!!Altina:

Altina, fourth child of the emperor. Famous for having flaming red hair and crimson eyes.

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Though she never says that she loves him, she makes explicitly clear in volume 8, chapter 2 that she does ''not'' want to separated from Regis, for any length of time, and clings to his back as she's saying it. [[InnocentInnuendo Even going so far as to ask Regis to "sleep with" her because she's afraid to let him go.]] Note that she's wearing her night clothes, and by necessity is GoingCommando.
* ArrowCatch: An unusual variant. She slices a crossbow bolt flying at Regis from an unseen assailant in volume 5.
* {{BFS}}: Her weapon, Quattre Tonne is bigger than she is, and almost as heavy.
* BookDumb: Chapter 3 of volume 6 shows that Altina considers reading a horrific chore. As a result, she is completely ignorant on most naval terms, military tactics and formations, and even publicly available technological achievements.
* BrainsAndBrawn: The brawn to Regis' brains.
* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: She is insanely strong, as befits those of her bloodline.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She ''really'' does not like other women getting close to Regis. The prank that Elanora played on Regis in Volume 3, still chafes her in volume 6, several months later.
* [[SonOfAWhore Daughter Of A Whore]]: Her mother was an imperial "consort."
* DidntThinkThisThrough: In her rage for Latrielle falsely claiming Regis dead, she comes out to face Latrielle, in force, to find herself outnumbered at least 2 to 1 with no idea what to do. In fact, she rides out so quickly that she misses Regis's letter instructing her in the best strategy to deal with him. Fortunately, Regis was able to recover.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: Her sword's hilt breaks at the beginning of volume 5, forcing her to go get it repaired, and keeping her out of the fight for the rest of the volume.
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Arrow Sparrow Princess" is the derogatory name given to her by the nobility. She doesn't understand why until Regis points out that the way she carries, Quattre Tonne, (the only way she feasibly can) makes her look like a sparrow shot with an arrow through the midsection.
* FieryRedhead: Although magic doesn't exist in the world setting, she fits every other aspect of this trope to a T.
* GlacierWaif: She carries and ''easily'' wields a sword as big as she is (if not bigger), and almost as heavy.
* GoingCommando: In volume 7.5, it is revealed she sleeps without wearing underwear, though not by choice. Being in a border fortress, she simply doesn't have access to feminine undergarments, at least not those in her size.
* GoodIsNotDumb: Although she's not well versed in many things, aside from swords-fighting and horse riding, she's a very, very quick study, and can grasp complex concepts with frightening ease.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: She can cut arrows and bolts out of the air, at night, from an unseen assailant, just by detecting the killing intent.
* KingIncognito: She is introduced pretending to be a coach driver, so she can recruit Regis to be her strategist.
* LeeroyJenkins: She is easy to provoke and quick to enter the fray. The effectiveness of this aspect of her personality varies wildly.
* MartialPacifist: While she loves fighting, almost to BloodKnight levels, she '''hates''' war.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: As seen in the illustration on the cover page, she's as thin as a reed, yet she has the strength to wield a weapon that weighs over a hundred pounds.
* OneHandedZweihander: She can wield Quattre Tonne one handed if she has to.
* OppositesAttract: The one and only guy she'd be willing to marry is her strategst, Regis, who is her polar opposite in just about everything both physically and mentally.
* OverlyLongName: Marie Garter Argentina de Belgaria
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: Despite being only 14, she's more powerful and experienced than most knights twice her age and leads the battle on the front lines..
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Treats the captured Diethart as an invited guest as opposed to an enemy prisoner, despite not being compelled to do so. Especially as "barbarians" have no rights, and are routinely executed. Further, when dealing with commoners, she doesn't stand on title or ceremony, but takes people as they are.
* RebelliousPrincess: Combined with PrettyPrincessPowerhouse. Volume 7.5 shows that she would have been perfectly safe if she let herself be treated as an ornament immediately after being sent to the front lines. She views such treatment as being nothing more than a prisoner.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Takes to the front lines, personally. In fact, she doesn't like it when Regis tries to hold her back.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: She gives Regis one at the start of the story by pretending to be a coach driver.
* ShipTease: Almost constantly with Regis.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She is completely head over heels for Regis because he's honest, hard working, kind, and ''completely loyal'' to her.
* SingleTargetSexuality: She's the only one that recognized Regis in disguise, even when they were both at a distance too great for either side's army to see each other clearly.
* SkilledButNaive: She's ''very'' skilled in battle. Still, there's a great deal about the world that she doesn't fully understand. Being well aware of this, she snatches up Regis, in a hurry. This is a decision she does not regret.
* SubordinateExcuse: Inverted. She will use the fact that Regis is her direct subordinate to place him in intimate situations with her at any opportunity.
* TenderTears: She has a really hard time stopping her tears from flowing when some petty bureaucrats use official military orders to separate her and Regis in volume 8.
* ThatCameOutWrong: At the very beginning of Volume 6, on the way to regroup with the First Army, she suggests "sleeping with" Regis to make sure he gets enough rest, considering the fact that she knows he neglects sleep in favor of reading books. To her credit, she realizes the implications immediately. [[ShipTease Although going by their respective]] LuminescentBlush, [[ShipTease neither of them would be opposed to the idea under better circumstances.]]
* TitleCharacter: The story concerns her.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She's so much into this trope that she can almost pull off TomboyAndGirlyGirl with herself.
* TookALevelInBadass: By the end of Volume 7, she can match Mercenary King Gilbert in melee combat, and that's something not even Latrielle could do. [[spoiler: When she got Quatre-Tonne back from the blacksmith, Enzo, she utterly destroyed Gilbert's trident and forced his surrender.]]
* WorfHadTheFlu: When provoked into battle [[spoiler: with Latrielle]], he boasts about how vastly superior his swordsmanship is. What he doesn't realize is that she's fighting him on equal terms with a broken hand. Further, Volume 5 reveals that Quatre Tonne wasn't even in its ideal state. The previous Emperor ''could not wield it'' and had it altered from its original form into a purely decorative sword. The fact that Altina could wield it at all speaks volumes.

!! Regis [[spoiler:du]] Aluric:

A young boy with almost no martial prowess who loves to read books. He has almost no sense of self-worth and if sent to the front lines, he would likely trip over them. Still, he has encyclopedic knowledge of numerous tactics, strategies, and the various active factions of the world setting.

