* AwesomenessByAnalysis: One of his best skills is his analytical genius: he is very good at noticing minor details that can lead him to unravel enemy plots or rooting out conspiracies.

* {{Badass}}: ''The Clone Wars'' and ''Tarkin'' establish him as a very capable warrior and survivalist. He spent years learning survival skills under his granduncle Jova in the Carrion Plateau and fought on the frontlines (both in space and on the ground) during the Clone Wars.

* TheStrategist: He is one of the Empire's top military strategists and commanders, which is why he is given command over the Death Star.

* AntiVillain: Type II and Type II. Darth Vader essentially became one by ''Return of the Jedi''. For one thing, it is hinted that his attempts to turn Luke to the Dark Side were as a means of protecting him (the only alternative was to kill him), and when mentioning that it's too late for him to redeem himself, he seems to say it with a tinge of remorse. This, combined with the fact that he even breaks his general rule of YouHaveFailedMe, show that the dark side has begun to lose its' grip on him.

* AllThereInTheScript: In the closing credits of "Point of No Return" it's revealed that he's been promoted to the rank of Admiral since his last appearance in ''The Clone Wars''.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Presented as such in ''The Clone Wars''. As anyone familiar with [[Film/ANewHope the movies]] knows, he simply hasn't gotten the chance to be unambiguous.
* CoDragons: Him and Vader are the top officers serving the Emperor in ''A New Hope''. Although Tarkin orders Vader around a couple of times, he also lets him take the initiative more often than not. His authority is probably based on the fact that he is in charge of the Death Star, and that's where Vader happens to be; in most respects they are equals.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: After being rescued from The Citadel, he isn't very grateful to Anakin and his team, which annoys them.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: His reasoning behind the Death Star is to frighten the citizens into servitude. Tarkin didn't seem to think that would result in people [[ZeroPercentApprovalRating joining the Rebel cause because they don't like having their planets blown up]].
* EvilOldFolks: During the Galactic Civil War, he was one of the oldest Imperials, and is considered to be one of the most monstrous by many due to ordering the destruction of Alderaan.
* FaceFramedInShadow: During the Citadel story arc his face had a tendency to have rather sinister lighting.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He acts very polite towards Leia, then casually orders her planet blown up in front of her.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: He and Anakin get along in the Citadel trilogy of ''The Clone Wars'', foreshadowing their later working relationship in ''Film/ANewHope''.
* {{Hypocrite}}: His going back on his ultimatum and has Alderaan blown up anyway is all the more vile when he acts shocked and enraged that Leia lied about where the rebels were stationed.
* IcyBlueEyes: His eyes have a cold blue shade that match his unpleasant personality.
* InspectorJavert: Subverted in his prosecution of Ahsoka for the Jedi Temple bombing: he did everything in his power to make sure Ahsoka is convicted of her supposed crimes, despite some obvious and suspicious coincidences pointing to a {{Frameup}}. According to WordOfGod, this was because he didn't actually care about who was the perpetrator, he only wanted to convict a Jedi to strengthen his position and weaken the Order's.
* {{Jerkass}}: In his appearance in the ''Clone Wars'' series, he had to be saved by Anakin from the Separatists. However, instead of being gracious enough to express gratitude to Anakin, he is a complete jerk about it, causing Anakin to tell him that he'll only respect those who know gratitude. However, the two do start to get along, and Anakin [[JerkassHasAPoint acknowledges that Tarkin has several good points]].
* KarmicDeath: He is killed on the very station he hoped to use to instill fear in the galaxy, giving it a new hope instead.
* KickTheDog: He orders the destruction of Alderaan even after Leia tells him what he wants to hear (though she was lying), simply because he believes the planet would serve as an effective demonstration.
* KnightTemplar: Why no, he doesn't see anything amoral about blowing up a pacifist planet - it's only to protect order.
* LackOfEmpathy: He threatens to destroy Alderaan to make Princess Leia spill the beans on where the Rebels are hiding, then blows up Alderaan anyway to set an example for the rest of the galaxy.
* MachiavelliWasWrong: He was certain that fear of the Death Star would keep the thousands of opressed star systems in line, and he blew up Alderaan as a demonstration and warning. It backfired, because the general outrage over destroying the peaceful planet increased the support of the Rebellion.
* TheMeanBrit: He isn't ''British'', [[AliensOfLondon per se]], but he's certainly mean.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: The destruction of Alderaan at his command was meant to be a demonstration of the Empire's power, and that resistance would be crushed effectively instantaneously. Instead, it ''[[EpicFail tremendously increased]]'' support for the Rebellion.
* NoMacGuffinNoWinner: When it became obvious, that he can't stop Tarkin from escaping, Osi Sobeck, warden of the Citadel attempted to kill him, in order to stop the Nexus Route coordinates he had memorized from getting back to the Republic.
* NonActionBigBad: All he does in ''Film/ANewHope'' is command the destruction of a planet; he does not carry it out himself.
* NotSoDifferent: His actions in war are similar to Anakin's, who realized this midway through the Citadel trilogy.
* SadisticChoice: Forces on Leia, between betraying the Rebellion or Leia's home planet. Leia betrays the Rebellion. Appears to, anyway; it later turns out that she gave him false information in order to stall for time. Tarkin blows up her planet anyway.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Sort of. His constant complaining to his superior officer's face puts him into this trope. It's also hinted that he got his position from his connection with Palpatine, as well.
* SmugSnake: Even when the Rebels have crucial information on how to blow up the Death Star, he deliberately does nothing to order for the protection of the vulnerable area, nor does he have a contingency plan should anything go wrong.
* TemptingFate: He is incredulous when one of his subordinates suggest evacuating during the Rebel attack on the Death Star.
-->'''Tarkin:''' Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances!
* TheUnfettered: And he criticizes the Jedi for being TheFettered in a time of war. He takes this viewpoint further in his service to the Empire, blowing up a planet just to set an example.
* UngratefulBastard: Ahsoka saves his life back when he is first introduced in ''The Clone Wars'' Season 3. One would think this would earn her at least a little consideration. One would be wrong. Though not without good reason, he cuts her no slack when it appears as if she murdered a suspect, and extends this to suspicion of her attempting to silence potential witnesses. He is outright gleeful when he asks the Court to sentence Ahsoka to death.
* VillainousCheekbones[=/=]VillainousWidowsPeak: Played with during ''The Clone Wars'' in that he's working for the good guys, but is still a ruthless {{Jerkass}}. They fully suit him under the Empire's rule.

* AndIMustScream: He sees his time hospitalized and having his flesh eaten away as this. He threatens to do the same to Kanan and Hera, and for even longer for experimentation purposes.

'''Kanan Jarrus:''' After a few drinks.\\
'''Count Vidian:''' The mind is a dynamo in the dark, an engine endlessly running, powering nothing. It thrashes in the night, seeking daylight, inventing its own. ''Controlling nothing.'' Consider that! The youngling and the aged experience it - the struggle with ineffectuallity. Controlling nothing is the true death.
* ArtificialLimbs: All four of his limbs are artificial, and he essentially has super strength that allows him to beat beings much stronger than a human to death and jump great distances.
* AttackReflector: His entire body can deflect blaster shots thanks to a cortosis graft. [[spoiler:[[EyeScream Zaluna learned this the hard way.]]]]
* AxCrazy: He may claim not to enjoy beating people to death, but he sure seems to do it an awful lot in the name of "efficiency".
* BadassTransplant: His cybernetics make him incredibly deadly in a fistfight.
* BodyHorror: According to his backstory, he lost the majority of his body to a flesh-eating disease [[spoiler:that came as a result of [[NoOSHACompliance too much exposure to toxins and other chemical agents in the industries he explored]]]].
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Forget the old way".
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: His ideas for increasing work efficiency includes [[BadBoss killing "inefficient" workers]] and [[NoOSHACompliance neglecting worker safety]]. [[spoiler:Ironically, he used to be a safety inspector for the Mining Guild - and not a military whistleblower as claimed by his official biography - when he was Lemuel Tharsa, and it was because other [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Corrupt Corporate Executives]] that he decided to stop playing by the rules.]]
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Several characters note that there is nothing human about Vidian anymore. As described from Kanan's perspective, he looks like "a war droid playing a human at a masquerade party."
* {{Cyborg}}: He contracted a disease that robbed him of his limbs and ate away his flesh, which resulted in him getting cybernetic limbs. He also lost his eyes, and had them replaced with cybernetic ones that he can use to playback anything he saw that day. His voicebox is also in his throat, so his lips do not move when he speaks. He specifically selected the baritone of the voice based on research regarding the most authoritative and inspiring voice tone. [[spoiler:Near the end of the story, it's revealed that even the face under his synth-skin his robotic. And there are several that aides that he made like himself as well.]]
* FacialHorror: [[spoiler:During the final battle aboard the ''Forager'', he gets rid of his synth-skin face to reveal a metallic face underneath.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: A seemingly charismatic businessmen who's actually a temperamental sociopath underneath.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:It's because of other [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Corrupt Corporate Executives]], [[AndIMustScream spending two years bedridden due to a flesh-eating disease and feeling "useless" at that time]] that he strives for efficiency at all costs.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: He gets set off very easily, and ends up killing at least one person simply for being there when he got annoying news. Commander Chamas notes that his stateroom was completely trashed.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:He gets by killed by Skelly, the same guy whom he got the idea to destroy Cynda from and gave several fatal internal injuries to.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: If he ever had it before, he lost it along with most of his body. He's willing to murder for efficiency. At the beginning of ''A New Dawn'', [[EstablishingCharacterMoment he orders the destruction of a damaged freighter just because it would be faster to replace than to repair it]].
* MadeOfIron: Thanks to his excessive cybernetics, he is difficult to kill, to the point that he survived a mine collapse on Cynda. He also has cortosis grafts in his skin that can conduct the energy dissipated from blaster bolts. [[spoiler:He dies for real when Skelly blows up the ''Expedient'' with both of them onboard.]]
* NoOSHACompliance: It's more accurate to say if an industry has ''any'' safety regulations, chances are that Vidian will remove some of them for his idea of efficiency if he takes control of it. [[spoiler:Ironically, he used to be a safety inspector himself.]]
* SmugSuper: He's very overconfident and thinks he can gain the loyalty of anyone serving under him, such as promising Captain Sloane a position as the youngest Admiral in the Imperial Navy when he really finds the idea laughable. [[spoiler:He also tries to sabotage his rival, Lero Danthe, by falsifying a report on the half-life of exposed thorilide. It comes as a shock to him when Sloane tries to have him arrested.]] That said, he's still dangerous in a fight and it still takes a lot to kill him. [[spoiler:Even when Sloane orders his arrest, he just [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomps]] the stormtroopers carrying out the order. The only two times he's been successfully put down was when Skelly drugged him and later, blew him up (and [[KilledOffForReal killed him for real]]) on the ''Expedient''.]]
* SocialDarwinist: He sees any worker who isn't at their potential or "ordinary" as useless, and will see fit to dispose of them. For example, he tried to kill Okadiah just because he was too old for physical labor. Kanan counters his idea by pointing that his knowledge is what still makes him useful.
* TheSociopath: He's in charge of part of the Empire's production and business division, but he has very little to no regard for the lives of workers for the sake of "efficiency". As a lot of characters note, there's barely anything human about him anymore, and not just because of the excessive cybernetics.
* ThatManIsDead: Subverted. [[spoiler:After he became Count Vidian, he treated Lemuel Tharsa as a separate entity and used the name to validate his own plans.]]
* UncannyValley[=/=]UncannyValleyMakeup: Invoked. The only part of him that looks human is a synth-skin face [[spoiler:(and underneath that is a metallic skull)]], and it barely even moves. He doesn't even move his lips to talk (that's done with a vocalizer on his neck). As Kanan describes him, he looks like a droid trying to dress like a human instead of a cyborg.
* VillainousBreakdown: He loses cool almost any time Baron Danthe reports demands for unrealistic production increases. [[spoiler:He has another when Captain Sloane tries to have him arrested for treason against the Emperor.]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He has one during his brawl with Kanan and Hera in his operating room on Calcoraan. His torso is artificial as well.

