* MakeMeWannaShout[=/=]MusicalAssassin: In her Shade form, she can unleash massive magic-powered song shouts from her humanoid body. Her song blasts are immensely powerful. Near the end of her boss fight, she tries to fire a massive one that will knock everyone senseless if she isn't stunned in time.

* DistressedDamsel: Brings about the events of the timeskip. She's absent for almost the entire second half of the game.

* AdaptationExpansion: In the original novel version of Ending E the administrator was just one individual, whereas in the ''Replicant'' remake it's comprised of a boy and a girl. The revised version of the novel would later add that the female administrator was born out of the male one's rib (calling to mind the Adam and Eve of both [[Literature/TheBible the bible]] and ''VideoGame/NierAutomata'') in response to his existential crisis over his lack of purpose.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler:As Kainé fights off her duplicates, the administrators point out to her how she killed the original Gestalt, a.k.a. the Shadowlord, and how this led to not only many Gestalts relapsing, but also the deaths of countless Replicants, even though players will know this was all technically Nier's fault]].

* UnfriendlyFire: [[spoiler:One of the short stories in ''Grimoire Nier'' implies that he killed a man who molested him in the midst of a Shade hunt. He's rather disturbed that killing humans and killing Shades felt the same.]]

* WalkingShirtlessScene: Aside from a few bits of armour.

* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: After five years he lets his hair down and most likely cuts his hair making it shorter, which makes him look older and more rugged. It also implies that he's no longer turning to [[HookerWithAHeartOfGold the oldest profession ]] as a way of making cash and that he's gotten over the trauma from that time.

* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Creator/YokoTaro mentioned in an interview that Nier used to prostitute himself to older men and women in order to afford medicine for Yonah. The short story "The Red and the Black" elaborates on this and reveals that the reason he ties up his hair is due to rape-related trauma.

* AmbiguousDisorder: The hero's obsession with saving Yonah is indicated to have been born a pathologic fear from being left all alone from having lost his parents at an early age. He recalls that when his father and mother died, he was able to reconcile with still having family remaining, but the thought of losing even Yonah is too much for him to bear. This is what most likely led to him having a "sister complex" for her.

* PintSizedPowerhouse: The smallest character in the party( barring Weiss, who's a book), yet powerful enough to match Wendy in a beam struggle [[spoiler:and then subsequently nuke the entire Aerie into dust, albeit unintentionally.]]

* StraightGay: According to [[WordofGod Yoko Taro]], Emil is confirmed to be gay and has a crush on Nier, displaying no stereotypical traits of either CampGay or ManlyGay. This is confirmed in Replicant when Emil fantasizes over getting married. Nier tells Emil some day he'll get married to a woman, which Emil responds with disinterest and indirectly mentions behind Nier's back he isn't interested in women.

* TransgenderFetishization: Played with. While she's intersex, the story means for the player to realize how unsettling the fanservice of her character is supposed to be. She still ends up being a sexy and attractive woman, but she does so of her own choice to assert her feminity.

Also, killing the Shadowlord accelerated the rate of Gestalts relapsing into Shades, which in turn accelerated the rate of the Black Scrawl spreading among Replicants. It would also lead to the rest of the Devola and Popola-series androids becoming scapegoats who would face severe discrimination and persecution throughout the millennia that lead to ''Nier Automata''.]]

* DecoyProtagonist: [[spoiler:Of Route E, initially the game starts off the same way Act 1 begins, but then when you defeat Hook the entirety of the events of the playthrough are revealed to be a dream Kainé is having and the rest of the route progresses with Kainé as the main protagonist.]]

* InLoveWithYourCarnage: He gets very... [[SexIsViolence "excited"]] when Kainé kills other Shades. A short story in ''Grimoire Nier'' hints that this has the [[RagingStiffie expected effect]] on her unique body.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Despite being a colossal asshole, Tyrann does give sound advice to Kainé from time to time. Most noticeable with the battle against [[spoiler:Louise]], as he realized [[spoiler:Louise was in love with the postman, and suggested Kainé to take him as a hostage to distract her. Kainé was left with little choice but to listen to him, as Louise's extreme regeneration made her nearly unkillable unless she left herself exposed.]]

* GenericDoomsdayVillain: Unlike other major Shades there's not much that can be said about the Knave in terms of motivation or personality as he is just a MindHive of crazed Shades that the Shadowlord used to kidnap Yonah.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice [[spoiler:When Gretel deflected a Dark Spear with its weapon, it broke in two. The upper half went through Kainé's chest, knocking her out for the rest of the fight. She survived thanks to the increased regeneration Tyrann provided her, but she transformed into a Shade until Nier, Weiss and Emil knocked her out.]]

* {{Bishounen}}: Heck, in the backstory he's outright said to have a "womanly face". Nier even had very long hair before tying it up, which made him look even ''more'' effeminate.