* TheAce: Though he isn't really willing to believe it, he was '''the top strategist''' in the military academy. He only lost a strategic debate ''once'' with a rival academy, and that defeat was rather suspicious, as the one judging the match was firmly indentured to the victor. As is revealed in Volume 7.5 ''even academy instructors could not match him.''
* AlmightyJanitor: Even after his field promotion at the beginning of Volume 6, his rank and title don't come anywhere near close enough to match his talent and accomplishments. In fact, when he had to be the ''acting admiral'' of the Belgarian fleet, due to the actual admiral being sidelined by a war injury, the sailors under his command did not hesitate to say he's the ''best admiral they've ever had.'' By the time of Volume 10, Latrielle thinks he should be a full-blown general, and anything less is beneath him.
* BadassBookworm: He can't swing a sword without nearly cutting off his own legs, and has to be held while riding a horse, but his encyclopedic knowledge of tactics and strategies both real and fictional, for the world setting, from the books he's read, have led him and Altina to victory, repeatedly, against overwhelming odds.
* BadDreams: He starts showing signs of PTSD in the volume 8 prologue. He awakes from a nightmare where dead Belgaria soldiers are grabbing at him and angrily accusing him of leading them to their deaths. Clarisse was there to calm him down.
* BatmanGambit: He tears the Leonbalt army appart in volume 10, by predicting his each and every move, five steps in advance. The king of Leonbalt had an epic VillainousBreakdown in response.
* BeleagueredBureaucrat: He was this for most of Volume one, and a significant part of Volume 2. The reason, he was forced to maintain the finances, quarter mastering, and account keeping for the entirety of Altina's fortress base, alone, because all the other accountants, book keepers, and quartermasters were caught red-handed stealing from the military, and any incoming replacements were found to be just as wanting, if not worse. He had to literally collapse from overwork before anyone competent could be found.
* BerserkButton: Suggesting censorship or banning books is one of the few things that will piss him off.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Meek, gentle, almost shy with little to no confidence in himself, make him an enemy, however, and woe be onto you.
* BigDamnHeroes: He manages to come to Clarisse's aid in Volume 2 and save her from an AttemptedRape.
* BrainsAndBrawn: The brains to Altina's Brawn.
* BreakThemByTalking: Is an absolute expert in this. In volume 1, he earns the respect of the barbarian chief, Diethart, by being completely fearless in negotiations. In volume 2, he manages to terrify a corrupt army inspector armed with a gun and a sword, and willing to use them, simply by talking to him, and shortly after that, gathering the intel on the Varden Duchy Fort Volk from a captured patrol simply by questioning the captured patrol, without using torture of any kind, trounced an entire DecadentCourt in volume 3, and in volume 5, utterly humiliated a rude messenger that had insulted his army unit. We find out from his sister in Volume 5, that he's been good at this since age 10.
* ButNowIMustGo: To the chagrin of both Altina and himself at the end of Volume 8, he, sadly, heads to the Belgaria capital to pass the tests required to claim the Chevalier title Latrielle gave him in volume 6. He briefly considers resigning his military career so he could stay at her side, but ultimately decides that his going to the capital is a quicker and more effective method of meeting Altina's goals.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: He takes the casualties that result from his strategies and tactics very hard. Even when those casualties result from things beyond his control, like the SuicidalOverconfidence of the troops.
* ChekhovsGun: The very expensive book he purchases in the first volume becomes a critical plot device in volume 2. [[spoiler: It contains an original blueprint to Fort Volk, and is instrumental in the fort's capture.]]
* ChickMagnet: Although Altina is the one most smitten with him, there are numerous other women showing quite a bit of interest. He's absolutely baffled by this.
* CombatMedic: His penchant for reading any book he comes across includes medical texts. So much so, that he can perform field surgery to save Queen Margeret Steelheart from a self-inflicted stab wound. He later proves his expertise in diagnosing Franziska's injuries when she's attacked by Becker.
* CombatPragmatist: Isn't above turning to some dubious methods to secure military victory.
* CrazyPrepared: After the end of the naval battles in Volume 6, he reveals that he had strategy on top of strategy on top of strategy prepared for the battle. Fortunately, the first strategy of the second battle was more than sufficient.
* CreepyChild: His older sister tells Altina a story of how when Regis was no more than seven years old, he completely, and thoroughly saw through and terrified a con artist that was selling "roof repairs" for their family home. Note that the con man in the story was very skilled at ExactWords and LoopholeAbuse.
* CripplingOverspecialization: He's an absolute demon when it comes to strategies and tactics, even being able to flawlessly navigate a DeadlyDecadentCourt, and completely helpless in just about everything else. In volume 9, he ''literally'' trips over the front lines and has to be carried on a medical stretcher to avoid being trampled to death by the infantry.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He doesn't look like much, and is often presumed to be unreliable, even by himself, but when his strategies are actually employed, woe be unto the enemy!
* CruelMercy: He saves Margaret's life by performing field surgery on her self-inflicted knife wound, so that she's alive to answer for starting her unprovoked war on Belgaria.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: His brilliant strategic mind is not infallible. He both failed to recognize Franziska and prepare for Latrielle to try killing him in the First Army warcamp ''in the middle of the celebration'' of the victory over High Britannia. He also failed to see Gilbert countering his "Fog" strategy, but that was more a lacking in the soldier's training than his shortcoming.
* DissonantSerenity: He has a tendency to be eerily calm in battle, and many characters have not only taken note, but commented on it.
* DraggedIntoDrag: Franziska, Jessica, and Fanrine assemble the "perfect" disguise for Regis to infiltrate the Imperial Capital while Latrielle is looking to kill him. ''Put him in a dress!'' To his chagrin and their amusement. It's so surprisingly effecive, soldiers from the First Army try out their best pick-up lines on him.
* EmbarrassingNickname: He was once known as "The Green Turtle."
* HeroesPreferRedheads: The woman to whom he's completely devoted and would happily marry if he could is Altina, who has flaming red hair.
* HeroicSelfdeprecation: He considers himself completely worthless as a human being. No matter how effective his strategies are, he doesn't think himself worthy of praise, as he wasn't the one actually fighting, and although he's fully aware of how much a ChickMagnet he is, he doesn't feel deserving of their affection. It isn't until he's confronted by Clarisse, Altina's maid that we find out why. He has the perception that being "manly" means suffering from a terminal case of TestosteronePoisoning. Even his ''older sister'' was more manly than he. The true cause gets revealed in volume 5, and it's quite tragic. This is beginning to fade in later volumes as his strategic victories begin to boost his confidence.
* HiddenDepths: His encyclopedic knowledge of books is very valuable outside the battlefield as well. He had Altina and Clarisse completely enthralled by reciting a book similar to Tales of the Arabian Knights, from memory, while they were all waiting for Jerome's arrival in volume 7. Jerome goes so far as to accuse him of being a bard.
* HumbleHero: Goes with his HeroicSelfdeprecation. He feels ''more'' uncomfortable getting awards, titles, and praise than he does going into live combat, or navigating a DeadlyDecadentCourt.
* IgnoredExpert: Had the seventh division heeded his warnings, volume five would have turned out very differently. It is not the first time either. His previous benefactor, Marquis Thénezay, also ignored his repeated warnings about an impending ambush. Regis was left helplessly watching the man turned into a HumanPincushion.
* ILied: A heroic example in volume 2. He promised the corrupt military inspector that he, Eric, and Clarisse would happily forget all about the attempted rape, and attempted murder if he stood down. The moment Altina showed up on the scene, Regis sold him out immediately.
* ItsAllMyFault: Regis blames himself for the death of his former benefactor, Marquis Thénezay. Thinking that if he had somehow warned him, a ''third time'', about an impending ambush, the man might still be alive, despite ''literally'' getting thrown out of the officer's tent, and being branded a coward for not being full of SuicidalOverconfidence.
* MisanthropeSupreme: He has a very dark and jaded view of humanity. He happens to be right.
* MyGreatestFailure: In addition to the loss of his former benafactor, Marquis Thénezay, he views his failure to predict the death of Belgaria's Emperor and the ascension of Latrielle this way.
* NervesOfSteel: HeroicSelfdeprecation aside, he is not an easy man to scare. Clarisse manages to terrify him only because she's a master of TranquilFury and knows all his weak spots. On the battle field, it takes Altina slicing a crossbow bolt aimed at him in mid-air to startle him. Even when he's absolutely terrified, he never loses his cool, and always calmly analyzes the situation to find a solution.
* NiceGuy: He's genuinely very gentle and kind, and truly treasures his comrades.
* NoBadassToHisValet: When Bastian hears of his exploits in Volume 7.5, he can't bring himself to believe it.
* OppositesAttract: While he's well aware of the affections, many, many women show him, although failing to comprehend why due to horrifically poor self-esteem, the only one whose hand he'd take in marriage, if he could, is princess Altina, his polar opposite in just about everything, both physically and mentally.
* OrphansOrdeal: His parents both died from illness when he was very young, and his older sister did her best to raise him, but unsurprisingly, did not do a very good job.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He gives a truly cathartic one to Queen Margaret when clinically, and accurately, describing the symptoms of her narcissism. She [[DrivenToSuicide does not take it well.]]
* RedBaron: He has two. To his allies in Belgaria he's known as "The Wizard," a title he unwittingly chose himself in volume 5. To his enemies, he is known as "The Demon of Belgaria" due to his highly unorthodox, morally ambiguous and ''highly effective'' tactics and strategies. He picks up a few more by volume 8 without his notice. ‘Hero who saved the nation’, ‘Wizard of the battlefield’, ‘Monster Strategist’, ‘The Princess’ Shield of Wisdom’ [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall Titles that only appear in entertainment novels.]]
* SkewedPriorities: Place a book in his hands, and he will forget to eat or sleep. He equates reading with the need to breathe.
* SlasherSmile: He shows this on occasion. Most notable in volume 3 when his strategy to deal with Prince Latrielle really comes together. When Altina saw it, she was scared stiff.
* TheSoCalledCoward: Is openly accused of cowardice by Vincent, the strategist of the seventh division, because he advocated against clashing with the Britannia army head on in volume 5. Since Vincent is the one strategist to actually defeat Regis in mock strategic debates, Regis was not able to give a rebuttal. [[spoiler: Regis would turn out to be proven right as Vincent's "brilliant" strategy wound up leading the seventh division into a meat grinder that all but completely annihilated them, and would have if not for Regis's quick strategic and tactical thinking.]] Vincent is not the first one to brand him a coward, and forcefully eject him from the officer's tent either. What's worse about Vincent is that he's convinced that cowardice is somehow contagious, like a disease, and convinces his superior officer to completely sideline Regis, Altina, and her entire unit to keep it from spreading. [[spoiler: Many troops died needlessly because Altina could not intervene until the commander of the seventh division performed a HeroicSacrifice.]]
* TheStrategist: This is his role in the story, in a nutshell.
* ShowyInvincibleHero: There is something just so immensely gratifying about "seeing" his strategies in action.
* SuperDrowningSkills: He can't swim, and even almost drowned in a basin of water once, and not as a small child.
* TaughtByExperience: By the time of Volume 10, he's begun crafting his own strategies, as opposed to copying what he's learned in books, due to evertyhing he's experienced, both good and bad over the course of his life. These strategies are no less effective than what he's done before.
* TearsOfJoy: When he receives a hero's send-off in chapter 3 of volume 8, he's confused, chagrined, and cowed, honestly believing that he doesn't deserve it, but when [[ActionSurvivor Ducasse]] comes along and cheers him, he gets all misty-eyed, knowing full well that Ducasse means it.
* WeCanRuleTogether: He makes this offer to Jessica of Renard Pendu in volume 11, ''and she accepts with only token hesistation.''
* WeDoTheImpossible: Almost constantly. Only Altina has enough faith in him to believe his ''extremely'' unorthodox tactics and strategies are going to work before seeing them in action, and this is against ''impossible'' opponents that have already beaten soldiers with '''far''' more rank, training, and experience than himself. Her faith is well justified.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: More like "what do you see in me?!" He asks Clarisse, point blank, when she comes on to him a bit too strongly. Amusingly, she actually tells him that contrary to his perceptions, women ''actually like men who are gentle and kind,'' not the over-machismo fools Regis associates with manhood.