-->''"Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station."''

An ambitious military officer who rose through the Republic Army's ranks during the Clone Wars. As governor of the Outer Rim Territories for the Galactic Empire, he was put in charge of the construction of the Death Star, which he saw as a way to keep the galaxy's star systems in check.
----
* AllThereInTheScript: In the closing credits of "Point of No Return" it's revealed that he's been promoted to the rank of Admiral since his last appearance in ''The Clone Wars''.

** Vader's tendency to do this is lampshaded in ''TheForceUnleashed'' where there is an achievement for killing a certain number of your own men while playing as Vader in the prologue. Bonus points for it being an ActorAllusion as well (Matt Sloane, the voice of Vader in that game, also voiced Chad Vader, with the achievement being a direct reference to that series).

Amedda also assists Palpatine in overthrowing the Republic and establishing the Empire.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: He immediately proclaims that Yoda can't be dead when the clone troopers report their [[NeverFoundTheBody failure to find Yoda's body]] after his fight with Palpatine in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
* TheDragon: Serves as this for Darth Sidious in the political arena.
* HornedHumanoid: Has four long horns, two of which are draped over his shoulders.
* NumberTwo: He's the Vice Chair and Speaker of the Senate for both Valorum and Chancellor Palpatine. After becoming Grand Vizier of the Empire, he meets with government officials in Palpatines stead whenever the Emperor is not available.
* OverlyLongTongue: A deleted scene in ''Attack of the Clones'' reveals him to have a long forked tongue.
* RubberForeheadAlien: He's a Chagrian with blue skin and long horns.
* SecretKeeper: According to WordOfGod, he is aware that Chancellor Palpatine is secretly Darth Sidious.

