BaldOfAwesome. As the cover of her novel suggests, she eventually decided to grow her hair back.
* BaldWoman: Not naturally: flashbacks show she used to have a mohawk. Now she shaves her head. She eventually grew it back.

Added DiffLines:

* EvenEvilHasStandards: She is appalled when she realizes that the "cargo" she was set to deliver on Quarzite was actually a slave girl. She could relate to the slave and worked to set her free... While ensuring she still received profits from both faking her delivery to Outa Blank and honestly giving her back to her brother, of course.

Added DiffLines:

* MadeASlave: She was given up at birth to a criminal. However, the man who purchased her apparently [[PetTheDog treated her well]], as she seemed genuinely saddened by his death.

Added DiffLines:

* RapidHairGrowth: She grew her hair back pretty quickly after taking up Bounty Hunting, if the cover of her forthcoming novel is of any indication.

* BigBadWannabe: He tries really hard to build himself a substantial army and base and become a menace to the Galaxy, but doing so would have caused problems for Sidious, [[BigBad Sidious]], who obviously doesn't waste time to put Maul on his place.

* BodyHorror: When Savage finds him, he looks ''horrible'': His entire lower body has been replaced with a crude, spider-like apparatus, his horns have tripled in length, veins are visible all over his body, and he's lost an unhealthy amount of weight. Even having his new legs fashioned is no less [[NightmareFuel horrific]]; the wires and cables fuse themselves to his spine, then the scrapmetal is heated, with the legs themselves being forged from the molten metal. Judging from Maul's reactions, the procedure was ''very'' painful.

to:

* BloodKnight: He was extremely eager to reveal the survival of the Sith to the Jedi, and if his CombatAestheticist body language is any indication, he ''really'' enjoyed his duel with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. By the time ''The Clone Wars'' rolls around, however, Maul is much more pragmatic, although his bloodthirsty nature still lends itself to an enjoyment of battle.

Judging from Maul's reactions, the procedure was ''very'' painful.

* CombatAestheticist: In ''The Phantom Menace'', Maul's fighting style features a lot of flashy acrobatics and spinning. Averted in ''The Clone Wars'', where he's more straightforward and brutal.

* FauxAffablyEvil: In contrast to Savage, who's more of a brutish thug, he has more sophistication and charisma. However, none of it is real and serves to make alliances. When he does drop the act, he's a snarling monster.

* ItsPersonal: Previously, Maul's hatred for the Jedi was merely because of their ancient feud with the Sith. In ''The Clone Wars'', he specifically hates Obi-Wan with a burning passion, makes a point of targeting him, and even chooses to murder Satine, the woman Obi-Wan has loved for years, just to torture him.

* KickTheSonOfABitch: Killing Pre Vizsla.

to:

* KickTheSonOfABitch: Killing Pre Vizsla. The NoHoldsBarredBeatdown he dished out to the Mandalorian before killing him wasn't exactly undeserved, either.

''The Phantom Menace''.

* {{Pride}}: Subtly so, but this is his FatalFlaw in ''The Phantom Menace''. Once Obi-Wan is left dangling over the pit, Maul arrogantly looms over him, and takes his time waiting for Obi-Wan to fall. Obi-Wan himself uses this time to compose himself, and subsequently leaps right over Maul, who is so shocked by this sudden turn of events that he doesn't rally in time to prevent Obi-Wan from cutting him in half. He's humbler in ''The Clone Wars'', sticking mostly to justified confidence.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: In-universe, Savage Opress was originally "created" by Asajj Ventress and Mother Talzin as an apprentice to overthrow Count Dooku - a role that Darth Sidious feared Asajj would fill, only that she'd kill ''him'' and rule by Dooku's side. On a meta-level, this is subverted; his character originally seemed to be created in order to fill the gap that Darth Maul created, but instead allowed the character to serve as a focal point that would allow for Darth Maul's canonical return - all of which was done by the end of Savage's first arc.