!! Clarisse:

Altina's maid, and long-time friend and companion.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: She is gentle and kind, but she's a master of TranquilFury and easily terrifies Regis into doing what she wants.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Altina.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: She is described as having brown hair and brown eyes.
* TheGadfly: Volume 7.5 shows that she loved to tease and torment Altina when the two were alone prior to the arrival of Regis. Once Regis came into the picture, he became her new chew toy.
* MarshmallowHell: In the volume 8 prologue, she catches Regis having a PTSD nightmare and holds his face to her chest to calm him down, then goads [[ClingyJealousGirl Altina]] into doing it. Unfortunately for Regis, Altina was still wearing her armor at the time.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In volume 14, [[spoiler: she detects a strange odor in the water source for the Belgaria war-camp. Rather than report it, she covers the odor with some kind of perfume fragrance. Said odor turns out to be poison placed in the water by Hispania's forces.]]
* RapeAsDrama: She gets sexually assaulted in Volume 2 by a very corrupt military inspector, and his brutish bodyguard. When she runs to Regis for aid, Regis keeps them occupied until Altina shows up, and kicks the ass of the inspector who is armed with a gun, with one arm in a sling! Eric, Regis's bodyguard and retainer (appointed by Altina) took out the inspector's bodyguard with a sword.
* ShipperOnDeck: She ''really'' wants Regis and Altina to get together, but knowing the direct route is not going to work, she [[TheGadfly shamelessly teases them into it.]]
* TheStoic: In times when she's around people she doesn't know or particularly like, she shuts down her ability to emote, and says very little.
* TheTease: She comes on to Regis very strongly, and she can get him really worked up without even removing one stitch of clothing.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Altina. Volume 7.5 reveals that she ''outright volunteered to follow Altina to the front lines.''
* YouAreNotAlone: She says this word for word to Regis to help him cope with the burden of his position.

!!Jerome:

The former commander of the border regiment assigned to Altina. He does not like being under her command one bit. Still, he submits to her authority, not because of her rank or title, [[spoiler: but because she beat him in a duel.]]

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Is a firm believer in this approach.
* BlackKnight: Fits most aspects of this trope. He even paints his armor black.
* BladeOnAStick: His weapon of choice is a spear.
* CombatPragmatist: He will do just about anything to win on the battlefield, and actually likes Regis's more morally ambiguous strategies.
* DrillSergeantNasty: He plays this as straight as they come. He calls Regis "trash" constantly, but Regis is ''useful'' trash.
* AFatherToHisMen: If you can make it through his training regimen, he will provide and protect you. He even treated Regis kindly when the latter had a very high fever, due to collapsing from overwork. Still, he doesn't like it when people point it out.
* InsultBackfire: Receives one in Volume 3. An imperial knight accuses him of abandoning all chivalry after Jerome set his men on fire before attacking him. [[spoiler: Said knight just moments prior lead 1000 cavalry men on horseback to attack Altina, Regis and three other people on three horses.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Comes across as brutish and brash, but there's no one else you'd want at you'd want more at your back on the battlefield. [[spoiler: He even forfeited the duel with Altina when his sparring weapon broke, despite being easily able to defeat her.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: He doesn't suffer from HonorBeforeReason, but he is still an official knight of Belgaria.
* NoodleIncident: Something in his past, that he doesn't want to talk or hear about, caused his family to lose their noble status.

