Superman's younger cousin, Kara Zor-El survived the destruction of Krypton thanks to her father, Zor-El, putting a protective dome around Argo City that sent it hurtling into space. However, the citizens of Argo were quickly dying from Kryptonite poisoning, so before they died, Zor-El and his wife Alura placed their daughter in a spaceship and sent her to Earth where she could flourish under Superman's guidance.

At first acting as Superman's "secret weapon" while she developed her powers in secret under the assumed name of Linda Lee Danvers, Supergirl eventually burst onto the superhero scene as the Maid of Might.

She had a long and illustrious career fighting evil--she became best friends with fellow superheroine ComicBook/{{Batgirl}} I (Barbara), became a member of the ComicBook/LegionOfSuperHeroes (and struck up a romance with Brainiac 5), and even saved her parents from the past and helped them found New Krypton on the distant planet of Rokyn. She gained her own sidekicks in the form of Streaky the Super-Cat and Comet the Super-Horse and occasionally joined the Franchise/JusticeLeagueOfAmerica.

During that time Kara went from a fifteen-year-old orphan to a Stanhope graduate to a San Francisco new reporter to New Athens Experimental School guidance counselor to famous soap opera actress working in New York to college student majoring in Psychology and living in Chicago. She had become a self-assured, mature adult woman and maybe closer to Superman in age than ever before.

In the end, Kara died a hero. When the Anti-Monitor attempted to destroy TheMultiverse, she sacrificed her own life so that her cousin might live. In so doing, however, she severely set back the Anti-Monitor's plans, making victory possible for the heroes of the surviving Earths. The greatest tragedy of all, however, was that with the destruction of the Multiverse and changes to the timestream, Kara was erased from history, and no one at all remembered her heroic life and death.

During ''ComicBook/{{Convergence}}'', Kara was one of many individuals pulled from their respective timelines and universes and trapped in domed cities by Brainiac. Pulled before her death, Kara learned about her impending sacrifice being needed to stabilize the timeline, only [[spoiler: thanks to the combined efforts of her, the pre-Crisis Barry Allen, Hal Jordan as Parallax, and the pre-Flaspoint Superman, the original Multiverse was saved and Kara is no longer dead.]]

Kara's parents sent her to Earth because Argo City was dying. She lost her parents, her home and was dumped by her cousin into an orphanage that she hated. Often she felt torn because she wanted to live like a normal woman but her vast powers entailed great responsibilities. Said human befriends her, then [[spoiler: turns out to be [[SuperpoweredEvilSide the Silver Banshee,]] who is being hunted down by her father, the Black Banshee]]. After briefly being absorbed, body and soul, she fights her way out. Then she gets attacked again, while on a date. Oh, and the first man she falls in love with is H'el, who's manipulating her, using her affection for him to trick her into a brief FaceHeelTurn. Once Superman and Batman were able to undo the damage the LSV created, it seemed Saturn Queen was erased from existence...

Until, during ''ComicBook/InfiniteCrisis'', this Saturn Queen's universe was briefly restored along with the original Multiverse. When her Earth was destroyed again, Saturn Queen somehow survived and was lost inside the Phantom Zone. There she found a displaced version of Ultraman, the evil Antimatter Universe version of Superman. After brainwashing him into believing she was his mother, the two escaped from the Phantom Zone into the bottle city of Kandor and took over. When Supergirl and Power Girl appeared in Kandor as Flamebird and Nightwing, Saturn Queen tried to brainwash Supergirl into becoming Ultraman's bride.

Deceilia is an alien born with a strange mutation that earned her emnity on an unknown world. Temperamental and savage, traits only exasperated ever since her parents died in a car accident, Deceilia grew to harbor a deep hatred for authority figures; men and women of power and/or influence. They grew apart after college, but they did meet again as adults after Linda moved to Chicago. One day, Supergirl was called to the hospital to visit her dying friend, Dick. When her experiment failed, she tossed the X-Kryptonite (as it became known) out the window. Accidentally her pet Streaky came across the X-Kryptonite, and was exposed to its radiation.

Streaky was depowered during the events of ''Kryptonite Nevermore'' (since the Kryptonite nugget was turned into iron) and became a normal cat again. A while later, when Linda moved to San Francisco, she left it with her adoptive parents.

Several years later, Linda was a grad student living in Chicago and studing Criminal Psychology. One day she found a female stray cat which she adopted and named "Streaky" because it reminded her of "another cat she used to own".

Pre-Crisis Zor-El and Allura In-Ze (her name is sometimes spelled ''Alura'') met in Argo City and married several years after Krypton's destruction. After a short while they gave birth their only birth, Kara. Fifteen years later, when Argonians were dying because of Kryptonite poisoning, Zor-El built a space vessel that would rocket Kara away from Argo City and programmed it with a course heading for Earth in where Superman lived. Kara believed her parents were killed along with the destruction of Argo City. However, it was later revealed that In Argo City's final moments, Zor-El discovered a limbo dimension which existed parallel to the Phantom Zone. Dubbing it the Survival Zone, he created a projection device which transported dozens of Kryptonians to safety, although they were now trapped, with no means to return to the normal universe. Kara managed to free them, helped by her foster father, and Zor-El and Alura relocated to the city Kandor on the planet, Rokyn.

Post-Crisis Zor-El and Alura were members of the Science Guild stationed in an offworld colony (Zor-El was a member of the Art Guild before marrying Alura). Zor-El was more emotional and warm in contrast to cold and rational Alura. Zor-El designed and built the dome that saved Argo City from Krypton's destruction, and tried -uselessly- to convince the City Council to find a new planet to settle on before the energy dome failed. At the same time he built a space rocket, only in case. When Brainiac attacked Argo City, he and Alura sent Kara to Earth, asking her to look after her baby cousin. Captured by Brainiac, they were added to his bottled city of Kandor, and eventually freed by Superman. While Zor-El is a certified NiceGuy, Alura is a KnightTemplar kept in check only by her husband.

Post-Flashpoint Zor-El was a scientist. Alura a soldier and part of Argo City guard. Although Zor-El had a falling out with his little brother, he paid heed to Jor-El's warnings and built a protective dome around Argo City, at the same time building a space pod to send his daughter to Earth before Krypton's destruction in case the city dome failed. He neglected to tell Alura his plans, though, which caused a rift between them.
