A deer hybrid raised in the wilderness and the main protagonist, Gus is a good hearted, cheerful and naive young boy who has little knowledge of the world around him as a result of his sheltered lifestyle.

  • Animal-Eared Headband: His antlers is dead giveaway of him being a hybrid. In ''Weird Deer S**t", Jepperd crafts a make-shift helmet to disguise Gus's deer ears and horns when they have to go out in the market and public. While this briefly works, it requires Gus to keeps his ears completely still. He struggles to do this as he finds the market to be a massive sensory overload.
  • Artificial Human: In episode 7, he is revealed to have been created in a lab and is very likely the first-ever hybrid child.
  • Brats with Slingshots: Deconstructed. Gus has excellent aim with his slingshot and attempts to use it to defend himself on several occasions. However, at just ten years old, he doesn't have the strength to make the strikes actually hurt his opponents.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He knows nothing about his past, only that his "Pubba" (aka Dad) took him far away into the forest and barricaded them from the rest of the world, which his dad told him was dangerous. For a decade, he only knew his sheltered life. His dad later dies after they're spotted and he leaves the campsite to kill the man to keep Gus safe and comes back Sick. After this, Gus is left on his own for a year before leaving to find his mother, whom he was told couldn't be with him and still out there. In the season 1 finale, he learns the truth of his past: he was created in a lab by scientists as the very first of the hybrid children. He was on the verge of being taken by the government to be experimented on, but scientist Birdie (his "mother") grew to love him and was desperate to protect him. Along with Richard assisting (his "dad" who was the building's janitor), she broke Gus out of the lab and convinced Richard to adopt Gus as she stayed behind to destroy her research (which she warned could kill millions). This was how Richard and Gus ended up in the forest and how Birdie was separated from them.
  • Cheerful Child: He seems to be a happy kid overall, although he does sometimes have issues like nightmares as a result of everything he's endured.
  • Fish out of Water: As a result of having been sheltered in the woods for literally his entire life, he is unfamiliar with the outside world and has difficulty adjusting to it early on. He has slowly adapted to it over time, but even by the end, he has a bit of difficulty understanding certain concepts that are common sense to others.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A nice boy with blonde hair.
  • In-Series Nickname: He is given the nickname "Sweet Tooth" by Jepperd due to his love of sweets.
  • Morality Pet: He becomes this to Jepperd as well as Bear over the season.
  • Skilled, but Naive: He is quite crafty for his young age and rather smart, but he is still naive and unfamiliar with the outside world.
  • Sweet Tooth: Before he went to the “Outside” world, he was fond of drinking syrups and eating pancakes that his dad would make for him because of the sweet taste. Once exploring the world, he has an extreme fondness for candy and sweets, hence the nickname Jepperd gives him (which serves as the story's title).
  • Tagalong Kid: Becomes this to Jepperd early on in the story after deciding to leave his old home to explore the world.
  • You Can Talk?: All hybrids have so far been known to be mute. However, Gus and Wendy can speak fluent English but have been kept from public society for their own safety. (Bobby can speak in broken English, but needs translating from Wendy.) Hence, whenever Gus just meets someone, they assume he can't talk and are absolutely stunned that he can speak.

    Jepperd

Jepperd

Played by: Nonso Anozi

A lone drifter with a troubled past. He reluctantly accompanies Gus on his journey, who gives him the nickname of "Big Man".