!!Eric Michael de Blanchard:
A knight in training that gets assigned to be Regis and Altina's bodyguard. He specifically requests the position because he has admired Regis since being saved by his tactics during a losing battle.

* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Regis's life by taking down the bodyguard of a corrupt military inspector who was chasing and trying to kill Regis to stop him from testifying about an attempted rape.
* BodyguardingABadass: Guarding Altina certainly counts..
* GameBreakingInjury. It is revealed in Volume 8, that the crossbow bolt he took to the shoulder caused nerve damage, making him unable to wield a sword, or any heavy weapon, again. In fact, he equates his arm-strength to that of a child.
* HeroesPreferSwords: He wields a sword very well as his weapon of choice.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: He was able to defeat a professional, military trained bodyguard with a single sword strike without killing the latter.
* SweetPollyOliver: Heavily implied in volume 3. Eric questions Regis a great deal about "an acquaintance" that is worried because she's a female from a noble house with no male heirs, and also shows many hints like bathing/changing alone, and being embarrassed when Regis changes in the same room.
* TakingTheBullet: Took a crossbow bolt aimed at Regis and Altina in volume 5. Although he lives, it takes him out of the action for the rest of the book, much to his annoyance.
* ThatMakesMeFeelAngry: He described to Regis how he was enraged at the behavior of the military inspector and the bodyguard that were sent to audit Altina's forces, and deliver orders to capture [[spoiler: Fort Volk]] in volume 2.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Regis and Altina.

!!Bastian:

Third born child of the emperor, Bastian left the DecadentCourt of Belgaria to go and become a student in Britannia's school system.

* BadassBookworm: Surprisingly, he gets this from Regis. A flashback shows that Regis introduced him to the joys of reading. Bastian becomes inspired to be an author as a result. (Which is what he was studying in Britannia.)

* DefeatMeansFriendship: He signs a formal treaty with Altina to help fight the Germanium Federation which is a mutual enemy, after being defeated and captured.
* EnemyMine: To an extent. While he will gladly work with Altina and Regis, who have both earned his respect due to their upfront honesty, and bold cunning respectively, he holds no love for the Belgarian Empire.
* HeelFaceTurn: Though never truly a heel, he goes from being blindly antagonistic to Altina's brigade to grudging respect bordering on true friendship once he gets to know Altina and Regis.
* VillainRespect: Although not really a villain, he has great respect for Regis's brilliant strategic mind, Altina's courage and forthrightness, and the very quick and efficient way he was captured. A way that had very few, if any, casualties on either side.

!!General Weingartner:
The Commander of Fort Volk, a 55-year-old war veteran who was overseeing Fort Volk for 12 years at the beginning of Volume 2.

* AFatherToHisMen: He truly cares about the men under his command, so much so that he[[spoiler: surrendered to Regis and Altina for the sake of his troops at Fort Volk.]]
* NobleDemon: He may be an enemy soldier to the protagonists, but he's decent and honorable.
* VillainRespect: Although not villainous, he is an enemy officer. Still, he congratulates Regis's brilliant and unorthodox strategic thinking as well as Altina's strength and courage.

A young, hotheaded commander under Weingartner. Leader of the green bronze knights.

* LeeroyJenkins: Runs out of Fort Volk and attacks Jerome head on with no plan, preparation or backup. Granted, this is after three days of continuous bombardment by cannon fire, day and night.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: Thought he could take out Jerome and the Black Knights easily. He was wrong.

!!Inspector Becker:

A military inspector from a minor noble house sent to Altina's regiment for the purposes of auditing her unit, and delivering orders, signed by Prince Latrielle, to seize Fort Volk.

* AxeCrazy: By the time volume 11 rolls around, he's totally, murderously, batshit insane. [[spoiler: It's only because of his father's aristocratic connections that he's put in charge of the Empire's secret police.]]
* BerserkButton: He crashes into a toddler because he's not watching where he's going. Said toddler was holding his food at the time which made Becker's uniform dirty. This was enough to send Becker into a murderous rage, complete with bloodshot eyes.
* TheBusCameBack: He returns to the story, and in a ''big'' way in Volume 11. [[spoiler: He's leading the secret police and orders open murder on anyone he doesn't like, trying to rationalize it as "weeding out traitors" afterwards.]]
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Despite not being in a corporation, he holds many of the traits, especially the "corrupt" part.
* {{Fingore}}: He runs afoul of Prince Bastian, and as a result of pulling a gun on the prince, he loses his trigger finger.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Called Altina's regiment "rude" because he had to walk from a train station to the scheduled pick up point despite the fact that he arrived several days early, and had Regis not anticipated his early arrival, would have killed a toddler because he crashed into said toddler.
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Granted Altina is insanely strong, still, one punch in the face, resulting in a bloody nose, and he acts like he's been mortally wounded.
* TheNeidermeyer: Fits this to a T. He firmly believes that any order from the Empire, even an order to engage in an obvious suicidal charge, is so glorious that the soldiers should feel honored just to hear it, and the merits of such orders should never be called into question, as long as he's not on the list of people who has to carry it out, that is.
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: He engages in a great many villainous and criminal acts in volume 2, including attempts to extort bribes from Regis. Regis holds his nose and turns a blind eye to all of them, including threatening a toddler with a sword, because he's the one who crashed into said toddler, all in order to prevent problems with the Empire. However, once he attempts to rape Clarisse, with his bodyguard keeping watch, Regis turns him over to Altina without hesitation of any kind.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Whenever he's enraged, his eyes become so bloodshot that they turn beet red.
* RoyalRapier: In addition to a derringer gun, he carries a rapier.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Despite being from a ''minor'' noble house, him being a noble allows him to bluster and push just about everyone in Altina's regiment around, that is until he tries to rape Clarisse, and finds himself in the fort's dungeons.
* SlasherSmile: In volume 11, he's described having a smile so large, it looks like it's sawing his head in two, as he's perpetrating violence.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He's from a ''minor'' noble house, yet doesn't bother to remember the names of people from families that he doesn't recognize.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Him being sent to Sierrick Fort's dungeon for the attempted rape of Clarisse is the last we see or hear of him.
* WouldHurtAChild: Upon arriving at the town at the base of Sierrick fort, he would have killed a toddler because he crashed into said toddler if Regis had not anticipated his early arrival.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Volume 11 implies he kills those under his command if they fail to follow his murderous orders to the letter.

Becker's bodyguard. He is every bit as unpleasant as his master.

!!Prince Latrielle:

The first born of the Emperor's children, and top contender for the throne, [[spoiler: until the events of Volume 3.]]

