Darth Sidious' first Sith apprentice, a Dathomirian Zabrak warrior who is skilled with a double-bladed lightsaber. Although seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Naboo, his hatred for the young Jedi proves strong enough for him to survive his injuries and seek vengeance against Kenobi throughout the Clone Wars.

However, while she is guiding him to an extent, they both have their own reasons for wanting revenge against Sidious, and they are both willing risk their lives for each other. After Talzin dies, Sidious notes that without her, Maul has no purpose.]]

* UnexpectedCharacter: Up until Savage Opress's last episode in the third season of ''The Clone Wars'', there was '''no indication whatsoever''' that he would appear in the show, much less that he was alive and well, or would become a major antagonist.

* StatuesqueStunner: Ventress is 179 cm/5 feet 10 tall, she is considered rather attractive by multiple characters, and she's MsFanservice on ''The Clone Wars''.

* DelinquentHair: By ''Dark Disciple'' Ventress has grown a mohawk since her last appearance on ''The Clone Wars''. In contrast to her brown hair in her TroubledBackStoryFlashback in the series, it's white-blonde in the novel, however it is unclear which one is her original hair color and which one was dyed.

* ButchLesbian: The Nightsisters look and act the part.
** PsychoLesbian: They also abuse the Nightbrothers, try to assassinate Count Dooku, and have the ability to summon an ArmyOfTheDead.

When she reveals this to Anakin, he even has to admit, albeit silently, that she's completely right.

* PragmaticVillainy: In season 5 of ''The Clone Wars'', he realizes that he and Savage can't just run around killing and looting to survive because it would draw the Jedi to them.

** A few times in ''The Clone Wars'', notably his season 4 appearances, as well as the season 5 premiere.

* WolverinePublicity: He's all over the advertising for ''The Phantom Menace'' and seasons four and five of ''The Clone Wars''. Despite this, his screen-time in the film is fairly brief, and he only appears in six episodes of the series.

* EvilCounterpart: It's never given any focus in-universe, but (as outlined in "DarthVaderClone", above) Savage has quite a few things in common with Anakin. His relationship with Maul can even be seen as a twisted mirror of Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship.

* DumbMuscle: His main flaw, as his first solution to anything is to hack it in two with his lightsaber, which is a liabilty chessmasters like Count Dooku and Darth Maul can't have.

Although he says that he sees Savage as an apprentice more than he sees him as a brother, he treats his fellow Nightbrother significantly better as an apprentice than any of the other Sith treat their apprentices, and he is clearly upset when Savage is killed by Sidious. He also has a purely benevolent relationship with Talzin, [[spoiler:who is his mother]].

** After experiencing Dooku's Force lightning firsthand, Savage's first reply is to ask how he could defend against such an attack. Being quite GenreSavvy himself, Dooku refuses to tell him.

* LightningBruiser: She's extremely fast, and [[MusclesAreMeaningless much stronger than she looks]]. When she's fighting a [[EmpoweredBadassNormal post-transformation]] [[TheJuggernaut Savage Opress]], however, she's little more than a FragileSpeedster; her physical blows did little more than annoy him.

She even has two different tactics: the "nod-and-wink" is supposedly more subtle (altough it's not shown), whereas the "full-on gambit" is flat-out active seduction and unsubtle flirtation.

* KillEmAll: General Grievous's attack on Dathomir in "Massacre" left the Nightsisters with only two survivors, and at the end of ''Son of Dathomir'', [[spoiler: it is implied that all of the Nightbrothers except for Darth Maul were wiped out.]] As of the end of ''Dark Disciple'', [[spoiler: it would seem the Dathomirian species is now extinct with the exception of Maul.]]

* CoolSword: There is no denying that the double-bladed lightsaber is very cool. During his takeover of Mandalore, Maul started using a darksaber, which is a lightsaber with a black blade that resembles a machete.