The Dark Lord of the Sith and the ultimate evil of the galaxy. Leading a double life as the kindly Senator Palpatine from Naboo, Darth Sidious masterminds his rise to Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, the destruction of the Jedi Order, and the establishment of a new Sith Empire with himself as its tyrannical, fear-mongering ruler.
----
* {{Abusive Parent|s}}: He raised Darth Maul, if by "raised" you mean "tortured and conditioned the poor kid into a monster".
* AndThatLittleGirlWasMe: It's heavily implied in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' (and confirmed by WordOfGod) that Darth Sidious served under ([[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder and killed]]) the death-conquering Sith Lord Darth Plagueis, whose story he tells Anakin to sway him to his side. He never tells Anakin that he was the apprentice in question, though, or how Palpatine could possibly know this information.
* AndThereWasMuchRejoicing: The {{Updated Rerelease}}s of ''Return Of The Jedi'' shows several of the films' major planets celebrating his death.
* AllAccordingToPlan: Everything he does, he's planned for. He even tells this to Luke. The only time that something doesn't go to his plan is when Luke proves to be incorruptible, and shortly thereafter, when Vader saves his son.
* AllThereInTheManual[=/=]AllThereInTheScript: In ''The Empire Strikes Back'' and ''Return Of The Jedi'', the Emperor was only identified by his title (or in the case of Darth Vader in private, "Master"). The name "Palpatine" was only given in the Visual Dictionary for the Original Trilogy and the ''Return Of The Jedi'' {{Novelization}}. It wasn't until the prequel trilogy that he was identified by name on-screen.
* TheAntiChrist[=/=]{{Satan}}: Heavily implied to be this; not only is he immensely powerful, but he also manages to exterminate the Jedi and set himself up as ruler of the galaxy through years of plotting and manipulations. Creator/GeorgeLucas even [[WordOfGod outright says]] Palpatine is the saga's equivalent of the devil.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: The guy managed to follow the Rule of Two with three of his apprentices. Most Sith Lords only get to follow one. Being Emperor warrants having the strength to back it up.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: Darth Sidious, which is based off the word insidious, which can appropriately mean "causing harm in a way that is gradual or not easily noticed".
* {{Badass}}: He's a cunning and powerful Sith Lord who managed to fool everyone into thinking he was a benevolent old man for years. When he finally lets loose, he cuts down three of the most powerful Jedi Masters in the Order in mere seconds. Then, a little later, he engages Yoda in combat, only for the engagement to end up in a draw.
** When facing Darth Maul and Savage Opress, he beats both of them easily.
* BadassBoast: "If you will not be turned, ''you will be '''destroyed'''''!" Cue the Force Lightning to back said claim up.
* BadassBookworm: Palpatine is a very intelligent man, oftentimes getting through conflict simply by manipulating others rather than taking action himself. But when he ''does'' take action, things aren't pretty. He's also extremely well versed in the lore of the Dark Side.
* BadassBystander: Was content to observe Darth Maul from afar during the Clone Wars, at least until Maul became a threat to his plans. Then [[{{Pun}} Sith]] really hit the fan...
* BadassGrandpa: He is in his sixties by ''Revenge of the Sith'', but easily curbstomps three far younger Jedi Masters. By the time of ''Return Of The Jedi'', he's 86 years old and still ridiculously powerful.
* BadassInCharge: During the Clone Wars and after, he had ''both sides'' reporting to him, one way or another. When he became the first Galactic Emperor, he only became more powerful and dangerous.
* BadassLongRobe: Is decked out in full Sith Master garb when he goes to fight Darth Maul and Savage Opress, and after his identity as Sidious is exposed to the Jedi.
* BadBoss: Vader says in ''Return Of The Jedi'' that the Emperor is "not as forgiving as I am", which - given Vader's track record for [[YouHaveFailedMe killing officers who disappoint him]] - helps puts in perspective just how horrible his master really is.
* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: His takedown of Maul and Opress, while for his own reasons, helped Obi-Wan escape Mandalore.
* BadPowersBadPeople: Palpatine is a very powerful Sith Lord with very strong powers, but he uses his powers to commit evil deeds.
* BastardUnderstudy: Like many a Sith master/apprentice relationship before him, he was this to Darth Plagueis, whom he killed in his sleep after being taught everything his master knew. He also takes steps to [[DefiedTrope defy]] this trope with his own apprentices in the prequels, choosing those who were unquestionably loyal to him.
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: Gets into one with Yoda in the finale of ''The Clone Wars'' season 6, trying to tempt him to the dark side. It should go without saying that he fails.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: As the respected politician Chancellor Palpatine, he's a noble-looking, distinguished older man. As the Emperor, he's horribly disfigured with deep wrinkles, pallid skin and [[SupernaturalGoldEyes yellow eyes]].
* BigBad: The definitive one for the movie saga; every major conflict in the films, from the [[Film/ThePhantomMenace invasion of Naboo]] to the [[Film/AttackOfTheClones Clone Wars]], from the [[Film/RevengeOfTheSith Jedi's destruction and Anakin's fall]] to [[Film/ANewHope the Empire itself]], is the result of his meticulous planning.
* BiggerBad: Several episodes of ''The Clone Wars'' deal with events and villains who operate outside of his plans. Most notable is the Nightsisters and Brothers arc. Aside from [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom accidentally setting off the crisis]] of Maul's return, he remains completely uninvolved in the events right up until Maul becomes an actual threat to his plans.
** In ''A New Hope'', where he's only mentioned in passing, though he outranks Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin and is responsible for the paths they took.
* BigGood: He posed as this for the Republic during the Clone Wars, while he was also secretly leading the Separatists.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: The soft-spoken, polite, and noble Chancellor Palpatine was simply a role for Palpatine to hide behind - the truth is that he's a ManipulativeBastard.
* BlackCloak: His staple costume as Emperor, which he wore whenever he appeared as Darth Sidious in the prequels.
* CardCarryingVillain: A surprisingly well handled example. He makes no pretensions about himself or his motives and openly champions the power of TheDarkSide of TheForce, but he's just so cunning, egotistical, and pragmatic that it makes him a very three-dimensional villain in spite of this.
* TheChessmaster: The way he became Emperor. He used everybody in the galaxy as his pawns, manipulated into tearing the galaxy and foundations of the Republic apart until he could take over completely, wipe out the Jedi, and have an unquestioningly loyal army at his command.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Has betrayed everyone who placed trust in him.
* ClaspYourHandsIfYouDeceive: Tends to do this in ''The Clone Wars''.
* ClassicVillain: Palpatine represents Ambition, {{Wrath}} and {{Pride}}. It helps that he's also a completely unsympathetic individual.
* ConMan: Palpatine, in many ways, is one. He cons everyone (Anakin, Padmé, the Republic, the Senate, the Trade Federation, the Rebel Alliance, and Jar Jar) in order to get what he wants: revenge on the Jedi and control of the galaxy. When he tries to con Luke, however, it all falls apart.
* TheCorrupter: He serves as this Anakin in the prequels, earning his trust and leading him astray in order to turn him into Darth Vader. Also tries to be this to Luke in ''Return Of The Jedi''; and it might have worked had Luke not had [[IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim the right realization at the right moment]].
* CorruptPolitician: Senator Palpatine got elected to the office of Supreme Chancellor legally. All the power he gathered afterwards was gathered not so legally..
* CrazyPrepared: In ''Revenge Of The Sith'', it's revealed that he had a '''second''' lightsaber after he lost the first to Mace Windu. However, ''The Clone Wars'' reveals that he had a penchant for DualWielding, making this a bit more plausible.
* CrossCastRole: In the original cut of ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'', the Emperor was portrayed by Elaine Baker, wife of makeup artist Rick Baker, with chimpanzee eyes superimposed over her own, and her voice [[SameLanguageDub dubbed over]] by Clive Revill.
* CruelMercy: He tortures Darth Maul with Force Lightning, but refuses to kill him due to having "uses" for him. Of course, he claims that for a Sith, there ''is'' no mercy.
* CulturedBadass: The most powerful Sith Lord of all times, the mastermind behind the Clone Wars, and hides his true face so well, that he fooled the Jedi Council for over a decade. Also a huge admirer of arts.
* CurbStompBattle: Delivers a serious one to Savage and Maul.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: He knew better than to think that Dooku would remain unflinchingly loyal forever, and ordered him to kill Ventress as both a sign of his loyalty and to eliminate one of Dooku's most valuable assets.
* DarkIsEvil: The black cloak, gravelly voice, yellow eyes, and wrinkled and scarred skin is enough to tip anyone off that Palpatine is not a good guy.
* DefeatEqualsExplosion: He goes out in a brilliant eruption of dark side energy after being thrown down a reactor shaft.
* DidntSeeThatComing: He thought it impossible that the natives of Endor (human child-sized primitives) [[RockBeatsLaser might be able to take advantage of their native terrain against the Empire's finest troops]] (though said natives did have help from a Jedi, a droid who could hack anything, and several crack shots). He also apparently never considered that a guy who [[LoveMakesYouEvil turned to the dark side to save his wife]] might [[LoveRedeems turn from it to save his son]].
* DisneyVillainDeath: Darth Vader throws him down the shaft of the Death Star II in ''Return Of The Jedi''. We also see him ''[[DefeatEqualsExplosion explode]]'' before he hits the bottom.
* TheDreaded: To Dooku and Darth Maul, both of whom, it should be said, [[BadBoss have been his apprentice]].
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: When he realizes that he has won when Anakin cuts off Mace's hand, he begins cackling evilly and screams out "Unlimited Power!" as he fries Mace with Force lightning.
* DualWielding: Shows it off in "The Lawless", against Darth Maul and Savage Oppress no less.
* ElectricTorture: He ''loves'' using Force Lightning to torture people. Just ask Mace, Maul, and Luke.
* {{Expy}}: Though Palpatine was initially conceived as the ''Star Wars'' counterpart to [[Franchise/FlashGordon Emperor Ming the Merciless]] (fitting, considering that ''Flash Gordon'' was a major influence in the making of the Original Trilogy), he is also based on quite a few historical figures. George Lucas originally stated that he was based on UsefulNotes/RichardNixon, but traits of UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler also made their way into the character, and these were only exemplified by the events of the Prequel Trilogy. In regards to the Prequel Trilogy specifically, his personality as a Senator/Chancellor seem to mirror the personality of UsefulNotes/JuliusCaesar and UsefulNotes/WinstonChurchill, while his complex ThirtyGambitPileup as Darth Sidious is reminiscent of UsefulNotes/NapoleonBonaparte.
* TheEmperor: After ascending to power, he is more often referred to as "the Emperor" in-universe than "Emperor Palpatine".
* [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Everyone Calls Him The Emperor]]: In the original trilogy, anyway.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: If he could, he wouldn't have been so enthusiastic in torturing a young man with lightning ''[[PapaWolf right next to his father]]''.
** Emperor Palpatine's arrogance and relentless self-centeredness blind him to the idea that Luke would show mercy and redeem his father instead of co-ruling the Galaxy — with someone he is destined to overthrow in due time, no less — causing his carefully-laid plans to fail. The idea that Darth Vader would turn on him rather than watch his son be murdered presumably never entered his mind either.
** This is foreshadowed earlier, when Vader senses Luke aboard a captured Imperial shuttle headed for Endor. Palpatine comments that he cannot sense anything - presumably because he's turned so completely to the Dark Side that he simply doesn't recognize the rest of the Force. It also explains why he wasn't more careful about provoking Vader's Heel-Face Turn: he could only sense the evil side of him.
* EvilChancellor: It takes a bit of digging since he's been around for so long, but he starts as this and is the poster boy.
* EvilCounterpart: To [[GoodCounterpart Yoda]] - particularly noticeable in ''Revenge Of The Sith'', where their ideologies are brought into question when they fight.
* EvilerThanThou: As Maul learned the hard way, there's no room for a third party in the Clone Wars.
* EvilFeelsGood: Part of being full on evil and the major dominance of TheDarkSide.
* EvilGloating: Boy, does he love to do this as Darth Sidious/The Emperor. Some memorable examples:
** "[[TheChessmaster "Everything that has transpired has done so according to]] ''[[TheChessmaster my]]'' [[TheChessmaster design!"]]
** "And now, young Skywalker... you will die."
* EvilIsHammy: As any EvilOverlord DrunkOnTheDarkSide needs to be. Particularly noticable in ''Revenge Of The Sith''.
* EvilLaugh: Whenever something goes ''exactly'' the way he wants it to before his eyes, he will let out a laugh of the Type II or Type IV sort.
* EvilMakeover: After being exposed as Sidious and having Force lightning reflected back into his face, Palpatine's face becomes hideously scarred and wrinkled, reflecting his true nature.
* EvilMakesYouMonstrous: Palpatine became disfigured into a withered ghoul of a man.
* EvilMentor: To Anakin/Darth Vader. "I can teach you things you need to know in order to save Padme. Oh, and you'll have to kill a bunch of kids for me too, but never mind that now..."
* EvilOldFolks: He's in his sixties during the prequel and in his eighties during the sequels, and is the most diabolical sociopath the Galaxy has seen in a long time. According to WordOfGod, he has absolutely no redeeming qualities.
