* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was a foster kid, but had a loving family she considered her own. However, they became Sick and died when she was still very young, leaving her to find their dead bodies in their bedroom. Shortly after this, her younger sister was taken away by the Last Men due to her being a hybrid. As she was ForcedToWatch as they took her away, ignoring her protests and simply leaving her behind, all she could do was [[HowlOfSorrow simply scream]] as she broke down in despair. It's implied that her helplessness in this loss (as well her sister being taken on the sole basis of being a hybrid) is what encouraged her to create the Animal Army; as a means to protect hybrid children and re-create a family again.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Downplayed in the show. While he's still rough around the edges and his backstory is kept intact, unlike in the comic, where Jepperd betrays Gus to the Last Men with the promise of seeing his wife again, he gets shot by them instead, preventing him from stopping their kidnapping of Gus. He also warms up to Gus and becomes a father figure to him far quicker compared to the comic.
