Shidan is the Head Pharmacist at the research facility in Lyrias and a former colleague of Garak. He was and still shows signs of being romantically interested in Garak but she does not appear to reciprocate or notice his feelings.

* BrilliantButLazy: He does his job well but he doesn't fill out the paperwork he's supposed to send to the capitol leaving Garak annoyed and saying that Lyrias isn't reliable.
* HopelessSuitor: Shidan decided he was this when he fell for Garak when they were in training together. He's accused by Suzu of just being to lazy to actually pursue a relationship.
* TheMedic: A trained herbalist.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He's been studying the plants which [[spoiler:are causing people in Lyrias to come down with a painful fatal illness that slowly weakens their muscles without being aware of the plant's deadly potential due to its extreme rarity, it's only mentioned once in one ancient book with faded writing]].

Shidan's young nephew who is close to Ryuu in age and decides to trust Ryuu with his ill friends after the adults fail to figure out why they are collapsing. His enthusiasm surprises Ryuu who is used to his potential patients requesting another pharmacist or doctor and he becomes Ryuu's first friend near his own age.

* AdultsAreUseless: He certainly thinks so when his friends start falling ill and into comas one by one and none of the researchers can figure out what's going wrong. It's the reason he seeks out Ryuu.
* {{Determinator}}: He leads Shirayuki and Obi to the place that fits the description of what has caused something similar to the illness hitting Lyrias while hiding that he has fallen ill himself. He ends up collapsing before getting them all the way to their destination but gets them close enough that they can find it on their own.
* FreeRangeChildren: The reason his friends are the first people in Lyrias to get sick is because they are playing in a cave system outside of town where the incredibly rare poisonous plant that is causing the illness grows.
* HintDropping: He tries so hard to get Suzu to ask Yuzuri out but Suzu has already decided his interest in her is a lost cause and Kirito refuses to just come out and say that Yuzuri is interested in Suzu.
* IGotBigger: He starts shooting up in height before Ryuu which Ryuu notices very quickly. Yuzuri is horribly depressed when she returns from a long research trip and finds that he is almost as tall as she is. She tries putting her earmuffs on him like she always has and slumps over while saying he's not cute anymore.

A mineralogist who does research out of a lab in Lyrias. He would prefer not to have to put up with anyone else and does his best to avoid people. Shirayuki and the others working on making the Olin Maris plant bloom without becoming poisonous discover some of his work and think it could be the key to planting the seeds in a way that allows the plant to glow without the potentialy deadly side effects and have to try to corner him to ask his assistance.

* BlueBlood: He's a noble, though he'd rather everyone forget that. It ends up being how Shirayuki traps him for a meeting when he leaves Lyrias, something her duties make it impossible for her to do to follow him, and she finally asks Zen for an idea of how she might meet him. Prince Zen personally invites him to a ball, something he can't decline, as a favor to Shirayuki and she corners him there.
* BoomerangBigot: He hates nobles and researchers. He's both of these things.
* ContrivedClumsiness: While he claims he's manages to avoid balls and parties for so long he's forgotten how to dance he hasn't, nor has he forgotten how to make a girl step on his foot while making it look like she misstepped during the dance so that he can excuse himself from the event and escape to treat his "injury".
* HatesEveryoneEqually: He doesn't care what other people do as long as they don't talk to him, get in his way, or ask questions about him but he does not like them.
* HatesSmallTalk: He ''despises'' small talk and is endlessly annoyed when Obi finds out he used to be a knight and starts quizzing him since Obi has been recently knighted but knows he doesn't really have the proper training and is playing catch up.

After he turns on his brother he's placed under house arrest but made the new head of the Bergatt family. Izana tasks him with rebuilding the corrupt house from the inside after Zen intercedes on their behalf and requests that Izana doesn't completely dissolve their noble house]].

* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:When he and Tariga decide to defy Touka Tsuruba decides the only way to go about it is for him to kill his brother to put an end to his machinations]].
* CloseCallHaircut: Tsuruba loses his ponytail when he's ambushed by assassins and one tries to decapitate him. It's only the first and least bloody of several [[IdenticalTwinIDTag Identical Twin ID Tags]] that he and Tariga pick up that night which prove that should they both manage to survive they're going to be a lot easier to tell apart.

* KlingonPromotion: He set out to kill [[spoiler: his brother, which would leave Tsuruba as his heir apparent as head of the Bergatt family]] when he finally decided things had gone too far and he needed to be stopped. It also helped that he realized [[spoiler: Touka was in the midst of an assassination attempt on Zen, the [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe only person able to consistently tell Tsuruba and Tariga apart]] and whom they saw as one of those who displayed the qualities a leader should have instead of ruling through fear like Touka]].
* MasterSwordsman: Both he and Tariga are noted swordsmen capable of taking on multiple assassins at a time. Tsuruba proves that even though he's never been in a fight without Tariga at his side he can still deal with multiple opponents on his own though he's annoyed they're slowing him down and ends up saved from a thrown knife by a newly arrived Obi.
* TrappedInVillainy: He and Tariga both swore to obey not to get killed by [[spoiler: their brother after Touka murdered their father]] and threatened them into obedience, leaving them as mere pawns on [[spoiler:Touka's]] board. [[spoiler:Their fear of him isn't enough to keep them from turning on him in the end]].