* EvilOverlooker: In many Star Wars posters, along with Vader.
* EvilOverlord: Also, a poster boy for this one. Emperor Palpatine (as opposed to his alter ego Senator/Chancellor Palpatine, a VillainWithGoodPublicity). A Dark Lord of the Sith who doubles as ruler of a galactic empire, and well versed in manipulating TheDarkSide.
* EvilPlan: GalacticConqueror variety. He has succeeded by Episode IV.
** A secondary plan is his continuing search for a better apprentice.
** TakeOverTheWorld: Senator Palpatine, AKA Darth Sidious, didn't just take over a world, he took over the ''galaxy''.
* EvilSorcerer: As shown in "Sacrifice", he's able to use the Master-apprentice link between Yoda and Dooku to attack Yoda's psyche, by way of an ancient ritual that required a single drop of Dooku's [[BloodMagic blood]].
* EvilSoundsDeep: After he's disfigured during his duel with Mace Windu in ''RevengeOfTheSith'', his voice becomes raspier and much deeper.
* EvilSoundsRaspy: In the prequel trilogy, he speaks with a normal voice while under the guise of Chancellor Palpatine, but uses the rasp when he's acting as Darth Sidious. After the fight with Mace Windu leaves him with his distinctly disfigured face, he speaks with a raspy voice at all times—so it becomes the iconic voice of Emperor Palpatine in the original trilogy.
* EvilWearsBlack: ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin.
* EyesOfGold: Possesses them from ''Revenge Of The Sith'' up to ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* FauxAffablyEvil: In the waning days of the Republic, he has a tendency to be charming and friendly in spite of his intentions to screw everyone over. As the Emperor, he doesn't particularly bother to hide the fact that he's a bastard, but occasionally gives off a mockingly concerned tone of voice.
--> Oh, I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive.
* GalacticConqueror: Palpatine is the consummate example of this trope, though he did it through pure cunning rather than outright force. He got voted into absolute power, after masterminding a civil war after a millennium of peace (in which he was secretly the leader of both sides), resulting in him receiving popular support for his authoritarian reforms. By the time he declared himself Emperor, he already had absolute control of the Republic...or, as he declared it, '''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis the first! Galactic! EMPIRE!]]'''
* GenocideBackfire: He attempted to exterminate everyone in the Jedi Order, and thus made further oppressive laws against force users to prevent the return of the Jedi. It backfired, as the Jedi ended up returning.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Palpatine has glowing yellow eyes, as do many of the other Sith Lords.
* GoodColorsEvilColors: Palpatine wears all black, indicating his evil nature.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Of the evil type. Palpatine's face became filled with scars after he got a face full of lightning.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Palpatine spends the entire series manipulating people's emotions, both with his charisma and the Force. When Luke Skywalker nearly kills Darth Vader, however, he loses control of his ''own'' emotions and becomes excited at the prospect of having an even more powerful apprentice, outright telling the younger Skywalker to kill his father. Luke, however, realizes that he would be playing into Palpatine's hands by doing that, and he also believes that IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim. Luke then openly rejects Palpatine's WeCanRuleTogether proposal, telling him that his father is redeemable, which ''infuriates'' Palpatine into attacking the young Jedi. Darth Vader, witnessing his son's faith and willpower, and realizing how expendable he is in the eyes of his master, takes the opportunity to kill the bastard once and for all.
* {{Hypocrite}}: His MO in the prequel trilogy, as his rise to power involves him pretending to be one of the good guys, pretending to have concern for the people of Naboo (when he's actually arranging for their destruction), pretending to love democracy and the Republic and to reluctantly take on the emergency powers the Senate granted him (when he's really trying to set himself up as an autocrat), etc.
* IAmTheTrope: He believes himself to ''be'' the Empire, and the scary part is he's right.
* {{Immortality}}: ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' reveals this to be his ultimate goal.
* IncomingHam: While Palpatine is notorious for being one of the hammiest characters in the entire franchise, he remains relatively quiet and subdued in the Prequel Trilogy. Then Palpatine fights Mace Windu, loses, and misleads Anakin into coming to his rescue, leading to Windu losing his arm. At this point, Palpatine gives off a SlasherSmile and gets rid of any and all subtlelty by screaming "'''''[[AC:[[DrunkOnTheDarkSide POOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEER! UN-LIM-IT-ED, POOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!]]]]'''''" And from that point on, he continuously proves that EvilIsHammy with every single line that comes out of his mouth.
* InTheHood: Palpatine uses this straight whenever he is in his Sidious persona, and uses it permanently after becoming Emperor.
* IShallTauntYou: Palpatine, like many dark side characters, is often seen using intimidation, threats and taunting to weaken his opponents.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Other people are just a means to an end for him.
* {{Jerkass}}: An even bigger one than Vader, due to being the BigBad of the saga. And unlike Vader, who is a TragicMonster that has occasional PetTheDog moments, there is ''nothing'' sympathetic about Palpatine.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: The only time Palpatine comes across as being sympathetic is when he rescues Darth Vader... Which is subsequently undone by the fact that he views Vader as expendable if it means he can have a more powerful apprentice.
* JoinOrDie: Offers Luke to join TheDarkSide in ''Return Of The Jedi''. Luke refuses, so he attempts to kill him with [[ElectricTorture Force Lightning]]. [[PapaWolf Vader puts a stop to it though.]]
* JustToyingWithThem: When he fought Maul and Savage, he opened the fight by pinning them against the wall with the Force, which they were unable to escape, until he ''let go of them''. He didn't break out the lightsabers because he had to, he did it because he ''wanted'' to.
* KarmicDeath: At the end of ''Return Of The Jedi'', Vader kills Palpatine while Palpatine is trying to kill [[MessianicArchetype Luke]] with the use of Force Lightning. Also, Anakin's transition into Darth Vader is marked by Palpatine using Force Lightning to make Mace Windu fall to his death, while Vader's return to the light side/being Anakin is marked by Vader sending Palpatine to fall to his death. Even better: Palpatine was using Force Lightning to kill Luke, and Vader's act stops him.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: In ''Revenge Of The Sith'', Palpatine orders Anakin to execute the disarmed Count Dooku after Anakin defeated him. After a moment of hesitation on Anakin's part, Palpatine commands him to do it — slipping into his Darth Sidious voice in the process — and Anakin beheads Dooku. This act serves the double purpose of removing a no longer useful pawn and bringing Anakin ever closer to the Sith way of thinking.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: Subverted with his CurbStompBattle against Darth Maul. While Maul did indeed do his share of [[KickTheDog incredibly]] [[WouldHurtAChild nasty]] [[RevengeByProxy things]] (including, not long ago, his murder of Satine to torment Obi-Wan), Sidious murdering Maul's more sympathetic brother, Savage Opress, in front of him while he's helpless to anything before torturing him to the point of begging for mercy and then imprisoning him on Stygeon is enough to invoke some sympathy for the otherwise [[TheSociopath sociopathic]] Maul.
* KlingonPromotion: He became top Sith when he murdered his master, Darth Plagueis.
* KnightOfCerebus: Just when you thought Darth Vader was the scariest villain in the galaxy, Palpatine turned up.
* KnightTemplar: The only motivation Palpatine has besides a sociopathic lust for power and control is that he genuinely believes that a Sith-run government is in the Galaxy's best interest...[[ConsummateLiar or so he claims, anyway.]]
* LetNoCrisisGoToWaste: In the prequel trilogy, Senator Palpatine uses fear of the Separatist movement (which he secretly influenced) to gain authority.
* LightningBruiser: During his duel with Maul and Savage, he not only outclasses them in terms of swordplay, but proves to be much faster than either of them, as well as matching them in feats of strength, and doesn't show any signs of tiring.
* TheManBehindTheMan: Dooku's posing as the main villain, but in reality, he's merely TheDragon to Sidious.
* ManipulativeBastard: Palpatine is the puppet master behind the curtain, pulling the strings of all the characters in the movie. His manipulativeness is evident throughout the saga. From co-ordinating, and eventually betraying the Trade Federation, as they attack Naboo as an excuse to replace the incompetent Chancellor Valorum as Chancellor. Setting up the various commerce guilds in the Galaxy to take on the Republic as an excuse to access emergency powers. Getting Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader to kill Count Dooku to replace him as his apprentice, and then promising to save his wife from [[SelfFulfillingProphecy certain death]] with his [[DealWithTheDevil knowledge of the dark side]] so he would [[FaceHeelTurn turn his back]] [[FallenHero on the Jedi.]] And this is just to name a few of the manipulative things he's done.
** If he were just TheChessmaster, Sidious wouldn't have gotten Anakin on his side and might have failed outright. His ability to turn the emotionally vulnerable Jedi into a desperate pawn saved his life at least once.
** Sith-ness notwithstanding, he managed to shape the entire galaxy in his image, had manipulated every major event for the past two decades or so, and had kept everyone assured of his respectability and trustworthiness while doing so. As he declared himself ruler-for-life (and was applauded by the Senate for doing so) he could justifiably claim to have earned it. And his start to political prominence was over a seemingly minor trade dispute. Which he started. It helps [[AmbitionIsEvil he's motivated by pure ambition.]]
** While he does get defeated [[EvilCannotComprehendGood due to not realizing Vader cares for his son more than his duty]], he still manages to have absolute authority for twenty-five years. Not just that, but he's the first Sith Lord in their five thousand-year history to accomplish what they'd all been yearning to do.
** The novelization takes it UpToEleven. He caused Anakin Skywalker, TheChosenOne, on whom all of the universe's hopes rode, to turn completely and fully to TheDarkSide... by ''talking to him''. It's ''chilling'' to reach those scenes and then realize how he's spent the entire book setting up Anakin's psyche so that he can give it the last push when he needs to.
* MasterOfIllusion: By using an ancient BloodMagic-ritual, he was able to appear on Moraband(/Korriban) in front of Yoda, disguised as Sifo-Dyas, then draw Yoda into an illusionary battle, in which he tried to break the Grand Master's resolve, by offering him a chace to kill him, at the cost of sacrificing Anakin. He's also able to perfectly conceal his true nature in front of the entire Jedi Order.
* MasterSwordsman: Kills three of the most powerful Jedi Masters in the Order in mere seconds, and later defeats Yoda in a lightsaber / Force duel.
* MeaningfulName: Darth Sidious is rather in'sidious.' All the Darths have meaningful names. His non-Sith name, Palpatine, also qualifies, as WordOfGod stated that Palpatine was derived from "Palpitare", which is Latin for "to throb" (in fear, in this case). It also sounds like Palatine, the hill on which Rome was founded and the seat of imperial power.
* MindOverMatter: He has no trouble tossing around the platforms in the Senate chamber, and can even toss around Maul and Savage (both of whom have strong telekinetic abilities themselves) like they were dolls. Speaks to the great power he can wield.
* ModestRoyalty: As Emperor, he wears a rather simple black cloack, compared to the elaborate robes he used as a Chancellor.
* TheMole: If only the Jedi had realized that the Dark Lord of the Sith - their sworn enemy - was hiding amongst the politicians they were working for...
* MoleInCharge: After he becomes the leader of the Republic.
* MonsterProtectionRacket: His overarching plan in the prequel films is this trope on a galactic scale, and by the time he's found out, it's too late to stop him.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Though the Force provides a justification for this, as it enhances one's physical strength. He fought on-par with Savage Opress, who has proven strong enough to overpower even Jedi Masters with his strikes. Savage has also shrugged off nearly every physical attack used on him, but Sidious kicked him ''once'' and made it hurt.
* MysteriousBacker: Portrays himself as one in the prequel trilogy.
* [[MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch My World Doth Protest Too Much]]: Hailing from the peaceful world of Naboo, he becomes a genocidal galactic tyrant and in the front running for the Galaxy's most evil person who ever lived award.
* NoNameGiven: Palpatine (originally just "The Emperor," making this a mild subversion) has never been given a first name and might not even have one.
* ANaziByAnyOtherName: Considering how the Galactic Empire has several parallels to NaziGermany, Palpatine is a stand-in for UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler, among others.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Torturing Luke is what prompts Vader to make a HeelFaceTurn and destroy him.
** When he gives the order to execute the Jedi, the first one he orders killed is Obi-Wan ([[DoomedByCanon who naturally survives]]), followed by several others. By the time the order comes through to kill Yoda, he has already [[ISenseADisturbanceInTheForce felt the deaths of his fellow Jedi through the Force]], and is prepared when the attack comes.
* NotSoOmniscientAfterAll: Palpatine's speech about how everything was transpiring according to his design rings a bit hollow when you realize he's talking to the guy he earlier admitted to not actually knowing would be there.
* NumberOfTheBeast: The famous Order 66 was undoubtedly inspired by this. It also sounds similar to Order ''90''66, the order to arrest all Japanese-Americans during WorldWarII.
