A struggling amateur filmmaker trying to break into the mainstream television industry. She lives with her brother Dan and flatmate Jones in a dingy bedsit, and meets Nathan in episode 1. Claire subsequently joins Trash Industries, where her serious, faintly political ideas often clash with Nathan's drug-fueled hipster stupidity. Claire is bitchy, frustrated and pissed off at every single person around her, almost 100% of the time, as she battles to lift her career off the ground. She is also an unlikely and unwilling DudeMagnet; a fact that horrifies and disgusts Dan.

Nathan is the central protagonist; a hyperactive, immature idiot who spends his days filming videos, updating his website and advertising and canvassing on the streets of East London. He runs a popular personal website, Trashbat.co.ck, full of idents and selfies with unknown hipster Z-list celebrities. He never takes anything seriously unless it has the word "party" in it, and is the progenitor of some of the most ridiculous slang words ever heard. As the series goes on, he becomes steadily more popular within the scene, strikes up friendships with the Sugar Ape crew and rides on the back of Claire's filmmaking efforts. He appears to have an endless supply of cash on a credit card, which was originally hinted to be from his parents on the TV Go Home website.

A foundation and central hub for aspiring artists, Place was founded by legendary record producer Doug Rocket and advertises itself as "creativilization."

Doug Rocket is a world-famous musician, producer and visionary artist, and quite the narcissistic LargeHam and crackpot Cloudcuckoolander. Much older than the rest of the cast, Doug started off as a member of the Veryphonics in the 1980s, and went on to pioneer many more groundbreaking genres of music before founding artsphere Place, "a farm for idea". Claire applies for a £2000 film grant from Place, but only ends up receiving £500, in return for interviewing Doug every single day until Place's official opening.

A young artist who photographs people pissing. His entire credos is based on the act of urinating, and taking photos and creating artworks that depict the sensation of joy, relaxation and vulnerability when taking a piss. 15Peter has an open exhibition of his work at Place in episode 3, and Dan absolutely loathes him.

Later stylized as "sugaRAPE", and then just "RAPE", Sugar Ape is a local, popular magazine on the bleeding edge of fashion, arts and culture. Nathan treats the mag as his personal bible, as do the rest of the local Idiot community. The employees are basically all Cloudcuckoolanders and likely on some form of recreational drugs at all hours of the day.

Dan's sister, an unknown amateur filmmaker trying to make it into the television industry. She meets Nathan in episode 1 and subsequently joins Trash Industries, where her faintly political, dramatic ideas often clash with Nathan's drug-fueled hipster stupidity. Claire is bitchy, frustrated and pissed off at the best of times at every single person around her as she battles to lift her career off the ground.

Pingu is the only other Trash Industries employee that we see; a painfully shy hipster tech geek, who does all the behind the scenes work on the Trashbat.co.ck website. He rarely speaks, and is the star of Nathan's "JERK'D" DVD, a compilation of psychological torture methods that Nathan has exacted on Pingu over the years.

Later stylized as "sugaRAPE", Sugar Ape is a local, popular magazine on the bleeding edge of fashion, arts and culture. Nathan treats the mag as his personal bible. The employees are basically all Cloudcuckoolanders and likely on some form of recreational drugs at all times.

Dan is a journalist and reporter for Sugar Ape Magazine. He is a severely depressed, lethargic waste of space, possibly going through an early mid-life crisis, and is only able to write articles out of hatred towards the subject matter. He is idolized and worshipped by hipsters, Idiots and even rival newspaper editors, but he hates absolutely everybody and everything around him. As he battles to come to terms with this conflict, he constantly suffers the pestering omnipresence of Nathan Barley, who never goes away.

A graphic designer at Sugar Ape, one half of the personality that he shares with fellow designer Ned. The only difference between the two of them is Rufus's obnoxiously stupid, goat-like laugh.

The chief editor of Sugar Ape. A smart, dry, highly sarcastic mastermind and smooth as ice. Had the question mark added to his name by deedpoll. He has a unique position within the scene, as he shares Dan's views on the constant tidal wave of shallow, low-intelligence, hipster bullshit around him, but seeks to participate in and exploit it for profit. His respect for Dan as an employee and reporter goes down as the episodes progress.

Receptionist at Sugar Ape. She is remarkably sane and level-headed, and gets on well with Dan, often sympathizing with the despair and angst he feels at his job. She meets Nathan once and, like Jones, immediately thinks he's a bit of a twat.
