Cid

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

* HeelFaceTurn: Though he was never really on [[spoiler:Col. Richard's]] side, he helped Prof. Russell and Estelle's group escape the fortress.
* HeroesPreferSwords: He fights with a saber.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: His heroism during the Hundred Day War is mentioned quite a bit.

* {{Bishonen}}: According to a comic in the 3rd special collection book, he apparently looks like one when his hair gets wet (and therefore, flattened).
* BladeSpam: Luminous Divide and both of his S-Crafts.
* CherryBlossoms: Appear in his aptly named ''Ouka Zangetsu''.
* ColonelBadass: Exactly what it says. [[spoiler:After the first game he loses the Colonel]but keeps the Badass. Trying to get people to ''stop'' calling him Colonel afterwards is a bit of a RunningGag. At the end he finally gives up and allows that [[TrueCompanions the rest of the party]] can call him by his old rank if they want.]]
* CherryBlossoms: His second S-craft, Ouka Zangestu, is filled with these.
* FantasticFightingStyle: Was taught Hachiyou Ittou by Cassius Bright during his youth, he specializes in the Fifth Form, Zangetsu[[note]]Morning Moon[[/note]].
* FlashStep: Some of his Crafts have him move like this [[spoiler:albeit not ''quite'' as fast as, say, Loewe.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Realizing he's been manipulated, he tries to atone by holding off Reverie while the party escapes. Subverted when Cassius arrives, curb-stomps Reverie for him and then verbally and physically smacks Richard around for forgetting everything he taught him]]
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Richard uses them, although in a subversion the weapons aren't treated as being in any way better in-universe [[spoiler:with Richard's GameBreaker potential coming from his stats instead.]]
* IaijutsuPractitioner: The only time his sword ''isn't'' sheathed is in the middle of his attacks and during the start of his victory pose.
* [[spoiler:LightningBruiser: He's fast, his Crafts have ''ridiculously'' low cooldown and he hits extremely hard, especially with his second S-Craft ''Ouka Zangetsu'' which does the most single-target damgage of any attack in the trilogy. * [[spoiler:HellSeeker: He sort of gets his wish, because he was trying to rescue Ries after the latter took the bullet for him and they two both wound up in Gehenna. Of course, by this point he now wants to atone in a healthier way. Good thing it wasn't ''really'' hell.]]
* [[spoiler:HeWhoFightsMonsters: Deliberately does this to himself and asks to fight monsters because he believes he deserves it. He's stopped before he can go completely off the slippery slope.]]
* [[spoiler:HolyHitman: Kevin's special duties for the Church include assassinating particularly vile heretics. He doesn't quote scripture that frequently though. That's what [[TheLancer Ries]] is for.]]
* [[spoiler: LaughingMad: You'd react the same way if you were told that you were getting a ''promotion'' after you just killed your big sister figure and superior.]]
* [[spoiler:ManipulativeBastard: Throughout all of SC and half of The 3rd, almost everything he says and does is in some way a lie calculated to advance his agenda]]
* [[spoiler:MeaningfulRename: Kevin's decision to change his Dominion title at the end of The 3rd is meaningful on its own, and not only because it's the first time in the entire history of the Grals Ritter than anyone has done that. What he changes it ''to'' is even more meaningful as his new title is adapted from Rufina's own.]]
* [[spoiler:MyGreatestFailure: He unintentionally caused the death of his parent-surrogate Rufina.]]
* [[spoiler:MyGodWhatHaveIDone: His entirely understandable reaction to the aftermath of his Stigma manifesting.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity
* [[spoiler:PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: Kevin asks Ein to kill him following the Aster House incident. She gives him a WhatTheHellHero speech and tells him that he's pledged himself to the Septian Church and he's not going to get to take the easy way out.]]
* [[spoiler:PowerIncontinence: Kevin suffers from this in the most tragic way possible when his Stigma fully awakens. The combination of the fact that he's a novice Squire and the Artifact his Stigma just absorbed was known to transform the bearer into a demon did not do anyone any favors.]]
* [[spoiler:RainOfArrows: His second and third S-Crafts, Demon Lance Loa and Holy Lance Ur, summon an enormous number of arrows to follow the one launched from Kevin's bowgun. The latter combines this trope with PillarOfLight]]
* SingleUseShield: Grail Sphere grants all allies within its huge reach Max Guard. At 200 CP, it grants a double-use effect.
* SexyPriest: He's good looking and he doesn't mind taking advantage of it to flirt a bit.
* TheEndingChangesEverything: [[spoiler:Isn't that right, Weissmann?]]
* TsurimeEyes: He has them. They get more pronounced in The 3rd.
* WalkingSpoiler
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Asked in-universe where Kevin's Japanese speech is distinguished by his use of full-on Kansai-ben. Dorothy wonders if that's how people from Alteria speak, though Kevin reveals that while he works there, it's not his actual home. [[spoiler:There's a certain level of ObfuscatingStupidity involved in his use of it.]]
* [[spoiler:WillfullyWeak: Kevin ''could'' have revealed the full extent of his powers at any time before Chapter 4 of The 3rd but aside from blocking Weissmann's mental manipulation he keeps his skills in general and his Stigma in particular a secret until Ries' life is on the line. There's a couple of in-universe reasons for this, including not wanting to put Weissmann on his guard, the strain involved in using his full powers and the fact that he's afraid what might happen if he loses control again.]]
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Green Hair]]: His hair is a very pronounced shade of green, which is the origin of a joke in The 3rd that really only makes sense in Japanese.