  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed in the show. While he's still rough around the edges and his backstory is kept intact, the show did tweak his character. One major change was, in the comic, Jepperd betrays Gus to the Last Men with the promise of seeing his wife again, which would later turn out he specifically wanted to be given his dead wife's body. In the show, he doesn't betray Gus to the Last Men; he gets shot by them instead, allowing them to take Gus as Jepperd is too wounded to intervene. He also warms up to Gus and becomes a father figure to him far quicker compared to the comic.
  • Adaptational Job Change: His former occupation was a hockey player in the comic series, in this adaption he is an ex-football player.
  • The Big Guy: Gus's nickname for him is "Big Man" because of his large size.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He initially had a good life, but when his wife gave birth to their child during the Great Crumble, he discovered his baby was a hybrid and was distraught. By the time he gathered the courage to love his new family and went to be by their side, he found the government had already taken them away. Now alone and struggling to survive the harsh new world, he became a Last Man and poached hybrid children to get by, tearing families apart. He eventually left the organization and simply decided to survive on his own. While admitting he isn't proud of what he did, he firmly sticks to his past actions as being "what he needed to do to survive". However, it's implied that what he did still haunts him and his choice to help Gus is an attempt to ease his guilt (as well as a hope to rebuild his life again).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rough and can come across as abrasive and cold, but shows his true inner good as the show goes on. He initially only uses Gus for his own advantage and plans to ditch him as soon as he can, but becomes increasingly attached to him and grows to sincerely care for his well-being. This is cemented when Gus risks his life to save him from the Animal Army during their planned execution of him. By the season finale, he all but declares his intention to protect Gus and says he "doesn't want to lose him too".
  • Race Lift: Was a white man in the comic series.

    Bear

Bear

Played by: Stefania LaVie Owen

  • Action Girl: She first appeared along with Tiger saving Gus and Jepperd by attacking the Last Men with her daggers. It's also shown that, as part of the Animal Army training, she and her fellow members must regularly train for combat and battle.
  • Adult Hater: She claims to despise adults, due to the Last Men taking away her sister and destroyed her life. She nearly attempts to kill Jepperd (due to him being a former member of the Last Men) until Gus convinces her not to do so. Even then, she did not get along with Jepperd at all early on until Gus called them out on their constant bickering.
  • Adaptational Heroism: As the (former) leader of the Animal Army, she is much more goodhearted and far less Ax-Crazy than her comic book counterpart, Glebhelm.
  • Animal Motifs: Chooses the Bear as her animal representation in the Animal Army she created.
  • Broken Bird: Despite her tough girl exterior, it's implied the loss of her family (twice, counting the Animal Army that essentially threw her out) has left her heartbroken and all she wants is to reclaim that basic stability again.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was a foster kid, but had a loving family she considered her own. However, they became Sick and died when she was still very young, leaving her to find their dead bodies in their bedroom. Shortly after this, her younger sister was taken away by the Last Men due to her being a hybrid. As she was Forced to Watch as they took her away, ignoring her protests and leaving her behind all alone, all she could do was simply scream as she broke down in despair. It's implied that her helplessness in this loss (as well her sister being taken on the sole basis of being a hybrid) is what encouraged her to create the Animal Army; as a means to protect hybrid children and re-create a family again.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is this in spades.
  • Declaration of Protection: Created the Animal Army as its Rebel Leader as a means to defend and protect all hybrid children from the otherwise bigoted world. Once she gets thrown out, she all but declares to protect Gus from any harm.
  • Given Name Reveal: In the season 1 finale, she reveals her name is Becky.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Came dangerously close to this until Gus called her out on her increasing ruthlessness and how, in her own way, she was becoming no different than the Last Men. This served as a wake-up call for her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She may be rough around the edges, but is truly a good person with the best of intentions. In fact, this is what got her thrown out of the Animal Army as they felt she was losing her edge and becoming soft.
  • Morality Pet: Gus becomes this for her. It's possible he reminds her of her sister, who is the same age as he is.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Losing her beloved foster family did a number on her.

The leader of the Last Men and the main antagonist. He's a ruthless man who's willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.

  • Bald of Evil: He's a bald, merciless and cruel man who has no problem in killing others as long as it gets him what he wants.
  • Beard of Evil: In contrast with his clean head, he has a big, bushy beard.
  • Big Brother Bully: Towards his younger brother, Johnny.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He can come across as friendly and polite, but as it is quickly revealed, he is a ruthless, merciless and cruel monster who would do what it takes to get what he desires, even if that means killing others.
  • I Have Your Wife: He keeps Rani hostage to force Adi to work for him, making it very clear what will happen if he doesn’t get results.
  • Sinister Shades: He’s almost always seen wearing red sunglasses.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Him and his army hunt down, kill and experiment on the hybrid children without remorse, viewing them as animals instead of humans.