* ObfuscatingDisability: He deliberately makes himself appear weak and frail to his enemies, even using a cane in spite of not needing one. But as ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' and ''Return Of The Jedi'' show, he's among the most skilled lightsaber duelists and dark Force wielders in the galaxy.
* ObviouslyEvil: Darth Sidious has a hideously withered face, yellow eyes, a scary voice, and black robes. His name also sounds like "insidious." Subverted with his Palpatine identity, who looked like a kind politician before getting a face full of lightning.
* OhCrap: He is only scared/surprised twice in the entire saga. The first time is when Yoda briefly overpowers him, knocking him backward and nearly killing him. The second time is when Darth Vader takes hold of him and tosses him into the depths of the Death Star.
* OldMaster: Even during the Prequel Trilogy, he was in his late fifties.
* OnlyOneName: Was only referred to as Palpatine, or Darth Sidious, until his first name was revealed in the 2014 novel ''[[Literature/StarWarsTarkin Tarkin]]''.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He's got an Empire to micromanage and plots to set in motion; he has [[TheDragon Darth Vader]] to do the in-person chasing after of Rebels. Only in the Original Trilogy though, he's very active in the Prequel Trilogy. In the sense of Lucas modeling TheEmpire after Rome, in the PT, he's Octavian/Augustus while in the OT, he's Tiberius with Vader as Sejenus and Tarkin as Pilate.
* PermanentElectedOfficial: As a result of the "emergency powers" he was given at the start of the Clone Wars, he can remain in office indefinitely. The Jedi and many members of the Senate are disturbed by this.
* PlayingBothSides: How he arranged for the Clone Wars to begin before he became Supreme Chancellor.
* PresidentEvil: It was his steeping stone into becoming [[EvilChancellor Chancellor]].
* PsychicStrangle: An especially creepy example from "The Lawless". Upon arriving to the civil war torn Mandalore, he chokes two Death Watch soldiers with a gesture. He doesn't keep it up, like most characters do, he just ''waves'' his fingers ''once''. Later, he pinned two others against the wall he was standing behind while choking them. He's also powerful enough to choke and lift Dooku on Serenno, while he himself is on Coruscant - a difference of ''several light-years''.
* PyrrhicVillainy: Almost everything goes his way in ''Revenge Of The Sith'' except for Darth Vader being burned alive and losing all of his limbs, which weakened his strength in the Force. Had Vader made it through the battle against Obi-Wan unscathed, it's doubtful that anything could have stopped Palpatine.
* ThePurge: His infamous Order 66 was this to the Jedi, reducing the size of a group comprising thousands of people to a few dozen in the span of a couple of hours across countless planets.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: When he was Chancellor, he listened to the Jedi, believed his allies, and was willing to do what had to be done to stop the droid armies. This was all a ploy to make people trust him and believe he was a good ruler long enough before he could make himself Emperor and get Anakin on his side.
* RuleOfTwo: He takes action against Maul and Savage in season 5 of ''The Clone Wars'' because there's only supposed to be one master/apprentice pair, and Maul lost the position of apprentice when he got himself chopped in half. Furthermore, by taking Savage as his own apprentice, and taking over Mandalore, Maul became a [[TheRival rival]] in Sidious's book. He even invokes it:
-->'''Darth Sidious:''' Remember the one and only reality of the Sith: There can only be ''two''. And you are no longer my apprentice. You have been replaced.
* RunningBothSides: ''After'' he became Supreme Chancellor before and during the Clone Wars.
* SatanicArchetype: Confirmed to represent this by WordOfGod. Palpatine could easily be compared to that of Lucifer or {{Satan}} himself.
* ScarsAreForever: His face after being disfigured by his own lightning, although it was stated by Ian [=McDiarmid=] and implied in the film itself that the "disfigurement" was in fact his true face being unveiled.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: "I ''am'' the Senate!"
* SelfFulfillingProphecy[=/=]PropheticFallacy: Palpatine ordered Dooku to execute Ventress because he was worried that Dooku might use her to turn against him. Until then, Dooku never considered the possibility, but once he got Savage as a replacement for Ventress, he immediately decided on turning against his Master once Savage was ready.
* ShootTheDangerousMinion: During ''The Clone Wars'', Palpatine grows wary by the speed of Asajj Ventress's progress, and ordered Dooku to kill her, before she grew strong enough to aid Dooku if the Count turned against him. Dooku complied, but Ventress survived his betrayal and made herself a powerful enemy to Dooku.
* SignatureMove: Loves to use Force lightning an awful lot.
* TheSociopath: Palpatine is cunning, ruthless, and manipulative - enabling him to be the perfect avatar of the Dark Side.
* TheStarscream: Implied with respect to Darth Plagueis; notice his smile when he tells about Plagueis being killed by his apprentice. Then again, he ''is'' a Sith, so backstabbing is par for the course to them.
* StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred:
** In ''The Clone Wars'', while fighting Yoda in an illusion of his creation, he tempted Yoda to let the unconscious Anakin fall to his death, so that the elderly Jedi could focus on and kill him, stopping the Sith's plans once and for all. Yoda however refused to drop Anakin, even as he was repeatedly blasted by Sidious's lightning.
** He also tempted Luke to give in to his hatred and try to kill him, in order to save the Rebel Alliance.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: While his eyes appear blue for the majority of the original trilogy, after he fries himself with his own Force Lightning they're revealed to be yellow due to his immersion in the Dark Side.
* ThanatosGambit: Subverted in Episode VI. Palpatine to Luke: "Strike me down with all of your hatred, and your journey toward the dark side will be complete." That one didn't turn out exactly as planned.
* ThisIsYourBrainOnEvil: Tries to kill a boy in front of his PapaWolf father? [[DisneyVillainDeath Oops]].
* TooDumbToLive[=/=]VillainBall: Not only did he try to kill Luke in front of his father, who had specifically made it known that he wanted to keep his son alive even though it would be easier to kill him, but he also effectively told Darth Vader that he was ultimately expendable. Even if Darth Vader hadn't made a HeelFaceTurn, it's not likely that Palpatine would have lived very long with his apprentice no longer having a reason to respect his master.
* TreacherousAdvisor: He was acting as a kindly uncle figure for Anakin, listening to what he had to say, encouraging his rebellious side, and heaping him with praises. His true motives were to turn him to his side and against the Jedi.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: In ''Revenge Of The Sith'' he openly seizes the power that he'd been consolidating up until then.
* UriahGambit: Does it to Maul ''and'' Dooku. It's also pretty clear that he had every intention of doing this to Vader.
** One of the major reasons Palpatine orchestrated the Clone Wars and manipulated it to continue for as long as it did was to reduce the Jedi's numbers.
* VillainousBreakdown: A subtle example. When he finally realizes Luke has IncorruptiblePurePureness and isn't going to turn to the Dark Side, he slowly drops his FauxAffablyEvil demeanour before assaulting Luke, spurting out insults at the Jedi - all without ''completely'' losing his composure, but visibly showing anger at not getting what he wanted.
* VillainsNeverLie: Why yes, Luke, Palpatine ''is'' unarmed... but he does have access to the Force, as Luke very painfully discovers.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: Alongside Vader for Luke. Palpatine wants Luke to join TheDarkSide and replace Vader at his side.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Chancellor Palpatine in the prequel trilogy, where even the protagonists consider him honorable and trustworthy for the first two movies, and are [[UnwittingPawn responsible for him rising to the position of chancellor in the first place.]]
* WeaponOfChoice: Red lightsaber in ''Revenge Of The Sith''. Relies on [[ShockAndAwe Force lightning]] afterwards.
* WeHaveReserves: See BadBoss above.
* WickedCultured: Ian [=McDiarmid=], his actor, considers this the closest thing he has to a redeeming (or at least non-evil) feature. Makes sense, since [=McDiarmid=] himself is a theater actor and director, a job which naturally implies being well-read.
* WouldHurtAChild: Sidious was perfectly fine with performing potentially lethal experiments on ''infants''.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Palpatine pulls this off in ''Revenge Of The Sith'' to make [[TheChosenOne Anakin]] side with him against [[UnwittingPawn Mace Windu]]. He's just a tired old man viciously attacked by the ruthless Jedi despite being willing to surrender. He's barely alive, so surely Anakin wouldn't allow a murder to occur? And not only has Anakin been spending a great deal of time alone with Palpatine and beginning to be swayed by his words, but he has good reason to resent the Jedi after they grant him only token representation on the Council and force him into becoming their spy, and sees Mace as an arrogant RabidCop who's subverting the laws of the Republic. (He doesn't actually want to kill Mace and his horror at Mace's death is palpable.) Palpatine is a rare example of this trope in that he's both a gazelle and a lion. One moment he's begging for mercy; the next, he's gleefully electrocuting Mace while screaming [[ChewingTheScenery "POWER!]] [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide UNLIMITED]] [[LargeHam POWER!"]]
* WrongGenreSavvy: He took his savvyness a bit too far when he ordered Dooku to eliminate Ventress on the grounds of her becoming too powerful to let remain her the Count's apprentice. Up to that point, Dooku had never shown any desire to betray Sidious, but once he had Savage as a replacement, he immediately stated his plans to overthrow him. [[ForegoneConclusion It all works out in Sidious's favor in the end]].
* XanatosGambit: The Clone Wars are designed so that no matter who wins, he ends up with control of the galaxy, though it's pretty clear that a Separatist victory would be Plan B. His various gambits around his apprentices most truly represent this trope, however - by pitting his current apprentice against the potential replacement, he wins no matter the outcome. Dookú finds this out the hard way. Vader, on the other hand, takes exception to the idea.
** There are two Skywalkers, one's already his apprentice but he's more machine than man now and the other is young and idealistic and a potential threat. So he tries to tempt Luke to the DarkSide with a duel with his father. If Luke wins, he gets an upgraded apprentice, if not, he's rid of a potential threat and Darth Vader's loyalty no longer has another possible recipient. It didn't work however, as Luke wouldn't turn to the dark side. He then tries to kill Luke but that doesn't work either because Vader is still capable of throwing the emperor off a balcony.
** Sidious's plan in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' is a XanatosGambit — at the start of the film he wants the Trade Federation to hold Queen Amidala prisoner; when she escapes, he sends his apprentice, Darth Maul, to prevent her from reaching Coruscant. But Amidala does reach Coruscant, and within a couple hours she's helped Sidious become Chancellor Palpatine.
** The entire prequel trilogy of ''Star Wars'' was this by Sidious: he controlled both sides in the Clone Wars (the Republic as Chancellor Palpatine, the Separatists as Darth Sidious) so whichever side won, the Jedi would be destroyed, he would become Emperor, and he would have a powerful Sith apprentice (Count Dooku or Darth Vader: this was decided - possibly along with the outcome of the entire war - by their duel at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith). This was planned as well, with Palpatine convincing Dooku to defeat Kenobi while losing to Anakin, thereby allowing the two to convert Anakin to the dark side.
* XanatosSpeedChess: WordOfGod indicate that he was also very adaptable with his plans. For example, he hadn't intended for Padmé to arrive on Coruscant, but worked it into his plan instead, which turned out better than the original one.
** Palpatine is this trope so much that people now assume ''every single aspect of the series'' is his doing, and all went as planned ([[ItWasHisSled except dying]]). They forget that most of The Phantom Menace has him quickly changing his game plan, either because he overestimated the heroes or because X-factors kept popping up. He ends up getting what he wanted, but WordOfGod says there were enough setbacks that he had to wait a decade to get the ball rolling on the next big step in his plan, including the loss of an apprentice. That he was able to take one of those X-factors and befriend him early so he could turn him into a replacement apprentice is testament to his speed-chess abilities.
** It's eventually revealed that Palpatine did anticipate and plan for Maul's death (he's a Sith Lord, duh). However, the Jedi being sent to deal with the Trade Federation, as well as Amidala's arrival on Naboo, weren't part of his plans according to supplementary materials (Valorum consulted the Jedi without informing the Senate first, and he did expect Maul to succeed in retrieving Amidala). In fact, his original plan was that he and his agents would create turmoil, draw the occupation out for months or even years, and cause enough pressure to cow the Senate into electing him. Almost everything after Padmé turned up on Coruscant was improvisation and moving up the timetable considerably for example, by being elected a decade ''before'' the Clone Wars broke out, he was in danger of losing his position as Chancellor by the time of ''Revenge of the Sith'' as his legal term had technically expired, and he had to use his emergency powers to extend it.
* YouHaveFailedMe: It's heavily implied in ''Return Of The Jedi'' that Palpatine was even more horrific in how he punishes those who fail their task than the TropeNamer, Darth Vader.
--> '''Darth Vader:''' I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: He has virtually ''everyone'' who ever helped him with his EvilPlan killed at some point, almost including Anakin and Luke.