!Ries Argent
[[quoteright:230:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riesstatus_2494.jpg]]

->'''Introduced in:''' The Third
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HoukoKuwashima

A Squire of the Grals Ritter. She wields a Temple Sword in battle.
----
* BerserkButton: Do not get between this girl and a meal.
* BigEater: She spends her entire salary on food. In her defense, she ''does'' have an eye for sales and cost-performance.
* ComfortFood: After running off [[spoiler:because she doesn't want to put up with Kevin obviously lying to her about his past]] during the events of Chapter 4 in The 3rd, Ries can be seen for most of the rest of the Chapter sitting in a corner of the Garden, eating.
* ChurchMilitant
* [[ParentalAbandonment Family Abandonment]]: [[spoiler:Her sister died and Kevin vanished five years prior to the start of the series and she doesn't understand why. This led to a 'now what do I do?' crisis before she decided to join the Grals Ritter.]]
* FlechetteStorm: Ries' Thousand Sparrows and its upgrade Infinite Sparrows, which launches the segments of her Temple Sword to attack the enemy from all directions.
* FoodAsBribe: Kevin has learned that bribing Ries with food is a pretty effective technique.
* TheLancer: As a Squire, it's her job to be this to Kevin.
* NunsAreMikos: Actually justified, she swears an entirely different set of vows from ordinary nuns.
* NunTooHoly: Very lightly toyed with, she's a bit of a glutton and prefers to resort to violent solutions but she's definitely a good person and very sincere in her faith. Also, she's part of the ChurchMilitant wing of the Septian Church so she probably gets a bit of a pass doctrinally.
* ThePaladin: She's a nun who likes to quote scripture, wields a [[WhipSword Temple Sword]], has the Orbment setup to be a decent caster, has Mirage-aligned Slots which are the closest the series gets to a [[LightTheWay 'light']] element and her S-Crafts summon angelic guardians.
* SeriousBusiness: Food. Even as a little girl she could tell you which brand of chocolate had the best ratio of taste to cost... and yes, that can totally be calculated mathematically.
* SummonMagic: Both of her S-Crafts summon angelic guardians to smite enemies.
* TheAllSolvingHammer: Her preferred method of solving all problems is to hit them with her Temple Sword until they go away. When Kevin calls her out on this she usually replies that she was only joking. Kevin doesn't buy it.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: As a child, Quincybell chocolate. As an adult, egg sandwiches and bread generally.
* TrainingMontage: Narrated actually, as Ries describes her Squire training in one of the drama cds.
* WhipSword: Her Temple Sword is one.

!Rufina Argent

->'''Introduced in:''' Second Chapter

A Knight of the Grals Ritter and Ries' older sister.
----
* TheAce: Ein viewed her as one and when the First Dominion says you're good...
* BadassNormal: Described as being as good as a Dominion even though she doesn't have any of the powers associated with them, by the First Dominion herself.
* BowAndSwordInAccord: Fought with a Temple Sword in one hand and a Bowgun in the other. This inspired Ries and Kevin's respective choice of arms.
* CoolBigSis: Was this to Kevin and Ries.
* NamedWeapons: Her two weapons are distinguished from most others by having names and titles, Magic Bow "Aion" and Spirit Sword "Silbern".
* NunTooHoly: As with her little sister, very lightly toyed with. She flirts a bit and has an unconventional approach to making Kevin eat.
* PosthumousCharacter: By the time she's first mentioned at the end of SC, she's been dead for years.