As an infant, Ventress was given over to a slaver to spare the rest of the Nightsister's tribe from a similar fate. After the slaver was killed in a pirate attack, Ventress discovered her strength in the Force and was taken under the wing of Jedi Knight Ky Narec. After Narec was killed, Ventress succumbed to the dark side, eventually becoming an acolyte and loyal assassin to Count Dooku. However, late in the Clone Wars, Darth Sidious, grew concerned by Ventress' growing strength, ordered Dooku to kill her, to which the Count reluctantly complied. Ventress survived the attack, and returned to Dathomir, seeking aid in avenging the Sith Lord's betrayal. After a complex series of events that saw the creation (and rebellion) of the monstrous Savage Opress, Dooku ordered an assault that all but destroyed the Nightsisters, leaving Ventress to fend for herself in the galaxy.
----
* AntiHero: She's evolved into one of these since the destruction of the Nightsisters.
%%* {{Badass}}
* BaldOfEvil: Initially. After leaving the Dooku and the destruction of the Nightsisters, she has been slowly moving towards BaldOfAwesome.
* BaldWoman: Not naturally: flashbacks show she used to have a mohawk. Now she shaves her head.
* TheBaroness: When she was still part of the Separatists serving under Count Dooku before he betrayed her.
* BerserkButton: Insulting or downplaying her skills. Doing so nearly got Luminara killed, and earned [[TheMole Captain Argyus]] a lightsaber through the back.
* BifurcatedWeapon: In TheMovie, her lightsabers could be joined at the hilt to form a [[DoubleWeapon double-bladed]] one. Obi-Wan sliced through the hilt to separate them, and she's never used the technique since.
* BountyHunter: She temporarly joins Boba Fett's group in "Bounty", and becomes a full-time bounty hunter afterwards.
* CatchAndReturn: When she tested the Nightbrother competitors in battle, she caught a spear one of them had thrown at her, then threw it back at him, impaling him on it.
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of Seasons 3-5, she went from being Dooku's somewhat underdeveloped, and psychotic [[TheDragon dragon]], into a tragic and complex character, who can relate to the plight of others, even delivering a WhatTheHellHero to Anakin on Ahsoka's behalf, when the Order abandoned her.
* CleavageWindow: Her first and second outfits.
* TheCoatsAreOff: Seems to do it often, primarily so the animators don't have to deal with making it flow right during a fight.
* CombatPragmatist: Ventress does NOT fight fair, which is part of what makes her such a deadly opponent, as Luminara Unduli almost fatally found out.
* CoolHelmet: Gets one in Season 5, so she can operate in Republic space without being arrested for war crimes.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Savage Opress, whom she used to try to avenge Dooku's betrayal, turned against her after he had enough of her abuse.
* CurbStompBattle:
** In the first episode of the series, Yoda was able to take her lightsabers using the Force, with basically no effort.
** She herself dished one out to the Nightbrother competitors in "Monster". Savage was the only one to come close to matching her.
** After Savage turned against her during their battle against Dooku, she tried to fight her former Master on her own, but she mad no chance. Dooku even warned her, that without the aid of Savage she's no match for him.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Her Nightsister attire included one of these.
%%* DarkActionGirl
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It's shown in a TroubledBackstoryFlashback that Ventress was [[MadeASlave given away to a slaver]] while she was just a toddler. While this alone would be tragic enough, the guy seemed to have been at least decent to her as she seemed quite upset when she found his dead body. Then Ky Narec, who found her, [[ParentalSubstitute raised her]], and taught her to use the Force was killed too.
* DarkMagicalGirl: She fits the description to a t: she fought for the Separatists to gain Dooku's approval, her greatest fear is being left with nothing, and gradually turned away from the Dark Side, after Dooku abandoned her. She even helped Ahsoka in exchange for Ahsoka getting her a full pardon.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has quite a sarcastic streak, which she takes up a few notches in Season 4.
* TheDragon: To Dooku, prior to his betrayal.
* DrowningMySorrows: Following the decimation of the Nightsister, when arriving on Tatooine, Ventress' goes straight to a bar, where she orders a short drink, gulps in down at once, and immediately orders another.
* DualWielding: She uses twin lightsabers.
* EnemyMine: Teams up with Obi-Wan to fight Savage and Darth Maul.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[PetTheDog She returned a girl that had been kidnapped as a bride for a warlord]], though she did insist on being paid for the trouble, first.
%%* EvilAlbino
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Anakin. They both used to be slaves on a remote CrapsackWorld, have been rescued by a Jedi, who were considered somewhat "rogues" by others, and both of them became the apprentices of a Sith Lord. Interesting to note, that while Anakin started slipping closer and closer to the Dark side in Season 4, she seems to have started to work on a HeelFaceTurn at the end of the same season.
** To a lesser extent, she's a counterpart to Ahsoka as well: both of their Masters were Jedi who fell to Dark Side, they both started by using a single green-bladed ligthsaber, and picked up DualWielding later, and finally the way the Jedi Council abandoned Ahsoka under pressure from the Senate, eerily resambles to how Dooku betrayed Ventress on Sidous's order. They have even come to realise that they have had rather similar experiences in Season 5.
* EvilLaugh: Lets out a pretty impressive cackle while fighting Ahsoka and Luminara in "Cloak of Darkness".
* EvilVersusEvil: Her grudge against Count Dooku, as well as her lasting enmity with Savage Opress.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Usually, when she acts polite, it's a façade meant to either mock or deceive.
** AffablyEvil: After abandoning the Separatists, what affability she does show (concern for the other Nightsisters, empathy for Ahsoka) seems to be genuine.
* FreudianExcuse: Given her DarkAndTroubledPast mentioned above, it's really no wonder Dooku was able to turn her to his side so easily.
* HeelFaceTurn: In season 4, although its less of a change in morality and more a choice to stop actively opposing the heroes.
%%* IcyBlueEyes
* InTheHood: Not often, but sometimes.
* KickTheDog: Her treatment of Savage during the Nightsisters trilogy. Having him transformed and brainwashed, forcing him to kill his own brother (who Savage had given himself up to protect), handing him over to Dooku for [[TrainingFromHell Sith training]], and constantly berating him when he proves to be no match for Dooku. After all this, it's really no surprise that Savage wants to kill her.
%%* LaserBlade
* [[LastOfHisKind Last Of Her Kind]]: Of the Nightsisters. Granted, Mother Talzin is still alive, but it's not clear if Ventress is aware of this.
* [[MasterSwordsman Master Swordwoman]]: She's one of the only two characters who managed to best General Grievous in a lightsaber-duel, without resorting to using the Force against him. She was, however, no match for [[AlwaysABiggerFish Count Dooku]] in a straight fight.
%%* MindOverMatter
* MuggedForDisguise: By [[spoiler: Barriss Offee, who steals Ventress' helmet and lightsabers to pose as her while attacking Ahsoka.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After the Nightsisters are destroyed by Grievous's army she completely breaks down, blaming herself for dragging the clan into her quest for vengance.
* NeverMyFault: After their defeat at Dooku's hands, Ventress irritably remarked that she had warned the other Nightsisters of Dooku's power, ignoring that she had been defeated by her former master as well.
** In "Witches of the Mist", she blamed Savage for their combined inability to defeat Dooku, ignoring that she wasn't doing much better against the Count herself.
** In "Massacre", she claims that Savage "rejected [her] guidance". In reality, Savage lashed out at Ventress for her abusive treatment and for continually berating him for his inability to defeat Dooku.
** Averted twice later in the same episode, where she blames herself for not only General Grievous's army coming to Dathomir since it was her quest for vengeance against Dooku that led him to seek retribution, but for the annihilation of the Nightsisters.
* NotSoDifferent: In the season 5 finale, she pursues and captures Ahsoka, who's been framed for sedition, to claim the bounty on her head. However, she comes to sympathize with Ahsoka's plight, knowing all-too well what it feels like to have those you trust turn their backs on you. [[spoiler:When she reveals this to Anakin, he even has to admit, albeit silently, that she's completely right.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: Her own mother handed her over to a slaver (albeit reluctantly) when she was a toddler and her father was most likely killed according to the tradition, just like the father of Savage and Maul.
* PetTheDog: She returns a girl who had been kidnapped as a bride for a warlord to her brother, though Ventress did insist on being paid for her troubles.
* RunOrDie: Twice.
** First after Savage turned against her during their battle against Dooku, she tried to kill her former Master on her own, but ultimately she was forced to abandon the fight.
** During the Battle of Dathomir, she was shot by a droid, and was forced to run to save her life.
* ShesGotLegs: And likes to [[ShowSomeLeg show it]].
** Her Nightsister outfit is a HellBentForLeather ZettaiRyouki.
* SheFu: Her unarmed combat style includes lots of unnecessary acrobatic stunts.
* SpannerInTheWorks: She ruined Darth Maul's first attempt at vengeance on Obi-Wan as well as [[spoiler: Barriss' plot to frame Ahsoka for the temple bombing.]]
* StartOfDarkness: She had a pretty rough life, but the death of her master and [[ParentalSubstitute father figure]], Ky Narec, seems to had been the last drop.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Her first costume.
%%* TattooedCrook
* [[{{Deuteragonist}} Tetragonist]]: She has the most extensive character-arc besides the Anakin-Obi-Wan-Ahsoka trio.
* TookALevelInBadass: In Season 1, Ahsoka and Luminara together were able to match her, and Sidious had no trust in her abilities at all. By Season 3, she's become strong enough to match Obi-Wan and Anakin despite being injured, and for Sidious to consider her a threat.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her quest for vengance against Dooku resulted in unleashing Savage Opress into the Galaxy, which ultimately led to the fall of Satine's pacifist New Mandalorian goverment.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Her TroubledBackstoryFlashback revealed that she was indeed a sweet kid, until her parental figure Ky Narec was murdered.
* VaporWear: Her SexyBacklessOutfit strongly implies this.
* VillainProtagonist: Starting from Season 3 and played up in Season 4, her character was given a lot of focus.
* [[WellDoneSonGuy "Well Done, Apprentice" Girl]]: The main reason for her siding with the Separatists seems to have been her desire to prove herself to Dooku as a worthy apprentice.
* WhipSword: Used a SinisterScythe-on-a-chain during the second test of the Nightbrother "competitors" in "Monster".
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Her first outfit, under the long skirt, which she dismissed when fighting.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]: Her TroubledBackstoryFlashback reveals that she once had a purple mohawk during her teens while training under Ky Narec.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/BarbaraGoodson
->'''Appears in:''' ''WesternAnimation/TheCloneWars''

-->''"Our loyalty is reserved only for each other."''