* AntagonisticOffspring: Combined with TheCoup, and RageBreakingPoint. In chapter 4 of Volume 7, he returns to the imperial palace with urgent news regarding the war with High Britannia. After witnessing a long list of debased debauchery occurring without regard for the lives of the soldiers on the front lines, including his own, he finally snaps after seeing the Emperor in bed with not one, but ''two'' concubines, all of them both ignoring the urgency of the situation, and openly boasting of spending the imperial military budget on frivolities like vacation palaces, and naming the ''yet unborn'' child of the concubine the heir which means, ''at best'' 15 years of rampant debauchery, at a time when The Empire isn't guaranteed to last the next 15 ''days!'' [[spoiler: Latrielle murders both the Emperor and one concubine with his sword while Germain throws a dagger at the other one. [[RevolvingDoorRevolution It is revealed that the current emperor murdered the previous emperor the same way, for the exact same reasons, except that the last emperor was stabbed in the back.]]]]
* BeAllMySinsRemembered: As he's being cheered ascending to the throne, he hallucinates corpses of all his victims, both direct and indirect, pointing and accusing him as he climbs the stairs to the throne, with him literally stepping over them.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: He lets himself be stabbed by Oswald, to grab Oswald and keep him from dodging a deadly blow.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Even if he was completely unaware that Regis is Altina's most important person, expecting that Altina would simply sit back and take it quietly when he not only tried to assassinate Regis, but sent a headless corpse in his stead with a flimsy cover story that Regis died in battle with High Brittania is the height of folly, especially considering Latrielle's long, sordid history of provoking her.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The way he scoops up Regis to share his horse [[spoiler: and chase after Margeret and Oswald]] is quite suggestive, and the fans don't hesitate to point this out in the comments.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Make no mistake, this character is clearly villainous, but he is utterly disgusted and outright ''enraged'' by the tactics of Oswald, who happily turns his own soldiers into bombs, by having them hide inside gunpowder barrels, with orders to light them when the enemy comes to confiscate them. He dubs Oswald a "poisonous snake." He is also utterly incensed to see the entire castle engaged in utter debauchery while a war is going on just outside with the Empire's very existence in peril, and completely snaps when The Emperor himself treats it like a trivial matter.
* EvilPrince: Is the one directly responsible for not only sending Altina to the front lines, but signed the orders to attack Fort Volk in Volume 2, hoping she would be completely crushed, if not outright killed. He is also the one who chose the corrupt military inspector that was sent to audit her regiment, and make sure the order was carried out. [[spoiler:He also kills his own father to claim the throne. Though the old man had it coming.]]
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:His left eye is rendered blind by the Mercenary King Gilbet's venom-laced trident. The doctor tending to him warns him that his right eye will gradually lose sight as well.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: One of his few redeeming characteristics is that, as a whole, he does care about the well being of the soldiers ''under his command.'' [[spoiler:One of the reasons he finally snaps and kills his father is because the latter doesn't.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: He pretends to be cordial and polite, but he's really a borderline psychopath who is constantly scheming and plotting new and interesting ways to murder people and get away with it, in his quest for power. Being a close relative won't protect you. [[spoiler: He already murdered at least one of his siblings through constant poisoning over years.]]
* HeelRealization: Of sorts. His defeat by the Mercenary King made him realize that a constant state of war is ''not'' the best thing for Belgaria, still, he's dead set on building up the military as much as possible. Considering that Belgaria is literally surrounded by enemies, through his own actions, there is little other alternative.
* IfICantHaveYou: When Regis politely declines becoming his Chief Strategist, and requests going back to Altina, as promised, Latrielle immediately considers Regis too dangerous to live, tears up the letters of approval he wrote highlighting Regis's accmplishments in the war with High Brittania, and orders Regis be killed. [[spoiler: Of course, Franziska and Jessica got to Regis first, but Latrielle doesn't know that.]]
* IKnowYouKnowIKnow: He comes right out and tells Regis that he's well aware both Altina and Regis want to boot him of the Belgaria throne in volume 8.
* InadequateInheritor: Latrielle is scared the Emperor will see him like this, not because of his words, actions, or personality, but because of a crippling war wound, as the Emperor does have a history of rejecting previous heirs due to physical deformities. He later proves the emperor right, in terms of character.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: The Emperor and his concubines can't complain about his actions at the end of Volume 7. Goes double for Oswald at the end of Volume 10.
* KlingonPromotion: In Chapter 4 of Volume 7, [[spoiler: he takes the throne by killing the Emperor, [[RevolvingDoorRevolution just like the Emperor killed his predecessor.]]]]
* KnightTemplar: He is so utterly convinced that his way of doing things is the correct approach to handling the Belgaria Empire that he will kill anyone and everyone who opposes him. He is still willing to be tolerant of other opinions, but will bring lethal force to bear upon opposing acts.
* MadeOfTemptation: In a non-sexual manner. In volme 10, Regis notes that his passion, charisma, and overwhelming force of personality would have had him drop to his knees and swear fealty on the spot if Altina hadn't secured his loyalty first.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: Latrielle is an expert at this. Germaine is not far behind.
* PetTheDog: When he meets Regis in Volume 6, among other things that he does, he promotes Altina to General, and Regis to Third Lieutenant so they won't have any problems executing Regis's strategy to deal with High Britannia. While this doesn't normally merit PetTheDog, Latrielle ''also'' grants Regis the title of Chevalier, making him a noble. When Regis becomes uncomfortable with the title because he doesn't think nobility suits him, Latrielle agrees, and says the rank and title are not ''high enough'' to acknowledge his accomplishments. Of note, Latrielle tried to have the first army kill Altina and Regis in Volume 3 for rescuing "Auguste" and interfering with his plans.
* TheScapegoat: Surprisingly. [[spoiler: Volume 7.5 reveals that it's not Latrielle who poisoned Auguste to death, but the Crown Empress, and in such a way as to make rumors of Prince Latrielle being responsible unavoidable, though there's no direct proof of her involvement, or his.]]
* SecretStabWound: PlayedWith. While everyone knows Latrielle was wounded in a battle with the Mercenary King, he's hiding that the wound was poisoned [[spoiler: and will eventually cost him his vision.]]
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: He challenges Regis to a game of chess in Volume 3, and although he does well, he lost.
* SmugSnake: He thinks he's a much better swordsman, politician, and ruler than he actually is. Although he is quite skilled, Altina only struggled against him due to a prior injury.
* StartXToStopX: His idea of bringing the peace that will last a 1000 years, is to launch a world war and capture all the neighboring countries, then turn his guns inward and abolishing the noble's private armies to make the imperial army answer to the royal court alone, and to prevent the army getting too comfortable with the local governors, constantly rotating out the officers.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: He makes the same exact mistake that Oswald and High Britannia did. He thinks that just because he and his army have their hands on Brittania's latest rifle models and have started mass-producing Belgarian counterparts, that they can outright conquer all the surrounding nations in just two years and quell all dissent, without Regis's brilliant tactical and strategic insight.
* TranquilFury: When he hits his RageBreakingPoint at the end of Volume 7 after witnessing his father's careless debauchery and lack of concern for Belgaria's plight he suddenly calms down, has an epiphany of who is the Empire's true enemy [[spoiler:and murders the Emperor's manipulative concubine in cold blood. He then just as calmly kills the Emperor himself.]]
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: [[spoiler: He's officially anointed Emperor of Belgaria in chapter 1 of Volume 12. The fact that his mother's still in hiding doesn't clue him in that he's in a very precarious situation.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: At the start of Volume 6, he tells his strategist, Germain, that he wants to make Belgaria the best country in the world, with a military so mighty that no-one would ever dare challenge them again, among other reforms. (Namely, actually punishing corrupt nobles).
* VillainHasAPoint: When confronted about the inherent inequity of treatment between the aristocracy and the commoners, and how the nobles abuse the peasants as a result, Latrielle agrees, but specifically points out that a proper education system for the ''entire country'' that could even the playing field, and foster the inherent talents of the commoners is a physical, financial, and practical impossibility, and he's right. Regis does later agree with the sentiment, but does point out an alternative, thanks to the recent invention of the printing press. His plan requires giving hope to the commoners first, or they're not likely to ''want'' to level the playing field and get themselves involved.
* WarForFunAndProfit: Tells Altina in Volume 3 that he aims to keep Belgaria in a constant state of war with its neighbors, purely for the sake of justifying the constant build up of the military.
* WeCanRuleTogether: He offers Regis the chance to be his top strategist thrice. Once in Volume 3, once in volume 6, and once in Volume 8. [[spoiler: Regis accepts in volume 8 both to spy on Latrielle and because [[EnemyMine Latrielle needs him to finish routing the High Britannia Army]] from one of Belgaria's castles.]] He makes his final official appeal to Regis in Volume 10, after their significant joint victory. He takes Regis ''very politely'' declining him very, very poorly.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Tries to market himself as this, Altina doesn't buy it for a moment. At the start of Volume 6, it would ultimately prove true. Even ''he'' believes he's genuinely acting in Belgaria's best interests. [[spoiler:When he snaps and kills the Emperor and his concubines, it's not (entirely) due to ambition, but mainly because he realizes that getting rid of the Emperor as soon as possible is crucial to Belgaria's survival.]]
* WhatWereYouThinking: He voices this sentiment towards Altina when he gets word of her coming for him, in force, at the end of Volume 11. [[NeverMyFault He completely fails to comprehend why Altina's so murderously angry at him, despite his past of provoking her, and sending a headless corpse to her fort with Regis's name on it.]]
* YouHaveFailedMe: Played with. When his subordinate strategist failed to eliminate Altina at the end of Volume 3, Lattrielle called himself a "benevolent man" by sparing him. The fact that the strategist was terrified of being killed for failure, however, would tend to indicate that Latrielle, or the other royals of Belgaria do indeed tend to take out their frustrations on their staff. Further, he equates the man's life to a cup of wine, which he happily pours out in front of him to make the point.