!Ein Selnate

->'''Introduced in:''' The 3rd

The head of the Grals Ritter and [[spoiler:the inspiration for the fictional character Carnelia]]
----
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: According to Crossbell Archive, being the Dominion most skilled at drawing out the power of your Stigma means you get to be in charge of the other eleven and in charge of the group that weilds a ''lot'' of power within the Church.
* {{Badass}}: She's the First Dominion, it comes with the territory. It's mentioned [[AllThereInTheManual in sourcebooks]] that she got the position because she's the most skilled at using her Stigma... and that she almost never ''needs'' to use it.
** [[WordOfGod Word Of Badass]]: The only character known to have seen both fight suggests that Ein might be capable of fighting [[PhysicalGod Arianrhod]] equally. Even if he's wrong, that still says a ''lot'' about how good Ein must be.
* CrazyPrepared: [[AllThereInTheManual Crossbell Archive]] implies that she plans ahead with a vengeance. [[spoiler:She was Elie's host during the latter's eyebrow-raising time studying forbidden scriptures in Alteria and it's implied she groomed her as a future ally for the Grals Ritter at the same time she was training Ries and setting up Wazy as a new Dominion]]
* DeadpanSnarker: For a holy knight, she's amazingly snarky.
* DeathGlare: She delivers a couple of epic ones in Ring of Judgment.
* FamedInStory: [[spoiler:Carnelia is a popular series of books, most people reading them don't know that the title character is not only real but ''much'' cooler than her fictional counterpart.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords: We've yet to see her fight but she is seen in artwork wielding a sabre and she helped teach Ries how to use her Temple Sword.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She was very close to Rufina and tries to keep an eye on Kevin and Ries as a result.
* [[spoiler:InventedIndividual: Inverted, the invented individual is a cover for the real individual, created for PlausibleDeniability purposes.]]
* NunTooHoly: She snarks and she smokes and she's kind of a troll.
* ThePaladin: She's the First Dominion, making her de facto the strongest Knight sworn to the service of the Church. She is also (possibly) the most powerful character in the franchise.
* TheRedBaron: Like all the Dominions, she chose her own title: [[spoiler:Carnelia]]
* {{Troll}}: Her appearance in Ring of Judgment smacks of this. She hires Estelle and Joshua with the promise of information on [[spoiler:Renne's whereabouts]] and after they complete the job, she tells them [[spoiler:that Renne ''did not'' rejoin Ouroboros after the Liber Ark incident]] and that information is 100% certain. It's also 100% useless and Ein knows it.
** She then shows her very well concealed soft side almost immediately afterwards, giving them much more helpful information that is 'only 99.9% certain'.
* TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty: [[spoiler:If the Carnelia books are even remotely accurate]] Ein has no problems kicking (or killing) an enemy when they're down, or any issues with fighting dirty generally.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Green Hair]]: Her hair is a dark shade of green.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ouroboros (MAJOR SPOILERS)]]

!Georg Weissmann (aka 'Professor Alba')

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

An archaeologist whom Estelle and Joshua meet in the Prologue of FC and appears several times since. He is researching relics of ancient Zemuria. At least, that's what he claims. He is in fact a high-ranking member of the secret society Ouroboros.
----
* AbsentMindedProfessor: Has shades of this as Professor Alba.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: In FC, seemingly a subversion as he is an absent-minded academic who needs to be escorted on rescue missions. [[OhCrap Emphasis on the seemingly]].
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:As cruel as his method of execution was, it's hard to feel the slightest bit of pity for him.]]
* BigBad: Of FC and SC
* TheChessmaster
* [[spoiler:CruelAndUnusualDeath: Very ''very'' cruel. He is shot with a Salt Bolt, a 'cursed' weapon that slowly transforms the victim into salt from the inside out. Weissmann is fully aware what is happening to him as his body succumbs to the effect, cursing his killer with his last breath.]]
* DarkMessiah: This is essentially how he sees himself. [[spoiler:Not for nothing is the final battle BGM of SC called The Merciless Savior]]
* [[spoiler:DeaderThanDead: As a consequence of being killed with a Salt Bolt]]
* DyingDeclarationOfHate: His last words before dying are used to insult his killer.
* EternalRecurrence: His view of human nature is such that he is convinced that humanity can't be trusted to not make disastrous decisions over and over. The fact that about half of the known issues with the modern world are Weissmann's fault or are otherwise attributable to Ouroboros seems to have passed him by.
* FlawExploitation: He pulls this on Estelle, knowing that if some of her comrades are put in danger she'll [[LeeroyJenkins charge in to rescue them]]. [[spoiler:[[MagnificentBastard Cassius]] and [[ManipulativeBastard Kevin]] pull this on ''him'' at the end of the game, knowing that he won't possibly be able to resist the temptation to be a completely sadistic asshole once he regains control over Joshua. [[BatmanGambit They're right.]]]]
* FourEyesZeroSoul: As Weissmann.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: A series of coincidences turned an ordinary young man into one of the most dangerous people in Zemuria. [[spoiler:First, the [[CataclysmBackstory Salt Pillar Incident]] devastated his homeland and led to him being taken in by the Church. Then, his curiosity led to his desire to study [[TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow the Sept-Terion and the Stigma phenomenon, which is forbidden.]] His desire caught the attention of [[TheAce Rufina Argent]], who [[AllThereInTheManual informed higher authorities about it.]] Weissmann was eventually excommunicated, but not before making a great deal of progress studying Stigmas... and not before he was approached by [[AncientConspiracy Ouroboros]].]]
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: His eyes are [[EyesAlwaysShut mostly shut]] as Professor Alba. As Weissmann, however...
* ManipulativeBastard
* NietzscheWannabe: [[spoiler:The ultimate explanation for his Gospel Plan and why his final battle BGM is called The Merciless Savior: He believes humanity is doomed to continually repeat the mistakes of the past and that everything will be pointless unless he forces the species into a new direction. Other characters (namely Estelle) are only too happy to point out that part of the problems are ones ''he'' caused and get a few points for thinking more like Nietzsche had in mind when they tell him that ''they'' don't think humanity is hopeless and are working to overcome their flaws.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity
* [[spoiler:OneWingedAngel: Twice, as a result of his merging with Aureole. His first transformation is into a gigantic white monster with what look like wings folded over the front of his body, no legs and [[EyesDoNotBelongThere too many eyes.]] When Aureole forcibly transforms him further, the 'wings' unfold to reveal enormous arms, a serpent-like tail attaches to his lower body and actual glowing wings sprout from his back with a halo completing the angelic imagery.]]
* [[spoiler:PeoplePuppets: His specialty]]
* PerpetualPoverty: Professor Alba's excuse for never hiring Bracers.
* RedBaron: [[spoiler: Weissmann the Faceless.]]
* SimpleStaff: His weapon is a staff given to him by the Master [[spoiler:which like Kernviter is described as being connected to 'Outside Reason' and was apparently given to Weissmann as a test and failsafe in case he went rogue]]
* [[spoiler:SinisterMinister: SC reveals that Weissmann was once a member of the Septian Church who was excommunicated for unspecified reasons. He certainly dresses the part. Outside material explains in more detail that he wanted to conduct research the church considered to be [[BrideOfTheMonster tampering in the Goddess' domain]], particularly concerning the Sept-Terion and the Stigma phenomenon.]]
* [[spoiler:TakenForGranite: His death at the hands of Kevin is essentially this.]]
* [[spoiler:Übermensch: He sees himself as this. The fact that his ideal is a new kind of human who will always make the 'right' decisions (as determined by Weissmann) should let you know how far off the mark he is.]]

