* ImprobableAimingSkills: At least in the movie. His accuracy with Miss Perrigrne's crossbow is quite impressive. He manages to land numerous very difficult shots while fighting Hollows, and his misses against Mr. Barron were very,very narrow, often an inch or two from a fatal wound. The very first shot against Mr. Barron was just inches away from Mr. Barron's eye, and in the cellar, the bolt flew right past Mr. Barron's ear.

* EarlyBirdCameo: The wight they're looking for was introduced very early in the story--long before the peculiars.

* WickedStefather: Their stepfather was apparently so awful that Bronwyn snapped his throat.

* TheStoic[=/=]TheQuietOne: One of the more withdrawn and reasonable members of the group. Before his Awesome Moment after the crew is captured by the wights, he's rather quiet and detached, largely due to bees flying out any time he opens his mouth.

* SuperStrength[=/=]SuperStrongChild: Her peculiarity. She's a teenager strong enough to row boats for hours and carry a bag that not even adults can lift.

** TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She and her friend Emma contrast in this way, although both are {{Action Girl}}s.

* BlessedWithSuck[=/=]PowerIncontinence: She can only somewhat control her levitation, and most of the time, she requires heavy shoes or a rope to keep from floating away.

** BadDreams: Most of his dreams of the future are of nightmarish variety.

* Myth/ClassicalMythology: He curses by Hades and is clearly inspired by Charon, even sharing with him all but one letter of the name.

* BadPowersBadPeople: Zigzagged. He's pretty much the TokenEvilTeammate of the group, being a jerkass, advocating murder and deliberately bringing people to tears for his own amusement. He also has to take life to give life.

* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite his behaviour, he's certainly one of the good guys, and his powers can be friendly, like when animating clay to make a toy.

* JerkWithAHeartofGold: He's pragmatic, abrasive, and kind of a dick. There's also no question that he cares deeply for the group. He's the only one of the kids who plays with Esme when she gets scared, [[MundaneUtility using the last of his clay soldiers as a toy]] to make her happier.

And loops' NoImmortalInertia ''does'' suck. By the end, the ''heros have defeated it too''--but via DeusExMachina, not EarnYourHappyEnding.

* WeAreEverywhere: In preparation for their war against the ymbrines, they've infiltrated all layers of society, even on both sides of World War One.

A hollowgast frozen in ice in Ymbryne Council Building, it (or ''him'') becomes Jacob's faithful pet/servant after the hw's been accidentally communing with it throughout the night. It is thanks to him that Jacob discovers his ability to control hollowgast.
