* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Kelly is an attractive blonde HeadTurningBeauty and Al is... not that. However, Al's backstory has him having been a football player good-looking enough to score with a cheerleader (which Peg used to be). The only reason Al is "ugly" is that he's gotten older and his diet hasn't helped any.

** Al tends to be disgusted out by Bud's rubber sex dolls and the fact that Bud masturbates instead of scoring with a real woman - which is quite hypocritical given Al often regrets marrying a materialistic gold-digger and goes out to nudie bars. He also vehemently objects to Bud dating his forty-year-old teacher, suggesting [[JailbaitTaboo that would be beneath his standards to him too.]]

* RealMenEatMeat: Al's preference for food is everything meat, which he rarely ever has. Vegetables are considered inferior by Al.

* DysfunctionalFamily: They're the TropeCodifier. It is safe to say their household income is divided as 99-1 with Peg getting the upper percentage while Bud and Kelly combined get the lower one. That leaves Al with nothing. The kids are divided on which parent is the LesserOfTwoEvils, sometimes going with mom because Al can be a bit of a ControlFreak at times especially if he demands family time, and the other times with Al himself since Peg is a lazy, negligent mother who won't feed them at all. The viewer usually only sees the kids warming up to Al, with Peg out of the picture.

* DysfunctionalFamily: They're The show was meant as a subversion of the TropeCodifier. clean-cut DomCom shows of the early '80s about loving, wholesome, upper middle-class families, instead featuring a lower-class family who seem to constantly be at each others' throats. This show and ''Series/{{Roseanne}}'' are arguably the [[TropeCodifier Trope Codifiers]] of the DysfunctionalFamily sitcom, as they started the trend of [[DomCom Dom Coms]] featuring dysfunctional families. The Bundys are a family of maladjusted people who generally don't get along; Al is a JadedWashout and a BumblingDad, Peg does nothing all day but sit on the couch and eat bonbons, their kids are unhappy (sometimes) and dislike each other (almost always), and the family is generally fairly poor. * NutritionalNightmare: The Bundys' diets vary between high-caloric fast food, scraps of whatever they can find (sandwiches made of Tang powder or toothpaste, restaurant condiments, toaster crumbs, etc.), anything they can steal from other people (e.g. neighbors or coworkers), things normally considered inedible (mice and other vermin, soup made from boots, etc.), or simply nothing at all.

* ReducedToRatburgers: The Bundys have eaten rats, vermin, and insects before due to a lack of actual food. One episode had Al and Kelly mentioning there was a mouse in their house and they were trying to catch it with a mousetrap so they could eat it but only got some cheese on their trap. Another episode had Kelly and Bud eating any spiders they could find around the house.