The leader of the Nightsisters, whose true motives remain obscure.
----
* AffablyEvil[=/=]FauxAffablyEvil: She seems to be genuinely polite to others and caring towards her people, although her inscrutable motives make it impossible to tell which she actually qualifies for.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: She's certainly sinister, but the only time she's actually opposed the heroes was during the events of "The Disappeared", where she had her own cult devoted to harvesting the Living Force from people.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: As we get to see in "Massacre" she is by far the most powerful witch of Nightsisters, as expected from the Clan Mother and shaman.
* CameBackStrong: According to the Expanded Universe, [[DeathByChildBirth she almost died giving birth to her daughter]], but [[NearDeathExperience she "met" the Fanged God and the Winged Godess]] (also known as the Son and the Daughter), and [[ItIsNotYourTime was healed and sent back by them]], that's how she acquired much of her formidable powers.
* TheChessmaster: She effortlessly sets various individuals and groups against each other throughout the Nightsisters trilogy. [[spoiler: In ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'', she's practically competing with fellow chessmaster Darth Sidious to see who can OutGambit the other.]]
* ColdBloodedTorture: Inflicted on Count Dooku through the use of a VoodooDoll.
* CoolSword: Wields one forged from the ether during her duel with Mace Windu.
* CrypticBackgroundReference: Apparently she and Dooku have a history with eachother, but the only things revealed are that Dooku had helped Talzin once, and apparently gave a lock of his hair to her as part of some sort of deal.
* CrystalBall: Has one, which she used to track down Savage at Obi-Wan's request. She also used it to find Maul. She also tried to use another one for taking harvested life-forces.
* DeflectorShields: Used a magical version during the Battle of Dathomir.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Her normal voice is accompanied by an [[VoiceOfTheLegion almost demonic reverberation]].
* EvilVersusEvil: She aids Ventress in her battles with Dooku.
%%* FacialMarkings
%%* FemmeFatalons
* HiddenAgendaVillain: She seems to have ''some'' kind of agenda, but exactly what it might be remains unknown.
* [[IntangibleMan Intangible Woman]]: She escaped Grievous and his droids by turning into green mist.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When her plan to take Queen Julia's life-force was thwarted, she fled the scene rather than continue her duel with Mace Windu.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: She wears a rather elaborate dress, her motivations and goals remained a secret, and while she's also [[ShockAndAwe able conjure green force lightning]], or use magical {{Deflector Shield}}s, she mainly uses more "subtle" techniques, such as transforming Savage Opress into a hulking, nigh-unstoppable avatar of primal anger, and torturing Count Dooku from millions of lightyears away with a VoodooDoll. She also posesses VoiceOfTheLegion.
* LargeAndInCharge: She towers over all the other Nightsisters by a head at least. That includes Ventress, who's 6 feet 2 tall. In fact, she's barely shorter than Savage after his transformation.
* LargeHam: She has her moments and her VoiceOfTheLegion only serves to aid her hamminess. After all, she is voiced by the [[Creator/BarbaraGoodson same woman]] who played [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Rita Repulsa]] and [[{{Franchise/Disgaea}} Laharl]], although Talzin's rather subdued compared to those two.
* MagicKnight: In addition to her magic and witchcraft, she's also really skilled with a blade.
* {{Magitek}}: She used her magics to create Maul's cybernetic legs.
* MamaBear: In addition to being very protective of her clan, the third issue of ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'' reveals that she is not very happy with Darth Sidious for [[spoiler: taking away her son, Darth Maul, and then leaving him to die]].
%%* [[ManipulativeBastard Manipulative Bitch]]
* TheReveal: Issue 3 of ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'' reveals that [[spoiler: she is Darth Maul's (and by extension, Savage Opress's and Feral's) biological mother]].
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Her sadistic ColdBloodedTorture of Count Dooku in retaliation for his genocide against the Nightsisters.
* ShockAndAwe: She can conjure green Force-lightning.
* SquishyWizard: As mentioned above, she is really powerful, but prefers to focus on supporting her sisters through her magic. Most notably, she tortures Dooku with a voodoo doll, threatening to destroy him if he does not withdraw his forces. But when Grievous interrupts, she turns intangible and escapes.
* TheSvengali: It's not quite clear why she helped Ventress, but the fact she aided Savage as well makes it clear, that she wasn't acting out of the goodness of her heart.
* TokenWholesome: Compared to the other Nightsisters.
* VillainTeleportation: Uses this to escape Grievous in Massacre and flee the scene after her plan with the Frangawl cult was foiled.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Speaks with a [[EvilSoundsDeep deep]], creepy, demonic echo.
* VoodooDoll: Used one to [[ColdBloodedTorture torture Dooku]] during the Battle Of Dathomir.

The oldest and wisest of the Nightsisters, according to Talzin.
----
* CrystalBall: Like Talzin, has one, which she uses in her spell to summon the undead.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has the same reverberation to her voice as Talzin.
* EvilVersusEvil: She raised an undead army to help the Nightsisters fight Grievous and his droids.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Grievous runs her through with a lightsaber.
* {{Necromancer}}: She can summon an [[ArmyOfTheDead army of Nightsister zombies]], and is apparently the only one possessing the ability.
* NoOntologicalInertia: Her zombies can only stay "alive" for as long as she maintains the spell. The instant she's killed, they drop like flies. [[KillEmAll Then the droids kill the rest of the clan.]]
* SupervillainLair: Has a hidden cave near the back of the Nightsisters' fortress, which can only be opened by magic. The droids just [[DungeonBypass blow down the wall]] with a rocket launcher.
* SquishyWizard: Again, like Talzin, she is extremely powerful magic-wise but utterly helpless once Grievous barges into her lair. She can only flail briefly before he stabs her.

-->''"Revenge! I must have revenge!"''