Prince Latrielle's strategist.

* CrazyPrepared: At the end of Volume 7 he [[spoiler:took the liberty of bribing the maids ''just in case'' Latrielle assassinated the Emperor. What makes this crazy is that neither Latrielle nor Germain had any intention or plan to kill the Emperor at first -- but Germain bribed the maids anyway.]]
* DiseaseBleach: The sheer terror of being executed by Latrielle for failing to defeat Regis, and capture or kill Altina and "Prince Auguste" as well as their traveling companions turns his hair white at the end of Volume 3.
* DragonInChief: He becomes this as a result of Latrielle's [[spoiler: crippling injury that will eventually leave him completely blind.]]
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Is utterly convinced that Latrielle is the only man who can save the country of Belgaria from imminent destruction, and turns a blind eye to all of Latrielle's faults.

* ForJustice: He truly believes carrying out Latrielle's orders to abduct Auguste is the right and just thing to do.
* HonorBeforeReason: Insists on the Knight "chivalric code" at all times.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Condemns Jerome for "abandoning chivalry" because the latter, with just 500 cavalry attacked, and defeated, his 1000 mounted knights by setting them on fire, but completely ignores the fact that he ordered his "honorable" knights, numbering 1000, to attack five people sharing three horses without even an arrest warrant.
* PrideBeforeAFall: He was so enamored by the First Army's reputation as the strongest army in the country, that he never considered someone could beat him.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Killed off shortly after his introduction.

The primary antagonist of volume 4. She is the leader of the "pro-war" movement in High Britannia and tries to kill Elizabeth in order to ascend to the throne. [[spoiler: Though she fails to kill Elizabeth, she does succeed in taking the throne by keeping Elizabeth from reaching the capital city in time.]]

* DeathSeeker: In chapter 3 of volume 9, it's revealed that the real reason she forged ahead with declaring war against Belgaria, the strongest in-universe nation in the world, is that she wants to die, in spectacular fashion, because she's that bored. She doesn't have any other objective. Although amused by the struggle, she just ultimately wants it all to end.
* DrivenToSuicide: After Oswald is defeated and killed in a ''fair'' duel, rather than let herself be captured to answer for her crimes, she stabs herself with a hidden dagger. [[CruelMercy Regis saves her life and insists she live to answer for her actions.]]

* FreudianExcuse: It's a doozy, bordering on WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds territory. Growing up as a child, she was forbidden from doing anything "improper" or that ''might'' put her in danger. Going to school? Forbidden, an assassin might come after you, you get a horrifically boring personal tutor. Playing with children her own age? Forget it, what if you're hurt. Having a hobby like knitting, cooking, or any kind of arts and craft? Ridiculous! A high noble and possible queen candidate can't be seen doing those kinds of things, it's beneath her! Even "trashy" romance and fiction novels or any kind of enjoyable book was banned from her household. The only "entertainment" she had were the "classics", ie, Shakespearean-type tragedies, which she was compelled to read and memorize. By the time she entered adulthood, she was so utterly bored to tears that she ultimately decided that if society liked Shakespearean tragedies that much, then she would make the whole country of Britannia into one.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: The reason she launched a war on Belgaria is that she thinks she's "special" and the conflict would be gloriously highlighted in the history books. She did not take it well when Regis not only pointed out how '''common''' her condition is, but that the whole war she launched would most likely only make a line or two in the history books afterwards.
* ItAmusedMe: Her highly unstable behavior serves one purpose, and only one purpose, to get the maximum amusement she can out of any situation, good or bad, though mostly bad.

* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: He can match Bastian in raw strength. Remember, Bastian can stop a charging bull bare-handed.
* DevilInPlainSight: He's a particularly nasty piece of work, doesn't bother to hide it, yet almost nobody seems to notice.

* TheSociopath: Fits the trope to the letter. He is completely incapable of feeling any emotion except pleasure at the suffering of others, or rage at his own. He is utterly devoted to Margaret because she shares this mindset.
* SomebodySetUpUsTheBomb: He unknowingly took a page out of Regis's playbook and used a similar tactic on Latrielle, however, he showed that he is more than happy to sacrifice his soldier(s) in the process.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: He hates Basitin because Basitin pointed a gun at Margaret while Margaret was threatening Elizabeth's life in Volume 4. He's even gone so far as to keep a wound he received from Basitin during their duel open, and bleeding, over half a month to remind himself of his hatred.