-->''"You don't know the power of the Dark Side. I must obey my master."''

The Sith identity of Anakin Skywalker, Jedi father of Luke Skywalker, who was seduced by the dark side of the Force and helped the Galactic Empire eradicate the Jedi Order. As the evil Emperor's top enforcer, he seeks to crush the fledgling Rebel Alliance by any means necessary.

For info on Anakin Skywalker, see Characters/StarWarsJediCouncil.
----
* AcePilot: A holdover skill from his days as a Jedi. Despite being outnumbered due to being the only pilots GenreSavvy enough to scramble against the rebel's "futile" attack, he and his handpicked [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Black Squadron]] shoot down many rebels during the FinalBattle of ''Film/ANewHope'', and would have done the same to [[TheHero Luke Skywalker]] if not for [[TheLancer Han Solo's]] BigDamnHeroes moment.
* AchillesHeel: [[ShockAndAwe Force lightning]]. His cyborg physiology means he can't use it without frying his own life support, and this is how [[BigBad Palpatine]] mortally injures Vader during the latter's HeroicSacrifice.
* ActionDad: His paternal instincts kick in just in time to save his son from Palpatine.
* ActuallyIAmHim: Says out to Luke that [[LukeIAmYourFather he is his father]].
* AlasPoorVillain: His redemption at the end of ''Return Of The Jedi'' elicits sympathy from Luke, in spite of the terrible things he did up until that point.
* AllEncompassingMantle: His [[TinTyrant armor]] comes with a black cloak draped around him.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Within the ''Star Wars'' universe, most people aren't sure if he's even a human being; some think that he might have been an alien or a droid.
* ArchnemesisDad: An archetypal example to Luke and Leia, following [[LukeIAmYourFather the big reveal]]. Poignantly, it's only after Luke is made aware of their lineage that he goes out of his way to redeem him.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Vader shows many of these qualities: lacks respect for authority, resorts to violence with minimal provocation, etc.
* ArtificialLimbs: ''All'' of them, three of which he lost during the duel that left him in his mechanized suit.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: Joins Obi-Wan and Yoda as a Force ghost after [[RedemptionEqualsDeath he dies]] in ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: His official title in the Empire is Supreme Commander of the military, the sort of job that, in RealLife armies, typically entails stamping a lot of paperwork. Vader, however, prefers to be down in the trenches with the {{Mooks}}.
* AwesomeMcCoolName: All Sith Lords come with this.
* {{Badass}}: One of the best-known examples in the franchise. Even if his growth in power was stunted by his near-death experience on Mustafar, he is still an extremely threatening warrior and is rightfully feared by all.
* BadassBaritone: Darth Vader is the more [[EvilSoundsDeep villainous]] example, but he's still one of the most badass villains on the screen.
* BadassCape: Wears a long black cape as part of his garb.
* BadassInCharge: Darth Vader make commands on behalf of the Emperor.
* BadBoss: His tendency to [[YouHaveFailedMe kill his subordinates for even the slightest mistake]] has made him a memetic archetype of this trope.
* BaldOfEvil: Due to his burns, although it's usually covered by his mask.
* BerserkButton: While Vader is usually very stoic, there are a few things that set him off. One, don't insult his Jedi religion doing so would earn you a force choke. Two, don't fail him or he'll choke you to death. Three, don't harm his son or he'll throw you off the death star.
* BassoProfundo: Creator/JamesEarlJones is the voice for Darth Vader.
* BatmanGambit: In ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'', Vader wants Luke but has no idea where to start looking for him after the Hoth evacuation. Instead, he pursues and captures Han and the others, correctly anticipating Luke sensing their suffering through the Force and racing to the rescue.
* BeingEvilSucks: When Luke [[IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight insists he can be turned from the dark side]] in ''Return Of The Jedi'', the way that Vader says, "It's too late for me," implies that he despises what he's become on a fundamental level, but [[IveComeTooFar sticks around largely because he believes it's too late to back out]].
* BigNo:
** After learning of Padmé's death in ''Revenge Of The Sith''.
** Added to the Blu-Ray re-release of ''Return Of The Jedi'' [[PapaWolf just before killing Palpatine]].
* BilingualBonus: There's Hebrew text written on his chest panel. It reads [[RedemptionEqualsDeath "His deeds will not be forgiven, until he merits."]]
* BlackCloak: Originally omits the cloak from his personalized leather Jedi attire, but as he gets darker, he starts donning it as well. He upgrades to the signature black cape and [[VaderBreath life-support system]] of Darth Vader after losing to Obi-Wan.
* BlackKnight: His appearance was modeled after the archetype, albeit in such a way where it would fit in a futuristic setting.
* BloodKnight: As much as he might want to kill Palpatine and become Emperor, realistically Vader is too much of a warrior to deal with all the politics and scheming involved with being the ruler of a Galactic Empire.
* BreakoutVillain: He barely even appears in [[Film/ANewHope the first film]], and when he does, he's usually being subordinate to Grand Moff Tarkin. He was even slated to be killed in the Death Star trench run, and was [[ItWasHisSled never intended to be Luke's father]]. Fortunately, however, Lucas decided to insert a shot of him escaping as a SequelHook, and he ended up becoming ''the'' big villain of the series, enough to warrant a three-movie-long StartOfDarkness arc.
* BrokenPedestal: His son, Luke, used to think he was a noble Jedi Knight that died years ago at the hands of Darth Vader. Now he knows not only did he not die at Vader's hands; he ''is'' Vader.
* CardCarryingVillain: Fully and proudly embraces TheDarkSide of TheForce, regardless of whatever [[WellIntentionedExtremist good]] [[LoveMakesYouEvil intentions]] he may have had at first.
* TheChessmaster: Vader is good at manipulating in order to get what he wants. His Master, The Emperor, is notches ahead of him in this department though.
* ClassicVillain: Fits all of the criteria as a {{Wrath}} villain: [[FallenHero brought to the dark side]] through his anger, clad from head to toe in [[TinTyrant black armor]], and has a very [[LukeIAmYourFather personal relationship]] with TheHero. He even has [[RedemptionEqualsDeath a classic death scene]].
* ClingyCostume: Darth Vader's armor is also his life-support system, and cannot be removed outside a special chamber.
* ClothesMakeTheLegend: His CoolHelmet and BlackCloak are so iconic that just their silhouette in the first teaser posters for ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' was enough to let everyone know just who the [[FromNobodyToNightmare cute kid in the picture]] would become.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Vader has Luke's friends tortured in Cloud City, and they are mystified as to why they are not being asked any questions. In reality, Vader is just doing it to lure Luke to him.
* CoolHelmet: The most noticeable piece of his "clothing".
* CoolMask: If he's not the most powerful villain in the galaxy, his full mask certainly ranks him amongst the scariest.
* CoolStarship: The ''[[TheBattlestar Devastator]]'', the ''[[BiggerIsBetter Executor]]'', and the [[SpaceFighter TIE]] [[SuperPrototype Advanced x1]].
* CoveredWithScars: His remaining human body beneath his armor is completely covered by severe burns.
* CurbStompBattle: The fight between Luke and Vader in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''. As the fight goes on, it's clear Luke is hopelessly outmatched especially after Vader cuts his hand off. Worse, Vader is beating up Luke spiritually, taunting Luke to use his anger to defeat him and then, just as Luke is clinging for dear life over an abyss, reveals that he is Luke's father. By the time Luke is rescued by his friends fleeing Cloud City, he's both a physical, emotional and mental wreck.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Obi-Wan calls Vader "more machine now than man; twisted and evil".
* {{Cyborg}}: Vader loses all of his limbs and receives extensive damage to his internal organs, particularly his lungs, hence the CoolMask and the VaderBreath.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: Vader had no choice but to "abandon" [[SeparatedAtBirth Luke and Leia]] because [[MuggleFosterParents he didn't even know that they were still alive]], let alone both his children. As soon as he learned otherwise, [[WeCanRuleTogether he planned a nice family bonding experience so that they could get to know each other.]]
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Even though Vader uses his leverage against Lando to keep Leia, Chewie, and the droids on Cloud City, he also has the sense to repair the hyperdrive of the ''Millennium Falcon'' but deactivate it, just in case they try to escape. As the hyperdrive is technically working perfectly, any hunt for problems will be a wild goose chase. Luckily for our heroes, Artoo had accessed information about this on Cloud City, and reactivates the hyperdrive just in time.
* DarkIsEvil: His dark costume compliments his use of TheDarkSide. In the end, though, Luke proves that [[DarkIsNotEvil there is still good buried deep within his twisted and evil form]].
* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: He can't live without his suit for more than a few minutes.
* DavidVersusGoliath: Luke vs. Vader. Not only is Vader [[EvilIsBigger taller and bigger]], he's also much more skilled and experienced with the Force.
* DespairEventHorizon: The news of Padmé's death, coupled with the belief that he was the one who killed her, crushes whatever humanity he had until that point in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
* TheDeterminator: One of the most persistent and determined characters in the series. Vader was utterly determined to get his own son to turn to TheDarkSide and join him so that they could rule the galaxy together as father and son.
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: See RedemptionEqualsDeath.
* DisappearedDad: Darth Vader is this for Luke for a while, though Luke doesn't learn the truth until ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''.
* DispenseWithThePleasantries: His blunt dismissal of [[MookLieutenant Moff Jerjerrod's]] flattery in ''Return Of The Jedi'' provides [[TropeNamer the trope name]].
* DontMakeMeDestroyYou: The TropeNamer, during his famous [[LukeIAmYourFather conversation]] with Luke in ''The Empire Strikes Back''. The reason that he doesn't want to destroy Luke is because [[ItWasHisSled he's his dad]].
* TheDragon: He is Emperor Palpatine's main enforcer who personally dispatches any major threats to the Empire. He also serves as this to Grand Moff Tarkin in ''Film/ANewHope''.
** DragonWithAnAgenda: He's implied to be concocting a plot to [[TheStarscream overthrow the Emperor]] via [[WeCanRuleTogether his offer for Luke to rule by his side]] in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''.
** DragonInChief: [[WordOfGod Word of George Lucas]] is that Darth Vader was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen intended to be this early on]] (possibly sharing the spot with other Imperial officers). Traces of this remain as late in the game as the A New Hope novelization, which describes The Emperor as a weak-willed man controlled by ambitious underlings. The actual movies as released, however, make it plain that while Vader is incredibly powerful and evil, the Emperor is worse on every imaginable scale. In the prequel trilogy, it was strongly implied that Darth Vader was initially well on his way to becoming this when he first joined the dark side: his powers were growing so rapidly that even The Emperor himself theorized that Vader would soon eclipse his own abilities and potentially overthrow him. However, after Vader suffered his near-fatal injuries on Mustafar (including having all of his natural limbs amputated), his powers with the Force were greatly reduced and he was never able to exceed the Emperor's skills again.
** TheHeavy: The most prominent villain in the series, although he is always subservient to Palpatine, the true BigBad. In ''Film/ANewHope'', he and Tarkin are [[CoDragons somewhat equals]], save that Tarkin is the one actually in charge of the Death Star, thus making him Vader's superior.
** MouthOfSauron: In addition to serving as TheDragon, performs this duty for Emperor Palpatine. It's not obvious at first glance, but notice that Vader has frequent contact with Imperial commanders, to whom he frequently gives commands. Palpatine is never shown speaking to any of his other underlings except Vader in the original trilogy (with the exception of "Fire at will, commander!"
** NobleTopEnforcer: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] by Vader at the beginning of Return of the Jedi, when explaining the significance of the The Emperor's arrival to his subordinate.
-->'''Darth Vader:''' "I hope so, Captain, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am!"