Darth Sidious' first Sith apprentice, a Dathomirian Zabrak warrior who is skilled with a double-bladed lightsaber. Although seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Naboo, his hatred for the young Jedi proves strong enough for him to survive his injuries and seek vengeance against Kenobi throughout the Clone Wars.
----
%%* AbusiveParents
* AintTooProudToBeg: He pleads for mercy after Sidious [[spoiler:kills Savage]] and defeats him, and gets the following response:
-->'''Darth Maul:''' Please! Have mercy! ''Please''!\\
'''Darth Sidious:''' There ''is'' no mercy. ''[[[ElectricTorture blasts Maul with lightning]]]''
* AntiVillain: [[DefiedTrope Defied]] it in "The Lawless", when Obi-Wan, believing him to be a [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type II]], attempts to [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath appeal to Maul's inner good]] by claiming that he understands him as having no choice in joining the dark side. Maul responds by demonstrating how wrong Obi-Wan is in that same scene when he [[RevengeByProxy kills Satine]], and watches gleefully as Obi-Wan sinks into a HeroicBSOD.
%%* ArchEnemy: To Obi-Wan.
* ArtificialLimbs: He first gains a crude, spider-like apparatus to replace his lower body; then a pair of sleeker, four-toed legs; and finally a set of more human-like legs.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: After he defeats and kills Vizsla, the Death Watch (save for Bo-Katan and the Night Owls) immediately accepts Maul as their new leader.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Anyone who wields a double-bladed lightsaber without cutting themselves in half, let alone at all, is either a [[NewMeat Sith wannabe loonie with zero experience]] or a top-tier actual {{Badass}}. Unfortunately for the heroes, Maul is a {{Badass}}.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: All Sith Lords come with this, and "Darth Maul" is no exception.
* AxCrazy: Maul was always a BloodKnight, but since his return, he's seemingly become so bloodthirsty that he's willing to butcher dozens of innocent people just to get Obi-Wan's attention.
%%* Badass
* BadassBoast: Gives a terrifying one in his message to Obi-Wan in "Revenge".
--> '''Darth Maul''': There will be more innocent blood on your hands, Kenobi, unless you face me. Come alone. If you do not, this world... ''([[OffWithHisHead decapitates a group of hostages in one swing]])'' will '''''burn'''''.
** Delivers one in "Eminence".
--->'''Darth Maul''': Our [[BigBadDuumvirate combined]] [[VillainTeamUp strength]] will be rewarded. Mandalore will be yours, and [[ArchEnemy Kenobi]], this Sith pretender Dooku, and ''all'' our enemies... will ''fall''.
* BadassInCharge: Of the criminal army he assembled in "Eminence". In "Shades of Reason", he becomes one to the Death Watch, and essentially all of Mandalore as well, after he kills Pre Vizsla.
* BaldOfEvil: With a crown of spikes atop his head to boot.
* BastardUnderstudy: All Sith apprentices are this by definition. Given his loyalty to Sidious, it's fair to say that Maul has more the "understudy" than the "bastard" in him.
* BestServedCold: When Obi-Wan escapes from him, he realizes that after waiting a decade for vengeance, he really can afford to wait a bit longer. According to both SamWitwer and [[WordOfGod Dave Filoni]], he also realized that merely torturing Obi-Wan to death isn't nearly satisfying enough.
* BigBadDuumvirate: He and Pre Vizsla form one in "Eminence", although [[TheStarscream he intended to overthrow him from the start]]. In "Shades of Reason", Maul kills Vizsla and usurps his command of Death Watch.
* BigBadWannabe: He tries really hard to build himself a substantial army and base and become a menace to the Galaxy, but doing so would have caused problems for Sidious, who obviously doesn't waste time to put Maul on his place.
* BigBrotherMentor: He teaches his brother Savage Opress, and often refers to him as only "apprentice". In "The Lawless", however, he's shown to have [[BigBrotherInstinct cared somewhat about him]] when Sidious kills him.
* BlackCloak: A staple for any Sith Lord, which he [[TheCoatsAreOff removes]] for his final battle with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.
* BlatantLies: When Sidious shows up at his doorstep he tries to pretend that he's still loyal to him, but [[ThatLiarLies Sidious sees right through it]].
* BrainsAndBrawn: The brains to Savage's brawn, though he's more than capable of handling himself in a fight.
* BreakTheBadass: He's ''terrified'' when he realizes that Sidious has arrived in "The Lawless".
* TheBrute: Unlike Sidious' other apprentices, Maul was raised as little more than a blunt instrument for his master.
* ChallengingTheChief: He challenges Vizsla to decide who shall lead Death Watch and Mandalore. Maul wins.
%%* TheChessmaster: He begins showing skill in this department in "Eminence", and makes an even better showing in "Shades of Reason".
* ChewingTheScenery[=/=]EvilIsHammy: In ''The Clone Wars'', particularly before he is healed, in contrast to his appearance in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace''.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: A very dark version of this trope; when Savage finds him in "Brothers", Maul is ranting incoherently, randomly spouting bits of Sith philosophy and even speaking as if Sidious were present.
* CombatPragmatist: He brings back-up in the form of Savage in his confrontation with Obi-Wan on Raydonia, and is more than willing to fight dirty to defeat the equally pragmatic Vizsla.
* ContinuityNod: His design (elongated horns, shirtless, circlet around the neck, cybernetic lower body) seems to be a homage to his appearance in the non-canon comic "Old Wounds". Once he switches to his second pair of cybernetic legs, he actually becomes nearly ''identical'' to that design: only his horns were returned to their normal length.
** Also, the way he draws his lightsaber just before the Raydonia massacre is just like when Anakin slaughters younglings in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith''.
* {{Cyborg}}: He gains cybernetic replacements for his lost legs.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Maul takes an entire village hostage and demands that Obi-Wan come to face him alone or he would kill the villagers, using Obi-Wan's Jedi sensibilities to ensure that he would agree to Maul's terms. Not only are the villagers all dead by the time Obi-Wan arrives (preventing Obi-Wan from rescuing anyone), but Maul brings back-up, having Savage ambush Obi-Wan, taking him down before he had a chance to properly defend himself. They then take him off-planet, preventing any possibility of Obi-Wan escaping. If [[SpannerInTheWorks Ventress]] hadn't intervened, Maul would have had his vengeance right then and there.
** His plan in "Shades of Reason" also qualifies: Maul knew perfectly well that Vizsla would betray him, and uses that as part of his own plot to conquer Mandalore, as well as taking advantage of Vizsla's sense of warrior pride to both eliminate Vizsla and gain the willing support of Death Watch.
** In "The Lawless", Maul allows Satine to send a message to Obi-Wan, knowing that Obi-Wan would come to rescue the woman he loves, and that Mandalore's neutrality would force Obi-Wan to come alone, making it a simple matter to capture both him and Satine and take his revenge.
* DarkIsEvil: He explicitly speaks of the power of the dark side during his confrontation with Obi-Wan in "The Lawless".
* DarthVaderClone: The first of the prequel trilogy's three "proto-Vaders", an utterly remorseless [[TheHeavy Heavy]] who kills the film's mentor figure and enforces Darth Sidious' will.
* DeadpanSnarker: He gets a good one in while interrogating Oruba the Hutt, which serves to make him more menacing.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' So the only thing you can tell me is that I will find Jabba... [[CaptainObvious at Jabba's palace]]?
** Also while talking with Satine:
--->'''Maul:''' Where are the other leaders of your people?\\
'''Satine:''' You should already know. They either sided with Vizsla or have been killed. There's no one left but Almec and I, but he's as corrupt and vile as you are.\\
'''Maul:''' [[InsultBackfire Really? Thank you]] for being so cooperative.
%%* DeathGlare: He's very good at this.
* DiabolicalMastermind: He attempts to become one in Season 5 of ''The Clone Wars'', even referring to himself and Savage as "crime lords". Maul's first attempt to build a criminal enterprise blows up in his face (partly because Hondo's much nicer to his men than most criminals), but with the assistance of Pre Vizsla and Death Watch, Maul manages to co-opt the Black Suns and the Hutt Cartel, as well as recruit the Pyke family (a group of spice dealers), forming them into a criminal empire. Even after Sidious captures him and imprisons him on Stygeon, the Shadow Collective continues to remain loyal to Maul (with the exception of the Hutt Cartel, which deserted) and busts him out. However, it partially falls apart when General Grievous leads an army to Zanbar, annihilates the base there and forces Maul retreat. The [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Mandalorian]] members are willing to fight to the end during the Battle of Ord Mantell while the Black Sun and Pykes are a little more reluctant.
