I\'m not in any postition to debate the equalizer issue myself, at least until I watch the season again, but the cast was weak, and Bj & Tyler might be the luckiest team ever

After the failed experiment that was the Family Edition, a preview for TheAmazingRace's 9th season promised a much-needed return to form. The cast featured a quirky cavalcade of characters, with a goofy and very self-aware atmosphere pervading throughout. However, thanks to the casting of not one, but two utterly dominant teams, the season was seen as slightly predictable, even with the odd upset here and there. In the larger picture, the utter predictability of the race failed to recapture the momentum that stalled with Family Edition, but the season itself did earn many fans, especially since this season has one of the most popular teams to run the race and started the trend of FinalExamFinale tasks appearing more regularly.

1) There is a difference between being comparatively weak and actually weak. There were plenty of equalizers, it\'s just that the Hippies and Frat Boys were so dominant they were utterly meaningless. 2) Eric & Jeremy got plenty of screen time on their own thanks to their dominance and personality. 3) No Storyline =/= No Screentime. They got comparatively more screentime than most 3rd-placers, it\'s just that Ray more low-key and unmemorable than usual.

The cast featured a quirky cavalcade of characters, with a goofy and very self-aware atmosphere pervading throughout. Best friends, and the more obvious alpha-male team of the season. Known for their constant flirting with the girls of the world, including fellow team Danielle & Dani. Until Meghan & Cheyne of Season 15, they held the highest overall finishing average of any team, only to be beat out by B.J. & Tyler when they stumbled at the Final Roadblock and ended up 2nd. Young dating couple, the only team that could regularly keep up with B.J. & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy. They try to establish themselves as a strong adventurous couple similar to Kris & Jon from Season 6 early on, but thanks to a combination of little screentime, sour attitudes, bickering over the tiniest little things and a contempt for the fan-favourite team and eventual winners, they were seen as anything but. Ultimately, Monica's meltdown during the pot-carrying Detour in Thailand cost them a spot in the Final 3 and left them in 4th.

* TookALevelInJerkass: Post-Race. Along with Chip & Kim (Season 5), they openly complained when they did not get invited back for All-Stars, released a video mocking the teams they felt were "lesser choices," called themselves the most popular team to ever run the race, and the "most winningest winners ever to win."

University friends, the more obvious alpha-male team of the season. Known for their constant perverted flirting with the girls of the world, including fellow team Danielle & Dani. Until Meghan & Cheyne of Season 15, they held the highest overall finishing average of any team, only beat out by B.J. & Tyler when they stumbled at the Final Roadblock and ended up 2nd. However, Eric's status as a contender for "best racer ever" is a topic of much debate, particularly after his generally poor performance in All-Stars in which he raced with Danielle (the only team not specifically chosen by Phil as one he'd like to see back).

* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: In Darwin, Australia, they tried to cancel the teams' cabs by masquerading as Ray & Yolanda. This backfired when they realized their own cab was canceled as well and Joseph & Monica's wasn't, though they managed to avoid getting a penalty for sabotaging the other teams.

I got the information about Dave & Lori being a potential candidate from All-Stars from a forum, and I wouldn\'t mind a link to Phil\'s full list since I can\'t find it for some reason.

After the failed experiment that was the Family Edition, a preview for TheAmazingRace's 9th season promised a much-needed return to form. The cast featured a quirky cavalcade of characters, with a goofy atmosphere pervading throughout. However, the competition was a primarily weak one, amplified by a very unbalanced course which overly benefited those who got ahead in the first couple of legs, meaning that two (maybe three) teams ran away with the entire season. In the larger picture, the utter predictability of the race failed to recapture the momentum that stalled with Family Edition, but the season itself did earn many fans, especially since this season has one of the most popular teams to run the race and started the trend of FinalExamFinale tasks appearing more regularly.