** TheStarscream: In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin believes he can overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy with Padme, likely foreshadowed in Attack of the Clones with his mistrust in Senatorial politics. Then he tries it again with his son in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Special mention given because it does not involve the typical Sith MO of killing their masters over power, for it seems more like Anakin does not like how Palpatine rules, and wants to supplant him and perhaps do it better.
* TheDreaded: Darth Vader, who is a six-and-a-half-foot-tall, caped black knight with magical powers and super strength. He makes a triumphant entrance to the film's famous soundtrack, cape swirling, and lifts a captive soldier up and snaps his neck with one hand as an EstablishingCharacterMoment. It just goes from there.
* DyingAsYourself: His act of redemption reverts him back to Anakin Skywalker, but also ends up [[RedemptionEqualsDeath taking his life]].
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: Picks up the Emperor (despite missing a hand) and tosses him into the Death Star's bowels while Force Lightning surges through his body. While he doesn't survive, his spirit becomes one with the light side of the Force and is finally at peace.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The way he marches into the ''Tantive IV'', along with the music that accompanies his arrival, instantly signifies that he's a bad guy (in case the ObviouslyEvil appearance didn't tip the viewer off). And in case anyone doubted his strength, we see him crushing Captain Antilles's neck with his bare hands a few scenes later.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** Padmé, for whom he turned to the Dark Side in an attempt to protect. It's telling that, in spite of how monstrous he became in ''Revenge Of The Sith'', the first thing he asks about is if she's safe... Which makes the fact that he was responsible for her death all the more saddening.
** His son, Luke; you can tell by his hesitance to kill him or force him into a FaceHeelTurn that he really cares. This ends up being what ultimately causes Vader's redemption in ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* EvilCounterpart: Darth Vader is naturally the evil counterpart to Luke Skywalker (a living incarnation of the evil that Luke is perfectly capable of).
* EvilCripple: He is a severe burn victim and was repeatedly mutilated, so he has to rely on his suit. Given his slow descent into villainy, the deformities were more icing on the cake than the direct cause.
* EvilFormerFriend: He was once a good friend to Obi-Wan before he fell to TheDarkSide.
* EvilIsBigger: Vader stands over 2 meters (though the good guys have Chewbacca, who's even taller).
* EvilIsHammy: Definitely not as much as The Emperor. Vader can come off overly expressive because he wears a mask.
* EvilMakeover: Goes from a heroic Jedi to someone who is covered on armour and a mask after being severely burned and injured and doing a FaceHeelTurn.
* EvilMakesYouMonstrous: Vader got all his flesh burned off and earned a black skull-faced suit.
* EvilMakesYouUgly: Vader (Anakin at the time) wouldn't have fallen into that lava if he hadn't turned evil. Even before falling into the lava, Vader (Anakin) experienced slight changes in appearance (the glowing yellow eyes in particular).
* EvilOverlooker: Vader does this a lot so much that he could be the TropeCodifier.
* EvilOverlord: Despite being TheDragon, Vader still maintains a position of high command (second only to his master) and has his own set of troops (the 501st Legion, AKA "Vader's Fist") and CoolStarship (the ''Executor'').
* EvilSoundsDeep: An archetypal film example. In fact, David Prowse's voice needed to be overdubbed with that of Creator/JamesEarlJones to get the desired effect.
* EvilWearsBlack: Vader wears all black.
* TheFaceless: Darth Vader spends almost the entire original trilogy as this until he is finally unmasked at the end of ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* FacialHorror: Due to suffering severe burns, his real face is pale-skinned and ravaged.
* FallenHero: He's not just a former Jedi; he was also TheChosenOne prophesied to destroy the Sith and bring balance to TheForce.
* FamousLastWords: "Tell your sister... you were right..."
* FateWorseThanDeath: The operation that placed him into his suit was extremely painful, and left him stuck in an elaborate iron lung in constant physical pain, as well as emotional due to the belief of having killed his wife.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Vader encourages his son to join TheDarkSide along with him. Luke [[IncorruptiblePurePureness refuses to ever do so]].
* FreudianExcuse: He turned to the dark side to save his wife from DeathByChildbirth, only to kill her in blind rage. Even before that, he grew up through a hellish existence as a slave on Tatooine, lost his mother to Tusken Raiders, and was generally put down by his superiors in the Jedi Order, leaving him with hatred for everyone and everything, [[BeingEvilSucks himself included]].
* GeniusBruiser: Vader's cybernetics may make him one of the physically strongest characters in the series, but he also displays a cold and calculating nature and attacks at a surprisingly high speed. Case in point, the entire plot of ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' is his personal BatmanGambit to trap Luke and get him to convert to the dark side, and possibly even to help him overthrow the Emperor.
* GlovedFistOfDoom: His fists are clenched all the time except when he's blocking lasers with his hands.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Vader is (supposedly) so scarred and mutilated he can't survive long without being entirely encased in a pressurized suit of life support systems and has four artificial limbs. He chooses to armor this suit and uses it to make himself more intimidating. Before Anakin became Darth Vader and was made of scar tissue and mechanical replacement parts, he had a scar on the left side of his face near his eye and had already lost one arm.
* HandicappedBadass: His ability to use the Force is stunted due to his injuries and cybernetic suit, leaving him with a broken shadow of his former self's fighting style. Even still, he manages to be one of the most proficient single lightsaber users.
* HeadBob: David Prowse does this very well, making Vader an emotive character despite being [[TheFaceless perpetually masked]].
* HeartbrokenBadass: Vader is revealed to be this trope in the prequel trilogy. Sure, he was pretty {{Badass}} during the Clone Wars as Anakin Skywalker, but as soon as his wife died by his own hand, well, ''Film/ANewHope'' and ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' can testify to just how more threatening he became.
* HeelFaceTurn: Turns back to the light side of the Force as Anakin Skywalker in order to [[LoveRedeems protect]] [[PapaWolf his son]].
* HeroKiller: He was already infamous for killing several Jedi during Order 66 and the decades afterward, but he establishes himself as one in ''A New Hope'' when he kills Obi-Wan.
* HeroicSacrifice: He sacrifices his life to save his son from Emperor Palpatine, effectively turning him back to the light side of the Force.
* IsThatWhatHeToldYou: Darth Vader telling Luke he's his father in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'', contradicting what Obi-Wan had told Luke about Vader killing his father in ''Film/ANewHope''.
* ImmuneToBullets: Darth Vader can stop blaster shots with his bare hand.
* ImplacableMan: It's almost near impossible to beat Vader and if you do, he will come back and hunt you down with determination. Vader never backs down.
* IveComeTooFar: The only reason he sticks around with Palpatine and the Empire after learning of his wife's death is because he believes that it is too late to redeem himself - and given that he murdered many of his former allies personally (some of which were children), this perspective makes a degree of sense.
* {{Jerkass}}: Big-time. In-universe, many officers fear working under him due to his BadBoss tendencies.
* LargeAndInCharge: Darth Vader is by far the tallest human in the series, played by the 1.98m (6'6") actor David Prowse. He would have been even taller had Prowse and the 2.10m (7'3") Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) not mutually agreed on which parts they would play.
* LargeHam: As Prowse gestures plentifully and Jones speaks bombastically, the result is simply glorious.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[CrowningMusicOfAwesome The Imperial March]]. Major and minor key versions of it are all over the place during his key scenes.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: One of the reasons why he turned to the dark side was to save his wife from death. Unfortunately, turning evil [[SelfFulfillingProphecy only ends up contributing to her death]].
* LoveRedeems: His love for Luke, his son, redeems him in the end and reverts Darth Vader back into Anakin Skywalker.
* LukeIAmYourFather: The TropeNamer, derived from the climactic scene in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' wherein he [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin tells Luke he is his father]] ([[BeamMeUpScotty though not with those exact words]]).
* MalevolentMaskedMan: His mask and armor are modeled after ancient Sith armor, and make him a PerpetualFrowner.
* ManOnFire: Catching on fire and having his skin burned off necessitated his placement into his life-support suit.
* MasterSwordsman: Combines elements of multiple styles to become a devastatingly effective duelist despite his bulky [[{{Cyborg}} cybernetics]] and inability to use [[ShockAndAwe Force Lightning]].
* MeaningfulName: "Vader" is derived from the word "in''vader''". It's also Dutch for "Father".
* MightyGlacier: Vader is quite slow, however, Vader himself can take quite a bit of punishment due to his armor and the Force, and his attacks are devastating, due to the strength his cybernetic limbs give him.
* MilkingTheGiantCow: Exaggerated movement is necessary for a masked character, and Vader is a [[TropesAreTools well-played]] example.
* MysteriousParent: To Luke and Leia.Luke discovers that he is Vader's son in Episode 5.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Vader displays traits of this with his master [[BigBad Palpatine]]...[[DragonWithAnAgenda when he's not actively trying to subvert him]].
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: His Star Destroyer in ''A New Hope'', the ''Devastator'', and his ''Super'' Star Destroyer in ''The Empire Strikes Back'' and ''Return Of The Jedi'', the ''Executor''.
* NeckLift: [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique Does this]] to Captain Antilles in ''Film/ANewHope''. The good captain does not survive the interrogation.
* NeverBareheaded: He's seen only twice without his helmet: the first time in a special pressure chamber, the second time while dying.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: Vader is a [[BlackCloak black cloaked]] [[PsychicPowers psychic]] human [[{{Cyborg}} cyborg]] [[EvilSorcerer sorcerer]] samurai [[BlackKnight Sith]] [[MasterSwordsman swordsman]] with [[VaderBreath a severe breathing problem]].
* NomDeGuerre: Combined with ThatManIsDead; when he became a Sith Lord, he ditched the Anakin Skywalker in favor of Darth Vader, effectively [[DeathOfPersonality "killing" Anakin]] (or so he thinks).
* NotSoDifferent: He and Luke. Like Anakin, Luke sees that he has just repaid Vader's violence in kind, but also sees his own prosthetic hand as symbolizing the possibility that he's becoming like his father. This was foreshadowed earlier in The Empire Strikes Back, when Yoda sends Luke into a cave to be attacked by a masked warrior brandishing a lightsaber, looking much like Darth Vader. Luke quickly defeats the warrior, decapitating it. The warrior's mask falls off, and its face is exactly like Luke's. Yoda pointed out before Luke went in that the cave only contains what you take into it (i.e. it shows you yourself, and your weaknesses) in fact telling Luke he won't need his weapons. Luke completely ignored him, leading to that sequence.
* ObviouslyEvil: Vader wears very large black suit, a menacing cape, and a [[TheFaceless face-concealing helmet]]. His name also sounds like "invader," as well as "dark father" in Dutch.
* OminousOperaCape: Has a large, black cape.
* OneHandedIsCool: Wields his [[LaserBlade lightsaber]], a notoriously difficult-to-control weapon, one-handed in order to intimidate enemies. Being a {{Cyborg}} helps.
* PapaWolf: This is ultimately the reason why he redeems himself, by killing the Emperor for attempting to torture his son to death with Force Lightning.
* TheParanoiac: Darth Vader fits this personality type quite well, as years of war, the death of his mother, and mountains of shame and guilt over the atrocities he kept committing turned him into a ruthless ControlFreak with delusions of "[[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans bring(ing) order to the Galaxy]]" via crushing any and all opposition to Imperia rule. He is filled with self-loathing and takes it out on others, [[BadBoss including his subordinates]] for the [[SarcasmMode heinous crime]] of [[YouHaveFailedMe failing him]]. Its strongly implied that he wants revenge on the Emperor for manipulating him into being this way, but he is simply too afraid of him to do anything about it, at least until [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes his son comes into play]].