!Leonhardt/Loewe (aka 'Lorence Belgar')

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

A mysterious young man wearing [[CoolMask a mask]] who was a member of the Army Intelligence Division. Joshua seems to know him. He's actually Legion No. II of Ouroboros, known as the Sword Emperor/Blade Lord.
----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: His sword Kernviter.
* AloofOlderBrother: To Joshua, although they're not blood-related.
* AllThereInTheManual: The Loewe Monogatari manga published in Falcom's own magazine focuses on him, starting shortly before he joined Ouroboros and covering the events of the series from his perspective.
* AnimalMotifs: Lions, obviously. Olivier even takes the time to remark on Loewe's name.
* ArtifactOfDoom: [[spoiler:Kernviter's incredible power comes at a price: It makes its weilder more agressive and can significantly alter the personality, eventually transforming its user into a figurative (if not literal) monster.]]
* AntiVillain: He has a very good reason for resenting all parties involved in the Hundred Day War.
* {{Badass}}: Arguably one of the biggest badasses of the series.
* BreakoutCharacter: Although a very important character to begin with, he proved popular enough that Falcom gave him his own prequel manga [[spoiler:and has kind of sort of brought him BackFromTheDead on multiple occasions]].
* CoolMask: Worn as part of his 'Lorence' disguise.
* CoolSword: Kernviter
* [[spoiler:DragonRider: He briefly rides Regnart in SC when the Ancient Dragon is being controlled by one of the Gospel devices and consciously tries to minimize the damage caused as he gathers the data Weissmann needs.]]
* EmotionSuppression: His aloof attitude is entirely a conscious choice on his part [[spoiler:in order to supress the [[PowerAtAPrice dangerous side-effects]] of his sword]]
* TheFettered: His combination of a code of chivalry and his emotional repression mean that he isn't nearly as powerful as he ''could'' be. The flip side is that this makes him a much better person.
* [[spoiler:GoOutWithASmile]]
* [[spoiler:HeelFaceDoorSlam: Shortly after deciding to help Joshua take down Ouroboros, he gets injured by Weissmann. Shortly after that he is fatally wounded while helping the party fight the Aureole-empowered Angel Weissmann. He manages to go out in ''style''.]]
* [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]]
* ItWasAGift: [[spoiler:How Loewe acquired Kernviter in the first place; it was a gift from the Master.]]
** Expanded upon in Loewe Monogatari. [[spoiler:After breaking the first sword he was using (an ordinary saber) Arianrhod actually makes the offer, knowing about the blade. The two then approach the Master together and Loewe is granted the sword after he accepts the consequences of using it]]
* LiterallyShatteredLives: ''Meiouken'' involves Loewe freezing the entire battlefield, then shattering the ice (and [[InterfaceScrew screen]]).
* MasterSwordsman: It's right there in his Legion title. According to WordOfGod, he's the strongest fighter in the Sora trilogy in terms of battle prowess. In Ao we get to meet [[spoiler:his former sparring partner Arianrhod. She's [[{{Understatement}} considerably stronger]], although she considered Loewe capable of surpassing her in time.]]
* MoralityPet: Joshua [[spoiler:and Renne]] are both this for him and he tries to watch out for both of them.
* NobleTopEnforcer: Almost literally, since 'Enforcer' is a possible translation for ''Shikkousha'', the [[AlternateCharacterReading Japanese subtext]] of Legion. He's by far the nicest active member of the Society and so much more virtuous than [[SmugSnake his]] [[BigBad boss]] Weissmann that it's not even funny. [[spoiler:He pulls a FaceHeelTurn at the end after Joshua provides him the answer he joined Ouroboros to find.]]
* NotSoDifferent: [[spoiler:It's suggested in Loewe Monogatari that one reason Arianrhod thought Loewe could surpass her is because they're similar in so many ways]]
** Also, he thinks this is true of him and Agate. His WarriorTherapist turn in FC comes off as a subtle attempt to ''avert'' this by nudging Agate down a different path and he appears genuinely glad to see how Agate turned out if he's in your party the next time you fight him.
* OddlyShapedSword: Kernviter.
** [[spoiler:His Phantasma counterpart also uses an oddly shaped sword, although there's nothing explicitly special about it.]]
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: You can count the number of people who call him Leonhardt on one hand. Pretty much everybody calls him by his nickname, Loewe.
* RedBaron: The Sword Emperor / The Bladelord.
* [[spoiler:RedemptionEqualsDeath]]
* SelectivelyLethalWeapon: Kernviter seems to operate this way.
* SouthPaw
* SpinAttack: Demon Flames combines this with KillItWithFire. He has a new attack called ''Senpuuzan'' in his Alternative Saga appearance which also works this way.
* TheStoic: He almost never displays strong emotion. [[AllThereInTheManual Loewe Monogatari]] explains this. He deliberately set out to ''become'' this (having previously had some rather extreme [[TraumaticPast if understandable]] anger management issues) because [[spoiler:his sword [[PowerAtAPrice enhances aggressive impulses and is suggested to be able to turn weilders who ''can't'' control themselves into figurative if not literal monsters.]] Presumably this wasn't considered serious enough for the Master to discard the weapon but it was serious enough to ''Loewe'' that he decided to do something about it.]]
* SummonToHand: It's implied that he can do this with his sword in the games and made explicit in the OVA, where he even throws the sword and then summons it back to his hand in mid-flight.
* SwordBeam: In Alternative Saga, Loewe gets two of these. His new attack ''Hienzan'' creates a wave of [[PillarOfLight energy pillars]] while his nameless charged attack throws an energy blast [[AnimalMotifs shaped like a lion]] at the target.
* [[spoiler:TogetherInDeath: Implied in The 3rd, explicitly shown in Loewe Monogatari as he and Karin are together and smiling, watching Estelle and Joshua paying their respects at Hamel]]
* [[spoiler:WreckedWeapon: In Loewe Monogatari (but not the original game), Kernviter is broken in the backlash from destroying Aureole's barrier, with most of the blade being completely disintigrated. Joshua leaves what's left on Karin's grave as per the game]]