!! Brian Jeffrey "B.J." Averell & Tyler [=MacNiven=] (''The Hippies'')

University friends, with Tyler being a filmmaker who first came to prominence with his documentary ''Kintaro Walks Japan''. Very wacky and outgoing, they always made their presence known throughout the various countries they visited. Throughout the race, they repeatedly exchanged first place with Eric & Jeremy and eventually beat them at the flags Final Roadblock to win the million. They became one of the most popular teams to run the race due to their comedic antics, but to the fans that found them unfunny instead, they were ''really'' hated.

* BornLucky: They benefited the most from the unbalanced course design, with the lack of equalizers and overabundance of luck tasks in the first half of the season allowing them to get and stay ahead. Then when they fell behind, they were saved by another team getting even more lost and an equalizer in the next leg, and went on to survive two of three consecutive alternating non-elimination legs.
* CallBack: They paid tribute to Linda & Karen's iconic Bowling Moms T-Shirts from Season 5.
* {{Catchphrase}}: Possibly the most catchphrase-heavy racers ever, with their power word "T-TOW!" and "Frat Boys!!!" featuring most prominently.
* ChewingTheScenery: Mainly Tyler.
* [[GranolaGirl Granola Guy]]
* LoveTriangle: Egged on one when Eric flirted with Monica, trying to make Joseph jealous.
* NoIndoorVoice
* NoSenseOfDirection: Drove 1 hour in the wrong direction in Greece, but stayed in the race due to Lake & Michelle getting even more lost.
* SitcomArchnemesis: With Eric & Jeremy, in which they even acted as if they were in a sitcom. Also Joseph & Monica, though that rivalry tended to be less lighthearted.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: By default due to their dominance, but in general, their wacky hijinks were the main focus of the race, with Eric & Jeremy and Joseph & Monica getting screen time primarily due to their respective rivalries with the team.
* UnderdogsAlwaysWin: Though they dominated most of the race, they were treated as such compared to Eric & Jeremy, who outperformed them in the final leg up until the Final Roadblock.
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: The subject of their victory speech.

!! Eric Sanchez & Jeremy Ryan (''Frat Boys'')

* DumbBlonde: Jeremy. Needless to say, Eric was the brains of the outfit.
* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: Barely a scene goes by without them mentioning the ladies.
* LoveTriangle: When Eric flirted with Monica, causing increased tension between her and Joseph.
* MrFanservice
* ReadTheFreakingClue: Eric claimed this was the secret to their success early in the race: just being idiots reading their clues.
* SitcomArchnemesis: With B.J. & Tyler.
* TheSlacker: Claimed to be such in their pre-race interview.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Like B.J. & Tyler, they were this by being dominant and due to their rivalry.

!! Raymond "Ray" Whitty & Yolanda Moore

Athletic African-American dating couple. Generally finished at the back of the pack, surviving mostly due to other teams' mistakes. They finished 3rd when they were completely unable to catch up to the Hippies and the Frats in the final leg.

* NoSenseOfDirection: This is what left them completely unable to compete with the top two teams in the final legs.
* OutOfFocus: Particularly in the later legs, with so much attention being fixated on the Hippies-Frats-[=MoJo=] feud.
* ShesGotLegs: Yolanda, which frequently got brought up throughout the race. In one task, she wished she could use her legs rather than her weaker arms.

!! Joseph Meadows & Monica Cayce (''[=MoJo=]'')

Young dating couple, the only team that could regularly keep up with B.J. & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy. They try to establish themselves as a strong adventurous couple similar to Kris & Jon from Season 6 early on, but over the course of the season, they end up constantly bickering, with Monica frequently breaking down at the tasks. Ultimately, her meltdown during the pot-carrying Detour in Thailand cost them a spot in the Final 3 and left them in 4th.

* AlwaysSecondBest: Due to the Hippie/Frat Boy domination.
* TheLoad: Monica, who managed to cry while carrying a swordfish.
* MsFanservice: Monica. [[MaleGaze The camera had a certain fascination with her breasts]].
* PortmanteauCoupleName: They even wore "Mo" and "Jo" shirts to emphasize this.
* SitcomArchnemesis: With B.J. & Tyler. This was the main reason why the Hippies Yielded them.

