A remote jungle and swamp planet bathed in blood-red light from its star, Dathomir's population is naturally strong in the Force. The men of the planet (the Nightbrothers) are dominated by the females (the Nightsisters), who use the dark side of the Force in numerous rituals.

* ArmyOfTheDead: The Nightsisters have a "[[AnimateDead Chant of Resurection]]", which allows the user the raise their dead in the graveyard. Apparently Old Daka was the only one who knew how to perform the spell.
* BizarreSexualDimorphism: The women look like extremely pale skinned humans while the males look like their Zabrak ancestors.
* BlackSpeech: The Nightsister's use a rather creepy sounding language for their enchantments.

* HalfHumanHybrid: [[http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dathomirian According to the other wiki]], they're the result of generations of cross-breeding between the Human Nightsisters and the [[RubberForeheadAliens Zabrak]] Nightbrothers. Since Zabraks are a HumanSubspecies, this is easily justified.

* LadyLand: Dathomir culture is invariably a {{matriarchy}}. Taken UpToEleven with the Nightsisters; their menfolk, the Nightbrothers, are actually forbidden from sharing their home at all and live in a different region.

Totally alone and driven mad with grief, she fell to the Dark Side and then became a pawn to Count Dooku. Then Dooku betrays her and tries to kill her at the behest of ''his'' master. Then her entire clan is wiped out in retribution for her surviving the assassination attempt and proceeding to try and pay Dooku back in kind.
* BountyHunter: She temporarly joins Boba Fett's group in "Bounty", and becomes a full-time bounty hunter afterwards.

The planet is a matriarchy, where only the women, who practice Force-based "witchcraft", hold power, existing in a clannish structure that constantly vies for power. This is the result of an exiled Jedi Knight, a human female named Allya, who took refuge on the planet when she was cast out of the Jedi Order and restructured the human colonists into a matriarchal magocracy. The planet became infamous for its Nightsisters, a clan of exiles and criminals who banded together to devise a new style of witchcraft based on the Dark Side of the Force, mating predominantly with Zabrak slaves to become a recognizable subsect of the Dathomir populace.

The EU is confused as to whether "Dathomirian" refers only to the Nightsisters and Nightbrothers, or if it is a general term for the sentients native to Dathomir.

* BizarreSexualDimorphism: Amongst the "Nightbreed" clan, the women (Nightsisters) look like extremely pale skinned humans while the males (Nightbrothers) look like their Zabrak ancestors.

* PlanetOfHats: Played pretty straight. It's true that the cultural norm for the Witches of Dathomir is to embrace the Light Side and the Nightsisters are rogues for embracing the Dark Side, and that the Nightsisters are ''much'' nastier to males than the Daughters of Allya, but both sides still play the "primitive, witchcraft-using Space Amazon" card, so that's not enough to count as a ZigZaggedTrope example..

** Males are too, however, due to cultural prejudice, they are never trained and in fact most Dathomir of either sex don't realise that their menfolk are Force Sensitives as well.

** To Anakin. They both used to be slaves on a remote CrapsackWorld, have been rescued by a Jedi, who were considered somewhat "rogues" by others, and both of them became the apprentices of a Sith Lord. Interesting to note, that while Anakin started slipping closer and closer to the Dark side in Season 4, she seems to have started to work on a HeelFaceTurn at the end of the same season.

* HeroKiller: He killed two Jedi in his debut episode (with [[CurbStompBattle ease]], no less) and, in "Revival", Jedi Master and Council member Adi Gallia, a Jedi Master and member of the High Council.

* DiabolicalMastermind: He attempts to become one in Season 5 of ''The Clone Wars'', even referring to himself and Savage as "crime lords". Maul's first attempt to build a criminal enterprise blows up in his face (partly because Hondo's much nicer to his men than most criminals), but with the assistance of Pre Vizsla and Death Watch, Maul manages to co-opt the Black Suns and the Hutt Cartel, as well as recruit the Pyke family (a group of spice dealers), forming them into a criminal empire. Even after Sidious captures him and imprisons him on Stygeon, the Shadow Collective continues to remain loyal to Maul (with the exception of the Hutt Cartel, which deserted) and busts him out. However, it partially falls apart when General Grievous leads an army to Zanbar, annihilates the base there and forces Maul retreat. The [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Mandalorian]] members are willing to fight to the end during the Battle of Ord Mantell while the Black Sun and Pykes are a little more reluctant. [[spoiler:It comes crashing down when the Separatists launch a three-front attack against the Shadow Collective. * PsychopathicManchild: Shows some signs of this before being healed, hiding behind boxes and being lured out when he follows a light conjured by Mother Talzin in an almost childlike state of fascination.

** This gets [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]] during his quest to build his own army. First, when's he recruiting criminal factions, he does so either by promising them wealth or threatening to kill them (whereas the Mandalorians follow him [[AsskickingEqualsAuthority due to how classic Mandalorian succession works and their shared hatred for Jedi]] and the Nightbrothers due to Mother Talzin's connections). Hondo Ohnaka, who Maul temporarily bought some of his men's loyalty from, knew from the get-go that working with him was an ultimately unprofitable venture because not only is Maul clearly insane, he's really only interested in revenge on Obi-Wan, and buys his own men back from Maul by telling them this. In ''Son of Dathomir'', the Hutt Clans immediately desert from the Shadow Collective after Maul gets captured by Darth Sidious. When Maul gets into a revenge game with Sidious, he ends up going to war with the Separatist Alliance. [[spoiler: The Black Sun and Pyke leaders, who are really just mercenaries as opposed to the [[ProudWarriorRace Mandalorians and Nightbrothers]], become wary of Maul's grudge after they almost face death at the hands of a droid firing squad during the Battle of Ord Mantell. After Maul captures Dooku, the Separatists attack the Shadow Collective on three different fronts, and [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere Black Sun and the Pykes]] decide to bail out after getting no help from Maul. After that and the death of Mother Talzin, Maul has very few allies left.]]

* MeaningfulName: Asajj might come from the sanskrit "assajan" which means wicked, crooked, sinful, all of which fits her role and personality prior to her CharacterDevelopment. It's also a ShoutOut to Kurosawa's Film/ThroneOfBlood, where Asaji is the name of the film's version of Lady Macbeth. It can also be delivered from the Japanese "asahi" meaning "morning sun" reflecting her turning away from the Dark Side.