!Bleublanc

->'''Introduced in:''' First Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiroakiMiura (Japanese)

Initially introduced as 'Phantom Thief B', Bleublanc is a master thief who also happens to be Legion No. X of Ouroboros, the Phantom Thief.
----
* {{Ahoge}}: He has a single pronounced hair antenna when going around unmasked in Sen. You shouldn't trust him any more then than when he's masked.
* AllThereInTheManual: An in-universe version in the form of the Phantom Thief B Report, a special publication by the Imperial Chronicle of Erebonia which analyzes his actions and offers suggestions to his past.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Despite his last appearance in SC being of him bleeding after the party breaks his mask ''against his face'', the next time he's seen unmasked he is completely unscarred. Possibly explained by Ouroboros' access to extremely advanced technology.
* BishieSparkles: A part of his 'Baron' disguise.
* CriminalMindGames: He loves setting up riddles and watching people struggle to solve them. All evidence suggests that he really doesn't steal for material wealth at all, though for particularly beautiful things he will at least attempt to keep it for himself.
* EarlyBirdCameo: While the first time Estelle and company knowingly meet him is chapter one of SC, Estelle and Kloe had unknowingly met him while in disguise a couple times in chapter two of FC.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: In ''VideoGame/ZeroNoKiseki'', he thanks Lloyd and his party for [[spoiler:helping out Renne]].
* GracefulLoser: He accepts his final defeat and acknowledges the strengths of Estelle and her party before leaving.
* ImpossibleThief: His specialty. Highlights include stealing a prototype tank from the middle of a highly-guarded army base, a statue from Crossbell's city hall and his ultimate goal in FC and SC: [[spoiler:'Hope']]
* JustLikeRobinHood: He's noted to be popular in the Empire, partially because of how awesomely crazy some of his thefts are and partially because the poor tend to find themselves with free money after 'B' has stolen something. The authors of the Phantom Thief B Report caution the readers not to romanticize him since he's still a thief.
* LargeHam
** HamToHamCombat: His encounters with Olivier more or less turn into this.
* MasterOfDisguise: So much so. He has disguised himself as random passers-by, a person investigating one of his thefts and at his most audacious [[spoiler:as a member of your party]].
* MultipleChoicePast: The Phantom Thief B Report examines three individuals who may or may not be the man behind the mask but is unable to conclude which one (if any) is the true 'B'. The clues presented will point the ''player'' to the correct answer though.
* PaperThinDisguise: In Sen, his 'disguise' is simply to take off his mask while still going around calling himself by his usual name and acting much as he usually does. Of course, he's smart enough not to do it in front of people he knows could identify him and instead jerks around Class VII for his own amusement.
* PhantomThief: It's his Legion title.
* ShadowPin: He has the ability to perform this in cutscenes using knives and has done it to the player in SC and Sen II. The latter game finally included a means to turn it into a gameplay mechanic but didn't actually give it to him as a combat skill. Both times it happens the party has to be rescued by a third party, via dispelling the shadows in one case and removing the daggers in the other.