* DisneyVillainDeath: He falls down a deep shaft after Obi-Wan [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe cuts him in half]]. Surprisingly, he manages to live through that.
* DoubleWeapon: His WeaponOfChoice in ''The Phantom Menace'' is a double-bladed lightsaber. After resurfacing, he uses only the remaining half of his weapon.
* TheDragon: Darth Sidious' first in the saga (chronologically).
* TheDreaded: Subverted; Maul's been out of the game so long (and the Sith are so obscure besides) that most people don't know enough to fear him, although [[TheSociopath Maul]] is more than happy to ''give'' people reasons to fear him.
* DualWielding: He briefly uses his lightsaber and Pre Vizsla's darksaber in tandem during his fight with Sidious.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He is genuinely crushed by his brother's death in "The Lawless".
* EvilCounterpart: To Anakin Skywalker (pre-FaceHeelTurn): both were slaves as children and then passed down to be taught the ways of the Force; both are incredibly skilled and powerful at a young age; both form master-apprentice and brotherly relationships with another (Obi-Wan with Anakin and Savage with Maul); both were nearly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi and restored to life using machinery; and finally, both are cast aside by Palpatine/Darth Sidious in favor of another potential apprentice (Maul for Anakin, and Anakin for Luke).
%%* EvilerThanThou: Towards Vizsla. Later Sidious turned it on him.
%%* EvilMentor: For Savage.
* EvilOverlord: Becomes one after conquering Mandalore.
* EvilSoundsDeep: During the few instances where he actually speaks in ''The Phantom Menace''. In this case, it was actually [[SameLanguageDub dubbed over]] the actor's normal "squeaky" voice to make him sound more threatening.
* EvilVersusEvil:
** In "Shades of Reason" he kills Pre Vizsla in a duel, and takes his place as leader of Death Watch.
** In "The Lawless" Sidious confronts him and Savage in a duel.
** In the first and second issues of "Son of Dathomir" he briefly crosses swords with General Grievous.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: In "Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir", Dooku confronted Maul in prison. Maul told him that he had heard much of the Jedi traitor, and he was expecting more from him.
* FauxAffablyEvil: In contrast to Savage, who's more of a brutish thug, he has more sophistication and charisma. However, none of it is real and serves to make alliances. When he does drop the act, he's a snarling monster.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: After being restored, Savage had to bring him up to speed on recent events since he spent the last 11+ years isolated on a junkyard world going insane.
* FlatCharacter: His two defining traits are his devotion to his master and his hatred of the Jedi Order. This gets fixed in ''The Clone Wars''.
* {{Foil}}[=/=]NotSoDifferent[=/=]ShadowArchetype: A skilled warrior and tactician with a dry sense of humour and a brotherly relationship with his apprentice, who lost something important to him at the Battle of Theed, who aids a Mandalorian in trying to build Mandalore to their ideal, and is devoted to their own chosen ideology. Now, does that description fit Darth Maul or [[ArchEnemy Obi-Wan]]?
%%* GeniusBruiser
* GottaGetYourHeadTogether: No external attack involved, but when Savage found him, he was often clutching his temples. Since he was insane at the time, it's a visual for him trying to "hold on" to what little was left of his mind.
* HandicappedBadass: Even with his mechanical legs, he's quite a capable fighter, even incorporating some of his classic acrobatic moves.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Obi-Wan cuts him clean through his waist, complete with DisneyVillainDeath. After Savage found him, Mother Talzin fashioned him new cybernetic legs. Both Obi-Wan and Ventress cracked jokes about it.
* HeroicSecondWind: "Heroic" definitely doesn't apply, but after Sidious [[spoiler:killed Savage]], and mocked him about being replaced as the Sith apprentice, Maul went toe-to-toe with his former Master in the remainder of their ligthsaber duel, [[SubvertedTrope but was ultimately defeated]].
* HesBack: Takes a while for him to regain his composure, though.
* HeroKiller: He kills Qui-Gon in ''The Phantom Menace'', who was the series protagonist [[DecoyProtagonist up until then]].
* HornedHumanoid: As a Zabrak, he has a "crown" of horns atop his head.
* ImAHumanitarian: It's not confirmed, but implied that he may have resorted to sapient cannibalism during his state of insanity on Lotho Minor if his relationship with Morley is anything to go by, with Morley feeding on the leftovers.
* ImplacableMan: He doesn't stop hunting the Jedi until Obi-Wan cuts him in half. Even that isn't enough to put him down for good.
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: In addition to his double-bladed lightsaber, he helps himself to Pre Vizsla's Darksaber after killing him.
* InTheHood: Up until his final confrontation with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, when he removes the hood to reveal his spiked head.
* KickTheDog: In "Revenge", throwing his murder of Qui-Gon in Obi-Wan's face just to provoke him.
** In "The Lawless", killing Satine to torment Obi-Wan. Two dogs, one kick.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: Killing Pre Vizsla.
* KnightOfCerebus: A third for ''The Clone Wars'' series, following Cad Bane and Savage. When Maul shows up, things get ''dark'' ([[WouldHurtAChild he callously slaughtered innocent children, for instance]]).
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: In "Revival", after Savage lost an arm and the pirates turned on them, Maul wisely decided to just take his brother and leave.
** In the first issue of ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'', he and the Shadow Collective were forced to retreat from Zanbar after General Grievous led an army to destroy the Shadow Collective base there. It's all part of Dooku and Sidious's plan to lure out Mother Talzin. Ironically, he and Talzin are trying to do the exact same thing with Sidious.
* KungFuWizard: He's one of the more physical lightsaber duelists of the saga, rarely using his Force powers at all in a fight.
* LaughingMad: After ''The Phantom Menace''. He gets better, though.
%%* LightningBruiser
* MachiavelliWasWrong: While he offered them money as well, he mainly used intimidation to get Hondo's men to join him. All it took for the pirates to turn against him was Hondo's forgiveness and Obi-Wan forcing Maul and Savage to retreat.
* {{Magitek}}: The cybernetic legs Mother Talzin created for him. Also according to both WordOfGod and [[AllThereInTheManual The Sith Hunters tie-in comicbook]], Maul used the Force to create the crude spider-like apparatus he was first seen with in the series.
%%* ManipulativeBastard
* MasterSwordsman: His fighting style focuses on swordsmanship over Force powers, making him one of the most skilled combatants in the franchise at a cost of raw power. He even manges to hold his own against Darth Sidious for a bit.
* MeaningfulName: "[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Maul]]" means both "to maim or mutilate" and "an extremely heavy hammer used as a weapon".
* MindOverMatter: Once he was shown dragging a several ton Theta-class shuttle across a plateau using the Force alone.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Unlike most Sith apprentices, who usually seem to just put up with their masters until they can finally betray them, Darth Maul is completely loyal to Darth Sidious. Once he regains his sanity and discovers that Darth Sidious replaced him with Dooku and never bothered to see if he was alive, he quickly loses any loyalty he once had to him.
* NeckLift: He's proficient in Force Choke, using it several times in "Eminence" alone.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: He and Savage inflict a brutal one to Obi-Wan in "Revenge".
** Maul himself later delivers one to Vizsla at the end of their duel in "Shades of Reason", which included the Sith Lord breaking Viszla's arm.
** He finds himself on the receiving end of one at the hands of Darth Sidious after losing their duel on Mandalore.
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: What was initially believed about his "death" on Naboo. Subverted later, when he and Savage seemingly go down with their ship, Obi-Wan is convinced he lived, citing the fact that he cut Maul in half before, and ''that'' failed to kill him.
* NotQuiteDead: Obi-Wan bisected him at the waist, but it didn't keep Maul down.
* NotSoAboveItAll: After Sidious [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomps]] him, he begs for his life.
* NotSoDifferent: He loses [[spoiler: his brother Savage]] in a similar manner to how his rival [[spoiler: Obi-Wan lost Qui-Gon]].
* ObviouslyEvil: If the black robes and red lightsaber didn't give him away to Qui-Gon as a Sith...