* PrideBeforeAFall: Undefeated tactical strategist in the academy. Head strategist of the fifth division. Second in command at the fifth division. Heir to a long noble bloodline. Completely insufferable sot. Loses all of it in a single battle at the end of Volume 5.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: After a completely unblemished many year record of strategic victories in mock combat simulations (the one where he beat Regis most likely rigged), he came to believe he's infallible. [[spoiler: He's not, and the seventh division paid for it, dearly.]]

* ImprobableAimingSkills: She shoots a Germanium Federation soldier turned bandit ''through the eye'' with her crossbow, fully intending to do so, without carefully aiming first.
* LeeroyJenkins: Even more than Altina. She rushes in to battle, in close combat, without preparation, strategy, or back up despite her specialty being ambush, the crossbow, and agility.
* ShamefulStrip: At the end of Volume 8, she and both her sisters are surrounded by Germanium Soldiers turned brigand, and the leader outright ''demands'' that she remove all her clothing, not just to humiliate her, [[RapeAsDrama but so that he and his merry band can have some fun.]]
* SuicidalOverconfidence: Even though her own brother, Gilbert, constantly scolds her that anything can happen in battle, she's completely convinced that she'll win any fight she gets into. Had it not been for Altina's sword breaking in Volume 5, Altina may well have killed her.

* BadassFamily: Every one of his siblings, including himself, is someone to be reckoned with, even the youngest, Martina, who is only 10 years old.
* BoxedCrook: He pretty much becomes this at the start of Volume 8. Altina offers him his life in exchange for serving her, faithfully, as opposed to the ransom or execution that normally occurs with captured enemy soldiers. Captured mercenaries usually get execution.
* CombatPragmatist: His actions may be morally dubious, but as a mercenary, victory is all that matters.
* GeniusBruiser: While he lacks any formal education, and hasn't gotten his hands on books like Regis, it's a suicidal error in judgement to think he's stupid. Notably, his long experience in battle and his instincts has him not only see through Regis's strategy in volume 7, but be ''completely able to counter it.'' Further, he takes very reasonable precautions to prevent the gunpowder and other explosive supplies his group is carrying from becoming victim to stray fire and causing unintended explosions.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler: When summarily beat down by Altina, having his trident utterly obliterated by a fully re-forged Quatre-Tonne, he surrenders quietly, with nothing but the highest respect for her strength and skill.]]
* IOweYouMyLife: To Enzo Smith after the latter covered for him so he wouldn't be struck down by Altina's guards for picking up a weapon without permission.
* LaughingMad: He breaks down and laughs at Altina when he hears about Latrielle taking the throne because she won't be able to keep her ''very sincere'' promise to make the mercenary band, Renard Pendu, an independent country.
* MartialPacifist: Surprisingly. Unlike Franziska, he only kills because the alternative is his death, or the death of his loved ones. He does not like it.

* ProngsOfPoseidon: Type 4. His WeaponOfChoice is a poisoned trident with which he specializes in disarming opponents.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Turns out the mercenary group, Renard Pendu is this, and he's its leader.
* TheStoic: He is always calm and composed, and doesn't let his emotions show or get the better of him.
* TaughtByExperience: He's got a long, distinguished record as the lead mercenary of Renard Pendu, and it shows. He's the first antagonist to ''ever'' be able to effectively counter one of Regis's strategies.
* VillainRespect: He praises Jerome's fighting capability after briefly engaging the latter in single combat, although both of them withdraw without harming each other. Better, he has nothing but the highest respect for Regis's brilliant strategic thinking, despite being only the ''second'' character to actually see through it, and the first to actually succeed in countering it, and for Altina's impressive swordsmanship.

Franziska's older sister and the head strategist of the mercenary band, Renard Pendu.

* HeelFaceMole: [[spoiler: She infiltrates the Belgarian army under Latrielle, disguised as a maid.]]
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Her intelligence gathering or "divination" is so acute she knows things that only the audience should, like the fact that Margeret is motivated purely by boredom, or Regis has aligned with Latrielle. It's almost as if she's somehow got herself a copy of the earlier volumes and read them. The reason her ability is not infallable is that she doesn't have the "future editions."
* {{Precognition}}: She uses the pseudo-science of astrology to "divine" the movements of the movers and shakers in the world setting. Truthfully, it's merely a cover for her exceptional intelligence gathering capabilities, though it's not infallible, as the end of volume 7 reveals.

* TheCorrupter: Even her retainers dub her a poisonous snake who makes the Serpent that tempted Eve pale in comparison.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: She is so impatient to see Latrielle take the throne in the Volume 7.5 prequel, that she's very sloppy in her methods, and has to be reminded about appearances.
* DirtyCoward: When word gets out that Latrielle murdered the Emperor, a mere day before Latrielle's coronation, she makes herself scarce, knowing full well she'd be implicated too.
* DystopiaJustifiesTheMeans: She is willing to implement any scheme or ploy that she thinks will grant her bloodline, and nobility in general, a stranglehold in Belgaria's power structure, regardless of the short or long term consequences.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Her name is not mentioned in Volume 7.5, she's only adressed as "Empress."
* EvilMatriarch: She's the Crown Empress, and in order to secure Latrielle takes the throne, she ''openly'' orders the assassination of every rival, starting with Prince Auguste.
* FeelingOppressedByTheirExistence: Having Latrielle exile Altina to the front lines wasn't enough to appease her. She wants Altina to become an {{Unperson}}. Even hearing Altina's name is enough to sour her mood.

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Implied. He's a highly decorated general, the narration notes he's very competent in battle, and he rules the Germanium Federation.
* BerserkButton: If any of his soldiers or advisors recommend retreat, or worse surrender, for any reason, he immediately goes into a cataleptic rage.
* BlingOfWar: He's introduced decked out in a fine military uniform with a chest full of medals.
* DoggedNiceGuy: "Nice" is debatable, but he's clearly trying to woo Margaret's favor by doting on her with gifts, and entertainment. She finds it all boring and tells him, to his face, that she throws it away.
* GloryHound: All he cares about is getting as much glory for himself as possible. This makes it ''very'' easy to lead him into a trap or ambush. Something Regis exploits to its fullest in volume 10.
* HopelessSuitor: He's smitten with Margaret Steelheart. She's completely unmoved.
* HormoneAddledTeenager: Despite being 25, he lets his gonads do his thinking for him, and falls for Margeret, letting himself and his army become a spectacle of death for her amusement.
* HumiliationConga: A truly glorious and satisfying one occurs in the final chapters of Volume 10. Having his delusions of glory dashed over and over again, he's left with no choice but to throw his armor away and smack the rising river water with his sword in impotent rage, and because of his despicable use of human shields, he ''knows'' he has no way to negotiate an honorable surrender for himself or his men.
* MilesGloriosus: He ''thinks'' he's a great general and brilliant strategist, able to utterly curbstomp the Belgarian First army with ease. In reality, he's a clown, blindly charging out to the battlefield due to Margeret lifting her skirt to ShowSomeLeg.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: He thinks that just because he's got his hands on the new High Britanian rifles, and has numerical superiority, his army is unstoppable, and the Belgarians he's chosen to antagonize can only charge like feral beasts. He's completely wrong. To make matters worse, he ''knew'' that Belgaria's top strategist, Regis, was going to be directing the enemy army, and Regis is ''famous'' at this point for his brilliant, often unorthodox, and highly effective strategies.
* ThisCannotBe: All he can do as his every move and order was foreseen and countered by Regis's bold strategy is shout "Impossible!" at the top of his lungs, while his troops are in full disarray and being worn down piece by piece.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: To the point of IRejectYourReality. He constantly tells himself that Regis seeing through him and coming up with overwhelmingly competent strategies and tactics were all "just a fluke."
* UnwittingPawn: He's so hormone addled for Margeret, that he doesn't realize how much she led him around by the nose until over an hour after she's left him to twist in the wind, with Belgaria's army rightly pissed due to his comitting numerous war atrocities, even by the in-universe standards.
* VillainousBreakdown: When his aides recommend retreat as his forces start getting torn appart by the First Army, he completely loses his composure and orders a suicidal charge into a meat-grider that Regis set up beforehand. After getting cocky because the Belgarian army withdrew, he gets a much bigger breakdown when a flash-flood annihilates his infantry, negates the advantage of his cavalry, and leaves him trapped in the Belgarian fortress he occupied, watching helplessly as the river waters continue to rise.