!Walter

->'''Introduced in:''' Second Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Takahiro Yoshimizu (Japanese), Creator/AndrewLove (anime) (English)

Legion VIII of Ouroboros, known as the Lanky Wolf/Direwolf.
----
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* {{Badass}}: The most physically imposing Legion and he does it all with just his fists and feet.
* BarrierBustingBlow: [[spoiler:Grancel Castle has a massive double-gate that could hold off tanks. Walter does not care and ''punches it down'']]
* BloodKnight: He exposits to Estelle on the joys of fighting and not knowing if this is going to be the one you don't come back from. Estelle is suitably creeped out.
* CoolShades: Or possibly SinisterShades since he's, y'know, an antagonist and a BloodKnight. But they do look cool, [[InvokedTrope even characters in-universe think so.]]
* EvilFormerFriend: Of Zane and Kirika.
* HeelRealization: When he belatedly realizes [[spoiler:what his master was trying to teach him whe he agreed to their duel.]] We haven't seen Walter since then so it's not clear to what extent this has affected him.
* KiAttacks: Used in part of his S-Craft Ultimate Blow and his regular Craft Razor Bullet.
* RedBaron: The Direwolf.

!Lucciola

->'''Introduced in:''' Second Chapter

Legion VI of Ouroboros, known as the Bewitching Bell.
----
* {{Cameo}}: She appears as [[spoiler:a fortune teller in the amusement park in [[VideoGame/ZeroNoKiseki Ao no Kiseki]]]]
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler:She plummets to her death at the end of SC, though Schera convinces herself that Lucciola could have survived thanks to her powers. [[DisneyDeath She's right]].]]
* EvilFormerFriend: Scherazard's cool big sister figure.
* [[spoiler:IfICantHaveYou: Her reason for murdering the head of the circus that she and Scherazard were in.]]
* InstrumentOfMurder: The bells she gets her title from.
* MasterOfIllusion: Her specialty.
* PaperFanOfDoom: Lucciola uses a pair of fans as part of her attacks and as part of her illusion-crafting ability.
* RedBaron: The Bewitching Bell

!Renne [[spoiler:Hayworth]]

->'''Introduced in:''' Second Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Kumiko Nishihara (Japanese), Creator/LuciChristian (anime) (English)