* OhCrap: His reaction when he recognized Sidious's presence on Mandalore.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' Hmm, I sense a presence. A presence... I haven't... felt since... *gasps* Master!
* OffWithHisHead: Does this to several people at once in one swing in "Revenge".
** In "Shades of Reason", he uses this as the method of executing Pre Vizsla.
* ParentalAbandonment: "Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir" (the official continuation of Maul's arc in the TV-series), states that Maul was a gift to Sidious from Mother Talzin as a prepubescent child, The fact that Talzin could just hand him over the Sidious implies that his parents didn't care for him. But if Talzin is to be believed, [[spoiler: she is Maul's mother, Sidious is a liar, and he stole Maul from her]].
* ThePowerOfHate: He survived his bifurcation due to his raw hatred for Obi-Wan, and this is the ''only'' thing keeping him alive. This is also [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]] in that said [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity hatred also drove him insane]] over the course of 11 years and it wasn't until he was brought to Mother Talzin that his sanity was restored.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' My hatred kept my spirit intact, even though my body was not.
* PragmaticVillainy: In season 5 of ''The Clone Wars'', he realizes that he and Savage can't just run around killing and looting to survive because it would draw the Jedi to them.
** In "Eminence", he decides against killing the fleeing Sugi, Embo, Latts and Dengar, as they are merely bounty hunters, who have no loyalty to the Hutts (whom Maul and his allies were attacking at the time). [[WordOfSaintPaul Sam Witwer]] also speculated that Maul might have foreseen some possible use for them in the future, adding to Maul's pragmatism.
* PsychoticSmirk: Quite often, especially in "The Lawless"
* PsychopathicManchild: Shows some signs of this before being healed, hiding behind boxes and being lured out when he follows a light conjured by Mother Talzin in an almost childlike state of fascination.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: The poster boy: he dresses in [[BlackCloak black Sith robes]], has black and red [[TatooedCrook tattoos]] all over his body, his eyes are [[SupernaturalGoldEyes gold]] and [[RedEyesTakeWarning red]], and he wields a red double-bladed lightsaber. The Death Watch soldiers loyal to him follow suit, painting their armor to match Maul's coloring.
* RedemptionRejection: Obi-Wan tried to appeal to his inner good, claiming to understand that he didn't choose the Dark Side out of his own will. He gleefully refused the offered chance, by murdering Satine.
* {{Revenge}}: Seeks revenge on Obi-Wan for defeating him on Naboo.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' I was apprenticed to the most powerful being in the galaxy once. I was destined to be... so much more. But I was robbed of that destiny by the Jedi. By ''Obi-Wan Kenobi''...
* RevengeBeforeReason: Surprisingly, averted. Despite spending twelve years in a state of insanity on a trash-filled, flaming hellhole of a world, Maul is very smart in how he pursues his vengeance on Obi-Wan, and makes a point of working on some of his other goals, rather than pursuing revenge at the exclusion of all else.
* RevengeByProxy: He murdered Satine for the sake of making Obi-Wan suffer.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' I never planned on killing you, but [[BestServedCold I will make you]] ''[[BestServedCold share]]'' [[BestServedCold my pain]], Kenobi.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: During his first attempt to take vengeance on Obi-Wan he slaughtered [[BusFullOfInnocents an entire village]] just to draw the Jedi out.
* SanitySlippage: Played straight and inverted. He was downright animalistic when Savage finally found him. He only managed to hold on to a semblance of clarity once he focused on getting revenge. Being cut in half will do that to you. After Mother Talzin's healed his psychosis, he regains more and more of his sanity and cunning with each subsequent appearance, to the point of becoming a [[TheChessmaster chessmaster]] in his own right.
* SatanicArchetype: In appearance only, with the red skin and horns.
* SeparatedAtBirth: Maul and Savage were both infants when their mother gave Maul to Sidious. ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'' later reveals that [[spoiler: Maul wasn't given to Sidious willingly]].
* ShadowDictator: After conquering Mandalore, he made Almec the public face of his rule, so he can remain in the shadows.
* SiblingTeam: With Savage Opress.
* SilentAntagonist: During ''The Phantom Menace''. He rarely speaks, and when he does, it's only ever to his master. Averted in ''The Clone Wars'', where he becomes a lot more talkative.
* SlouchOfVillainy: While sitting on his new throne at the end of "Shades of Reason".
* TheSociopath: LackOfEmpathy? He's either killed, tried to kill, or would be willing to kill almost everyone he's come across in the series. Consummate deception skills? He managed to con Pre Vizsla into an alliance, and it was Maul's plan that convinced Mandalore that the Death Watch were heroes and liberators. Superficial charm and persuasion? He manipulated Vizsla, Almec, and legions of criminals into serving him. Troubling childhood? He was "[[TrainingFromHell raised]]" by Darth Sidious. Maul is a high-functioning example, but he fits all the criteria of a sociopath.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Occasionally slips into this, with the emphasis on "sadist."
* SpikesOfVillainy: A similar style is adopted by [[EliteMook higher-ranking members]] of Maul's Death Watch.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: They signify his allegiance to the Dark Side.
* TheStarscream: To Pre Vizlsa. He succeeds quite spectacularly. A rare case where both halves of a BigBadDuumvirate qualify as TheStarscream.
* TalkativeLoon: Until he was healed. Even afterwards, he's a lot more talkative than he was in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' and still pretty [[AxCrazy crazy]].
* TattooedCrook: The black markings on his face are tattoos, with the red being his natural skin color.
* TookALevelInBadass: In ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'', Maul was a purely physical opponent. In ''The Clone Wars'', however, he's become a DangerouslyGenreSavvy ManipulativeBastard and a skilled [[TheChessmaster chessmaster]] in his own right, while remaining a deadly physical combatant.
* {{Tykebomb}}: Sidious raised him from infancy to be a remorseless assassin.
* TheUnfettered: A given for a Sith Lord, but he takes it to whole new levels. Maul refused to allow ''a fatal injury'' to get in the way of his survival and obsession with Obi-Wan.
-->'''Darth Maul:''' You cannot imagine the depths I would go to to stay alive, fueled by my singular hatred for ''you''.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: For all his [[EnsembleDarkhorse popularity]], Maul does precisely one thing in the whole film saga: kill Qui-Gon Jinn. Except that by doing so, he ensures Anakin is taught by a newly-knighted Jedi instead of a wise Master with decades of teaching experience, which plays a huge role in his frustration in the Jedi Order and inability to deal with his phenomenal powers, which in turn plays a huge role in his FaceHeelTurn.
* VillainTeamUp: With the Mandalorian Death Watch, Black Sun, and the Hutts in Season 5, telling the former that he and his brother can help them reclaim Mandalore.
** As of the third issue of "Son of Dathomir", he seems to have done another one with [[spoiler:Count Dooku]].
* VillainousBreakdown: He's reduced to begging for his life after being curb-stomped by Sidious.
* VisionaryVillain: Using a criminal empire to expand his influence over the galaxy, as well as getting revenge against Obi-Wan and Darth Sidious. He even makes repeated mentions of his "vision" in his interactions with Savage and Pre Vizsla.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: A few times in ''The Clone Wars'', notably his season 4 appearances, as well as the season 5 premiere.
** And even when he ''gets'' a shirt, it ''still'' leaves about a six inch strip bare from neck to belt.
* WeaponOfChoice: A red [[DoubleWeapon double-bladed]] lightsaber.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Emphasis on "destroyer of worlds". While Maul was always a villain, it was his defeat at Obi-Wan's hand and the subsequent twelve years of near-total insanity that turned him into a vengeance-obsessed, AxCrazy psychopath, willing to brutally murder dozens, maybe hundreds of innocent people to get a chance at killing Obi-Wan. [[spoiler: Sidious also forcefully took him away from his mother, Talzin.]]
* WeCanRebuildHim: Mother Talzin crafted him new legs with her magic.
* WouldHitAGirl: Proven when he almost kills Sugi in "Eminence".
** Also, in the same episode earlier, he Force Chokes and nearly kills Bo-Katan to make a point to Pre Vizla about doubt leading to failure when she expresses doubts about allying with Sith Lords.
** And finally, in "The Lawless", he murders Satine just to torment Obi-Wan.
* WouldHurtAChild: Butchered numerous young children to attract the attention of the Jedi.