!! Francis "Fran" Lazarus & Bernard "Barry" Lazarus

Elderly couple, one of many teams to bumble their way into 5th place. Phil was noticeably shocked when they arrived first in Oman, though their luck ran out in the next leg.

* BornLucky: They managed to consistently remain in 4th place until their sole leg win due to the lack of equalizers canceling out their many mistakes.
* FailedASpotCheck: In the first leg, they spent a very long time looking for the cluebox. When they found it, Barry thought someone moved it. He also [[WatchOutForThatTree backs his car into a tree]] at one point.

!! Terry "Lake" Garner & Michelle Garner

Couple from the southern U.S.A. Lake was known for his loud, aggressive behavior which eventually cost them the race due to his breakdown over getting lost, landing them 6th.

* ChewingTheScenery: Lake.
* GoshDangItToHeck: "Daggummit."
* TheLoad: Michelle. She refused to take a diving Roadblock in fear she might have to do it naked.
* MasochismTango: Reached its climax in their last leg, with Lake's "Shut up, bitch!"
* NoSenseOfDirection
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Lake's real name is never mentioned on the show.

!! David "Dave" Spiker & Lori Willems (''The Nerds'')

Dating nerd couple. Generally have a pleasant relationship to the point that Dave immediately regretted the one fight they had. They ended in 7th place due to the lack of an equalizer after Lori broke down at the Greek statue task. They were one of the 15 teams selected by Phil to come back for All-Stars, though they did not make the cut.

* {{Adorkable}}
* {{Leitmotif}}: They got their own "Nerd" theme.

!! Danielle Turner & Dani Torchio (''The Double-D's'')

Blonde friends team. As the season's dumb blonde team, they raced unremarkably and ended up being the only direct victims of the Yield (since no other team was eliminated on the same leg they got Yielded), finishing 8th. Still, they flirted with Eric & Jeremy, which was enough for the producers to consider pairing Danielle with Eric in All-Stars.

* BuxomIsBetter: Hence their nickname.
* DumbBlonde
* OneSteveLimit: A particularly notable aversion, as one of them had their name shortened so that the team wouldn't be named "Danielle & Danielle".
* NoSenseOfDirection: They followed Wanda & Desiree when they were driving in circles in Germany.

!! Wanda Lopez-Rochford & Desiree Cifre (''Team Boricua'')

Latina mother/daughter pair. Started off strong by finishing 3rd in the first leg, but were hit hard by Killer Fatigue during the double-leg, leading them to get terribly lost in Germany and were narrowly beaten out by Danielle & Dani at the needle-in-a-haystack gnome Roadblock, finishing 9th.

* HiddenDepths: Desiree is a video game scriptwriter and thus displays nerdy traits despite her celebrity-like appearance.
* TheLoad: Wanda, most notably when she freaked out in the Russian swimming pool while Desiree attempted to encourage her. Playing the de facto parent eventually took its toll on Desiree, leading to her breakdown at the gnome task.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Desiree even admits they got lost a lot upon their elimination.
* ShockingElimination: As they initially seemed like a team that could keep up with the eventually dominating B.J. & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy.
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: Their reaction to seeing Sao Paulo during a helicopter ride, to the point that Desiree said they would be grateful for the experience no matter what place they ended up.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Wanda and underwater diving.

!! Lisa Hinds & Joni Glaze (''The Glamazons'')

Loud sisters team. Their bickering caused them to get lost and fall behind a lot, enough to end up in 10th.

* NoIndoorVoice
* NoSenseOfDirection

!! John Lowe & Scott Braginton-Smith

The season's Team Gay, they suffered from both a bad cab driver and constant bickering which led to them going out first in 11th place.

* NoSenseOfDirection: Notice a trend?