A young girl that Estelle and company encounter during the Second Chapter. She seems sweet enough, but there's something... off about her at times. She turns out to have quite a few secrets... like turning out to be the murderous tool of Ouroboros.
----
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:They sold her to a brothel to cover the cost of a business mistake. When she was ''five''.]]
** [[spoiler:Well, that's how she saw it. Actually they really did intend to come back for her and had ''no idea'' what was going to happen; they left her with people they thought they could trust to keep her safe during a tough time and it turned out they were wrong. Renne finally [[TearJerker learns this for herself]] in ZeroNoKiseki.]]
* TheAce: Magically speaking at least: She has the best Orbment setup possible (one line, no restrictions), the best ATS and her STR is higher than Olivier or Kloe and almost as good as [[JackOfAllStats Estelle.]] Her main weaknesses are her low natural MOV, [[SquishyWizard her horrible HP and her low DEF]] although she still beats the other dedicated casters and Joshua in the latter stat. Also, as a Legion and a certifiable genius, she's seen as this in-universe.
* AnimalMotifs: Estelle frequently likens Renne to a cat due to her love of and skill at hide and seek, her mannerisms and her ability to get to unreasonably high places despite her size. She even mimics a cat in a rare alternate VictoryPose and [[spoiler:in ZeroNoKiseki when hacking into the Orbal Network she goes by the alias 'Kitty'.]]
** [[spoiler:Even extends to her weapons. Her first scythe is called Nine Lives and she has another named Cat Killer.]]
* AxCrazy: Her real default state of mind; she's the most emotionally disturbed member of the cast by a mile and a half. Even in The 3rd she's a bit quick to suggest scything things as a perfectly acceptable solution to problems.
* BrokenBird: ''Very'' broken. Estelle and Joshua's entire motivation in Zero is to help her get better.
* BunniesForCuteness: She carries a stuffed animal around with her [[spoiler:which becomes extra creepy when you learn her backstory.]]
* ChildProdigy: It's obvious ''very'' early on, even to the other characters, that Renne is ''far'' more intelligent than her tender age would suggest. She uses this to help Estelle and crew early on in SC. [[spoiler:Too bad the price she was forced to pay for her intellect was ''horrific'' abuse at the hands of D∴G, robbing her of her childhood and turning her into a psychotic killing machine.]]
* CreepyChild: When she stops pretending to be normal, she alternates between borderline insane creepy and outright AxCrazy.
* CuteAndPsycho: Mostly cute even after TheReveal but when the scythe comes out all bets are off.
* [[spoiler:DefeatMeansFriendship]]: [[spoiler:Ultimately how she's brought around; her defeat and subsequent [[VillainousBreakdown epic breakdown]] force her to think about what Estelle and company have been telling and showing her all throughout SC.]]
* [[spoiler: DoubleConsciousness: Renne struggles with her dual identity of Renne the eleven year old girl and Renne the Angel of Slaughter and the girl isn't winning.]]
* [[spoiler:EarnYourHappyEnding: It took three games but by the end of ZeroNoKiseki, Renne finally has a family and a place to call home.]]
* ElegantGothicLolita: That is one frilly dress she wears, and she even carries a little stuffed black rabbit around with her. In the latter parts of SC and especially The 3rd, this serves to drive up the creepy factor around her character a good deal.
* EnfanteTerrible
* [[spoiler:HappilyAdopted: At the end of Zero, by the Brights. Awwwwww...]]
* HumongousMecha: Her partner and form of transportation, the giant [[DeathRay cannon-toting]] Pater Mater who she named herself. This winds up [[AbusiveParents saying a lot about her...]]
* HyperAwareness: [[spoiler:One of the effects of her exposure to Gnosis is enhanced senses.]]
* HyperspaceArsenal: Her scythe is larger than she is, yet she's able to surprise people when she pulls it out on several occasions (particularly Lloyd in ZeroNoKiseki), suggesting this trope must be in effect. The [[AnimatedAdaptation OVA]] makes this explicit.
* [[spoiler:IJustWantToBeNormal: Her ultimate reason for turning away from Ouroboros, as Estelle and crew help her realize that [[GoodFeelsGood being a regular kid actually feels pretty good]], and her life doesn't just have to be dominated by constant battle and murder. She still struggles somewhat with [[AxCrazy just how much she enjoys a bit 'o the ol' ultraviolence]], though.]]
* InterfaceSpoiler: Invoked. During the short time when Estelle and co. have to escort her, trying to cast a friendly spell on her will reveal that she has 10202 HP (at a time when the party members have around 3-4k HP). Also in Zero, during the short time when she's with the party the player will find that she is at level 72 (far above pretty much anything you can encounter in Zero) and has 9999 HP.
* ItWasHisSled: The fact that she's a villain, at least for a while, is actually kind of hard to avoid now that SC's been out for half a decade in Japan. ''Alternative Saga'' practically references it wholesale, never mind all the videos and whatnot spread all over the Internet.
* ManipulativeBastard: Renne does an amazing job of ''acting'' like a normal (if extremely mischevious) eleven year old girl when Estelle and co first meet her. Then you find out what she's [[AxCrazy really]] [[PersonOfMassDestruction like.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast[=/=]RedBaron: The Angel of Slaughter, does anything else really need to be said?
* OnlyOneName: She is almost never referred to by her full name, either in-universe or in official materials and she herself ''never'' uses her last name.
* PlayfulHacker/TheCracker
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: Somehow Renne is able to throw a ''scythe'' and have it return even after it's potentially struck multiple targets, in cutscenes as well as in battle.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She's a [[SuperSoldier Legion of Ouroboros]] with a HumongousMecha companion and an [[SinisterScythe enormous scythe]], is bar none the best caster in the entire franchise and she wears a purple-accented dress and has purple hair. Oh, and her mecha is also purple.
* [[spoiler:SelfHarm: Her arms and legs are covered with self-inflicted wounds. Loewe speculates (and is correct) that it was a means of maintaining some control over her identity while in Paradise.]]
* [[spoiler:{{SexSlave}}: She was formerly this at the hands of the D∴G Cult. It explains a lot of her current behavior.]]
* [[spoiler:ShedTheFamilyName: Renne did this a long time ago, which might have something to do with the fact that as far as she knew, her parents sold her into sex slavery at the age of five and she refuses to acknowledge them as her real parents.]]
** [[spoiler:Following the events of Zero, she has a new family and a new name: Renne Bright.]]
* SinisterScythe: According to the drama cds, Ouroboros made the scythe especially for Renne.
* SpinAttack: Blood Circle
* [[spoiler:SplitPersonality: Renne ''did this to herself'' in Paradise as a coping mechanism. The extent to which any of the other children were ever real is a debated issue in the fandom.]]
* SpotOfTea: Although she sometimes uses the term as an UnusualEuphemism, she also appears to genuinely enjoy having tea parties with Loewe and Joshua. Crossbell Archive even lists 'Black Tea' as one of her Likes.
* SquishyWizard: In the 3rd, she has the highest ATS and one of the lowest HP and DEF.
* SummonToHand: It was suspected she could do this in the Liberl arc but made really obvious in Zero no Kiseki where she couldn't possibly have been wandering around Crossbell with her weapon without Lloyd noticing. He's shocked when she pulls it out to fight off a group of monsters. The OVA explicitly shows her doing this.
* SweetTooth: Renne really likes ice cream.
* TeenGenius: Renne is the first person to realize that Phantasma is reacting to the wishes of the characters, within a few minutes of her arrival.
** Also in the 3rd, she mentions to Estelle that she writes Ph.D. level theses on multiple subjects (under pseudonyms).
* TheAllSolvingHammer: Once she gets angry or afraid, Renne has a two-step approach to handling the problem: First, she'll try to scythe it to death. If that won't work, she'll call [[HumongousMecha Pater Mater]] to crush, atomize or otherwise maim the problem.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: [[spoiler:When Grancel Castle's gate apparently proves impregnable, Renne's idea is to call out Pater Mater to blow the door down, never mind that this would take a good chunk of the castle with it.]]
* ThirdPersonPerson: Sometimes, Renne uses her name in place of a personal pronoun.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Motivates Estelle's interactions with Renne because [[ShapedLikeItself eleven year olds should act like eleven year olds]], not like AxCrazy killers.
* UnusualEuphemism: If a little girl in a frilly dress invites you to a tea party, politely ask where it is and when it is, then make sure to be in another country at the appointed time. Her idea of a fun tea party involves chaos, explosions and her scythe.
** Unless you're Loewe, in which case she [[MoralityPet really is]] [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming inviting you to tea.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: She appears in four of the seven games to date and is a major character in three of them. It's virtually impossible to talk about her without mentioning the twist that occurrs about a third of the way into SC.