[[folder:Savage Opress]]
!!Savage Opress
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/savage_opress_sw_713.jpg]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ClancyBrown
->'''Appears in:''' ''WesternAnimation/TheCloneWars''

Savage Opress was once a common Nightbrother whose fighting prowess impressed Asajj Ventress. Transformed into a monstrous warrior by Mother Talzin, Opress became Count Dooku's new assassin and secret Sith apprentice. His loyalty, however, remained to Talzin. The Nightsisters' leader gave Savage a new quest: to find his brother, Darth Maul, who had somehow survived his apparent death and was living in exile in the Outer Rim.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: Savage pleads for forgiveness after failing to deliver King Katuunko to Dooku alive. Unfortunately for Savage...
-->'''Dooku''': That is not the way of the dark side. [''[[ElectricTorture blasts Savage with Force lightning]]'']
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:He and his brother were ruthless, but it's hard to not feel sorry for them when Sidious waltzes in and {{Curb Stomp| Battle}}s all their hard work and their lives into oblivion]].
* AlienBlood: Whenever he's injured, he "bleeds" the Force magic that the Nightsisters used to enhance him. [[spoiler:When he's killed, it bleeds out entirely]].
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Because of the Nightsisters' magic mutating his body and mind, it's unclear as to whether any of the evil acts Savage committed were done of his own volition, or if they were a result of the brainwashing. [[spoiler:His final scene only adds to this ambiguity; he seemingly reverts to his former personality as he dies]].
* AnArmAndALeg: Gets his left arm chopped off by Obi-Wan in "Revival".
* AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type I/Type II]]. Savage didn't choose to be evil and most of his evil acts were undertaken while he was brainwashed, leaving the degree of control he had over his actions ambiguous. Even the moral of his debut episode lampshades this particular quality:
--> "Evil is not born. It is taught."
* ArmorIsUseless: Downplayed. His ancient-looking armor is no match for a lightsaber, but it works well enough against blaster fire.
* ArtificialLimbs: Death Watch's medical droids build him a mechanical replacement for his severed left arm in "Eminence".
* AuthorAppeal: It's possible that his skin color scheme is a nod to Dave Filoni's favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
* {{Badass}}: Despite a lack of training, he managed to hold his own against both Anakin and Obi-Wan at the same time, and shortly afterward, destroyed at least a dozen battle droids with a single Force wave, ''after'' being repeatedly hit by blaster bolts.
* BadassBaritone: Creator/ClancyBrown at work.
* BastardUnderstudy: Initially apprenticed to Dooku, following his betrayal he finds a new master in his brother, Maul.
* TheBerserker: His lightsaber technique consists mainly of brutish hacking and slashing. Under Maul's tutelage, he starts to learn more finesse, but never really abandons his monstrous fighting style.
%%* BlackKnight
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Feral and later Maul. When he found Maul crippled and insane, and being exploited by one of the natives, he was ''very'' upset by his condition.
* BodyHorror: During Savage's transformation, you can hear his bones cracking as they expand and his horns visibly extend from his skull.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: Dooku trains Savage in lightsaber combat and in usage of the dark side of the Force. His brother has been continuing his training.
%%* BrainwashedAndCrazy
* BrainsAndBrawn: The brawn to Darth Maul's brains.
* CurbStompBattle: His opponents often find themselves on the receiving end of this:
** In his debut episode, he took down two Jedi and their clone troopers without a scratch.
** In "Witches of The Mist", he tore through King Katuunko's bodyguards, killed Katuunko, and easily shook off Anakin and Obi-Wan during their first attempt to stop him. However, he found himself on the receiving end of one both times he fought against Dooku (the first time was in a training duel).
** In "Brothers", the Junkers learned the hard way how powerful he was.
** In "Revenge", he effortlessly knocked out Obi-Wan with Maul only watching.
** In "Revival", [[spoiler:Adi Gallia]] was quickly put on the defensive and her kicks didn't even phase him.
** In "The Lawless" [[spoiler: however, Darth Sidious effortlessly took him down.]]
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: In "Shades of Reason", he foresaw that Vizsla was planning to betray him [[spoiler:and Maul]], and he also guessed his brother's plan to replace Vizsla when it comes to that, with someone motivated by greed.
** After experiencing Dooku's Force lightning firsthand, Savage's first reply is to ask how he could defend against such an attack. Being quite GenreSavvy himself, Dooku refuses to tell him.
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: He used to have a BigBrotherInstinct towards Feral, but after being corrupted by the Nightsister magicks, he killed his brother without a second thought.
** Another example in "Eminence": he dismisses the concept of honor as a "weakness" and yet he himself was once a very honorable person.
* DarthVaderClone: A once noble warrior who is corrupted and twisted physically and mentally, but who willingly submits to the corruption to protect a loved one, only to kill said loved one due to their being twisted by the dark side, losing an arm to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and subsequently serving as TheDragon to a powerful Sith Lord. Their appearances and demeanors are even quite similar: powerfully built, extremely strong, dressed in black armor, typically stoic, yet short-tempered, and having a deep, intimidating voice. Finally, much like Vader, Savage [[spoiler:reverts to his pre-dark side self as he is dying]].
* {{Determinator}}: He's half-dead before he finally runs from a losing fight in "Witches of the Mist".
* TheDogBitesBack: He pays back Dooku and Ventress for their abuse and torture by throttling them both. Had they not escaped, he would have done a lot more.
* DoubleWeapon: Wields a double-bladed lightsaber.
* TheDragon: Briefly to Dooku, and even more briefly to Ventress, before settling with Darth Maul after finding him. He isn't too happy about it at first, wanting them to be a BigBadDuumvirate, but accepts this role when he proves to be the weaker of the duo.
* TheDreaded: Not overly so, but the Jedi and Dooku both recognize Savage as an extremely dangerous menace.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Even before his transformation, he came close to matching Ventress blow-for-blow, but following his transformation by the Nightsisters, he takes down a Jedi Knight, a Padawan, and their clone army without breaking a sweat.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Subverted between him and Feral, since Savage was actually good back when Feral was alive. His relationship with his brother Maul is this though.
* EvilIsBigger: The Nightsisters' ritual changes him from a normal-sized man into a hulking, seven-foot tall monster.
* EvilMakeover: One of the more extreme cases: the Nightsisters' ritual causes Savage to get much bigger physically, elongates his horns, and gives him inhuman strength.
* EvilSoundsDeep: His voice gets deeper following his transformation. It helps that he's voiced by Creator/ClancyBrown.
* EvilVersusEvil: With his enmity towards Ventress, battle with Dooku, and involvement in [[spoiler:Maul's conflict with Darth Sidious and the Death Watch]], as well as his conflicts with Black Sun and the Hutts, Savage spends more time fighting other villains than he does fighting the heroes.