!!Lagenbolt Commander Ricks:

* GloryHound: Despite the orders of his Lagonbalt king, he takes to the field, personally, so he can make a name for himself, by boasting the highest kill count. It doesn't matter to him if his kills are soldiers or unarmed civilians.
* InTheBack: Because he was tormenting a lone Belgarian soldier trying to defend unarmed Belgarian citizens, he neglected the Belgarian cavalry coming up behind him, who threw a lance through his chest from behind to save their loyal citizens.
* LaserGuidedKarma: He attacked civilians, used human shields, and tormented a lone Belgarian soldier protecting unarmed civilians. He gets killed with a spear from behind, and his thuggish army is torn to pieces while in disarray.
* MisplacedRetribution: Because Regis was able to read through his king's ''very simplistic'' movements, and take his army apart, he takes the troops under his command to go after unarmed Belgarian citizens, including women and children, even infants. After the majority of those troops get taken out by a lone, brave Belgarian soldier, he tries to take said soldier down through a death of a thousand cuts. Of course, he neglects the Belgarian cavalry reinforcements that Regis sent to guard the fleeing civilian captives bearing down on him while he does it.

** GoneHorriblyRight: He winds up being Altina's strategist, and is both feared and respected by friend and foe alike, for the most part.
* HappilyMarried: She's married to a blacksmith.
* MeaningfulName: Her family name is "Smith" and she's married to one.
* MyGreatestFailure: Instead of fostering Regis's inherent talents, ie, his exceptionally keen intellect, she, as a 12-year-old child with no parents or extended family, constantly called him "useless" so she could continue working as a maid. This wound up crushing his self-worth.

Vanessa's husband. Reputed to be the best blacksmith in the continent, by Vanessa anyway.

* TheBlacksmith: He's a blacksmith.
* TheBrute: He is not very skilled in social graces. He's got far more in terms of muscle than brains, and that's what Vanessa likes about him. Still, acting that way before Princess Altina had the entire workshop scared pale, including Vanessa.
* BrutalHonesty: He does not mince words regarding Quatre Tonne's condition. Altina prefers it that way.
* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: Surprisingly, his strength exceeds even Altina's. He was able to draw Quatre Tonne, a hundred pound weapon, from its sheath like a longsword.
* MacGuffinDeliveryService: He's tasked with delivering the reforged Quatre-Tonne to Altina in volume 7.
* MusclesAreMeaningful: He is noted to have the physique of a bear, and can draw Quatre-Tonne like a longsword.
* SherlockScan: He tells Gilbert that he can tell Gilbert prefers tridents due to his muscle structure.

!!Lieutenant General Barguesonne:
The commanding officer of the Belgarian army fifth division.

* BrutalHonesty: Shut down Vincent hard when Vincent tried to blame Regis for his own failures.
* CommanderContrarian: He debunked and refused Regis's strategic advice in favor of Vincent's. He would come to regret this.
* ItsAllMyFault: Took responsibility for the disaster that happened to the fifth division as a result of choosing Vincent's strategy over Regis's.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: He would ultimately sacrifice his life so the seventh division could fight another day.
* SergeantRock: Abrasive, but loved by the men of the fifth division.

A conscripted soldier fighting in the fifth division.

* ActionSurvivor: One of the few infantry who actually survived Vincent's "brilliant" strategy.
* TheDeterminator: Despite being shot so many times that he looks like a sponge, he kept right on going. Altina wonders how he's still alive.
* MadeOfIron: Shot by Britannia's guns, stabbed with spears by the shield carriers, bandaged and bloodied, he still ran to Altina and Regis to ask for them to save his family.
* MauveShirt: He's of lowly infantry, yet he's got a name and backstory.

!!Narissa:
A fishing girl Regis encounters in Chapter 2 of Volume 6. He specifically hires her to help him scout out the enemy's navy.

* BullyingADragon: Despite knowing Altina's the fourth princess (because Regis specifically introduces her as such), she decides to taunt her regarding her relationship with Regis. As her childhood friend points out, this could ''easily'' lead to visiting a guillotine, if Altina wasn't particularly kind and forgiving.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With her sailing partner "Fippo."
* TheGadfly: Teases Regis and Altina regarding their romantic relationship or lack thereof. She's lucky Altina is a very gentle and kind soul, as had Narissa taunted any other royal, she could easily have been killed, legally.
* GeniusDitz: She's a total master when it comes to sailing and navigation. She's completely clueless in just about everything else, including proper etiquette when dealing with Royalty.
* TheNickNamer: Loves to shorten people's names for her own convenience.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Immediately clings to Regis's arm when Altina arrives, much to his chagrin.

A "liberal" aristocrat encountered by Bastian while recouperating from the wounds he received in Volume 4.

* ActualPacifist: He doesn't raise a weapon, even in self-defense.
* AristocratsAreEvil: Averted for himself, but he clearly believes this for the caste system, as a whole.
* HeroicSacrifice: Combined with literally TakingTheBullet. He dives in front of Elizabeth to save her life from a gun-toting, self righteous thug out to kill Belgarians purely out of FantasticRacism.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: To fit with the stereotypical view of liberalism, he's an intellectual that wears glasses.
* TakeMeInstead: He tries this tactic to stall "Loyal Soldiers," a self-righteous gang of bullying thugs so the rest of the Belgarian civilians (and Princess Elizabeth) can flee to safety. Bastian [[BigDamnHeroes vetoes that idea.]]
* TakeUpMySword: In a sense. He hands off a book where he wrote his theories and governmental policy ideas to Bastian before he dies.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Killed off in the same chapter as he was introduced.

The matron of the trading house where Bastian finds himself recuperating from the events of Volume 4.

* AnEntrepreneurIsYou: She runs a merchant house and trading company.
* AFriendInNeed: She is ultimately responsible for Bastian and Princess Elizabeth being fished out of the Grey River, and loaned him a bed where he could recover from his wounds.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: She gives a few to Elizabeth and Bastian, [[spoiler: knowing full well they're royalty, but pretending she doesn't.]] Bastian manages to see through one of them.
