Like many in his family, Lahoud entered the military academy and was commissioned as a naval officer. But a rift would soon develop in the military between Aoun, who supported closer ties to Lebanon’s traditional allies, and Lahoud, who favored the United Arab Republic and the Soviet Union. By the end of Aoun’s term in 1994, the balance had shifted in favor of Lahoud, who used his influence to modify the constitution to allow the Commander of the Armed Forces to run for president. Unlike his predecessor, who was a moderate compromise candidate, Lahoud used the presidency to increase his own power, appointing his own man as prime minister and extending his executive authority. By the end of his term in 2002, he modified the constitution again to be able to run for another term. His almost unanimous reelection was met with public protests, to which Lahoud responded by cracking down, using his security forces to arrest hundreds of dissidents. Now nearing the end of his second term, hopes are raised that the old general will finally step down to allow the fostering of a true Lebanese democracy.[[/labelnote]]