* PetTheDog: He allows Chewbacca to rebuild C-3PO shortly after the latter's capture, explaining why Chewbacca was seen repairing C-3PO without too much fear of being caught in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'', and also the fact that he forces Boba Fett's rifle down when Chewie flies off the handle. The fact that Anakin was in fact C-3PO's creator wasn't established until 20 years later when ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' came out.
* PhysicalReligion: "[[Awesome/StarWars I find your lack of faith disturbing]]."
* PsychicPowers: His most frequent uses of the Force involve telekinesis and choking.
* PsychicStrangle: TropeCodifier, having first done this to Admiral Motti in ''Film/ANewHope''. That time he was stopped by Tarkin, but in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' he [[YouHaveFailedMe executes]] two of his officers this way.
* PuttingOnTheReich: His helmet was obviously inspired by the German [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stahlhelm Stahlhelm]]. WordOfGod also stated that his life support suit being all black was deliberate in an attempt to create an analogy to the Schutzstaffel of NaziGermany.
* RageHelm: His iconic [[CoolHelmet helmet]] has a [[BlackEyesOfEvil chillingly]] [[DeathGlare penetrating]] stare.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Sacrifices himself to save Luke and kill the Emperor in ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* ResistanceIsFutile: "You are beaten. It is useless to resist. Don't let yourself be destroyed as Obi-Wan did."
* RousseauWasRight: He wasn't born evil.
* SecretIdentity: Very few people know that he was once Anakin Skywalker, and the only time he brings up his past is if someone mentions it.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Palpatine was strongly implied to be one of two people directly responsible for his conception via the midi-chlorians (the other being his Sith Master, Darth Plagueis), so Vader/Anakin killing Palpatine late into ''Return Of The Jedi'' would qualify as such, technically speaking.
* SensorCharacter: Can sense when other Force-sensitives - notably Obi-Wan and Luke - are nearby. Might have also picked up [[LukeIAmYourFather Leia]] this way on Echo Base in ''The Empire Strikes Back'', although he seemed to mistake her for Luke.
* SeriesMascot: The character most often used to represent the ''Star Wars'' franchise as a whole. He made the cover of Time Magazine ''twice'', in 1980 and 2005.
* ShadowArchetype: To [[LikeFatherLikeSon Luke]]. Both expert Lightsaber duelists, both masters of TheForce, both reliant on prosthetics, and the [[LukeIAmYourFather family connection]] only added to their similarities. The prequel trilogy tried to emphasize them further by giving Anakin's backstory parallels to Luke's. Luke was even offered a chance to turn to TheDarkSide; the difference between Vader and Luke was that Luke opted to [[IncorruptiblePurePureness remain in the light.]]
* SinisterGeometry: His obsidian-black [[RageHelm helmet]] is designed to evoke a human skull, from angular cheekbones to rictus grin to BlackEyesOfEvil.
* TheSlowWalk: Does this in his very first scene in ''A New Hope''.
* SoleSurvivor: Was the only survivor of the destruction of the Galactic Empire's Death Star in the first movie.
* SourOutsideSadInside: A lot of Darth Vader's aggression can be interpreted as coming from the pain and misery that his HeelFaceTurn brought him in the first place. This is first made apparent in ''Return Of The Jedi'', and becomes obvious in hindsight when one considers the events of the Prequel Trilogy.
* SpaceFighter: His prototype TIE Advanced x1.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: Towards Luke, which is justified if you know the twist.
* TheStarscream: Blatantly suggests he could overthrow Palpatine so he and Padmé [[WeCanRuleTogether can rule together]] in ''Revenge Of The Sith''. His interest in recruiting Luke for the same reason suggests that this desire carries over well into ''The Empire Strikes Back'' and ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* TheStoic: Vader normally has control over his emotions which is a contrast to his Jedi alter ego of Anakin Skywalker, who was very hotheaded and emotional. The reason that Vader probably became so emotionless is because he has shut off his emotions for the most part and has stopped caring due to being driven by the Dark Side. When he gets angry, it is more of a TranquilFury.
* StudentAndMasterTeam: With Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious from Episodes III-VI.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Beneath his helmet his eyes have yellow irises due to him being a Dark Sider.
* SupportingProtagonist: He has the central role in the series and is arguably its most iconic character, but never has the leading role. In the prequels, he's arguably TheLancer to Obi-Wan's Hero, and in the original trilogy he is TheDragon to Palpatine's BigBad.
* TaughtByExperience: [[AnArmAndALeg losing all of his limbs]] apparently taught him restraint and caution when dueling in the original trilogy, where he uses [[BreakingLecture Breaking Lectures]], PsychicPowers, [[CombatPragmatist ambushes]], and [[TheSlowWalk intimidation]] rather than the [[TheBerserker berserker]] tactics that lost him the [[RevengeOfTheSith duel on Mustafar]].
* TinTyrant: Vader is probably the most obvious example, if not the TropeCodifier: he was most likely inspired by the Witch King of Angmar and Sauron, Doctor Doom, and armoured samurai from Japanese films, but he is probably the most famous example in popular culture. Vader's armor also doubles as a life support system, stemming from injuries he sustained in an old battle with Obi-Wan.
* TragicHero: The saga, in its whole, is ultimately about the story of Anakin Skywalker's fall to the Dark Side, and how his redemption saved the galaxy.
* TragicMonster: Vader counts in a physical sense. He became a bad guy before that, but his massive injuries and horrific reconstruction made him a monster that could never be fully whole again.
* TragicVillain: Knows what he does is evil, and hates himself for it; [[MyMasterRightOrWrong he must obey his master.]]
* ToughLove: How does he get Luke to stop fighting him? Well, he cuts his arm off, which sends his Light-saber spiraling down the vortex. For someone who discovered his long-lost son, he's surprisingly brutal towards him.
* TwentyFourHourArmor: Vader's armor holds all his life support systems, and if removed outside of a special chamber he will die rather quickly.
* UltimateEvil: Darth Vader's mask symbolized not only his evil, but the notion that his face must be so horrifying concealing it could not make it worse. The fannish disappointment was rife when the mask was finally removed, and revealed what one fan called "Uncle Fester with blue sparkles". This was probably an intentional subversion. The notion that Vader underneath the frightening armor was intentionally made to be a broken and pathetic individual has been noted in numerous interviews. In Lucas's own words, Vader is less a monster and more "a sad man who made a deal with the Devil...and lost".
* UsedToBeASweetKid: If you can believe it, the Dark Lord of the Sith used to be an adorable little Tatooine slave that had dreams of seeing the Galaxy.
* VaderBreath: The TropeNamer. Especially prominent in ''The Empire Strikes Back''.
* VillainBall: Provoking Luke into an UnstoppableRage when dueling him in ''Return Of The Jedi''.
* VillainousBSOD: He's in one for the entirety of the Original Trilogy, as shown by the unenergetic, almost catatonic way he goes about his duties. Contrast that with the fiery passion he had as Anakin for an idea of just how hard Padmé's death hit him. It takes watching his son being brutally tortured by Palpatine to finally snap him back to his senses.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: In Luke. After all, Luke is his son.
* VillainProtagonist: According to [[WordOfGod George Lucas]], the film franchise is fundamentally about Anakin and his progression from innocence to a force of good, his [[FaceHeelTurn fall to evil]], and subsequent [[RedemptionEqualsDeath redemption]].
* WeaponOfChoice: [[CoolSword A]] [[ColorCodedForYourConvenience red]] [[LaserBlade lightsaber]].
* WeCanRuleTogether: Suggests this to Luke during his BreakingLecture in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''. Prior to that, he suggests this to Padmé in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: His reasons for turning to the dark side involved trying to prevent Padmé's death. Once [[SelfFulfillingProphecy that backfires]], however, he decides to [[CardCarryingVillain embrace the dark side a bit more closely]].
* WolverinePublicity: Even when the main focus of Lucasfilm's marketing is a series that doesn't involve Vader as a Sith Lord, such as the first two prequels and ''The Clone Wars'', one can be absolutely sure to see zillions upon zillions of different products featuring Vader in the current merchandising line. Often, original trilogy characters are included in the line, or the line itself becomes partly original trilogy-focused, for the sake of including Vader merchandise.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: He was revealed to be one in ''Return Of The Jedi''. Anakin's final transformation into Darth Vader is shown to be caused by losing everything and everyone he cares for, albeit due to his own actions.
* {{Yandere}}: Not very prominent, but he seems to [[VillainTakesAnInterest have an interest towards Luke]] this way.
* YouAreInCommandNow: He promotes Captain Piett to Admiral just after [[YouHaveFailedMe force choking]] [[GeneralFailure Admiral Ozzel]], whose body hadn't even hit the floor yet.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: WordOfGod states that the reason Obi-Wan had Luke Skywalker go to Tatooine after birth to live with the Owens despite it being Vader's home planet is because Darth Vader is unwilling to ever return to Tatooine due to painful memories of the place.
* YouHaveFailedMe: See BadBoss. Darth Vader's "You have failed me for the last time" before choking Admiral Ozzel and promoting Captain Piett to replace him before the body hits the floor. True to form, Piett survives a number of failures, once Vader realizes the heroes may actually count as a legitimate challenge. It helps that he didn't take any foolish chances like Ozzel was punished for. Ozzel's death deserves special mention, as Vader is doing it over the intercom/viewscreen. He's not even in the same room as Ozzel.
** He does it again to the hapless Captain Needa before the film's even halfway done, even when Needa had the foresight to apologize to Vader for losing track of the Millenium Falcon (There's a reason Vader says "Apology accepted, Captain Needa"). The turnover rate for Imperial officers must be appalling.
** And ultimately subverted by the end of the film, when the Falcon escapes to lightspeed. Piett visibly soils himself as Vader strides toward him, only to brush right past, apparently too depressed about losing his son to kill any more underlings today.
** It's noted in one of the novels that the fastest way to promotion in the Empire was to get yourself assigned to Vader's flagship, the Executor. The flip side of that coin is, as Pellaeon says, that this meant the crew of the Executor was entirely staffed by people who were either hypercompetent or very lucky, since they were the only ones who survived. Which meant that when it was destroyed at Endor, the Empire lost more than a really big ship, they lost the best of the officer corps.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: He and Anakin get along in the Citdadel trilogy of ''The Clone Wars'', foreshadowing their later working relationship in ''Film/ANewHope''.
* {{Hypocrite}}: His going back on his ultimatum and has Alderaan blown up anyway is all the more vile when he acts shocked and enraged that Leia lied about where the rebels were stationed.
* IcyBlueEyes: His eyes has a cold blue shade, that match his unpleasant personality.

[[folder:Count Denetrius Vidian]]
!!Count Denetrius Vidian
->'''Appears in:''' ''Literature/ANewDawn''

The Empire's leading efficiency expert eight years after the Empire took power. A ruthless cyborg who believes in efficiency over safety, he arrives on Gorse to boost Thorilide production, although he may have some ulterior motives. [[spoiler:His real name is Lemuel Tharsa.]]
----
* AndIMustScream: He sees his time hospitalized and having his flesh eaten away as this. He threatens to do the same to Kanan and Hera, and for even longer for experimentation purposes.
-->'''Count Vidian:''' Can you imagine what it is to live without senses, without any means of interacting with your environment?\\

----
* SmugSnake: Every scene with him has him smugly assuring Vidian that he is sure he can meet the new material quotas, all while plotting the Count's downfall.
* TheStarscream: He is plotting to discredit Vidian and take his position. To this end, he convinced [[spoiler:Commander Nibiru Chamas]] to serve as his spy on the ''Ultimatium'' and gather information on Vidian.