* {{Expy}}: To Darth Maul both in and out of universe. At one point Obi-Wan even mistook him for Maul. They are, in fact, brothers.
** Finally, [[WordOfGod Katie Lucas herself]] has compared Savage to [[Literature/{{Frankenstein}} Frankenstein's Monster]].
* FamilyThemeNaming[=/=][[spoiler:ThemeTwinNaming]]: Savage and Feral, and Opress and Maul respectively.
* GutturalGrowler: Not as extreme as some examples of this trope, but it's definitely present.
* HairTriggerTemper: He's not usually very emotive, but Savage is easily provoked to violence.
* HandicappedBadass: He's no less {{Badass}} after losing an arm than he was before.
* HeroKiller: He killed two Jedi in his debut episode (with [[CurbStompBattle ease]], no less) and, in "Revival", [[spoiler:Jedi Master and Council member Adi Gallia, a Jedi Master and member of the High Council]].
%%* HiddenDepths: As the entries under "DangerouslyGenreSavvy" show, Savage is quite a bit smarter than he looks.
* HornedHumanoid: Deserves special mention for weaponizing them in battle.
* IfYoureSoEvilEatThisKitten: His last test of brainwashed loyalty is to kill his brother. He hesitates, but ultimately obeys.
* InstantExpert: Might be a side-effect of the Nightsisters' magic that transformed him, but he's a frighteningly quick learner given that with only the first levels of his training complete, he is able to fight Obi-Wan and Anakin on equal footing and Force-choke Ventress and Dooku simultaneously.
* ItIsDehumanizing: While no one calls him "it", nearly every character who refers to Savage calls him a "creature" or a "monster", rather than referring to him as a person.
* ItIsPronouncedTroPay: His first name is pronounced "Sa-vahj" and his last just like "oppress". This gets [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] when a bounty hunter is looking at Savage's bounty profile in "Revenge" and mispronounces his name.
* TheJuggernaut: Battles with him tend to consist of his opponents retreating almost constantly. He has been driven off a few times, but usually only when he's outnumbered. Obi-Wan chopping off his arm marks the first time that anyone has actually stopped him, and even then, it only forced Savage to abandon the fight. [[spoiler:Only Sidious was able to be his better for an entire duel and take him down]].
* KnightOfCerebus: Even more so than Cad Bane. Starting with his debut episode "Monster", the show became a lot DarkerAndEdgier, even though it was already rather serious.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: In "Witches of the Mist", after being riddled with blaster bolts, Savage manages to overpower the droids attacking him, and opts to quit while he's ahead, fleeing into the galaxy.
** In "Revival", he and Maul wisely decide to cut their losses after Savage loses an arm and Hondo's pirates turn on them.
* LightningBruiser: Savage lives up to his name, being incredibly strong, fast, and durable.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: In Savage's case, his brotherly love for Feral and Darth Maul is the driving force behind his evil acts (submitting to the Nightsisters to defend Feral and being party to mass murder out of loyalty to Maul).
* MadeOfIron: Obi-Wan had to kick his leg at least a half-dozen times to injure it, and Obi-Wan can kick people across a room if he needs to. He can even take numerous blaster shots and survive without any serious injuries
* MagicEnhancement: His transformation by the Nightsisters' magics had drastically increased his already formidable strength, endurance and reflexes, and presumably made it easier for him to connect to the Force.
* ManchurianAgent: He was used by the Nightsisters to act as a sleeper assassin, serving as Dooku's apprentice until Ventress arrived to kill the Count.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Seems to be a family tradition.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: He and Maul deliver a brutal one to Obi-Wan in "Revenge".
* NoSell: He doesn't even twitch at several blows from Adi Gallia, and Obi-Wan's physical attacks were only marginally more effective (Obi-Wan deliberately kicked the same point over and over for a cumulative effect).
** In "Monster", he took a ''blaster bolt'' to the chest, and [[TheJuggernaut didn't even slow down]].
* NobleDemon: Before his transformation, Savage was a noble warrior who cared about his brother, even giving himself up to Ventress to protect Feral. Even after his transformation, Savage displays a great deal of loyalty to Darth Maul, a brother he's never even met, even strangling a local creature for taking advantage of Maul's condition instead of helping him.
* OffWithHisHead: How he kills a whole group of Black Sun Vigos in "Eminence".
%%* PerpetualFrowner
* TheQuietOne: Savage is far less talkative than his brother (who ironically received next to no lines in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'').
* ScarsAreForever: One of his horns is cut off in "Witches of the Mist", and remains broken for the remainder of the series.
* SeparatedAtBirth: He and Maul were both infants when their mother gave Maul to Sidious. ''Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'' later reveals that [[spoiler: Maul wasn't given to Sidious willingly]].
* ShouldersOfDoom: His armor has ''huge'' shoulders.
* SiblingTeam: With Darth Maul.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Which he's put to [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice good use]].
* TheStoic: Apart from sheer rage, Savage expresses next to no emotion.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: After his transformation, his previously green eyes turned to Sith-yellow, signaling that the Dark Side has corrupted him.
* SuperStrength: Even before his transformation he was able to crush stones with his bare fists, but following the Nightsisters' ritual, this was turned UpToEleven. In his first battle, he threw a clone trooper several meters into the air with a ''single upwards strike of his axe''
* StudentAndMasterTeam: With Maul.
%%* TattooedCrook
* TookALevelInBadass: Both his transformation and his TrainingFromHell by Dooku had this effect on him.
* TragicVillain: Savage only wanted to protect his brother, but that was twisted by the Nightsisters to turn him into a monster.
* UnskilledButStrong: Savage has little formal training and, as Dooku says, "no technique", but he's so strong that he can destroy a dozen droids with a single Force wave and a blow from him sent Dooku flying across a room. He gradually becomes more skilled with training from Maul.
* UnstoppableRage: In "Witches of the Mist", once he had enough of being abused by both Ventress and Dooku, he enters into one of these, starting with simultaneously Force-choking both of them.
* UnwittingPawn: He's fairly gullible, which has allowed others to manipulate him to their whims.
* UseYourHead: A rather effective tactic when you've got six-inch spikes growing out of your head.
%%* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds
* WouldHitAGirl: Or choke one, for that matter.
** [[spoiler:And impale one... twice.]]

The brother of Savage Opress and Maul.

* AintTooProudToBeg: He had no qualms about begging Savage for his life. [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Savage]] doesn't listen.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Savage's Cain, but only after the Nightsisters get through with Savage.
* ForgottenFallenFriend: After Feral's death, Savage only mentions briefly that all of his kin are dead, then never says a single word about Feral again.
* HornedHumanoid: He is a Zarbak.
* TheLoad: He is clearly no match for Ventress, and Savage looking after him is a hindrance at least once.
* NeckSnap: How he dies.