!Campanella

->'''Introduced in:''' Second Chapter
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanaeIto (Japanese), Creator/MaggieFlecknoe (anime) (English)

A young boy who comes to Liberl on behalf of the Master to observe the progress of the Gospel Plan. Legion No. 0 of Ouroboros, known as The Fool.
----

* AmbiguousGender: He looks and dresses like a boy but his VA is female and his gender has always been listed as either 'Male (?)' or 'Unknown' in official sources.
* BalefulPolymorph: He can use True Mirror to transform a character into a strange creature for several turns, limiting their abilities.
* TheCracker: He breaks into the systems of Orchis Tower, steals the floor plans and then locks down the security system during the subsequent terrorist attack. He's forced out of the system by resident PlayfulHacker Tio, with help from Jona.
* CreepyChild: He looks like he might be around thirteen at best but he's easily the creepiest of the Legions.
* DeadpanSnarker: One of his major character traits; he almost never stops snarking so when he does, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness it's significant.]] [[spoiler:Specifically, his demeanor ''completely'' changes and he becomes the soul of respect when speaking to the Master, even though he was snarking at all six remaining Anguis only a minute previously and goes back to snarking immediately afterwards.]]
* [[spoiler:DragonWithAnAgenda: His job is to observe the various plans Ouroboros has in motion in order to provide a firsthand account for the Master. This doesn't always go hand in hand with helping the person in charge of carrying out those plans, as Weissmann learned]]
* EnigmaticMinion: [[spoiler:To Weissmann. He's more of a straight [[TheDragon Dragon]] to the Master.]]
* FingerSnapLighter: Campanella can set you on fire or make you explode with a snap of his fingers.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: On several occasions, Campanella will talk as though he knows he has an audience even when nobody else is present. On one occasion, he addresses the player directly, telling them to stop watching him.
* LemonyNarrator: He serves as the narrator for the Ouroboros Report drama CD and as per usual, he [[FirstPersonSmartass snarks his way through the entire thing]] when he's not LeaningOnTheFourthWall. [[spoiler:Except for when he's speaking to the Master]]
* TheJester: He is the least restrained member of Ouroboros and will tell other members of the Society ''exactly'' what he thinks of them. [[spoiler:Except for the Master]].
* ManipulativeBastard: He orchestrated the terrorist attack on Orchis Tower [[spoiler:then 'forgot' to mention to the terrorist groups that ''his'' plan called for them to be captured or killed by some of his other catspaws shortly after they escaped.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: He can create large-scale illusions, an ability he uses to screw with the SSS in Ao on multiple occasions. Also, it's stated that most of the flames he creates are illusory.
* MyRulesAreNotYourRules: His bag of tricks includes infinite Arts Reflection until you knock his HP down to 50% and the ability to redirect your S-Crafts from himself to your allies.
* PeekABangs
* PlayingWithFire: Although his flames are illusory, the pain is very real.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: His age is officially listed as 'Unknown' and in SC Joshua comments that he hasn't appeared to age a day in the ten years since he last saw him, despite looking like a young boy who really should be visibly older.
* RedBaron: Campanella the Fool.
* TeleportSpam: When fought in Ao, he spends as much time teleporting himself around the arena (or teleporting your party around randomly to mess with you) as he does actually attacking you.
* TheTrickster
* {{Troll}}
* TheUnfought: The only agent of Ouroboros we meet in the Sora trilogy who never fights. Finally averted in Ao no Kiseki when Lloyd and co fight him.
* [[HeroOfAnotherStory Villain Of Another Story]]: Spent the entirety of FC causing problems off-camera so that Cassius would be too busy to interfere with Ouroboros' plans in Liberl.
* VillainTeleportation

!Gilbert Stein

-> '''Introduced in:''' First Chapter

The right-hand man of the former mayor of Ruan, Dalmore.
----
* ButtMonkey: [[spoiler:To all of Ouroboros, who know that he's Campanella's personal chew toy. He also manages to get himself imprisoned by unintelligent monsters multiple times throughout the events of The 3rd.]]
* CatchPhrase: "I am an elite, damn it!"
* FutureCopter: He eventually becomes the pilot of a G-Apache, one of Ouroboros' advanced Overmuppets.
* ISurrenderSuckers: He has ''weaponized'' this as one of his Crafts.
* MilesGloriosus: So very much.
* SmugSnake
* TimeBomb: His mines, which he'll set randomly on the map every few rounds.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: He ''claims'' he's stronger than before each time you fight him but he's not really. [[ConservationOfCompetence However, his backup does get progressively better.]]
